  • SSIS Denali as part of “Enterprise Information Management”

    When watching the SQL PASS session “What’s Coming Next in SSIS?” of Steve Swartz, the Group Program Manager for the SSIS team, an interesting question came up: Why is SSIS thought of to be BI, when we use it so frequently for other sorts of data problems? The answer of Steve was that he breaks the world of data work into three parts: Process of inputs BI   Enterprise Information Management All the work you have to do when you have a lot of data to make it useful and clean and get it to the right place. This covers master data management, data quality work, data integration and lineage analysis to keep track of where the data came from. All of these are part of Enterprise Information Management. Next, Steve told Microsoft is developing SSIS as part of a large push in all of these areas in the next release of SQL. So SSIS will be, next to a BI tool, part of Enterprise Information Management in the next release of SQL Server. I'm interested in the different ways people use SSIS, I've basically used it for ETL, data migrations and processing inputs. In which ways did you use SSIS?

  • Mobile App Notifications in the Enterprise Space: UX Considerations

    Here is a really super website of UX patterns for Android: Android Patterns. I was particularly interested in the event-driven notification patterns (aka status bar notifications to developers). Android - unlike iOS (i.e., the iPhone) - offers a superior centralized notifications system for users.   (Figure copyright Android Patterns)   Research in the enterprise applications space shows how users on-the-go, prefer this approach, as: Users can manage their notification alerts centrally, across all media, apps and for device activity, and decide the order in which to deal with them, and when. Notifications, unlike messages in a dialog or information message in the UI, do not block a task flow (and we need to keep task completion to under three minutes). See the Anti-Patterns slideshare presentation on this blocking point too. These notifications must never interrupt a task flow by launching an activity from the background. Instead, the user can launch an activity from the notification. What users do need is the ability to filter this centralized approach, and to personalize the experience of which notifications are added, what the reminder is, ability to turn off, and so on. A related point concerning notifications is when used to provide users with a record of actions then you can lighten up on lengthy confirmation messages that pop up (toasts in the Android world) used when transactions or actions are sent for processing or into a workflow. Pretty much all the confirmation needs to say is the action is successful along with key data such as dollar amount, customer name, or whatever. I am a user of Android (Nexus S), BlackBerry (Curve), and iOS devices (iPhone 3GS and 4). In my opinion, the best notifications user experience for the enterprise user is offered by Android. Blackberry is good, but not as polished and way clunkier than Android’s. What you get on the iPhone, out of the box, is useless in the enterprise. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs.     We (developement team 4 upto 7 people) use Sparxsystems EA for requirement analysis, modeling etc. Do you know any well-working methods to use EA and some task/issue tracking system like Redmine/Mantis/Trac ? The problem is not to duplicate functionality (there are issues/tasks/changes in Redmine and EA) but to have some user friendly interface (preffered web) to manage tasks and issues. By user-friendly I mean "my tasks" page add effort / time tracking easy "add issue" by everyone (simple bug tracking system) mail notifications

    I'm trying to add a range of - 365 days and + 365 days but it appears that using this attribute in EL 4.1 only accepts a special ISO formatted string ... thus I can't simply add a normal string to this validation routine. <DateTimeRangeValidator(DateTime.Now.AddDays(2), DateTime.Now.AddDays(4))> _ I wanted to do something similar to the above - fyi Does anyone know how you can force this attribute to accept this ISO formatted string w/out hand coding this value?

    We have an application that is undergoing performance testing. Today, I decided to take a dump of w3wp & load it in windbg to see what is going on underneath the covers. Is this 'expected behavior', or perhaps have we implemented something improperly? The test ran hours ago, so i would have expected any timeouts to have occurred already.

    We use Eclipse as the IDE for developing all sorts of Java/J2EE applications in our 150 people odd IT department. One of the common problems we have been seeing is that developers download and install different versions of Eclipse and plugins based on their personal likes and dislikes. We have been trying to bring some consistency to this and have standardized on the version and the plugins that developers should be using. So the problem now is how do we distribute this installation to the team. We have zipped the directories and shared it through a shared drive. But I am looking for a better solution using some kind of provisioning tool for Eclipse using which people can install the IDE or get updates. Has anyone faced this problem? What are your solutions to this? How do you ensure a standard Eclipse environment across developers? I found Yoxos as a potential solution to this. Does anyone have any experience with it? Can p2 be used to do this?

    Hi All, We use the caching and logging application blocks from entlib 4.1. We want to keep the configuration of those two in seperate files. How can we achieve this? It looks like entlib is always using the selectedSource as it configuration.   • Log to rolling CSV file with Enterprise Library

    Need logging to: Rolling file, to avoid 1 big log file. CSV format for easier look up. I can see EntLib (5.0) have Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.RollingFlatFileTraceListener to log to rolling log file. To make the log entries look like a CSV row, I can change the Logging.Formatters.TextFormatter.Template to put double quote around the values. Also change the Listener's Footer and Header to nothing, so they won't be output. Under normal circumstance, this would give me a well formed CSV file. However if a token value in the Template contain double quote, this would not be escaped, hence the log file become an invalid CSV file. Is there any way to resolve this? Is there any alternative solutions to this problem?

    Jesus, Krishna, Budda! I've migrated to EntLib 5.0, but classes like ISymmetricCryptoProvider are not recognized anymore. Funny to say that Data, Logging and other blocks are working compiling fine. I really don't know why this particular project it's causing too many trouble on VS2010!
