  • How to see if turbo boost is working on I7 860 CPU?

    - by Jan Derk
I just build myself a new system with a Intel I7 860 CPU. When loading it using a single threaded application like Super PI, CPU-Z shows 2.933Ghz as speed. Now I understood that the I7 goes into turbo boost mode up to 3.46GHz for a single core. How can I check that? Is there a utility to monitor CPU speed per core?

  • BGP Multipath & return routes

    - by Dennis van der Stelt
I'm probably a complete n00b concerning serverfault related questions, but our IT department makes a bold statement I wish to verify. I've searched the internet, but can find nothing related to my question, so I come here. We have Threat Management Gateway 2010 and we used to just route the request to IIS and it contained the ip address so we could see where it was coming from. But now they turned on "Requests apear to come the TMG server" so ip addresses aren't forwarded anymore. Every request has the ip of the TMG server. Now the idea behind this is that because of multipath bgp routes, the incoming request goes over RouteA, but the acknowledgement messages could return over RouteB. The claim is that because the request doesn't come from the first known source, our proxy, but instead from IIS, some smart routers at the visitor of our websites don't recognize the acknowledgement message and filter it out. In other words, the response never arrives. Again, this is the claim. But I cannot find ANY resources on the internet that support this claim. I do read about bgp multipath, but more in the case that there are alternative routes when the fastest route fails for some reason. So is the claim completely bogus or is there (some) truth to it? Can someone explain or point me to resources? Thanks in advance!

  • Parallel Environment (PE) on Sun Grid Engine (6.2u5) won't run jobs: "only offers 0 slots"

    - by Peter Van Heusden
I have Sun Grid Engine set up (version 6.2u5) on a Ubuntu 10.10 server with 8 cores. In order to be able to reserve multiple slots, I have a parallel environment (PE) set up like this: pe_name serial slots 999 user_lists NONE xuser_lists NONE start_proc_args /bin/true stop_proc_args /bin/true allocation_rule $pe_slots control_slaves FALSE job_is_first_task TRUE urgency_slots min accounting_summary FALSE This is associated with the all.q on the server in question (let's call the server A). However, when I submit a job that uses 4 threads with e.g. qsub -q all.q@A -pe serial 4 mycmd.sh, it never gets scheduled, and I get the following reasoning from qstat: cannot run in PE "serial" because it only offers 0 slots Why is SGE saying "serial" only offers 0 slots, since there are 8 slots available on the server I specified (server A)? The queue in question is configured thus (server names changed): qname all.q hostlist @allhosts seq_no 0 load_thresholds np_load_avg=1.75 suspend_thresholds NONE nsuspend 1 suspend_interval 00:05:00 priority 0 min_cpu_interval 00:05:00 processors UNDEFINED qtype BATCH INTERACTIVE ckpt_list NONE pe_list make orte serial rerun FALSE slots 1,[D=32],[C=8], \ [B=30],[A=8] tmpdir /tmp shell /bin/sh prolog NONE epilog NONE shell_start_mode posix_compliant starter_method NONE suspend_method NONE resume_method NONE terminate_method NONE notify 00:00:60 owner_list NONE user_lists NONE xuser_lists NONE subordinate_list NONE complex_values NONE projects NONE xprojects NONE calendar NONE initial_state default s_rt INFINITY h_rt 08:00:00 s_cpu INFINITY h_cpu INFINITY s_fsize INFINITY h_fsize INFINITY s_data INFINITY h_data INFINITY s_stack INFINITY h_stack INFINITY s_core INFINITY h_core INFINITY s_rss INFINITY h_rss INFINITY s_vmem INFINITY h_vmem INFINITY,[A=30g], \ [B=5g]

  • Apache2: How to split out the SSL configuration?

    - by Klaas van Schelven
In Apache2, I'd like to separately define my SSL-related stuff once, and in a separate file from the rest of the configuration. This is mostly a matter of taste, but it also allows me to include the rest of the configuration in my automatic deployment process. I.e.: current situation: # in file: 0000-ourdomain.com.conf (number needs to be low) <VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443> # SSL part SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ....crt SSLCACertificateFile ...pem SSLCertificateChainFile ...intermediate.pem SSLCertificateKeyFile ....wildcard.ourdomain.com.key SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown ServerName www.ourdomain.com ServerAlias ourdomain.com # the actual configuration, as found for xx.xx.xx.xx:80, repeated </VirtualHost> I'd like # in file: 0000-ssl-stuff <VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443> # SSL part SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ....crt SSLCACertificateFile ...pem SSLCertificateChainFile ...intermediate.pem SSLCertificateKeyFile ....wildcard.ourdomain.com.key SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown ServerName www.ourdomain.com ServerAlias ourdomain.com </VirtualHost> # in file: ourdomain.com.conf <VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:443> # the actual configuration, as found for xx.xx.xx.xx:80, repeated </VirtualHost> Unfortunately, this does not seem to work. Apache SSL fails, though it does not give an error message at reload or syntax-check. My best found workaround is to us an Include directive from the 0000-ssl file. Many thanks!

  • Reinstalled Windows XP Home, shows as XP Pro, 'invalid' errors

    - by jan
We reinstalled Windows XP Home after hard drive crash. The system now shows as XP Pro and we're constantly getting 'invalid software' popups, images show in solid black. We called Microsoft, they said the serial number is valid etc. We're assuming that the pop ups are because that it is now XP Pro instead of Home. Or could it be something else? Or how can we determine what the issue is in order to correct it? Thanks for any advice on this. jb

  • Granting rights to the sa account using osql

    - by Jan Jongboom
I'm installing sql instances through script, and after creating a certain instance, I cannot get the sa account to be enabled through osql. What I've tried osql -S .\INSTANCENAME -E use master ALTER LOGIN sa ENABLE GO Using SSMS to enable the account (by logging in using Windows Auth., 'New query', and exactly the same query as in 1.) Suggestions in this issue No. 2. is actually working; and the account is enabled instantly. No 1 is not working, not even with the suggestions provided in 3., I have restarted the SQL services after executing the commands in osql. Additional info Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, No password policies apply to the account.

  • mod_vhost_alias on cPanel

    - by Bart van Heukelom
I have a webserver with cPanel / Webhost Manager (WHM). Now I need to install the Apache module mod_vhost_alias so I can use VirtualDocumentRoot. I've added LoadModule vhost_alias_module modules/mod_vhost_alias.so but the .so file does not actually exist. I could download it, but I'm not sure that's the correct way to do it. What is?

  • Ubuntu, apache2 wildcard dns to subdomain

    - by Mark van Velthoven
Currently I'm hosting my own (ubuntu) server with the following services: samba, ftp and a webserver. I've bought a domain and linked the DNS A-record to my ISP's IP. This is working correctly. Now I'd like to use the DNS wildcard-record to create subdomains. I want to avoid waiting 24hrs before the DNS change completes. Thusfar I'm only able to redirect all incoming wildcards to the same directory: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www Although I'd like to get: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test1 test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test2 My guess would be to change the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain. Any help or tips would be welcome! Thanks, Mark

  • Multi-level wildcard (catch-all) DNS setup *.*.domain.com => one IP/CNAME

    - by Jan Rovner
It is well known that it is possible to configure a DNS server to do a "catch-all" resolving on a single subdomain level, such as *.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x, so that anything.example.com maps to a single IP/CNAME. However, I need to set up an at least "level-2" wildcard sub-subdomain catch-all wildcard system so that any.thing.example.com or better, item.of.any.level.under.example.com will be resolved to a single IP. Has anyone got this working?

  • What are the pros and cons of AWS Elastic Beanstalk compared with other deployment strategies?

    - by James van Dyke
I'm pretty new to the whole Netflix OSS stack and deployments in general. As a background for my current level of knowledge ops-wise, my main role is as a front-end application engineer. However, I enjoy the operations side of things, so I'm attempting to setup a new deployment strategy and the tooling for a new project. Our Goals Super easy deploys (we want to push a button to update production) Automated deploys to test environments (using Jenkins) Ease of maintenance (we have an app to write, don't want to spend our time fiddling with production issues) Ability to handle a service oriented architecture (many small apps, various languages and data stores) Enough flexibility to ensure we won't have to change strategies any time soon (we're already trying to get away from RightScale) We're OK with a little more initial setup time if doing so will save us some headaches in the future. So, along these lines, I've been listening to podcasts, watching Ops talks, and reading tons of blog posts and based on our goals and what I've taken to be some forming best practices, we've started forming a plan using Asgard, rolling our package into a jar and rolling that into an AMI. We had this all planned out and like the advantages the process versus using a Chef server and converging instances on the fly (we felt this was error prone given our limited timeline and lack of understanding around a Chef server workflow). However, a coworker did a little looking around on his own and felt like Elastic Beanstalk met our needs. I've looked into it and spun up a test environment with a WAR file and an attached RDS database. Things seem to work and I believe that we can automate deploys to a testing environment using Jenkins via the AWS API. Seems simple enough... perhaps too simple. What I'm wondering is, what's the catch? If Elastic Beanstalk is so simple and effective, why isn't it talked about more? I'm having a hard time finding enough objective opinions and facts about the two different deployment strategies, so I thought I'd ask around. Do you use Elastic Beanstalk? If so, why and what factors lead to that decision? What do you like and dislike? If you don't use Elastic Beanstalk but considered it, what do you use and why didn't you use Elastic Beanstalk? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a Elastic Beanstalk based deployment strategy for an SOA? That is, will Elastic Beanstalk work well with many small applications that rely on each other to work?

  • Virtual Box Networking; How to configure bridged networking on Windows 7

    - by Krist van Besien
I have VirtualBox on Windows 7. I have two virtual machines running RHEL, that work fine when the network is set to NAT. However I want to change the network adapters for the VM's to bridged in stead of NAT. However when I go in to the VM configuration, and select bridged I also need to select an adapter, but there is nothing to select. Apparently I need to install a separate driver/filter on the network adapter. However I don't know where to start. I reinstalled VirtualBox (latest version) but did not see an option to install such driver. What should I do?

  • Snow Leopard Permissions in Shared Folders reset on saving file

    - by jan
I have several users who access their accounts on OSX through their windows machines over samba. As soon as they update/save a file, it sets the permissions to -rwxr----- which means no other users can read the files. This affects apache user, for example, so changes to their files under their Sites directory means Apache can no longer serve the pages. I've looked into /etc/smb.conf, /var/db/smb.conf, and /var/db/samba/smb.shares but I can't figure out how to force it to use the parent folders permissions. Thanks in advance.

  • Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

    - by Jan
Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

  • Laptop screen brightness stuck

    - by Bart van Heukelom
I can no longer adjust the brightness of my laptop screen, it's stuck at the lowest. In Linux, the brightness adjustment keys (Fn + F4/F5) still work, since a brightness popup shows and the meter bar changes, but it does this in a strange way. Starting at 100%, each successive press of the "lower brightness" button moves the bar to: 67% 50% 0% 26% 12% Or another random pattern like that. The problem is not Linux however, since I can't change the brightness from Windows (7) either. Where do I even begin to look? Since the problem does not seem be OS-specific, I've searched in the BIOS, but it has no option like that. How did this happen? I think it's been this way since when I lowered the brightness to 0%, then pressed the "lower brightness" key again. Not sure about that though.

  • Jerky animation on window open/close

    - by Jan Zich
Today, I received and installed Windows 7, and one of the first (slightly) annoying things I noticed is a visible jerk when opening of closing new windows. When I minimize or maximize already running window, the animation is smooth from beginning to end, but when I start a new program, it seems that just at the end of the animation Windows thinks for a fraction of a second. It is a bit distracting; especially since Windows 7 seems to be overall more responsive than Windows Vista. Does anybody has the same experience? Could it, for instance, a 64bit version specific issue (just in case)? I upgraded Vidia drivers, and even though my video card is not capable running latest games, it should be able to handle this (since it was OK in Vista, and since it does not look like a video issue).

  • What Boxee apps do you recommend?

    - by Tim S. Van Haren
I've recently repurposed an old machine that I had laying around (custom built several years ago with miscellaneous parts) as a simple media center with an Ubuntu 8.10 operating system and Boxee as its front end, and I absolutely love it. I'm particularly intrigued by the custom applications that are possible, and I wanted to start a running list of recommended apps for it. So, my question is this: what Boxee apps do you recommend, and why? One app per answer, please.

  • EloTouch touchscreen suspends correctly but does not come out of standby on Ubuntu 10.04

    - by Ton van den Heuvel
I am using an EloTouch touchscreen on a minimal Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I have a bare Xserver running without any desktop environment, just an xterm. The touchscreen is working great, but there is still one small problem. As soon as the touchscreen goes to standby, it is not coming out of standby when touching the screen. Using a keyboard or mouse does get it out of standby though. I am looking for any hints or directions to a cause of this problem. Is this an x.org configuration problem? A driver problem? Is this a known problem with touchscreens in general? Any pointers are welcome. The driver I am using is an unreleased EloTouch driver (3.5.0). I received it through a reseller who can not give me any technical information unfortunately.

  • Slow boot for OS and external devices

    - by Derek Van Cuyk
I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem. Hardware: Motherboard: Asus M4A78T-E Socket AM3/ AMD 790GX/ Hybrid CrossFireX Hard Drive: Kingston SSDNow V+180 64GB Micro SATA II 3GB/S 1.8 Inch Solid State Drive SVP180S2/64G Optical Drive: Samsung Blu-Ray Combo Internal 12XReadable and DVD-Writable Drive with Lightscribe SH-B123L/BSBP Thanks, Derek

  • Plugins stopped working in Chromium in Debian Testing

    - by Jan Hudec
Short time ago plugins stopped working in chromium. Neither of kpartsplugin, mozplugger nor flashplayer-nonfree seem to work. Neither comes up in chrome://plugins page (only "Chromoting Viewer" does). Was there recently any change that would require reconfiguration? And if, of what? I have Debian Testing (Jessie) amd64, recently updated, with chromium 35.0.1916.114-2, flashplugin-nonfree 1:3.4, kpartsplugin 20120605-1 and mozplugger 1.14.5-2.
