  I'm trying to get a scheduled task to run on Windows Server 2008. It has been working fine for months, and then hung, so I killed it, and now I can't get it to start. (In case it's not obvious, I'm not a Windows sysadmin by any stretch of the imagination. I inherited responsibility for this system, more or less.) The error it gives is: "The user account does not have permission to run this task". The task's "author" is "A". The task's "When running the task, use the following user account:" is "B". And my user is "C". All of A, B, C are members of the Administrators group, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why it thinks I don't have permissions to run this. Ideas?

• How can I get vim to set an ACL on its swap files?

  I use vim on an OS X Snow Leopard Server machine. A number of the directories I work in have ACLs (so that various groups of users can access them over AFP) that are inherited. For some reason, when I'm working in one of these directories, vim cannot read it's own swap files. It can create them fine but can't read them which, for some reason, makes it display the "swap file already exists" message (and no, the swap file does not already exist). vim -r lists the newly created swap file as "[cannot be read]". The owner and group are correct and the permissions are 0600, and the ACLs on the swap file and the file I'm editing are identical (as disclosed by ls -le and compared with diff). groups returns the same thing whether invoked from my login shell or via :! in vim. Has anyone encountered (and hopefully resolved) a problem like this before?

• How likely can my data be recovered after Windows CHKDSK performed on a degraded RAID 5 array?

  Hello there, We have a RAID 5 setup with 3 SATA disks, #2 went down as reported on the pre-POST screen. Unfortunately, for some reason out of my control, the system was rebooted with a degraded RAID :-O Windows XP (64-bit) loaded, CHKDSK ran automatically and done its recovery! From that point onwards, the following error prompts every time even in Safe Mode: lsass.exe - The endpoint format is invalid I took those 3 disks to the data recovery expert and need to wait at least 2-4 days for results. There are 2 VMs on multiple files stored in this RAID 5 array, and there's no backup! Sorry, I just inherited the system from an ex-staff who has left the company 2 months before I joined. How likely the data can be recovered?

• HP Rapid Deployment - Change Data Store Path

  I am running HP Rapid Deployment (Altiris eXpress Deployment Server 6.9 - Build 164) on an inherited Windows Server 2003 SP2. I need to change the Data Store Path as the default is pointing to the C: drive and there is not enough space there. I would like to set it to the D: drive where there is plenty of space. Reading the documentation: Data store path: Specifies the path to stored packages and files and other DS functions (such as license verification). The default path is C:\Program files\Altiris\express\Deployment Server. Note: Do not use this setting to change the path to the Deployment Share. Modifying this setting does not automatically allow you to use another shared directory other than the express share. To change the Deployment Share shared directory, run a Custom install to establish another location for the Deployment Share. Is there any other way I can change the path as I do not have the install media?

• CentOS Default ACLs on Existing File System Objects

  Is there a way to have existing file system objects inherit newly set default ACL settings of their parent directories? The reason I need to do this is that I have an user who connect via SFTP to my server. They are able to change directories in their FTP client and see the root folder and the rest of the server. They don't have permissions to change or edit anything but their own user directory but I would like to prevent them from even view the contents of other directories. Is there a better way to do this than ACLs? If ACLs are the way to go I'm assuming a default ACL on the root directory would be the best way to do restrict access. I could then selectively give the user permission to view certain directories. The problem is default ACLs are only inherited by new file system objects and not existing ones.

Plan is : to replace one disk with new 500 GB drive wait for resync replace other smaller disk with 2nd 500 GB drive wait for resysnc Now I should have 500 GB RAID 1 with original 70 GB partition Then I would like to extend the 70 GB partition to 200 GB and add D: drive partition with remaining 300 GB Can the above be done using Windows Disk Management and / or Windows DiskPart ?

• Installing httpssl module on a running NGINX server

  Hi, New to NGINX, we inherited a project that runs Django/FCGI/NGINX on a hosted RHEL box. A requirement has come in that the site now needs to have ssl enabled. Client was pretty sure the person who had built the site had made it so they could use ssl. I backed up the conf file, added the server block for the ssl instance and tried to reload. Reload failed because it didn't recognize the ssl in this line: ssl on; Not an NGINX expert, but the David Caruso in me tells me that the server (sunglasses on) is not secure. I know that you need to configure NGINX at install with this module. If this didn't happen, how hard/risky is it to reconfigure a running nginx box with this module given that we didn't configure it in the first place.

• Coldfusion server VERY slow page loads

  I inherited a windows server 2003 coldfusion 7 server a few weeks ago. Today a network cable was unplugged by accident from the server. On plugging it back in, pages were NOT loading at all. Rather, we were receiving a generic coldfusion error page. After restarting IIS several times and coldfusion even more than that, we finally got pages to start loading. However, the loading is extremely slow (30+ seconds) on pages that used to load instantly. Loading through the local network (IE localhost/cfide/administrator) does nothing to help the load speed. I am not familiar with IIS or Coldfusion (We're in the process of migrating this to Linux/PHP), so this is all new territory to me. I'm hoping someone may have experienced this issue in the past and can help me solve it. I'm happy to provide any additional information that might be necessary....I'm just not sure what information you might need in order to help. Thanks for your time.

• Exchange 2010 install locks out high level accounts

  Basically, when we installed Exchange 2010 alongside our Exchange 2003 server (we assume), this is what caused our problem. The Exchange 2010 server is not active, just running on the domain. What's actually going on is that user groups like Enterprise Admins are getting a single deny flag on Full Control over mailboxes currently residing on the Exchange 2003 server which is preventing any of us from making changes. It says these permissions are inherited from the Parent Object, but we have no idea which one that is. Any idea on how to go about fixing this?

  Permissions are fine (inherited) and checking effective permissions everything is AOK. As you can see i can make a file in the docs folder but not the pdf_docs subfolder. The folder has a lot of files and is quite large- i wonder if i've reached a limit? I couldn't find anything on google. Size: 51.0 GB (54,819,804,885 bytes) Size on disk: 52.0 GB (55,925,719,040) Contains 554,697 Files EDIT I've just checked and i can delete files... and for every file i delete i appear to be able to create a new one. This definitely points toward a limit in terms of number of files?

• File ownership and permissions on web site PHP files

  Hello, I am learning the basics of linux servers so I am green. I have an Ubuntu server upon which there are websites that I have inherited. In a fit of security worry I decided to check out the ownership of the web site files. They are all 2016:sites. If I run the command 'cat /etc/group | more' I can see that the group exists. But when I run 'lastlog' the user 2016 does not appear. I started to worry that 2016 might be the username of web users connecting from the web so I set the permissions on a testfile to chmod 600, giving read permissions to only the file owner. Sure enough I could still access the file from the web. Can anyone suggest what is going on here? I tried creating a new user and giving them file ownership but then when I access the file from the web it wants me to have all directories up stream owned by the same person. Thanks

  Our config is currently: 1 Windows 2000 domain controller running ISA2000, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2003 domain controller as main file server, prob cert server as well, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2008/Exchange2010 domain controller as Exchange server, DHCP,DNS Currently getting FRS errors on files server journalwrap error Currently getting FRS errors on othe DC's can't replicate from above Exchange DC holds Schema, rid,pdc, and infastructure roles File Server holds Domain namaing operation master role WOW, I didn't set this up, just inherited it. Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away? • Changing Text in Visio Org Chart Shape Changes Multiple Shapes' Text

  I have inherited an organizational chart that was created in Visio 2003. I am updating it with Visio 2007. When changing the text in one shape, such as a person's title, multiple shapes nearby change their text to the same. For example, if I change Bob's title from Programmer to Programmer/DBA then Wendy's text will change to "Bob - Programmer/DBA". Some changes update three or four other boxes. Some changes will only update one box. My thought is the originator copied or duplicated the one box to create multiple boxes and it created some type of link between them. How do I remove this link? • Active Directory Replication across Sites slow or not working

  I've just inherited (isn't it always the way!) a Windows Domain. The domain is spread across 2 sites. Site01 has 3 DCs & Site02 has 2 DCs. If I create a user in either site, the other DCs in that site, immediately replicate and show the new user. The new user is not shown in the other site though. If I manually run the following command, everything syncs and the new user appears: repadmin /syncall issdc01 /APed In the Inter-Site Transports DEFAULTIPSITELINK the replicate every time value is set to 180 minutes. I thought this was the solution, but on another Windows Domain, this is the same, but replication takes place across sites immediately. What can I check to resolve this issue? • Are VLANs necessary for my environment?

  Greetings. I'm the new network manager for a school. I've inherited an environment made up of several Windows servers, about 100 Windows clients, ten printers, one Cisco router, six Cisco switches, and 1 HP switch. Also, we're using VoIP. There are four floors in our building. The hosts on each floor are assigned to a separate VLAN. An office on the first floor has its own VLAN. All the switches are on their own VLAN. The IP phones are on their own VLAN. And the servers are on their own VLAN. For the number of hosts on the network, are all these VLANs really buying me anything? I'm new to the VLAN concept but it seems overly complicated for this environment. Or it's genius and I just don't get it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jeff

  I have inherited an old database which wasn't designed very well. It is a Sql Server 2008 database which is missing quite a lot of Foreign Key relationships. Below shows two of the tables, and I am trying to manually create a FK relationship between dbo.app_status.status_id and dbo.app_additional_info.application_id I am using SQL Server Management Studio when trying to create the relationship using the query below USE myDatabase; GO ALTER TABLE dbo.app_additional_info ADD CONSTRAINT FK_AddInfo_AppStatus FOREIGN KEY (application_id) REFERENCES dbo.app_status (status_id) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ; GO However, I receive this error when I run the query The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_AddInfo_AppStatus". The conflict occurred in database "myDatabase", table "dbo.app_status", column 'status_id'. I am wondering if the query is failing because each table already contains approximately 130,000 records? • Apache Upgrade Version

  I have a live server that I need to upgrade Apache from 2.2.10 to 2.2.15 on Windows Server 2003. I have just inherited this server and need the fastest way to upgrade to the latest stable version without much downtime and without messing up my configuration. My first thought is to copy the httpd.conf, uninstall the current Apache, install the latest stable Apache version and then replace the httpd.conf with the previous live version. Anyone see a problem or pitfall with that? How does a Server Pro do something like this. (I'm a programmer and am new to server systems administration).

• How can I create an AMI from an existing EC2 instance?

  (I suspect that this may already be answered somewhere, since it seems like it would be a common operation. But I can't find it, so...) I am a relative AWS newbie. I have inherited a running Amazon EC2 instance, with various items (Apache, MySQL, Sphinx, ...) installed on it and a bunch of configuration. I'd like to turn it into an AMI that I can spin up other instances from. I can't find any information on creating a custom AMI on Amazon's site - only the fact that you can, repeatedly referenced, as if to taunt me... I believe this is not an EBS-backed instance, just an "ordinary" one. I do not know what AMI it was originally created from. How would I create an AMI that I could use for spinning up other instances which will be identical except for the hostname?

• Two routers, one off-site, same ISP-assigned static IP. A recipe for conflict?

  This is the situation I've inherited: There are two routers, one off-site. Both are connected to the ISP. The ISP assigns both of them the same static IP (or so it seems). Presumably, the network problems we're having are related to the idea that you can't have two instances of the same IP. So we rang up the folk off-site and told them to turn off the router. Now everything's working okay here. How do I get around this? Get another static IP? Figure out how to get the router to ask for a dynamic IP (as we're not using the static IP for anything)?

  I have inherited a laptop running Windows XP 64bit professional from a former system admin of my Lab. The laptop is encrypted with TrueCrypt and luckily I have a password for TrueCrypt and can boot and login into the guest account. However this is where my problems starts. There are four account on the laptop three of which do have administrative privileges. However nobody of two formers members of the lab and one current member remember their passwords. I was given the assignment of recovering 2TB of data from that laptop. How does one go about reseting administrative password in Windows in particularly in the presence of TrueCrypt? If you are wondering I have never used Windows in my life so the only thing I usually with any Windows machine is just wipe out entire HDD and install OpenBSD.

• how to set global PATH on OS X?

  I'd like to append to the global PATH variable on OS X so that all user shells and GUI applications get the same PATH environment. I know I can append to the path in shell startup scripts, but those settings are not inherited by GUI applications. The only way I found so far is to redefine the PATH environment variable in /etc/launchd.conf: setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/my/path I coulnd't figure out a way to actually append to PATH in launchd.conf. I'm a bit worried about this method, but so far this is the only thing that works. Does anyone know of a better way?

  Is it possible to list all folders/files that a given group has explicit permissions on, for a machine running Windows Server 2003? If so, how? It would be nice to see inherited permissions as well, but I could do with just explicit permissions. A little background: I'm trying to update groups/permissions on a test server. One of the groups, Devs, wasn't implemented correctly when it was created, and my goal is to remove it from the system. It has been replaced by LeadDevelopers, which has permissions on many — but naturally not all — of the same folders. I want to make sure that I don't accidentally orphan any folders or cause any other issues when I remove Devs. It did have some admin-level permissions.

• User sees all Sharepoint document as being from 1938

  Hello, I currently have a problem I was unable to solve concerning Sharepoint. One of our user is seeing every file on Sharepoint as being from around 1938. The Created and Last Modified field are affected. When the user saves a file on his computer, the date is correct. If I log on his computer, the date are fine. If he log on my computer, the date are wrong once again, so it is linked to its Sharepoint account. The day and month are wrong to, but files uploaded 3 days apart are still 3 days apart for him. I don't see how anything could affect a date like that... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, PS: Destroying his account and give him a new one is not a solution for now. He has been in this company for a long time and he has a lot of rights inherited from Sharepoint 2003 that are complicated to create.
