• Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, more problematic keys?

  So my new motherboard doesn't have a ps/2 connector, so I bought a Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 to replace my old natural keyboard. But, some of the keys stopped working, so I bought another 4000... which then had different keys stop working. I tried cleaning them out, but no go. My guess is some condensation or something fell on it and shorted it out... but if it is that easy to short out, I can't imagine how my old keyboard lasted for years. Did I just get unlucky or are newer keyboards more vulnerable? Any recommendations?

• Keyboard not responding during boot

  My keyboard just stopped responding during boot. So I cannot go to BIOS or select system which I want to start. It is USB keyboard and it was working before. I borrowed PS2 keyboard and it also isn't working during boot. Lately I have been having problems with hard disk. Once every 2-5 minutes LED was on for 30 seconds and win7 wasn't responsive. I connected disk to another controller on motherboard and seems it is working now. All that suggests that to me that that motherboard is broken. What can I check? Or maybe you have some other suggestions?

• Keyboard shortcut / navigation references

  I use the mouse much too freely, and my wrists are not thanking me for it. I have been meaning to try and use the keyboard more as my sole means of navigating Windows, but I am having trouble sticking with it because when I need to do something and I cannot find the right shortcut, I grab the mouse and forget to let go of it again. Personally, the main software that I need keyboard reference sheets for would be: Firefox Thunderbird Visual Studio Windows itself But I would encourage more general inclusion of shortcut references in the answers in case anyone else tries to make the same transition I am attempting ;) What I am looking for is reference material that is as comprehensive as possible so that over time I can hopefully learn to do everything with the keyboard and spare my wrists. Bonus points for references that can be printed in a reasonable size so I can keep them next to my machine in hardcopy. I know there is an answer for Windows already: Is there a definitive reference for Windows shortcuts keys?, but I am leaving it in my question in case anyone has a better printable alternative.

• Moving windows using keyboard...faster?

  I like using keyboard shortcuts because it's faster as it does not force me to move my hands off the keyboard. In Windows I can use them to move windows around desktop: Press Alt+Space to open common windows menu Press M to choose "Move" command Navigate window position by cursor keys Confirm new position with Enter Additionally, to achieve better accuracy, I can hold Ctrl while navigating. Now the problem is that the normal "step" when moving is about 20px, and my desktop is quite large, so "walking" all the way across takes quite a long time. This kind of defeats the purpose of using keyboard for these tasks. Is it possible to change size of this step so that takes less steps to walk the same distance? (I imagine a hidden setting in Windows registry...?) I tried holding Alt while navigating, but it does not seem to have influence on speed.

• Windows 7 Keyboard Repeat Rate and Delay are Reset on Resume from Standby / Sleep

  I always keep my keyboard repeat rate at the maximum and the delay at the minimum for optimal keyboard responsiveness. Under Windows 7 however, I have found that the rate and delay are reset to the defaults (ie the one’s that are set with a fresh Windows installation) whenever the system resumes from sleep and requires opening the keyboard control panel applet (which already shows the desired settings) and manually setting them again by pressing Enter. I have seen a couple of posts in the Microsoft support forums, but no solutions. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

• Computer to act as keyboard

  Title explains it. Imagine this example, Host computer connects to a Client computer via male/male usb connection. Client computer acknowledges this connection as a new device, in this case a keyboard. The host computer can now send key events to the client computer and the client computer would process them as a normal keyboard event. I did a whole lot of searching in the internet and really have drove down many dead ends. Any tips would be appreciated. Note* this is a physical connection. The client computer should not have to install any software for this to function (The host will completely spoof as a keyboard).

• Looking for "pad" for my keyboard + mouse in a multi-monitor setup

  I've got 2 large monitors. My keyboard and mouse are in the middle of my desk which is appropriate for work on both monitors but when I want to focus on one of them only (say that I'm writing in MS Word on the right monitor), I'd like to move my keyboard and mouse to the right. I can do that manually but because of all the wires and other things, it is quite inconvenient when done frequently. I'm looking for something that I would put under both my keyboard and my mouse and that would slide to one side or the other easily. Is there anything like that available on the market?

• Keyboard that can't be removed (W8 CP)

  Somehow I ended up with four keyboards installed (English (United States), Japanese (Japan), Kannada, and Hindi. They are installed in the sense that the tray drop down displays these four, and when I ALT-SHIFT through my keyboards it cycles through them. The mysterious thing is that in the Languages Control Panel, only the first two are shown, so I am stuck as to how to remove the last two. In the past, I may have installed and removed the Kannada and Hindi keyboards. What I did recently was to install the English (India) keyboard, as a way to get the ability to input the rupee symbol with ALT-CTRL-4. That English (India) keyboard did show up in the Languages Control Panel and allow itself to be removed. It almost seems like installing that keyboard somehow activate hidden registry settings left over from back when I had Kannada and Hindi installed. In any case, any ideas about how to remove these keyboards which don't appear in the Language Control Panel?

• Pre Commit Hook for JSLint in Mercurial and Git

  I want to run JSLint before a commit into either a Mercurial or Git repo is done. I want this as an automatic step that is set up instead of relying on the developer (mainly me) remembering to run JSLint before-hand. I normally run JSLint while developing, but want to specify a contract on JS files that they pass JSLint before being committed to the repo. For Mercurial, this page spells out the precommit syntax, but the only variables that seem to be available are the parent1 and parent2 changeset IDs involved in the commit. What I really want are a list of file names that are involved with the commit, so that I can then choose the .js file and run jslint over them. Similar issue for GIT, the default info available as part of the precommit script seems limited. What might work is calling hg status/git status as part of the precommit script, parse that output to find JS files then do the work that way. I was hoping for something easier though, and I am not sure if calling status as part of a precommit hook reflect the correct information. For instance in Git if the changes files have not been added yet, but the git commit uses -a, would the files show up in the correct section of the git status output as being part of the commit set? • Port Win32 DLL hook to Linux

  I have a program (NWShader) which hooks into a second program's OpenGL calls (NWN) to do post-processing effects and whatnot. NWShader was originally built for Windows, generally modern versions (win32), and uses both DLL exports (to get Windows to load it and grab some OpenGL functions) and Detours (to hook into other functions). I'm using the trick where Win will look in the current directory for any DLLs before checking the sysdir, so it loads mine. I have on DLL that redirects with this method: #pragma comment(linker, "/export:oldFunc=nwshader.newFunc) To send them to a different named function in my own DLL. I then do any processing and call the original function from the system DLL. I need to port NWShader to Linux (NWN exists in both flavors). As far as I can tell, what I need to make is a shared library (.so file). If this is preloaded before the NWN executable (I found a shell script to handle this), my functions will be called. The only problem is I need to call the original function (I would use various DLL dynamic loading methods for this, I think) and need to be able to do Detour-like hooking of internal functions. At the moment I'm building on Ubuntu 9.10 x64 (with the 32-bit compiler flags). I haven't been able to find much on Google to help with this, but I don't know exactly what the *nix community refers to it as. I can code C++, but I'm more used to Windows. Being OpenGL, the only part the needs modified to be compatible with Linux is the hooking code and the calls. Is there a simple and easy way to do this, or will it involve recreating Detours and dynamically loading the original function addresses?

  I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem. • Problem with Keyboard hook proc

  The background: My form has a TWebBrowser. I want to close the form with ESC but the TWebBrowser eats the keystrokes - so I decided to go with a keyboard hook. The problem is that the Form can be open in multiple instances at the same time. No matter what I do, in some situations, if there are two instances open of my form, closing one of them closes the other as well. I've attached some sample code. • Keyboard for programmers

  I'm trying to improve my working environment and I'm still searching for that perfect keyboard that practically types bug-free code all by itself. At the moment I'm using a Logitech Wave for my Windows need and an Apple Wireless Keyboard (the one without a numeric keypad) when doing OS X stuff. I'm quite happy with the Logitech Wave but I would prefer one without all the extra multimedia buttons. What I like most about the Apple Wireless Keyboard is that it is very similar to the Macbook's keyboard which for me makes it easier to write code when on my Macbook. What kind of keyboard would you recommend for going all out writing code until your fingers bleed? I have remapped the Caps Lock key to Ctrl which after a while feels really good, until I have to sit at another computer or when someone at work is going to show me something on my computer. Are there other little keyboard tricks that you use to get a little bit more productive? I have looked into switching to Dvorak but I have decided it's not for me.

• Keyboard focus being stolen by Flash

  Performing a search, I noticed several questions dedicated to how to steal/trap the keyboard focus of the visitor. Considering this site is dedicated to programming that's not suprising. I was wondering if anyone can advise me on how to prevent this type of behavior. Losing keyboard focus to flash basically removes my browser's functionality until I use the mouse to click elsewhere (I use Mozilla Firefox). Anyone know of some kind of plugin or greasemonkey script that will prevent my keyboard focus from being stolen? Normal browser "shortcuts" are rendered useless by having to use the mouse to return keyboard focus to the browser. Edit: Reply to the post below, I do have flashblock / noscript and some other things. My issue is flash that I want to see/interact with stealing my focus. Basically looking for something I can toggle that will prevent flash from getting keyboard focus or a way to force my firefox keyboard commands to the browser

• java: useful example of a shutdown hook?

  I'm trying to make sure my Java application takes reasonable steps to be robust, and part of that involves shutting down gracefully. I am reading about shutdown hooks and I don't actually get how to make use of them in practice. Is there a practical example out there? Let's say I had a really simple application like this one below, which writes numbers to a file, 10 to a line, in batches of 100, and I want to make sure a given batch finishes if the program is interrupted. I get how to register a shutdown hook but I have no idea how to integrate that into my application. • What key on a keyboard can be detected in the browser but won't show up in a text input?

  I know this one is going to sound weird but hear me out. I have a heart rate monitor that is hooked up like a keyboard to the computer. Each time the heart rate monitor detects a pulse it sends a key stroke. This keystroke is then detected by a web based game running in the browser. Currently I'm sending the following keystroke: (`) In the browser base game I'm detecting the following key fine and if when the user is on any data input screens the (`) character is ignored using a bit of JavaScript. The problem comes when I leave the browser and go back to using the Operating system in other ways the (`) starts appearing everywhere. So my question is: Is there a key that can be sent via the keyboard that is detectable in the browser but wont have any notable output on the screen if I switch to other applications. I'm kind of looking for a null key. A key that is detectable in the browser but has no effect to the browser or any other system application if pressed.

  Hi, I'm using Linux for years and now I have to work with Windows XP at work. The problem is I don't like default shortcuts for switching keyboard input languages: [CTRL]+[SHIFT] and [ALT]+[SHIFT]. And I'd really like to change the shortcut to the one I'm using in Linux [SHIFT]+[SHIFT]. I've googled for a while, played with registry but have not found any solution. • Keyboard similar to laptop keyboards for a desktop

I like the new Apple keyboards, but I want something closer to the feel of a laptop keyboard (the keys on the Apple keyboards are still raised up a bit). Are there any that fit this description?
