• LCD monitor flicker when connected to a laptop using VGA

  I have a dual screen setup with two AOC e2450Sw monitors connected to a laptop. The laptop has one HDMI and one VGA output. When one of the monitors is connected using VGA, it flickers or displays static noise. The flickering is fairly subtle and only visible on darker colors. But it is there and noticable and appears like horizontal lines. The problem only appears on the monitor connected to the laptop using the VGA cable. If I swap the monitors, the one connected using VGA is displaying the flicker but not the one connected using HDMI. The simple solution would ofcourse be to connect both monitors using HDMI, but since the laptop only has one VGA and one HDMI out that isn't possible. I've tried tweaking the monitor setting using the OSD menu, but it had little or no effect. Update: After several more trouble shooting hours, it seems the problem is not related to the monitor or VGA cable as the problem persists even if I swap the display with another brand and different cables. So it may be the graphics card? Intel HD Graphics 4000. The laptop is Acer Aspire E1-571.

• How to use different scaling for every monitor?

  One of the new features in Windows 8.1 is the new "Desktop display scaling", which allows user to configure scaling per monitor. I've been trying to get this working in preview but with no success. If I configure the scaling, it always affects all of my monitors. I have two monitors, the main one with a higher resolution and the secondary with "normal" resolution. The secondary monitor is used in portrait mode. I would like to configure the main monitor's scaling as the text is currently too small. Here's how things look at the configuration screen by default: Now if I adjust the scaling, click apply and do relogin, everything is bigger. On both of my monitors. I haven't clicked the "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays", but still the slider seems to affect both of them. If I check the "Let me choose one scaling level", the UI changes to look similar to what we have in Windows 8: Still the problem persists. The scaling is applied to both of my monitors. So, it doesn't matter if I check the box or not, the scaling is always applied to all the displays. Any idea how I could get this to work in preview? I've read some comments which seem to indicate that this should work in preview, though Paul Thurrott mentioned at his Winsupersite article that he either didn't get this to work.

• twin view on gnome when monitor is unplugged

  i have a macbook pro which is often connected to a monitor, twin view on gnome works pretty well, but a problem arises when i disconnect the monitor, any window that resided on that workspace is no longer available. another issue is when i start my computer when a monitor is not present, because xorg.conf file has the monitor configuration in it, my mouse pointer often disappears in the other monitor's virtual space, as if it is currently plugged, osx deals with this issue elegantly by refreshing the display every time a plug in/out occurs, is there anything similar that can be done in linux ?

• Why does Unity not extend to my 2nd monitor, even when it is displaying an X-Screen?

  I recently added a 2nd video card to my system, but unity refuses to extend my desktop over to the second screen. Although the secondary monitor initialises when I boot and I can move the mouse cursor over to the 2nd screen, the screen is otherwise blank (showing no wallpaper or interface elements) and I am unable to move any windows to this monitor. Moving the mouse cursor over to the 2nd monitor changes it from the default cursor to the old-style X cursor, such as the one that appears when you run X-kill, indicating that this screen is initialised in the X Server but that Unity is not recognising it. Although the Nvidia X Server Settings application can see both monitors, the unity systems settings application does not detect the 2nd adapter. Sometimes the additional drivers application can see both adapters, but it doesn't consistently show options for them both. Xrandr also fails to detect the 2nd monitor, but iNex lists both adapters. I have experimented with several different drivers for each adapter and with setting each of the graphics cards as the primary adapter in the BIOS, but this has made little difference. The two adapters are an onboard Geforce 8200 and a PCIE Geforce 7200 GX. The onboard adapter is currently set as the primary, however this adapter crashes whenever I use the Nouveau driver and I have to switch over to the PCIE as a primary whenever I purge the proprietary drivers (switching back when the 304 driver has been reinstalled). It doesn't matter which adapter I set as my primary, the results are the same : one screen showing the unity interface and one screen showing an X-Screen that only displays the mouse cursor. All I want is to be able to run this system in a dual screen configuration. I am not a gamer, nor do I require 3D rendering capabilities. Anything you can suggest to get the desktop to extend across both screens will be massively appreciated!

So will it run without any problems or i need to upgrade the video cards or something too ? The computer is not that much old it has P4 bord and celeron processor with 128 graphics memory . And in properties it shows i can maximum use 1280 x 1024 resolution. I am noob hardware wise So need help on this stuff. Thanks

• DVI to VGA adapter only working in one output

  I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card which has 2 DVI outputs. I tried to set it up with 2 monitors which both have vga connectors on the end and used 2 dvi to vga adapters like these. http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/items/vga-to-dvi.jpg For some reason nothing would reach the monitor, it would remain in standby, if it was plugged into the second output. I tried all the different combinations of cables, adapters and the 2 monitors but whichever monitor that was plugged into the second output wouldn't work. I then randomly decided to plug a different monitor into the second output which has a dvi connector on the end so there was no need for an adapter and plugged it in and it worked! Does anyone know why the second output on the graphics card won't work with a dvi to vga adapter (and the first output will)? I'm really confused! Thanks

• Monitor reset itself and now I can't set the resolution/settings back to how it was before

  I've had my LG 24" widescreen monitor since 2009 and 2 weeks ago I noticed the monitor turned itself off (never had it done this before) so I switched it back on to find all the settings like gamma, resolution etc. different = looked like it had been reset. Everyone in the house swears they never unplugged and plugged it back in. When I opened a webpage the fonts and zoom on the pages were different and my desktop was strange too; fonts of the icons were different etc. The screen seems blurry and when I watch movies the faces look distorted so I thought I would try to first figure out the resolution it used to be but when I go under "Adjust screen resolution" none of the options work and there is no recommended resolution marked; all the options stretch out the screen and looks terrible so right now I have it set to the least distorted one. Then since the resolution wasn't working I set the other manual settings(done by physical buttons on the monitor) back to how it used to be (luckily, I had written these down). The monitor looks better but the resolution makes it a strain to use. I thought maybe some Windows update caused this crap so I tried to System Restore: didn't work. What went wrong? A few questions: 1) What was the likely cause of the monitor shutting down itself and screwing up the settings I have been using since the day I bought the monitor? 2) Why have the fonts changed everywhere unless this is a HDD/video card problem? 3) How do I find the perfect resolution it used to be? The monitor wants me to set it to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't one of the options although I don't remember what resolution I used before. I use the 16:9 setting while I try the available resolution options but nothing looks good! How do I find what it used to be? • CRT as 2nd monitor goes screwy after start up?

  new install of 12.04 on an old dell with a radeon ATI RV516 video card with monitor out and s-video out. During boot up all is good. Both screens operate and look fine. Then just before the desktop appears the cCRT goes purple and is covered in heavy horizontal lines, but as i said during boot up it was fine and the resolution was fine. The main monitor, an lcd, operates normally. everything else works fine, it's just the picture on the CRT that is screwed up. • Need multiple sound outputs to multiple speakers

  How do I play 3 different music tracks at the same time on my computer, such that song1 is played in speaker1, song2 in speaker2... Is this possible programatically? What additional hardware will I need? Do I need 3 seperate sound cards? Given that the hardware is in place, how would I "route" the sound output for a particular song to a particular speaker. Alternatively, is there a special hardware that can handle multiple inputs and outputs? Appreciate your expert opinions.

• Script for Creating Multiple ZIP archives from Multiple Folders

  I want to be able to right click multiple folders inside of a directory in nautilus, and be able to create seperate zip archives from those folders in that same directory. If possible it would also be great if it automatically deleted the old folders. So, if I have 30 folders, I want to select those using control-shift, then go to scripts and run the script, and just have those 30 folders compressed into seperate .zip archives, and have the old folders deleted (if possible). Anyone know how to accomplish this? I suck with terminal, and am looking for a script solution.

• Triple Monitor Stand Recommendations

  I've got two Acer X233Hbid 23" Widescreen LCD Monitors from new egg back last summer, each weigh 10.5lbs a piece I Want to Buy a third Acer 23" (closest I've found is the X235 on Newegg, weighs in at 11.5 lbs) , one of the new ATI video cards that will output to 3 displays, and then a monitor stand that will let me use them in portrait mode like the image below. I found the following: $260 - ERGOTRON 33-323-200 DS100 Triple-Monitor Desk Stand and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of setup and whether it would work for me or not.. • Cannot exit X server, restart, shutdown or drop to tty when VGA monitor active

  I have a strange problem. If I connect an external VGA monitor to my laptop, exiting the X environment in any way crashes the computer. For example, say I am working with my two monitors (the laptop's and one connected to my VGA port) active. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F Key should take me down to a tty. What actually happens is that the VGA screen goes blank, as you would expect, but the laptop screen, although still on, shows nothing. I know the screen is on because it is slightly more illuminated than when it is off. When in this state, I can do nothing to regain access to the machine. I have tried: Ctrl+F Key (and even Ctrl+Alt+F Key, just in case) combinations and none seem to have any effect. Ctrl+Alt+Del : Nothing Magic SysRq key: Nothing Blindly typing my username and password and trying to reboot/shutdown or restart GDM or MDM: Nothing The only thing that works is a hard reset. The exact same behavior occurs when kiling the X server through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, rebooting or shutdown. There is no difference if I reboot/shutdown/log out using the WM's graphical menu or if I use the shutdown or rebootcommands. It is also not WM-dependent. I have the same problem using Cinnamon, Gnome 3, MATE and xfce4. It is, however, VGA dependent. I have tried connecting another VGA monitor and have the same problem. I do not, however, have this problem if a screen is connected to the DisplayPort. It is, therefore, a VGA specific issue. To make things even stranger, this only occurs when both screens are active. If either the laptop screen or the VGA monitor is inactive the problem goes away. Finally, this problem arose when I installed the latest Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). It did not occur with the previous release of LMDE. I am not sure what has changed since I used the same kernel version in both releases (I had upgraded the kernel while on the previous release) and, I think, the same nvidia drivers. Oh, and yes, I have updated the nvidia driver. Hardware: Dell M4500 laptop CPU: Intel Core i7 RAM: 8GB Graphics: nVidia GT216 [Quadro FX 880M] Software: LMDE, kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 Xorg: 1.11.4 nVidia kernel: 295.20-1+3.2.9-1 Possibly relevant files: /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/.xsession-errors Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? • New monitor connected to HDMI adaptor doesn't show output after booting

  Hello out there in the multiple monitors’ world. I am a very old newbie in your world and need help. I just purchased a new Asus VH236H monitor and hooked it up the HDMI port of an ATI Radeon HD4300 / 4500 Series display adaptor. I left the old Princeton LCD19 (TMDS) hooked up to the DVI port of the same display adaptor. Both monitors displayed the boot sequence, after I fired good old Sarastro2 (Asus P5Q Pro Turbo – Dual Core E5300 – 2.60 GHz) up. The Asus lacked one half of a second behind the Princeton until the Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1 boot up was complete. Then the Asus displayed “HDMI NO SIGNAL” and went into hibernation. The Princeton stayed lit up as before. Both monitors are displayed on the “Screen Resolution Setup Display” and I plaid around with them for a while. The only thing I accomplished was to shove the desktop icons from the Princeton to the still hibernating Asus. The “Multiple displays:” is set to “Extend these displays”, the Orientation is “Landscape” and the Resolutions are set on both to the “recommended” one. Both monitors show that they work properly in the advanced Properties display. What am I doing wrong, what am I missing? Never mind the opinions about the different resolutions of the two monitors. I always can unhook the Princeton and give it to a Goodwill Store if I do not like the setup. I just would like to make it work. Any constructive help is very much appreciated, Thank you. Thank you Anees Bakrain Only the ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series adapter is displayed in the Device Manager, for that reason I have to assume that the onboard display adaptor is not active. All 40 drivers of Sarastro2 are up to date and the HDMI cable can not be the problem because both monitors displayed the boot sequence up to the moment when Windows 7 was loaded completely. This was the moment, when the Asus monitor lost its signal. Both connectors, HDMI and DVI are connected and removing the DVI connector would not solve my problem of running both monitors simultaneously. However, your suggestions shifted my seventy one year old brain into the next gear. The only question remaining is; “Why the signals to the Asus monitor stop after the sequence is complete”. The ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series adapter seems to be capable of sending simultaneous HDMI and DVI signals, what is done during the boot sequence. Why do the signals change after the boot sequence is complete is the key question or der springende Punkt? Is this a correct assumption slhck?

• Cannot move Google Chrome tabs to different monitor in ubuntu

  When I use Chrome in Windows, I can grab a tab and drag it over to my second monitor and it will automatically maximize. In ubuntu, when I try to do the same, the tab will snap back to my primary monitor and maximize there. There is a related bug report for Chromium that is labeled "fixed" here, but when I try using Chromium instead of Chrome, I get the same behavior (not what I called fixed). So far the only other thing I've tried is changing themes, resetting Chrome's settings to default and tested Chromium as I pointed out above. I've also tried installing Chrome from a live Linux disc, and the behavior is still the same. The issue does not occur with Firefox, but I need to use Chrome for work-related reasons, so simply switching isn't really an option personally (though it is a viable workaround). I'm using Chrome 30 and ubuntu 13.04. Does anyone have any solutions?

• HP Probook 6550b has issues with an external monitor

  I recently got a new HP Probook 6550b laptop for work. However, very often, when left alone (not put to sleep), the built in display will go dark. Not only that, but whenever I plug in an external monitor, the display will blank out as well. Sometimes after this happens, putting the laptop to sleep and then waking it up solves the problem. But only sometimes and only for a short time. The next time I plug in my monitor, it happens again. I know this isn't only my problem - 6 other people got the same laptop as I have at the same time, and we're all having such issues. Any suggestions as to the root of this problem and a way to fix it? It's driving me crazy!
