  • Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

    I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

  • XBMC freezes pc after viewing movies

    Tough to replicate, but basically after watching any movie in my library on XBMC, it'll randomly start freezing my pc. All I can do is either force shutdown by holding down the power button or wait for it to shut itself down. It's not any particular movie, it's not any particular amount of time watching one. It only happens while using XBMC. PC is older, I know the hardware is outdated, but it's not overheating nor is a simple movie too much for it to play, at least I don't think it is. Specs: Intel Core 2 6400. nVidia Quardro FX 560 4GB RAM So any suggestions? I don't have any bug/error reports because it doesn't print out any. I'm trying to find a program like XBMC, as I like having my movies organized and not have to hunt through folders to find them, so any suggestions there?

  • In dual boot PC, the boot/GRUB menu suddenly disappeared (Ubuntu option is not appearing anymore)

    I have been using Ubuntu 13.04 as my primary OS for quite sometime on Sony VAIO laptop with other OS being windows 8 (never use it). Till today, everything was fine. In the evening I had shut down my PC and closed the lid; Typically I do this when the shutting down screen is still on. But probably this time it was fatal. When I again restarted my PC, now no menu is appearing for selecting OS and it directly goes for Windows 8. My question is similar to this thread, but I don't have Ubuntu CD as I had installed using pen drive sometime back. Is there any (genuine or workaround) easier way to get back the GRUB menu back in the place? Note that keyboard shortcuts in Sony VAIO is different, here I have an "Assist" menu as well to get those internal options.

    I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game. I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game. According to their site: The text on Wikia sites is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA). I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website? If needed I would not be opposed to pasting the content and providing a source link at the end of each paragraph. Can I paste the content into my site? Thanks for the help!

    I'm struggling with a task as I was given to practice UML and use cases. The problem is that I should model computer version of a board game so I am unsure about a few things. obviously it does not matter if you play against the PC or another player, the actions are the same. The game is simply like tic tac toe. E.g. Actor Player ---(Place a diamond)-----include----(Check for a row)---include--(Swap players) But the game is played on the PC, so is Check for row really a use case? And the same with Swap players? Because the system would do that. On the other hand, if it was not, how could I continue?

  • Non-trivial functions that operate on any monad

    I'm looking for examples of interesting methods that take an arbitrary monad and do something useful with it. Monads are extremely general, so methods that operate on monads are widely applicable. On the other hand, methods I know of that can apply to any monad tend to be... really, really trivial. Barely worth extracting into a function. Here's a really boring example: joinTwice. It just flattens an m m m t into an m t: join n = n >>= id joinTwice n = (join . join) n main = print (joinTwice [[[1],[2, 3]], [[4]]]) -- prints [1,2,3,4] The only non-trivial method for monads that I know of is bindFold (see my answer below). Are there more?

    I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer.But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

  • Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

    One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up.     I have a problem with ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my custom tower pc in which the OS hangs at specific points:- - live usb with persistence: hangs when mouse appears. - installed to hard disk: hangs after login, logon sound never plays. i am a relative newbie with linux so any terminal output would not make sense to me :) the pc specs are as follows: - MSI MS-7301 Cuba motherboard - 3GB DDR2 RAM (NOT dual channel) - ATI Radeon HD 5450 gfx card the live usb works fine on all other PC's i tried it on. could any one help me ?

    Hi I recently built my own home studio PC. i5 CPU) 8Gb RAM, solid state drive etc. Basically the fastest PC I've ever built. I have a 32bit version of XP and all the music software I have runs on this. However I want to use all the RAM and can only do so by moving to 64bit Windows. My questions are: Will Ubuntu run my Audio software or would I need to get Linux specific Audio software? Are there any good (pro) shareware linux based multi-track audio software packages?     I can't visualize in my mind the network traffic flow. eg. If there are 15 pc's in a LAN. When packet goes from router to local LAN, do it passes all the computers? Means did it goes to ehernet card of every computer and those computers accept the packet based on their physical address. To which pc the packet will go first? To the nearest to the router? What happen if that first pc captures that packet(though it is not for it)? What happens when a pc broadcast a message? Do it have to generate 14 packets for all the pc's or only one packet reach to all pc's? If it is one packet and captured by first pc, how other pc's can get that? I can't imagine how this traffic is exactly flows? May be my analogy is completely wrong. Can anybody explain me this? Thanks in advance.

  • Stream internal sound from mac to pc?

    I'm using a headphone connected to a PC, however, I also use a mac. I want to make it so that the internal sound, coming from the mac will also be heard over at the pc. So I want to convert the headphone to a somewhat central sound output where I hear both pc and mac's internal sounds. That includes error alerts, mp3s played on iTunes, etc. Is there an app that will let me do this? Just to clarify, the PC is running Windows XP.

  • Nokia PC Suite hangs at installing required drivers and doesn't connect to phone

    I am unable to connect my Nokia 2690 to my PC via data cable using Nokia PC Suite under Windows XP SP3 Pro 32 bit. Every time I connect my mobile using the data cable, the Nokia App shows a window where it says it's "Installing the required drivers. Please wait". But even after several hours my phone never conects to my PC and the screen remains there idle. I checked in he task manager, Nokia PC Suite didn't go unresponsive.
