• CentOS OpenVZ fail to boot after kernel update

  After upgrading to latest OpenVZ kernel CentOS server won't boot.   Hello - My production env runs CentOS 5.2 and 5.5 versions. I have to develop a new tool using C/C++ and deploy it on this production env. I was planning to use Fedora 14 on my desktop with GCC 4.4 to do the development with Eclipse IDE. And then later I want to deploy the executables to CentOS 5.2 or 5.5 The production env will have GCC 4.4 as well. Since both Fedora and CentOS are RHEL based, I thought this is possible. So can I do this? Or do I need to have CentOS 5.2/5.5 on my development desktop as well? Thanks Amit

• How can I start an X11 session on my headless Fedora 13 server?

  I have a small home server using Fedora 13 as operating system. Since the upgrade to Fedora 13 I cannot start the X11 server. (I need it to use vnc) When I try to start the server, both the nouveau and the original NVIDIA driver claim that there's no physical monitor attached (which is true) and that the X server cannot start because the initial display modes cannot be probed. I tried to manually add the display modes to xorg.conf but they seem to be ignored. Some forums suggest to simply use the VESA driver in this situation, but since I can't get it run either (different, more obscure message) I want to get it working with the nouveau driver as a matter of principle. Temporarily attaching a monitor would mean a lot of work for me ( 1 hour and currently it's almost 35°C/95°F in my home) I want to try that only if that definitely fixes the problem and stays that way if I remove the monitor again) How can I make the driver work without having a physical monitor attached? • What is the cleanest way to upgrade Fedora and also my individual installs while keeping /home?

  I am a professional programmer, using Fedora 10 (and a host of other packages individually installed). I use my system to telecommute. Every year or so, I go through the ritual dance, usually with a second computer and a KVM switch as I don't have office space for two monitors, to build the next version of Fedora and install all my favorite apps. Is there a better way? At least a nice way to keep track of what I need to 'add on' so that I don't have to manually install my app collection? Also, I keep /home on a separate raid-ed drive set so I can also fall prey to 'old-config-file-itis'.

  I want to dive into the open source world and start using a Linux distro while learning to program. I've looked over the options and it pretty much boils down to Fedora or CentOS. The reasoning behind it is I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone... Redhat seems to be "the choice" for servers, so I figure as I learn to program, I can also learn my way around Linux... or Redhat more specifically... and get that under my belt too. I want to use Fedora, and be on the frontier of new software (since I'm not doing anything critical), but if it's completely different than Redhat I'd rather just use CentOS. So is it? Or can I use one and know the other?

  I am new to Fedora, am still figure my way through it. I was going about tweaking it and preparing it to my needs, While installing through yum I dont have much other than the fact that I have to search for the packages. But when I open "Add/remove software" of Fedora. I am greeted with " No space left on the disk" and when I seek for more details it says " Disk Error :[errno 5] Input/output error" I did some research and I saw that it usually occurs during installation, but here I have successfully installed it. Can someone help me with it? Later on I even had notification of the same warning. And mind you I got loads of free space. Thanks for the help

  from what i understand, all computers need to be in the same subnet /24 so how would i get a computer to be able to connect to another computer that is set as 172 ? one computer is behind a firewall, the other is connected to a HUGHES sat dish and has the IP of 172 would I need to setup a ROUTE in a firewall between the 2 computers, to say "if you are trying to get to 172.18.156.65 then use the ip address 192.168.2.65 and translate it to 172.18.156.65" the firewall is a netgear, if I should use a ROUTE, then I'll try to learn it from the manual thanks

  I'm trying to connection from my Linux Mint 16 box to a CloudStack server. Building up the connection works (pings work across the tunnel). However 30 seconds later the IPsec tunnel gets terminated out of the blue. What could cause this consistent behaviour and how to fix it? The tunnel is setup using OpenSwan (U2.6.38/K(no kernel code presently loaded)) with the L2TP IPsec VPN manager from Werner Jaeger 1.0.9. The client is behind a NAT'ed router and the server is on public IP (CloudStack 4.2) Running ipsec verify complains about IPsec support in kernel. • How to migrate Fedora DS (389 DS) to a new machine?

  Hello, I am trying to migrate a Fedora DS (1.2.2) to a new server (1.2.7.5). The process has been painful to say the least. The old server (1.2.2) was also an upgrade from an old fedora DS setup, so it does not contain migrate-ds-admin.pl. I found this question, but the URL does not open. I am aware that I need to use migrate-ds-admin.pl, but I am clueless. How do I use it? I assume this works like this: 1. Copy migrate-ds-admin.pl from server which has 1.2.7 to 1.2.2 2. Run migrate-ds-admin.pl to export the schema+ldif from 1.2.2 3. Import the schema+ldif to 1.2.7 using migrate-ds-admin.pl. If the above is true, then what parameters are need for export and import? Note: ./ldif2db -n NetscapeRoot -i /root/NetscapeRoot.ldif ./ldif2db -n userRoot -i /root/userRoot.ldif The above two commands work like a charm, but since the schema (custom schema) is not migrated, I see alot of errors during import.

• How to understand the memory usage and load average in linux server

  Hi, I am using a linux server which has 128GB of memory and 24 cores. I use top to see how much it is used. Its output is pasted at the end of the post. Here are two questions: (1) I see that each of the running processes occupies a very small percentage of memory (%MEM no more than 0.2%, and most just 0.0%), but how the total memory is almost used as in the fourth line of output ("Mem: 130766620k total, 130161072k used, 605548k free, 919300k buffers")? The sum of used percentage of memory over all processes seems unlikely to achieve almost 100%, doesn't it? (2) how to understand the load average on the first line ("load average: 14.04, 14.02, 14.00")? Thanks and regards! Edit: Thanks! I also really like to hear some rough numbers based on used percentage of memory to determine if a server is heavily loaded, since I once became the one who cramed the server without understanding the current load. Is swap regarded as almost the same as memory? For example, when memory and swap are almost of same size, if the memory is almost running out but the swap is still largely free, may I just view it as if the used percentage of memory + swap is still not high and run other new processes? How would you consider together CPU or memory (or memory + swap) usage? Do you become worried if either of them reaches too high or both?   Hi I am new to Fedora/Centos/RHEL. I am confused about NetworkManager and network service in these Linux OS. May I know what is the relation between NetworkManager and network service? If I am using NetworkManager, do i need to turn off network service? Similarly, if I am using network service, do I need to turn off NetworkManager? Will they conflict with each other if I use both application at the same time?

  I have a Fedora 11 vm installed on my osx machine and can't change the screen resolution higher than 1024x768. How can I raise the resolution? I've tried adding additional Modes in xorg.conf and changed the depth from 24 to 16.

  I have Fedora 19 as Dom0. To create image I run # xen-create-image --hostname=debian-wheezy --memory=512Mb --dhcp --size=20Gb --swap=512Mb --dir=/xen --arch=amd64 --dist=wheezy After generation finished I start vm and see: # xl create /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg Parsing config from /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg libxl: error: libxl_dom.c:409:libxl__build_pv: xc_dom_ramdisk_file failed: No such file or directory libxl: error: libxl_create.c:919:domcreate_rebuild_done: cannot (re-)build domain: -3 In the /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg i have # # Kernel + memory size # kernel = '/boot/vmlinuz-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64' ramdisk = '/boot/initrd.img-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64' and ls -1 /boot/*201* shows /boot/config-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 /boot/initramfs-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64.img /boot/System.map-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 /boot/vmlinuz-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 Then if I fix ramdisk directive in .cfg file to /boot/initramfs-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64.img vm will start but os inside will not boot. Update: I've found that xl does not mount images. In debian-wheezy.cfg I have that: root = '/dev/xvda2 ro' disk = [ 'file:/xen/domains/debian-wheezy/disk.img,xvda2,w', 'file:/xen/domains/debian-wheeze/swap.img,xvda1,w', ] And there is no /dev/xvda* or /dev/sda* or /dev/hda* files in VM.
