• How to save a large nhibernate collection without causing OutOfMemoryException

    - by Michael Hedgpeth
    How do I save a large collection with NHibernate which has elements that surpass the amount of memory allowed for the process? I am trying to save a Video object with nhibernate which has a large number of Screenshots (see below for code). Each Screenshot contains a byte[], so after nhibernate tries to save 10,000 or so records at once, an OutOfMemoryException is thrown. Normally I would try to break up the save and flush the session after every 500 or so records, but in this case, I need to save the collection because it automatically saves the SortOrder and VideoId for me (without the Screenshot having to know that it was a part of a Video). What is the best approach given my situation? Is there a way to break up this save without forcing the Screenshot to have knowledge of its parent Video? For your reference, here is the code from the simple sample I created: public class Video { public long Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public Video() { Screenshots = new ArrayList(); } public IList Screenshots { get; set; } } public class Screenshot { public long Id { get; set; } public byte[] Data { get; set; } } And mappings: <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="SavingScreenshotsTrial" namespace="SavingScreenshotsTrial" default-access="property"> <class name="Screenshot" lazy="false">

<property name="Data" column="Data" type="BinaryBlob" length="2147483647" not-null="true" /> </class> </hibernate-mapping>  <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="SavingScreenshotsTrial" namespace="SavingScreenshotsTrial" > <class name="Video" lazy="false" table="Video" discriminator-value="0" abstract="true">

<property name="Name" /> <list name="Screenshots" cascade="all-delete-orphan" lazy="false"> <key column="VideoId" /> <index column="SortOrder" /> <one-to-many class="Screenshot" /> </list> </class> </hibernate-mapping> When I try to save a Video with 10000 screenshots, it throws an OutOfMemoryException. Here is the code I'm using: using (var session = CreateSession()) { Video video = new Video(); for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) { video.Screenshots.Add(new Screenshot() {Data = camera.TakeScreenshot(resolution)}); } session.SaveOrUpdate(video); }

  • NHibernate Proxy Creation

    - by Chris Meek
    I have a class structure like the following class Container { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public IList Bases { get; set; } } class Base { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual string Name { get; set; } } class EnemyBase : Base { public virtual int EstimatedSize { get; set; } } class FriendlyBase : Base { public virtual int ActualSize { get; set; } } Now when I ask the session for a particular Container it normally gives me the concrete EnemyBase and FriendlyBase objects in the Bases collection. I can then (if I so choose) cast them to their concrete types and do something specific with them. However, sometime I get a proxy of the "Base" class which is not castable to the concrete types. The same method is used both times with the only exception being that in the case that I get proxies I have added some related entities to the session (think the friendly base having a collection of people or something like that). Is there any way I can prevent it from doing the proxy creating and why would it choose to do this in some scenarios? UPDATE The mappings are generated with the automap feature of fluentnhibernate but look something like this when exported <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" default-access="property" auto-import="true" default-cascade="none" default-lazy="true"> <class xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" mutable="true" name="Base" table="`Base`">
<column name="Id" />

<property name="Name" type="String"> <column name="Name" /> </property> <joined-subclass name="EnemyBase"> <key> <column name="Id" /> </key> <property name="EstimatedSize" type="Int"> <column name="EstimatedSize" /> </property> </joined-subclass> <joined-subclass name="FriendlyBase"> <key> <column name="Id" /> </key> <property name="ActualSize" type="Int"> <column name="ActualSize" /> </property> </joined-subclass> </class> </hibernate-mapping> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" default-access="property" auto-import="true" default-cascade="none" default-lazy="true"> <class xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" mutable="true" name="Container" table="`Container`">
<column name="Id" />

<bag cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true" lazy="false" name="Bases" mutable="true"> <key> <column name="ContainerId" /> </key> <one-to-many class="Base" /> </bag> </class> </hibernate-mapping>

  • With NHibernate, how can I add a child object when updating a parent object?

    - by BMZ
    I have a simple Parent/Child relationship between a Person object and an Address object. The Person object exists in the DB. After doing a Get on the Person, I add a new Address object to the Address sub-object list of the parent, and do some other updates to the Person object. Finally, I do an Update on the Person object. With a SQL trace window, I can see the update to the Person object to the Person table and the Insert of the Address record to the Address table. The issue is that, after the update is performed, the AddressId (primary key on the Address object) is still set to 0, which is what it defaults to when you first initialize the Address object. I have verified that when I do an Add, this value is set correctly. Is this a known issue when trying to add sub-objects as part of an NHibernate UPDATE? Sample code and mapping files are below Thanks <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2"> <class name="BusinessEntities.Wellness.Person,BusinessEntities.Wellness" table="Person" lazy="true" dynamic-insert="true" dynamic-update="false">

<version type="binary" generated="always" name="RecordVersion" column="`RecordVersion`"/> <property type="int" not-null="true" name="Customerid" column="`CustomerID`" /> <property type="AnsiString" not-null="true" length="9" name="Ssn" column="`SSN`" /> <property type="AnsiString" not-null="true" length="30" name="FirstName" column="`FirstName`" /> <property type="AnsiString" not-null="true" length="35" name="LastName" column="`LastName`" /> <property type="AnsiString" length="1" name="MiddleInitial" column="`MiddleInitial`" /> <property type="DateTime" name="DateOfBirth" column="`DateOfBirth`" /> <bag name="PersonAddresses" inverse="true" lazy="true" cascade="all"> <key column="PersonID" /> <one-to-many class="BusinessEntities.Wellness.PersonAddress,BusinessEntities.Wellness" / </bag> </class> </hibernate-mapping> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2"> <class name="BusinessEntities.Wellness.PersonAddress,BusinessEntities.Wellness" table="PersonAddress" lazy="true" dynamic-insert="true" dynamic-update="false">

<version type="binary" generated="always" name="RecordVersion" column="`RecordVersion`" /> <property type="AnsiString" not-null="true" length="1" name="AddressTypeid" column="`AddressTypeID`" /> <property type="AnsiString" not-null="true" length="60" name="AddressLine1" column="`AddressLine1`" /> <property type="AnsiString" length="60" name="AddressLine2" column="`AddressLine2`" /> <property type="AnsiString" length="60" name="City" column="`City`" /> <property type="AnsiString" length="2" name="UsStateId" column="`USStateID`" /> <property type="AnsiString" length="5" name="UsPostalCodeId" column="`USPostalCodeID`" /> <many-to-one name="Person" cascade="none" column="PersonID" /> </class> </hibernate-mapping> Person newPerson = new Person(); newPerson.PersonName = "John Doe"; newPerson.SSN = "111111111"; newPerson.CreatedBy = "RJC"; newPerson.CreatedDate = DateTime.Today; personDao.AddPerson(newPerson); Person updatePerson = personDao.GetPerson(newPerson.PersonId); updatePerson.PersonAddresses = new List<PersonAddress>(); PersonAddress addr = new PersonAddress(); addr.AddressLine1 = "1 Main St"; addr.City = "Boston"; addr.State = "MA"; addr.Zip = "12345"; updatePerson.PersonAddresses.Add(addr); personDao.UpdatePerson(updatePerson); int addressID = updatePerson.PersonAddresses[0].AddressId;

  • JavaOne Tutorial Report - JavaFX 2 – A Java Developer’s Guide

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    Oracle Java Technology Evangelist Stephen Chin and Independent Consultant Peter Pilgrim presented a tutorial session intended to help developers get a handle on JavaFX 2. Stephen Chin, a Java Champion, is co-author of the Pro JavaFX Platform 2, while Java Champion Peter Pilgrim is an independent consultant who works out of London.NightHacking with Stephen ChinBefore discussing the tutorial, a note about Chin’s “NightHacking Tour,” wherein from 10/29/12 to 11/11/12, he will be traveling across Europe via motorcycle stopping at JUGs and interviewing Java developers and offering live video streaming of the journey. As he says, “Along the way, I will visit user groups, interviewing interesting folks, and hack on open source projects. The last stop will be the Devoxx conference in Belgium.”It’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it. His trip will take him from the UK through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and finally to Devoxx in Belgium. He has interviews lined up with Ben Evans, Trisha Gee, Stephen Coulebourne, Martijn Verburg, Simon Ritter, Bert Ertman, Tony Epple, Adam Bien, Michael Hutterman, Sven Reimers, Andres Almiray, Gerrit Grunewald, Bertrand Boetzmann, Luc Duponcheel, Stephen Janssen, Cheryl Miller, and Andrew Phillips. If you expect to be in Chin’s vicinity at the end of October and in early November, by all means get in touch with him at his site and add your perspective. The more the merrier! Taking the JavaFX PlungeNow to the business at hand. The “JavaFX 2 – A Java Developer’s Guide” tutorial introduced Java developers to the JavaFX 2 platform from the perspective of seasoned Java developers. It demonstrated the breadth of the JavaFX APIs through examples that are built out in the course of the session in an effort to present the basic requirements in using JavaFX to build rich internet applications. Chin began with a quote from Oracle’s Christopher Oliver, the creator of F3, the original version of JavaFX, on the importance of GUIs:“At the end of the day, on the one hand we have computer systems, and on the other, people. Connecting them together, and allowing people to interact with computer systems in a compelling way, requires graphical user interfaces.”Chin explained that JavaFX is about producing an immersive application experience that involves cross-platform animation, video and charting. It can integrate Java, JavaScript and HTML in the same application. The new graphics stack takes advantage of hardware acceleration for 2D and 3D applications. In addition, we can integrate Swing applications using JFXPanel.He reminded attendees that they were building JavaFX apps using pure Java APIs that included builders for declarative construction; in addition, alternative languages can be used for simpler UI creation. In addition, developers can call upon alternative languages such as GroovyFX, ScalaFX and Visage, if they want simpler UI creation. He presented the fundamentals of JavaFX 2.0: properties, lists and binding and then explored primitive, object and FX list collection properties. Properties in JavaFX are observable, lazy and type safe. He then provided an example of property declaration in code. Pilgrim and Chin explained the architectural structure of JavaFX 2 and its basic properties:JavaFX 2.0 properties – Primitive, Object, and FX List Collection properties. * Primitive Properties* Object Properties* FX List Collection Properties* Properties are:– Observable– Lazy– Type SafeChin and Pilgrim then took attendees through several participatory demos and got deep into the weeds of the code for the two-hour session. At the end, everyone knew a lot more about the inner workings of JavaFX 2.0.

  • Backing up my Windows Home Server to the Cloud…

    - by eddraper
    Ok, here’s my scenario: Windows Home Server with a little over 3TB of storage. This includes many years of our home network’s PC backups, music, videos, etcetera. I’d like to get a backup off-site, and the existing APIs and apps such as CloudBerry Labs WHS Backup service are making it easy. Now, all it’s down to is vendor and the cost of the actual storage. So, I thought I’d take a lazy Saturday morning and do some research on this and get the ball rolling. What I discovered stunned me… First off, the pricing for just about everything was loaded with complexity. I learned that it wasn’t just about storage… it was about network usage, requests, sites, replication, and on and on. I really don’t see this as rocket science. I have a disk image. I want to put it in the cloud. I’m not going to be be using it but once daily for incremental backups. Sounds like a common scenario. Yes, if “things get real” and my server goes down, I will need to bring down a lot of data and utilize a fair amount of vendor infrastructure. However, this may never happen. Offsite storage is an insurance policy. The complexity of the cost structures, perhaps by design, create an environment where it’s incredibly hard to model bottom line costs and compare vendor all-up pricing. As it is a “lazy Saturday morning,” I’m not in the mood for such antics and I decide to shirk the endeavor entirely. Thus, I decided to simply fire up calc.exe and do some a simple arithmetic model based on price per GB. I shuddered at the results. Certainly something was wrong… did I misplace a decimal point? Then I discovered CloudBerry’s own calculator. Nope, I hadn’t misplaced those decimals after all. Check it out (pricing based on 3174 GB): Amazon S3 $398.00 per month $4761 per year Azure $396.75 per month $4761 per year Google $380.88 per month $4570.56 per year Conclusion: Rampant crack smoking at vendors. Seriously. Out. Of. Their. Minds. Now, to Amazon’s credit, vision, and outright common sense, they had one offering which directly addresses my scenario: Amazon Glacier $31.74 per month $380.88 per year hmmm… It’s on the table. Let’s see what it would cost to just buy some drives, an enclosure and cart them over to a friend’s house. 2 x 2TB Drives from NewEgg.com $199.99 Enclosure $39.99 $239.98 Carting data to back and forth to friend’s within walking distance pain Leave drive unplugged at friend’s $0 for electricity Possible data loss No way I can come and go every day. I think I’ll think on this a bit more…

  • 65536% Autogrowth!

    - by Tara Kizer
    Twice a year, we move our production systems to our disaster recovery site. Last Saturday night was one of those days. There are about 50 SQL Server databases to be moved to the DR site, which is done via database mirroring. It takes only a few seconds to failover, but some databases have a bit more involved work such as setting up replication. Everything went relatively smooth, but we encountered a weird bug on our most mission critical system. After everything was successfully failed over to the DR site, it was noticed that mirroring was in a suspended state on one of the databases. We thought we had run into a SQL Server 2005 bug that we had been encountering and were working with Microsoft on a fix. Microsoft did fix it in both SQL Server 2005 service pack 3 cumulative update package 13 and service pack 4 cumulative update package 2, however SP3 CU13 and SP4 both recently failed on this system so we were not patched yet with the bug fix. As the suspended state was causing us issues with replication, we dropped mirroring. We then noticed we had 10MB of free disk space on the mount point where the principal’s data files are stored. I knew something went amiss as this system should have at least 150GB free on that mount point. I immediately checked the main database’s data file and was shocked to see an autgrowth size of 65536%. The data file autogrew right before mirroring went into the suspended state. 65536%! I didn’t have a lot of time to research if this autgrowth problem was a known SQL Server bug, so I deferred that research to today. A quick Google search yielded no results but emphasis on “quick”. I checked our performance system, which was recently restored with a copy of the affected production database, and found the autogrowth setting to be 512MB. So this autogrowth bug was encountered sometime in the last two weeks. On February 26th, we had attempted to install SQL 2005 SP4 on production, however it had failed (PSS case open with Microsoft). I suspected that the SP4 failure was somehow related to this autgrowth bug although that turned out not to be the case. I then tweeted (@TaraKizer) about this problem to see if the SQL Server community (#sqlhelp) had any insights. It seems several people have either heard of this bug or encountered it. Aaron Bertrand (blog|twitter) referred me to this Connect item. Our affected database originated on SQL Server 2000 and was upgraded to SQL Server 2005 in 2007. Back on SQL Server 2000, we were using the default file growth setting which was a percentage. Sometime after the 2005 upgrade is when we changed it to 512MB. Our situation seemed to fit the bug Aaron referred to me, so now the question was whether Microsoft had fixed it yet. I received a reply to my tweet from Amit Banerjee (twitter) that it had been fixed in SP3 CU1 (KB958004). My affected system is SP3 CU8, so I was initially confused why we had encountered the bug. Because I don’t read things fully, I had missed that there are additional steps you have to follow after applying the bug fix. Amit set me straight. Although you can read this information in the KB article, I will also copy it here in case you are as lazy as me and miss the most important section of it (although if you are as lazy as me, you won’t have read this far down my blog post): This hotfix will prevent only future occurrences of this problem. For example, if you restore a database from SQL Server 2000 to a SQL Server 2005 instance that contains this hotfix, this problem will not occur. However, if you already have a database that is affected by this problem, you must follow these steps to resolve this problem manually: Apply this hotfix. Set the file growth settings for the affected files to percentage settings, and then set the settings back to megabyte settings. Take the database offline, and then bring it back online. Verify that the values of the is_percent_growth column are correct in the sys.database_files system table and in the sys.master_files system table.

  • Dynamically Changing the Display Names of Menus and Popups

    - by Geertjan
    Very interesting thing and handy to know when needed is the fact that "menuText" and "popupText" (from org.openide.awt.ActionRegistration) can be changed dynamically, via "putValue" as shown below for "popupText". The Action class, in this case, needs to be eager, hence you won't receive the object of interest via the constructor, but you can easily use the global Lookup for that purpose instead, as also shown below. import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.text.DateFormat; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import javax.swing.AbstractAction; import org.netbeans.api.project.Project; import org.netbeans.api.project.ProjectInformation; import org.netbeans.api.project.ProjectUtils; import org.openide.awt.ActionID; import org.openide.awt.ActionReference; import org.openide.awt.ActionRegistration; import org.openide.util.Utilities; @ActionID( category = "Project", id = "org.ptt.DemoProjectAction") @ActionRegistration( lazy = false, displayName = "NOT-USED") @ActionReference(path = "Projects/Actions", position = 0) public final class DemoProjectAction extends AbstractAction{ private final ProjectInformation context; public DemoProjectAction() { putValue("popupText", "Select Me To See Current Time!"); context = ProjectUtils.getInformation( Utilities.actionsGlobalContext().lookup(Project.class)); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { refresh(); } protected void refresh() { DateFormat formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss"); String formatted = formatter.format(System.currentTimeMillis()); putValue("popupText", "Time: " + formatted + " (" + context.getDisplayName() +")"); } } Now, let's do something semi useful and display, in the popup, which is available when you right-click a project, the time since the last change was made anywhere in the project, i.e., we can listen recursively to any changes done within a project and then update the popup with the newly acquired information, dynamically: import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.text.DateFormat; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import javax.swing.AbstractAction; import org.netbeans.api.project.Project; import org.netbeans.api.project.ProjectUtils; import org.openide.awt.ActionID; import org.openide.awt.ActionReference; import org.openide.awt.ActionRegistration; import org.openide.filesystems.FileAttributeEvent; import org.openide.filesystems.FileChangeListener; import org.openide.filesystems.FileEvent; import org.openide.filesystems.FileRenameEvent; import org.openide.util.Utilities; @ActionID( category = "Project", id = "org.ptt.TrackProjectTimerAction") @ActionRegistration( lazy = false, displayName = "NOT-USED") @ActionReference( path = "Projects/Actions", position = 0) public final class TrackProjectTimerAction extends AbstractAction implements FileChangeListener { private final Project context; private Long startTime; private Long changedTime; private DateFormat formatter; public TrackProjectTimerAction() { putValue("popupText", "Enable project time tracker"); this.formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss"); context = Utilities.actionsGlobalContext().lookup(Project.class); context.getProjectDirectory().addRecursiveListener(this); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { startTimer(); } protected void startTimer() { startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); String formattedStartTime = formatter.format(startTime); putValue("popupText", "Timer started: " + formattedStartTime + " (" + ProjectUtils.getInformation(context).getDisplayName() + ")"); } @Override public void fileChanged(FileEvent fe) { changedTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("mm:ss"); String formattedLapse = formatter.format(changedTime - startTime); putValue("popupText", "Time since last change: " + formattedLapse + " (" + ProjectUtils.getInformation(context).getDisplayName() + ")"); startTime = changedTime; } @Override public void fileFolderCreated(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileDataCreated(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileDeleted(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileRenamed(FileRenameEvent fre) {} @Override public void fileAttributeChanged(FileAttributeEvent fae) {} }

  • nhibernate will not cascade delete childs

    - by marn
    The scenario is as follows, I have 3 objects (i simplified the names) named Parent, parent's child & child's child parent's child is a set in parent, and child's child is a set in child. mapping is as follows (relevant parts) parent <set name="parentset" table="pc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column=FK_ID_PC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="parentchild,parentchild-ns"/> </set> parent's child <set name="childset" table="cc-table" lazy="false" fetch="subselect" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true"> <key column="FK_ID_CC" on-delete="cascade"/> <one-to-many class="childschild,childschild-ns"/> </set> What i want to achieve is that when i delete the parent, there would be a cascade delete all the way trough to child's child. But what currently happens is this. (this is purely for mapping test purposes) getting a parent entity (works fine) IQuery query = session.CreateQuery("from Parent where ID =" + ID); IParent doc = query.UniqueResult<Parent>(); now the delete part session.Delete(doc); transaction.Commit(); After having solved the 'cannot insert null value' error with cascading and inverse i hopes this would now delete everything with this code, but only the parent is being deleted. Did i miss something in my mapping which is likely to be missed? Any hint in the right direction is more than welcome!

  • PDFObject load event

    - by Priyank
    Hi. We are trying to load a pdf file in web browser using pdfobject javascript api. Currently the size of the pdf's that we are trying to display is close to 10MBs. This creates a long delay in displaying a PDF on web page; while the complete PDF gets downloaded. We need to remove this lag by achieving either of the alternatives: Show a progress bar until the PDF is actually displayed. We couldn't find an event which is triggered and can be used to find out if pdf is visible now. This lacking doesn't let us decide when to stop showing progress bar/spinner OR lazy load the PDF such that it gets displayed as soon as first page gets loaded. With that ateast user will have a visual indication as to something is happening. We couldn'find anything in pdf object that lets us do a lazy load. User alternative pdf rendering api; this is a low priority as we already have complete code in place; but in an event of first 2 alternatives not being met; we'd have to consider this option. So please feel free to suggest. Any other ideas as to how user interaction can be made more intuitive or pleasant; would be welcome. Cheers

  • Flex textarea control not updating properly.

    - by ielashi
    I am writing a flex application that involves modifying a textarea very frequently. I have encountered issues with the textarea sometimes not displaying my modifications. The following actionscript code illustrates my problem: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" minWidth="955" minHeight="600"> <mx:TextArea x="82" y="36" width="354" height="291" id="textArea" creationComplete="initApp()"/> <mx:Script> private var testSentence:String = "The big brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."; private var testCounter:int = 0; private function initApp():void { var timer:Timer = new Timer(10); timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, playSentence); timer.start(); } private function playSentence(event:TimerEvent):void { textArea.editable = false; if (testCounter == testSentence.length) { testCounter = 0; textArea.text += "\n"; } else { textArea.text += testSentence.charAt(testCounter++); } textArea.editable = true; } </mx:Script> </mx:Application> When you run the above code in a flex project, it should repeatedly print, character by character, the sentence "The big brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.". But, if you are typing into the textarea at the same time, you will notice the text the timer prints is distorted. I am really curious as to why this happens. The single-threaded nature of flex and disabling user input for the textarea when I make modifications should prevent this from happening, but for some reason this doesn't seem to be working. I must note too that, when running the timer at larger intervals (around 100ms) it seems to work perfectly, so I am tempted to think it's some kind of synchronization issue in the internals of the flex framework. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem?

    Hi Guys, This is probably incredibly simple, but I just cant see the wood for the trees at the moment. For brevity, I would like to model a word object, that has related words to it (synonyms), In doing so I could have the following mappings: <class name="Word" table="bs_word">

<property name="Key" column="word" type="String" length="50" /> <many-to-one name="SynonymGroup" class="BS.Core.Domain.Synonym, BS.Core" column="SynonymId" lazy="false"/> <class name="Synonym" table="bs_Synonym">

<property name="Alias" column="Alias" type="String" length="50" /> <bag name="Words" cascade="none" lazy="false" inverse="true"> <key column="SynonymId" /> <one-to-many class="Word" /> </bag> Mapping it like this would mean for a given word, I can access related words (synonyms) like this: word.SynonymGroup.Words However I would like to know if it is possible to map a bag of objects on an instance of a word object...if that makes sense, so I can access the related words like this: word.Words I've tried playing around with the map element, and composite elements, all to no avail - so I was wondering if some kind person could point me in the right direction? ta, kmoo01

  • How implement the Open Session in View pattern in NHibernate?

    - by MCardinale
    I'm using ASP.NET MVC + NHibernate + Fluent NHibernate and having a problem with lazy loading. Through this question (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2519964/how-to-fix-a-nhibernate-lazy-loading-error-no-session-or-session-was-closed), I've discovered that I have to implement the Open Session in View pattern , but I don't know how. In my repositories classes, I use methods like this public ImageGallery GetById(int id) { using(ISession session = NHibernateSessionFactory.OpenSession()) { return session.Get<ImageGallery>(id); } } public void Add(ImageGallery imageGallery) { using(ISession session = NHibernateSessionFactory.OpenSession()) { using(ITransaction transaction = session.BeginTransaction()) { session.Save(imageGallery); transaction.Commit(); } } } And this is my Session Factory helper class: public class NHibernateSessionFactory { private static ISessionFactory _sessionFactory; private static ISessionFactory SessionFactory { get { if(_sessionFactory == null) { _sessionFactory = Fluently.Configure() .Database(MySQLConfiguration.Standard.ConnectionString(MyConnString)) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<ImageGalleryMap>()) .ExposeConfiguration(c => c.Properties.Add("hbm2ddl.keywords", "none")) .BuildSessionFactory(); } return _sessionFactory; } } public static ISession OpenSession() { return SessionFactory.OpenSession(); } } Someone could help me to implements Open Session in View pattern? Thank you.

  • Rails 2.3 session

    - by Sam Kong
    Hi, I am developing a rails 2.3.2 app. I need to keep session_id for an order record, retrieve it and finally delete the session_id when the order is completed. It worked when I used cookies as session store but it doesn't for active_record store. (I restarted my browser, so no cache issue.) I know rails 2.3 implements lazy session load. I read some info about it but am still confused. Can somebody clarify how I use session_id for such a case? What I am doing is... A user make an order going through several pages. There is no sign-up, neither login. So I keep session_id in the order record so that no other user can access the order. @order = Order.last :conditions = {:id = params[:id], :session_id = session[:session_id] } When the order is finished, I set nil to session_id column. How would you implement such a case in lazy session(and active_record store) environment? Thanks. Sam

  • How to make a good programming interview?

    - by luckyluke
    I am doing interviews with from time to time to recruit some not bad people. And I really think I AM NOT doing to correct Job. I work in a company when We have to do a lot o DB programming, .NET programming, Java programming, so we need people who are open minded and not focused on a particular tech. Afterall language is a notation, You have to understand what is going under the hood. I ask people about their project, ask them some coding questions (believe me a SQL question involving a CROSS JOIN is hard), let them write some code, ask them about oo design, ask them how they update their knowledge, and stay up to date, do they have FUN when they code (at least sometimes). Hell I even give them a coding solution for home (3 hours max) to see how they think and code. And yet my hit rate at hiring junior member (those who live over the initial 3 months) is just about 33%. So my question, how do YOU make the good interviews, because I think my hit rate is to low? Do you have any best-practices(should be at least 60-70%)? p.s. And i noticed that: the best programmers are lazy, but motivated, just being lazy is not enough:) But people who write the best code are attentive to details:)

  • getting proxies of the correct type in nhibernate

    - by Nir
    I have a problem with uninitialized proxies in nhibernate The Domain Model Let's say I have two parallel class hierarchies: Animal, Dog, Cat and AnimalOwner, DogOwner, CatOwner where Dog and Cat both inherit from Animal and DogOwner and CatOwner both inherit from AnimalOwner. AnimalOwner has a reference of type Animal called OwnedAnimal. Here are the classes in the example: public abstract class Animal { // some properties } public class Dog : Animal { // some more properties } public class Cat : Animal { // some more properties } public class AnimalOwner { public virtual Animal OwnedAnimal {get;set;} // more properties... } public class DogOwner : AnimalOwner { // even more properties } public class CatOwner : AnimalOwner { // even more properties } The classes have proper nhibernate mapping, all properties are persistent and everything that can be lazy loaded is lazy loaded. The application business logic only let you to set a Dog in a DogOwner and a Cat in a CatOwner. The Problem I have code like this: public void ProcessDogOwner(DogOwner owner) { Dog dog = (Dog)owner.OwnedAnimal; .... } This method can be called by many diffrent methods, in most cases the dog is already in memory and everything is ok, but rarely the dog isn't already in memory - in this case I get an nhibernate "uninitialized proxy" but the cast throws an exception because nhibernate genrates a proxy for Animal and not for Dog. I understand that this is how nhibernate works, but I need to know the type without loading the object - or, more correctly I need the uninitialized proxy to be a proxy of Cat or Dog and not a proxy of Animal. Constraints I can't change the domain model, the model is handed to me by another department, I tried to get them to change the model and failed. The actual model is much more complicated then the example and the classes have many references between them, using eager loading or adding joins to the queries is out of the question for performance reasons. I have full control of the source code, the hbm mapping and the database schema and I can change them any way I want (as long as I don't change the relationships between the model classes). I have many methods like the one in the example and I don't want to modify all of them. Thanks, Nir

  • How can I merge multiple Compass Resources into one, with one score?

    - by Brent Fisher
    I am trying to integrate compass into my platform using the JDBC ResultSetToResourceMapping. What I want to do is set it up so that I could have multiple result set mappings, tied to one Resource, that produces one result, with one score, and a merged score. I have tried to trick Compass into doing this by mapping the same id across them, even though the property fields are different, but it just ends up giving me separate hits for each. E.g. I have the following Data Model, Cases and Comments. One case might have several comments. Say I search for a term that appears in multiple comments. Right now, I a hit for each one, each with a different score. Is there a way that I could merge or aggregate those hits into one hit? Say, instead of Score Entity ID Snippets 100.0% Case 3558 ... The fox jumped over the lazy dog ... 60.0% Case 3558 ... In Alabama today, three jumping turtles were ... 25.0% Case 3558 ... Three jumpers fled the scene... I get Score Entity ID Snippets 100.0% Case 3558 The fox jumped over the lazy dog ...In Alabama today, three jumping turtles were ... Three jumpers fled the scene... Where the latter score is an aggregated score.

  • Saving complex aggregates using Repository Pattern

    - by Kevin Lawrence
    We have a complex aggregate (sensitive names obfuscated for confidentiality reasons). The root, R, is composed of collections of Ms, As, Cs, Ss. Ms have collections of other low-level details. etc etc R really is an aggregate (no fair suggesting we split it!) We use lazy loading to retrieve the details. No problem there. But we are struggling a little with how to save such a complex aggregate. From the caller's point of view: r = repository.find(id); r.Ps.add(factory.createP()); r.Cs[5].updateX(123); r.Ms.removeAt(5); repository.save(r); Our competing solutions are: Dirty flags Each entity in the aggregate in the aggregate has a dirty flag. The save() method in the repository walks the tree looking for dirty objects and saves them. Deletes and adds are a little trickier - especially with lazy-loading - but doable. Event listener accumulates changes. Repository subscribes a listener to changes and accumulates events. When save is called, the repository grabs all the change events and writes them to the DB. Give up on repository pattern. Implement overloaded save methods to save the parts of the aggregate separately. The original example would become: r = repository.find(id); r.Ps.add(factory.createP()); r.Cs[5].updateX(123); r.Ms.removeAt(5); repository.save(r.Ps); repository.save(r.Cs); repository.save(r.Ms); (or worse) Advice please! What should we do?

  • Table cell doesn't obey vertical-align CSS declaration when it contains a floated element

    - by mikez302
    I am trying to create a table, where each cell contains a big floated h1 on the left side, and a larger amount of small text to the right of the big text, vertically centered. However, the small text is showing up at the top of each cell, despite that it has a "vertical-align: middle" declaration. When I remove the big floated element, everything looks fine. I tested it in recent versions of IE, Firefox, and Safari, and this happened in every case. Why is this happening? Does anyone know of a way around it? Here is an example:

vertical-align test

1
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Notice that the small text in the first cell is at the top for some reason, but the text in the 2nd cell is vertically centered.

  • Error: "Cannot simultaneously fetch multiple bags" when calling Configuration.BuildSessionFactory();

    - by Nick Meldrum
    We are getting this error after upgrading to NHibernate 2.1. [QueryException: Cannot simultaneously fetch multiple bags.] NHibernate.Loader.BasicLoader.PostInstantiate() +418 NHibernate.Loader.Entity.EntityLoader..ctor(IOuterJoinLoadable persister, String[] uniqueKey, IType uniqueKeyType, Int32 batchSize, LockMode lockMode, ISessionFactoryImplementor factory, IDictionary`2 enabledFilters) +123 NHibernate.Loader.Entity.BatchingEntityLoader.CreateBatchingEntityLoader(IOuterJoinLoadable persister, Int32 maxBatchSize, LockMode lockMode, ISessionFactoryImplementor factory, IDictionary`2 enabledFilters) +263 NHibernate.Persister.Entity.AbstractEntityPersister.CreateEntityLoader(LockMode lockMode, IDictionary`2 enabledFilters) +26 NHibernate.Persister.Entity.AbstractEntityPersister.CreateLoaders() +57 NHibernate.Persister.Entity.AbstractEntityPersister.PostInstantiate() +1244 NHibernate.Persister.Entity.SingleTableEntityPersister.PostInstantiate() +18 NHibernate.Impl.SessionFactoryImpl..ctor(Configuration cfg, IMapping mapping, Settings settings, EventListeners listeners) +3261 NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration.BuildSessionFactory() +87 Without stepping into the NHibernate source, it doesn't look like I can see which mapping is creating the issue. It's a very old application with a load of mappings files, lots of mappings have one-to-many bags in them, all lazy instantiated. For example: <bag name="Ownership" lazy="true" cascade="all" inverse="true" outer-join="auto" where="fkOwnershipStatusID!=6"> <key column="fkStakeHolderID"/> <one-to-many class="StakeholderLib.Ownership,StakeholderLib" /> </bag> maps to: public virtual IList Ownership { get { if (ownership == null) ownership = new ArrayList(); return ownership; } set { ownership = value; } } Has anyone seen this error before when upgrading to NHibernate 2.1?

  • How to store dynamic references to parts of a text

    - by Antoine L
    In fact, my question concerns an algorithm. I need to be able to attach annotations to certain parts of a text, like a word or a group of words. The first thing that came to me to do so is to store the position of this part (indexes) in the text. For instance, in the text 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog', I'd like to attach an annotation to 'quick brown fox', so the indexes of the annotation would be 4 - 14. But since the text is editable (other annotations could provoke a modification from text's author), the annoted part is likely to move (the indexes could change). In fact, I don't know how to update the indexes of the annoted part. What if the text becomes 'Everyday, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' ? I guess I have to watch every change of the text in the front-end application ? The front-end part of the application will be HTML with Javascript. I will be using PHP to develop the back-end part and every text and annotation will be stored in a database.

  • Nhibernate fires SQL commands

    - by Chris
    Hi all, when updating an entity A, NHibernate also send an SQL update command for some other entity B. A and B are not related. Just before saving entity A, the parent of entity B is loaded via a SQLQuery. Then, when accessed, B is lazy loaded (part of a collection). If I save entity A an update statement for entity B is generated as well. How can that be, that when saving an entity, another entity loaded before but is not related to the entity saved, is updated as well?! Can I somehow track where the update comes from? Btw. I am using an save event listener. Could it be that this is always triggered for entity loaded, even though they are not saved explicitly? public class EntitySaveEventListener : NHibernate.Event.Default.DefaultSaveEventListener { protected override object PerformSaveOrUpdate(SaveOrUpdateEvent e) { //auditing return base.PerformSaveOrUpdate(e); } } Update (sorry for providing not enough info): I tracked it down a bit. A select stateement on a entity called address is executed (is it lazy loaded by a parent). Then I create a new entity called Request. Right before saving this entity a session flush is called which updates the address, even though I did not call save or update on the address. Address is a collection within Request. <class name="Request" table="Request"> <bag name="addresses" access="field" cascade="all-delete-orphan" where="IsDeleted = 0"> <key column="RequestId"/> <one-to-many class="Address"/> </bag> ... // address is fetched only NHibernate.SQL: 2010-02-17 11:47:21,306 [21] DEBUG NHibernate.SQL [(null)] - SELECT addresses0_.RequestId as ServiceP8_3_, .... // session flushed here // address is updated NHibernate.SQL: 2010-02-17 11:47:34,306 [21] DEBUG NHibernate.SQL [(null)] - Batch commands: command 0:UPDATE Address SET Street = @p0, ..... Would the address be updated automatically when it is manipulated somehow even though it is not explicitly saved via it's parent (cascade)?

  • JPA concatenating table names for parent/child @OneToMany
