  • How to use nsupdate to create NAPTR record

    - by Jon Skarpeteig
What's a working example for creating a NAPTR record using nsupdate against Bind9? man nsupdate sais: update add {domain-name} {ttl} [class] {type} {data...} Adds a new resource record with the specified ttl, class and data. But I can't seem to find the correct format for NAPTR My attempt: echo -e 'update add enum.example.com 60 IN NAPTR 1.1.1.1.1."u"."E2U+sip"."!^.*[email protected]!" .'"\nsend"|nsupdate results in: invalid rdata format: not a valid number syntax error

  • Generating a record of the full(-ish) package management state

    - by intuited
I'm about to make some system changes and I'd like to have a record of my current happy system state. Is there a convenient way to create a record of this? I'd like to keep track of info like currently installed packages and their versions which packages are pinned at what version which source (as in /etc/apt/sources.list) they were installed from whether they were installed directly or automatically installed as a dependency of a different package "unknown unknowns": ie stuff that I don't know that I should be keeping track of but which may be important when trying to figure out why something doesn't work In short, I'd like to keep as much of the aptitude database as possible. What's the best way to do this? It would be nice if the resulting records were easily readable, though this is not really essential. It would be extra nice if it were readily versionable through an SCM tool like git. There is a superuser question that partially answers this, but it only provides the list of currently installed packages.

  • Cannot create a new domain in an existing active directory forest

    - by Mackenzie Carr
I have a domain controller setup on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Forest) and I have another Windows Server 2008 R2 (New Domain) and I want to create a new domain in an existing forest. I get the following error: An Active Directory domain controller for the domain mackdev.mackenziecarr.com could not be contacted The error was "no records found for the given DNS query" The query was for the SRV record for: _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.mackdev.mackenziecarr.com I've seem to have tried everything even tried adding this record to the DNS server of the primary forest. I even successfully joined this server to the domain without any issues but trying to create a new domain under the existing forest is no luck. The primary forest I.P. address is 192.168.2.20 the server that I am using to try to make a child domain is 192.168.2.21 My ipconfig are as follows: I.P. Address: 192.168.2.21 Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.2.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.2.20

  • Finding the A Record for a Home Server [closed]

    - by Ryan Allred
I have a hosted website that allows me to add subdomains and point them to different locations on the server. I also know that I can change the 'A Record' to point it to a different IP address. Now, here's the question, I have a home server that I need to access though this hosted website's domain name. How would I go about setting up the 'A Record' on the server to point to my home server. I'm usually pretty good about keyword searches but on this one, I'm pretty lost as to what to search for.

  • Issue with CNAME and Virtual Hosts

    - by mrc0der
I'm using Apache and I have a CNAME DNS record for sub2.sub1.domain1.com that points to sub1.domain1.com And I have an A DNS record for sub1.domain1.com that points to the IP. Then in my httpd.conf file I have: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.domain1.com DocumentRoot /domain1/www </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName sub1.domain.com DocumentRoot /domain1/sub1/www </VirtualHost> Yet I appear to be missing something, as when you visit sub2.sub1.domain1.com, it shows you the page for domain1.com. When you visit the sub1.domain1.com, it shows the correct page for sub1.

  • Confused about SPF Record setup

    - by Ramon A.
Hello, I'm confused on how I should set up SPF records for my multiple domains. Here is my configuration: the setup is: (a) domain1.com points to server1 (b) mail.domain1.com points to server2 (c) domain2.com is a vhost in server1 (d) domain3.com is a vhost in server1 (e) and so on.. I want the SPF record to be set up so that domain1.com, domain2.com, domain3.com are authorized to send emails using mail.domain1.com. I'm confused on wether to put the SPF record on each domain, or on the main server only.

  • MX records and CNAMEs

    - by sly
I realize similar questions were asked/answered on this, but I have a subtle detail to which I can not find answers anywhere. Let's exemplify with the following DNS entries: foo.example.com A 1.1.1.1 bar.example.com A 1.1.1.2 wee.example.com CNAME foo.example.com foo.example.com MX foo.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com bar.example.com MX bar.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Note the last line. My institution has that kind of MX records, where for each MX record the value has the label prepended. Question 1 is, what is the motivation for this (why not just s9a1.psmtp.com)? Question 2 is more subtle and follows.. My understanding is that an MX record should not contain any aliases for neither label nor the value, i.e. the following would be bad practice: wee.example.com MX wee.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Then, how should the RRs look for the alias wee.example.com? Thanks!

  • How to find a hidden streaming video/audio link and record it

    - by Stan
I've been using 'URL snooper' to find the hidden streaming url. And feed that url to VLC to record streaming video/audio. But the VLC can't read those url. Then I also found that the url is like a floating url that changes every several hours. So the same audio station won't have same url. The streaming audio provider has bunches of audio stations and shuffle the link frequently. Is there any way to record the streaming media in this case? Please advise, thanks.

  • Why can't I create an Alias Resource Record Set for an EC2 instance

    - by praterade
I have been working with AWS for over a year, setting up EC2 instances, domains, ELBs, etc. When I want to assign a subdomain to an EC2 instance, I have to create an elastic IP (that I pay for), then assign a CNAME record to that elastic IP. When I want to assign a subdomain to an ELB (load balancer) instance, I just create an alias resource record set to the ELB. I've read over the docs and don't understand why AWS doesn't support aliasing to instances. Am I missing a key concept here? Wouldn't it be simpler to just alias EC2 instances and skip the whole elastic IP bit?

  • Point example.com to webserver in DNS record

    - by ggstevens
I have a Mac Mini Server (named Server) with the following DNS setup Primary Zone: example.com mysql-host.example.com machine (10.0.0.101) server.example.com machine (10.0.0.100) server.example.com nameserver (10.0.0.100) www.example.com machine (10.0.0.102) www.example.com is a linux box with Apache. How do I get both example.com and www.example.com to work. Right now, I can view my website with www.example.com only. I know there's nothing that points example.com to the IP, but when I create a machine record without a hostname I get an error (This machine record cannot be created without a host name.).

  • SPF record doesn't work (not sure which DNS server to tweak)

    - by Ion
Problem: Google (and perhaps others) marks our emails as SPF neutral. Let me give you some background about the setup: initially got a dedicated server (Hetzner) with Plesk installed to host a domain/web application, let's say: bigjaws.com. Plesk automatically creates a DNS zone for it with some records for the various services it provides out of the box, e.g. webmail.bigjaws.com as a CNAME to bigjaws.com to provide Horde/whatever, etc. Let me point out four relevant of these records (where XXX.XXX.XXX.158 is our dedicated IP): bigjaws.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 mail.bigjaws.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 bigjaws.com MX (10) mail.bigjaws.com. bigjaws.com. TXT v=spf1 +a +mx -all The above records are not(?) valid anymore though, because after using this dedicated server for a while, our site got bigger and bigger so we decided to move our operations over to AWS (EC2, RDS, ELB, etc), but we retained the mail functionality as is, i.e. emails from [email protected] are sent by connecting to our dedicated server where Plesk takes care of things. This was decided in order not to setup anything from scratch. Of course for all DNS-related things we now use Route53. In Route53 I have the following records: mail.schoox.com. A XXX.XXX.XXX.158 bigjaws.com. MX (10) mail.bigjaws.com bigjaws.com. SPF "v=spf1 +ip4:XXX.XXX.XXX.158 +mx ~all" From my understanding of SPF, the SPF status should have been passed: I designate that all email being sent by bigjaws.com from XXX.XXX.XXX.158 are valid/not spam (I added +mx there but I'm not sure if needed). When a mail server receives an email, doesn't it lookup the SPF record of the domain and checks against the IP it got the email from? Checking with spfquery: root@box:~# spfquery -ip XXX.XXX.XXX.158 -sender [email protected] -rcpt-to [email protected] StartError Context: Failed to query MAIL-FROM ErrorCode: (2) Could not find a valid SPF record Error: No DNS data for 'bigjaws.com'. EndError noneneutral Please see http://www.openspf.org/Why?id=employee1%40bigjaws.com&ip=XXX.XXX.XXX.158&receiver=spfquery : Reason: default spfquery: XXX.XXX.XXX.158 is neither permitted nor denied by domain of bigjaws.com Received-SPF: neutral (spfquery: XXX.XXX.XXX.158 is neither permitted nor denied by domain of bigjaws.com) client-ip=XXX.XXX.XXX.158; [email protected]; If I go to the address listed above (openspf.org) it tells me that the message should have been accepted(!): spfquery rejected a message that claimed an envelope sender address of [email protected]. spfquery received a message from static.158.XXX.XXX.XXX.clients.your-server.de (XXX.XXX.XXX.158) that claimed an envelope sender address of [email protected]. The domain bigjaws.com has authorized static.158.XXX.XXX.XXX.clients.your-server.de (XXX.XXX.XXX.158) to send mail on its behalf, so the message should have been accepted. It is impossible for us to say why it was rejected. What should I do? If the problem persists, contact the bigjaws.com postmaster. Also, here are some headers from an email sent by one of our [email protected] addresses to a gmail.com address (by the way, bigjaws.de listed in the "Received: from" field was the initial domain hosted on the dedicated server before adding the .com one -- both are still listed as separate subscriptions under Plesk). • Cannot resolve a single A Record from client machine

    - by Alex
I set up a simple Bind server on my VPS and it is working properly. The problem occurs with my local windows machines, which are connected to internet through the home router. I created an A-record named 'dev' and it is invisible from my local network for some reason, though people from other locations can resolve dev.mydomain.com. Ironically, dev.mydomain.com cannot be resolved for myself only. If I add another A-record, say, 'gamma' then it becomes visible from my local windows machines instantly. So this is just for that particular 'dev' name. The only difference is that I had dev.mydomain.com server on another IP but that was a month ago; all nameservers have been changed since then. I tried to reboot my router and flushed dns cache on windows machines: no result. Thank you in advance.

  • best way to record local modifications to an application's configuration files

    - by Menelaos Perdikeas
I often install applications in Linux which don't come in package form but rather one just downloads a tarball, unpacks it, and runs the app out of the exploded folder. To adjust the application to my environment I need to modify the default configuration files, perhaps add an odd script of my own and I would like to have a way to record all these modifications automatically so I can apply them to another environment. Clearly, the modifications can not be reproduced verbatim as things like IP addresses or username need to change from system to system; still an exhaustive record to what was changed and added would be useful. My solution is to use a pattern involving git. Basically after I explode the tarball I do a git init and an initial commit and then I can save to a file the output of git diff and a cat of all files appearing as new in the git status -s. But I am sure there are more efficient ways. ???

  • Open Directory authenticated bind succeeds, but creates incomplete record

    - by Jay Thompson
I have about a dozen Macs running 10.6.7 or 10.6.8, which are all failing to bind properly to my new 10.7.4 Server OD. I can bind them just fine via Directory Utility or dsconfigldap, and it reports success. However, when I look at the record, it is failing to write the MAC address. Even if I manually update the record with the MAC address, MCX doesn't do anything and clients can't log in to OD accounts. All of the affected clients have hundreds of lines in the /Library/Logs/DirectoryService.error.log like so: 2012-09-15 22:23:18 EDT - T[0x00007FFF70292CC0] - GetMACAddress returned 0x *** bad control string *** 8x I do know that all of these clients were previously managed with the Guest computer account, and I also know that they were all imaged with a DeployStudio image when they were purchased. I've tried dscacheutil -flushcache, but after that I'm drawing a blank. Google has a few hits, but nothing very helpful. Re-imaging would be ideal but probably isn't going to happen. Anyone come across this before?

  • SIP Service to record all calls?

    - by TK Kocheran
I read an article that I can't find at the moment which detailed a way to have Google Voice point to a SIP phone number which forwards to your phone in order to take advantage of the SIP service in order to Have all calls use a data connection = no usage of cell-phone plan minutes. Record each and every conversation.* I really want to be able to accomplish this, primarily issue number 2, as all of the phone recorder tools in the Android Market essentially don't work for my Nexus One. I figure that I have one of two options with this. I could 1) use an existing (hopefully free) service which will do this for me or 2) I could set up a SIP service at my home. to somehow forward calls through my home server which will record the calls as well as forward calls to my cell phone. Obviously, the path of least resistance is the one I'd like to go down. Can anyone help me out with this? * I do understand that the legality of this varies from state to state here in the US.

  • how to record videos from my laptop webcam?

    - by Nick
I am not sure but I can't seem to turn on my webcam to record videos which I would broad cast somewhere later on. I have a HP G62 Laptop, and the cam turns on when I use programs like Skype and other Video Calling clients, other wise I can't turn it own, as I don't seem to know how. Laptop: HP G62 Notebook PC, AMD Atholon II P230 Dual-Core, Windows 7: Home Premium Can some one tell me how do I turn on my webcam and record videos? Or is there some sort of a software? I tend to read stuff I wrote in Word, so if there is a program I need it to be in the tray dock and not to bug me, while I am moving between different documents/web pages.

I am going to look at this, but is this the recommended method of handling such a problem? It seems rather heavyweight considering we're talking about in front or behind Thanks in advance.

  • "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE" not working for Hibernate and MySQL

    - by Andres Rodriguez
Hi, We have a system in which we must use pessimistic locking in one entity. We are using hibernate, so we use LockMode.UPGRADE. However, it does not lock. The tables are InnoDB We have checked that locking works correctly in the database (5.0.32), so this bug http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=18184 seems to be no problem. We have checked that datasource includes the autoCommit = false parameter. We have checked that the SQL hibernate (version 3.2) generates includes the " FOR UPDATE". Thanks,
