    Hello everybody! Implemented a generic repository with several Methods. One of those is this: public IEnumerable<T> Find(Expression<Func<T, bool>> where) { return _objectSet.Where(where); } Given to be it is easy to call this like this: Expression<Func<Culture, bool>> whereClause = c => c.CultureId > 4 ; return cultureRepository.Find(whereClause).AsQueryable(); But now i see (realize) that this kind of quering is "limiting only to one criteria". What i would like to do is this: in the above example c is of type Culture. Culture has several properties like CultureId, Name, Displayname,... How would i express the following: CultureId 4 and Name.contains('de') and in another execution Name.contains('us') and Displayname.contains('ca') and .... Those queries should be created dynamically. I had a look in Expression trees (as i thought this to be a solution to my problem - btw i never used them before) but i cannot find anything which points to my requirement.     Hi guys! I'm stuck in a problem, i cannot workaround! I have a Oracle client 11, with registry key set to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1. I cannot edit this key, but my application must get data from Oracle in Italian culture format. So I want to edit culture info form my application only.   • SQL Server: What locale should be used to format numeric values into SQL Server format?

    It seems that SQL Server does not accept numbers formatted using any particular locale. It also doesn't support locales that have digits other than 0-9. For example, if the current locale is bengali, then the number 123456789 would come out as "?????????". And that's just the digits, nevermind what the digit grouping would be. But the same problem happens for numbers in the Invariant locale, which formats numbers as "123,456,789", which SQL Server won't accept. Is there a culture that matches what SQL Server accepts for numeric values? Or will i have to create some custom "sql server" culture, generating rules for that culture myself from lower level formatting routines? If i was in .NET (which i'm not), i could peruse the Standard Numeric Format strings. Of the format codes available in .NET: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF Only 6 accept all numeric types: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF And of those only 2 generate string representations, in the en-US locale anyway, that would be accepted by SQL Server: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF Of the remaining two, fixed is dependant on the locale's digits, rather than the number being used, leaving General g format: c (Currency): $123.46 d (Decimal): 1234 e (Exponentional): 1.052033E+003 f (Fixed Point): 1234.57 g (General): 123.456 n (Number): 1,234.57 p (Percent): 100.00 % r (Round Trip): 123456789.12345678 x (Hexadecimal): FF And i can't even say for certain that the g format won't add digit groupings (e.g. 1,234). Is there a locale that formats numbers in the way SQL Server expects? Is there a .NET format code? A java format code? A Delphi format code? A VB format code?   • Split user.config into different files for faster saving (at runtime)

    In my c# Windows Forms application (.net 3.5 / VS 2008) I have 3 settings files resulting in one user.config file. One setting file consists of larger data, but is rarely changed. The frequently changed data are very few. However, since the saving of the settings is always writing the whole (XML) file it is always "slow". SettingsSmall.Default.Save(); // slow, even if SettingsSmall consists of little data Could I configure the settings somehow to result in two files, resulting in: SettingsSmall.Default.Save(); // should be fast SettingsBig.Default.Save(); // could be slow, is seldom saved I have seen that I can use the SecionInformation class for further customizing, however what would be the easiest approach for me? Is this possible by just changing the app.config (config.sections)? --- added information about App.config The reason why I get one file might be the configSections in the App.config. I have not paid any attention to this, so it was somehow the default of VS 2008. The single user.config has these 3 sections, it is absolutely transparent. Only I do not know how to tell the App.config to create three independent files instead of one. I have "played around" with the app.config above, but e.g. when I remove the config sections my applications terminates with an exception.

  • Open Data, Government and Transparency

    A new track at TDC (The Developer's Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is titled Open Data. It deals with open data, government and transparency. Saturday will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers are invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government.  Alexandre Gomes, co-lead of the track, says "I want to inspire developers to become "Civic hackers:" developers who create apps to make society better." It is a chance for developers to do well and do good. There are many opportunities for developers, including monitoring government expenditures and getting citizens involved via social networks. The open data movement is growing worldwide. One initiative, the Open Government Partnership, is working to make government data easier to find and access. Making this data easily available means that with the right applications, it will be easier for people to make decisions and suggestions about government policies based on detailed information. Last April, the Open Government Partnership held its annual meeting in Brasilia, the capitol of Brazil. It was a great success showcasing the innovative work being done in open data by governments, civil societies and individuals around the world. For example, Bulgaria now publishes daily data on budget spending for all public institutions. Alexandre Gomes Explains Open Data At TDC, the Open Data track will include a presentation of examples of successful open data projects, an introduction to the semantic web, how to handle big data sets, techniques of data visualization, and how to design APIs.The other track lead is Christian Moryah Miranda, a systems analyst for the Brazilian Government's Ministry of Planning. "The Brazilian government wholeheartedly supports this effort. In order to make our data available to the public, it forces us to be more consistent with our data across ministries, and that's a good step forward for us," he said. He explained the government knows they cannot achieve everything they would like without help from the public. "It is not the government versus the people, rather citizens are partners with the government, and together we can achieve great things!" Miranda exclaimed. Saturday at TDC will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers will be invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government. Attendees are invited to pitch their ideas, work in small groups, and present their project at the end of the conference. "For example," Gomes said, "the Brazilian government just released the salaries of all government employees and I can't wait to see what developers can do with that." I am not a master of Lisp, but I find it incredibly difficult to understand the advantage one would get in writing Business Software in Lisp. Yet it is considered as a hacker's language. Why does Paul Graham advocate Lisp? Why did ITA Software choose Lisp over other high Level languages? What value does it have over these languages?

  • Social Targeting: Who Do You Think You’re Talking To?

    Are you the kind of person that tries to sell Clay Aiken CD’s outside Warped Tour concert venues? Then you don’t think a lot about targeting your messages to the right audience. For your communication to pack the biggest punch it can, you need to know where to throw it. And a recent study on social demographics might help you see social targeting in a whole new light. Pingdom’s annual survey of social network demographics shows us first of all that there is no gender difference between Facebook and Twitter. Both are 40% male, 60% female. If you’re looking for locales that lean heavily male, that would be Slashdot, Hacker News and Stack Overflow. The women are dominating Pinterest, Goodreads and Blogger. So what about age? 55% of tweeters are 35 and up, compared with 63% at Pinterest, 65% at Facebook and 70% at LinkedIn. As you can tell, LinkedIn supports the oldest user base, with the average member being 44. The average age at Facebook is 51, and it’s 37 at Twitter. If you want to aim younger, have you met Orkut yet? 83% of its users are under 35. The next sites in order as great candidates for the young market are deviantART, Hacker News, Hi5, Github, and Reddit. I know, other than Reddit, many of you might be saying “who?” But the list could offer an opportunity to look at the vast social world beyond Facebook, Twitter and Google+ (which Pingdom did not include in the survey at all due to a lack of accessible data). As for the average age of social users overall: 26% are 25-34 25% are 35-44 19% are 45-54 16% are 18-24  6% are 55-64  5% are 0-17  and 2% are 65 Now you know where you stand on the “cutting edge” scale for a person your age. You’re welcome. Certainly such demographics are a moving target and need to be watched and reassessed on a regular basis to make sure you’re moving in step with the people you want to talk to. For instance, since Pingdom’s survey last year, the age of the average Facebook user has gone up 2 years, while the age of the average Twitter user has gone down 2 years. With the targeting and analytics tools available on today’s social management platforms, there’s little need to market in the dark. Otherwise, good luck with those Clay CD’s.

  • PHP suddenly failed after IIS update

    All my application pools were stopped this morning after I got to work. I can restart them, but when I try to load the website the app pool crashes again. Update: I've looked in the GAC as the error below suggests and it seems that the file is not there. How do I get it back? Update 2: I found a further error in the event log saying The Module name FastCgiModule path C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\iisfcgi.dll returned an error from registration. The data is the error. So following the information from here http://forums.iis.net/t/1153937.aspx I removed CGI and my sites are working again. This has fixed the initial problem, but now I don't have FastCGI so I'm fairly sure that PHP will no longer be working (I don't have any PHP at the moment to test).
