  • 12.04 Taking forever for no apparent reason

    First off, I'd just like to say how much I'm loving Ubuntu so far. It's one of my first steps into Linux, but so far it's blown away Windows in almost every regard. Now, onto my problem. My brothers have some old Dell Dimensions that are barely clinging to life. They were both running XP Home Premium. The 2400 installed just fine, no issues at all. Now, the other computer, the 3000 isn't clearing the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the pulsing dots. I've tried multiple discs, including the exact same one that gave me no issue in the other computer, and I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the problem might lay? They're both 32 bit Intel processors, and it's the correct version of Ubuntu. Is it a bad disc drive? Hardware incompatibility? Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.   • What exercises counter the back pain of sitting at a computer for 15 hours a day? [on hold]

    I work up to 15 hours a day (not everyday :)) programming. When I do this I get a very sore lower back. I don't want to spend $1000 on a special chair like Joel Spolsky says. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Has anybody encountered this and found an exercise/other method to combat it? Maybe somebody with more physical education than me about opposing muscle groups or something. PS (not working fifteen hours a day isn't an answer, it's how I work best) and it's not off topic as programming is about more than code - it's a verb.

  • Rendering multiple squares fast?

    so I'm doing my first steps with openGL development on android and I'm kinda stuck at some serious performance issues... What I'm trying to do is render a whole grid of single colored squares on to the screen and I'm getting framerates of ~7FPS. The squares are 9px in size right now with one pixel border in between, so I get a few thousand of them. I have a class "Square" and the Renderer iterates over all Squares every frame and calls the draw() method of each (just the iteration is fast enough, with no openGL code the whole thing runs smootlhy at 60FPS). Right now the draw() method looks like this: // Prepare the square coordinate data GLES20.glVertexAttribPointer(mPositionHandle, COORDS_PER_VERTEX, GLES20.GL_FLOAT, false, vertexStride, vertexBuffer); // Set color for drawing the square GLES20.glUniform4fv(mColorHandle, 1, color, 0); // Draw the square GLES20.glDrawElements(GLES20.GL_TRIANGLES, drawOrder.length, GLES20.GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT, drawListBuffer); So its actually only 3 openGL calls. Everything else (loading shaders, filling buffers, getting appropriate handles, etc.) is done in the Constructor and things like the Program and the handles are also static attributes. What am I missing here, why is it rendering so slow? I've also tried loading the buffer data into VBOs, but this is actually slower... Maybe I did something wrong though. Any help greatly appreciated! :)

The one discussed in this video (Wordtracker.com) seems very good, but has gone commercial unfortunately which is not what Im looking for.   • After downloading the Wubi installer, what else do I need to do?

    If I were to install Ubuntu via the method stated here; http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer Will I need to download/install anything else first? Do I simply select "Boot Ubuntu" and then go about my business? Will my HDD need partitioning beforehand? If I save files while running Ubuntu where do they go when I decide to boot Windows instead? Just trying to figure out the best way to use Ubuntu without removing the Windows OS (:

    Hi I've been given the following html file system with no knowledge of where it came from. To me this appears to be from a web server. I've been hitting Google on "Sam" smsLtd can't find to much, is this "SAM" a propitiatory web server ? Can I throw this up on an Apache or IIS server ? Reason I ask is there are some xml data files that seem to assign permissions and logins. Figured I'd ask as I have never seen it before.

The customer receives the message from the address "[email protected]" The customer replies to the message from [email protected] and it is received by John, Mary, or Sam depending on who sent the message (if it was sent by John, the reply is sent to John, and so on). All users should also be able to send emails from their respective addresses as well (e.g. [email protected], etc.) Is this possible? If so, how can it be accomplished?

I am currently using the AXL snippet <firstname>FirstNameFilter</firstname><lastname>LastNameFilter</lastname> This will work as & between two filters. for example my filter is FirstNameFilter = sam* LastNameFilter = joy* this will return the entries which satisfies both the filters. But i want to filter in such a way that we need to or this filter like i need to get the users with First Name is sam* or last name = joy*. Whether anyone did such AXL programming?   • How do I use long names to refer to Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA)?

    Commonly domain user accounts are used as service accounts. With domain user accounts, the username can easily be as long as 64 characters as long as the User Principal Name (UPN) is used to refer to the account, eg [email protected]. If you still use the legacy pre-Windows 2000 names (SAM) you have to truncate it to ~20 characters, eg mydomain\truncname. When using the New-ADServiceAccount PowerShell cmdlet to create a new Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) and a name longer than 15 characters is specified, an error is returned. To specify a longer name, the SAM name must be specified separately, eg: New-ADServiceAccount -Name longname -SamAccountName truncname ... To configure a service to run as the new gMSA, I can use the legacy username format mydomain\truncname$ but using usernames with a maximum of 15 characters in 2013 is a smell. How do I refer to a gMSA using the UPN-style format instead? I tried the longname$@domainfqdn approach but that didn't work. It also seems that the gMSA object in AD doesn't have a userPrincipalName attribute value specified.

  • I am unable to connect to my netbook from any machine on my network until the netbook has pinged it

    I have a rather strange issue with my netbook on my local network. When trying to connect to it in any way from a remote system it does not appear to find it. However if I get the netbook to ping the machine trying to connect it mystically appears to work. Below is the ping test from my main PC to the netbook. Additional info: No responses on TCP dump from the netbook. Same result when booting into Ubuntu from a USB key. No issue when using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Process Power to the People that Create Engagement

    Organizations often speak about their engagement problems as if the problem is the people they are trying to engage - employees,  partners, customers and citizens.  The reality of most engagement problems is that the processes put in place to engage are impersonal, inflexible, unintuitive, and often completely ignorant of the population they are trying to serve. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Delight? How appropriate during this short week of the US Independence Day Holiday that we're focusing on People, Process and Engagement. As we celebrate this holiday in the US and the historic independence we gained (sorry Brits!) - it's interesting to think back to 1776 to the creation of that pivotal document, the Declaration of Independence. What tremendous pressure to create an engaging document and founding experience they must have felt. "On June 11, 1776, in anticipation of the impending vote for independence from Great Britain, the Continental Congress appointed five men — Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston — to write a declaration that would make clear to people everywhere why this break from Great Britain was both necessary and inevitable. The committee then appointed Jefferson to draft a statement. Jefferson produced a "fair copy" of his draft declaration, which became the basic text of his "original Rough draught." The text was first submitted to Adams, then Franklin, and finally to the other two members of the committee. Before the committee submitted the declaration to Congress on June 28, they made forty-seven emendations to the document. During the ensuing congressional debates of July 1-4, 1776, Congress adopted thirty-nine further revisions to the committee draft. (http://www.constitution.org) If anything was an attempt for engaging the hearts and minds of the 13 Colonies at the time, this document certainly succeeded in its mission. ...Their tools at the time were pen and ink and parchment.   • Using Crypt function Python 3.3.2

    In Windows and Python version 3.3.2, I try and call the python module like so: hash2 = crypt(word, salt) I import it at the top of my program like so: from crypt import * The result I get is the following: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\none\of\your\business\adams.py", line 10, in <module> from crypt import * File "C:\Python33\lib\crypt.py", line 3, in <module> import _crypt ImportError: No module named '_crypt' However, when I execute the same file adams.py in Ubuntu, with Python 2.7.3, it executes perfectly - no errors. I tried the following to resolve the issue for my Windows & Python 3.3.2 (though I'm sure the OS isn't the issue, the Python version or my use of syntax is the issue): Rename the directory in the Python33 directory from Lib to lib Rename the crypt.py in lib to _crypt.py. Browsed internet to download anything remotely appropriate to resemble _crypt.py It's not Python, right? It's me...(?) I'm using syntaxes to import and use external modules that are acceptable in 2.7.3, but not in 3.3.2. Or have I found a bug in 3.3.2?

    I'm using YUI 2's calendar in YUI 3. I want to make a few minor changes to the default sam skin. What is the best way to do that? Also, how does it load Sam's skin CSS? I didn't manually include it (though it seems like I should so the user can download it in the one request I make to the combo loader for css?). Note: The script does include more than I need for just YUI 2's calendar, but that's because I use YUI 3 for other things irrelevant to this question.

Why does doing it the template_query itself changes? I'm new to python and I'm getting pretty confused.
