• Scalable WordPress Host for High-Volume Site?

  I need recommendations for a scalable web host for a high volume WordPress web site. For my purposes, high-volume might be 100K-500K visitors/hour. Might think towards a 1M/hour burst rate as a "high water mark." I know WP isn't the highest-performing platform out there (ha!), but it's non-negotiable. I can do "the usual optimizations" (e.g. put static files in a CDN, run and follow the advice of performance analyzers like YSlow, etc). But it will still be WordPress, and there will be a dozen or so plugins involved. So, where to host the site? Most "what's the best WordPress host?" discussions seem to focus on lowest-cost. I need the opposite. What are the high-volume, scalable, or clustered WordPress hosts with which you've had great experiences?

• Hexagonal Tiles

  i'm doing a tactical game (X-Com / Fallout style) for fun. I've decided to use an hexagonal map, but i'm having a graphic problem. My current map display is HUD-like, with only the border of the map cells displayed, without any texture. it's simple and allow for display of different types of informations by varying the color of the border. For exemple the "danger view mode" displays the borders with a color going from green (no damage possible) to red (prob of damage 90%). Now, It's a bit hard to différenciate the kind of tile the player is on. I could put a plain color (green is grass, pale blue is water...), but this is going to limit the possibilities. Thus, i would like to display a texture on my tiles. Since the map are generated, i can not use a picture for the whole map with the HUD over. So, my question is : does any one knows how i could generate the sealess hexagonal textures (algo or plugin), or if there is a site with some hexagonal tiles ?

• How should I land my next consulting gig? [closed]

  For the last couple of years, I've been working on speculative projects, expanding my skillset with side work, and paying the bills while having a blast consulting for startups. However, for a number of personal reasons, I need to spend the next 6-9 months maximizing my cash income. I want to put this into effect starting in early August. So that means I have one month to put the necessary client list/portfolio/resume together to start making this happen. As a programmer, I am very proficient in building Django web apps. I can write the necessary SQL, python, javascript, and css to build every part of a Django app, and then do the system administration necessary to deploy on AWS using EC2. I can also rig up a CDN to work seemlessly with the app using S3 and Cloudfront. I have built GIS applications using GeoDjango and PostGIS, and I have constructed social video apps by implementing Encoding.com as a service to prepare raw video files for consumption on the web. I am also moderately proficient in programming PHP, Java, and C#. I have built web apps in PHP, and desktop apps in Java and C#. I have dabbled with Android applications and iPhone apps, but nothing I would show off. I have experience doing SEO, social media marketing, and content marketing. Many of my clients have needed their apps promoted after they were built, and I was always happy to oblige when I could. I have also worked with biometrics technology including fingerprints for government contractors. This was as much a business analyst role as it was a programming gig, as I had to help answer RFPs, make checklists, and work around reems and reems of regulations to build applications that met very large bureaucratic requirements. I only have two real requirements for my next gig(s): 1) Work remotely. I live in North East Ohio, and I don't plan on leaving, but I wouldn't mind traveling one or two weeks out of every month to service clients who need on-site help. 2) $60.00hr-$∞ USD contracting rate. So what should I do for the next 30 days to achieve this? Should I target some large company and learn the requisite buzzwords to impress them? Should I learn some new language or technology? Polish some skill that I already have? Should I build something using my current skillset, or with some new technology? Should I put a website for my consultancy together to market myself? Should I do that using latest technology x, y, and z? Or should I just slap something up on Tumblr? I'm willing to do anything (moral) over the next 4 weeks to put myself into a position to maximize my income, and I'm open to all and every idea Programmers users may have. Let me hear them.

• Logitech MX3200 keyboard stopped working

  I have a Logitech MX3200 wireless keyboard and mouse set, and keyboard stopped working. I was working with it and it just stopped in the middle of using it. Some notes: The mouse still works flawlessly, i've tried to reconnect the KB i've tried to reconnect everything, mouse reconnects, keyboard reconnects (or pretends to) I've tried to hard reset (holding the connect button on the receiver for 10 seconds). I've tried new batteries I took out the batteries out of the KB & Mouse and unplugged the receiver over night. The media keys still work (launches winamp) but they main keys does not At this point, i've tried everything I've seen online. I just want to know is my keyboard dead in the water? I would say it's been about 8 months to a year since i've bought it, and the articles i find on the internet all say that's as long as they last... is this true? what's everyone's experience? I hope it's not true.

• How to handle the different frame rate on different devices?

  I am not quite sure how frame per second works on a web page. I have a Canvas game that involves in moving an image from point A to B, and measuring the time elapsed. The code can be as simple as: var timeStamp = Date.now(); function update(){ obj.y += obj.speed; text = "Time: "+ (Date.now() - timeStamp) + "ms"; } The function update() is called every frame. The problem is that the time elapsed is different from device to device. It is pretty short on my PC, but get longer on my iPad, and is much longer on my cell phone. I thought it is because the FPS is smaller on mobile devices, so instead of calling update() every frame, I call it every 1ms by using a setInterval. But this does not solve the problem. In my understanding, the function for setInterval is invoked based on the increment in system time, other than frame rate, so it should fix the problem. Am I missing anything here? If the setInterval function is called based on FPS, is there any way to get around with the FPS difference across devices? On a side note, I have sort of a "water simulator" on the same canvas. It involves in redrawing about 60 objects which can be 600x600 pixels for every frame, so it could be a frame rate killer. I am using Phaser.js but not really using much of its functionalities, if that helps.

• Auto backup a user folder to a usb when usb is plugged in

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into. • Virtualized Development Server for simulating 3-Tier Environment

  Hello, I am thinking about buying a new server based development box for development (redundantly redundant, I know ;)). Ideally, I want to run something like ESXi or Xen Hypervisor at the lowest level. Then I want to add (at least) 5 Linux VM's for the following uses: 2 Web Servers 2 Application Servers 1 Database Server I want to load balance the 2 web servers and the 2 application servers and (somewhat obviously) they need to be all networked together to simulate a production environment. Also, it used to be the case that the recommendation was to put each VM on it's own hard drive, but I'm not sure that holds water anymore. Any advice? Does anyone have any advice on how to pull this off? Gotchya's, LookOuts!, etc? Thanks!

• Thinking about open-sourcing quiz project [closed]

  I was thinking about starting an open source project. I have a few projects that might work ok as an open project but thought I might dip my toe into the water with a simple quiz project. The idea is you can add questions to a quiz, arrange questions by topic, difficulty or location. Users would hopefully get an interesting quiz, tuned to their ability. At the end they'd get a score and hopefully they might provide either some feedback on the questions or even supply a few questions of their own. I couldn't see a similar project (fame's last words). I have a basic version of the project that gives the user a bunch of questions to answer in 10 minutes. It doesn't currently group the questions into topics, and no feedback is taken. I've also been told the graphical questions don't work on Ipads for some reason. Would this be a suitable project to go open source? I did find various quiz's out there but all seemed rather narrowly focused. I really wanted something that could cover any type of question on any type of subject. I prefer to keep the questions in MySQL but I could see how this might make it more difficult for others to get on board - should I move to data files? • How can you easily determine the textureRect for tiled maps in SFML 2.0?

  I'm working on creating a 2d map prototype, and I've come across the rendering bit of it. I have a tilesheet with tiles, each tile is 30x30 pixels, and there's a 1px border to delimitate them. In SFML the usual method of drawing a part of a tilesheet is declaring an IntRect with the rectangle coordinates then calling the setTextureRectangle() method to a sprite. In a small game it would work, but I have well over 45 tiles and adding more every day, I can't declare 45 intRects for every material, the map is not optimized yet, it would get even worse if I would have to call the setTextureRect() method, aside from declaring 45 rectangleInts. How could I simplify this task? All I need is a very simple and flexible solution for extracting a region of the tilesheet. Basically I have a Tile class. I create multiple instances of tiles (vectors) and each tile has a position and a material. I parse a map file and as I parse it I set the materials of the map according to the parsed map file, and all I need to do is render. • Automatize uploading the YouTube

  Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. I was thinking that perhaps I could upload the videos to Youtube with the privacy set to invite only and then delete the video from the hard drive automatically. Could this be done?

• repairing or retrieving video off a cracked disk

  My disk has a thin cracked right through the one side. right around the crack it looks like it has water damage but im pretty sure it was caused from the crack. will tape work for this? its a dvd of us in jamaica swimming with dolphins and i havent even watched it yet, it got ruined in my suitcase. If there is no way to repair it, is there somewhere that i can take it so they might be able to somehow get the video off of it and onto another disk? any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

• Getting Server 2008 R2 to ignore all traffic from Internet-facing NIC, leaving it to a VM

  I got in to Server 2008 R2 via Dreamspark and would like to start learning on it. I don't have much option but to put it on a system sitting between the Internet and my home LAN due to electricity bills and the fact that 3 computers in an 11x11 space in 102 degree weather is pretty stygian. Currently I use a ClearOS gateway to manage everything, what I'd like to do is take my server 2008 R2 box, which has two NICs, and drop it at the head of my network. I'd want Server 2008 R2 to ignore all traffic on the external facing NIC and pass it to a virtual ClearOS gateway, and to put all its Internet traffic through its other NIC - which will face the rest of my network and be the default gateway for it. The theory is to keep the potentially vulnerable Server 2008 R2 install as tucked behind a Linux box as possible, without sacrificing too much performance. This is a home network that occasionally hosts dedicated game servers and voice chat servers, so most malicious activity is in the form of drive by non-targeted attacks, however, I don't trust Windows Server because I don't know the OS well enough, yet. So, three questions: How do I do this, am I going to be reasonably more secure doing this than if I just let the Server 2008 R2 rig handle all the network traffic and DHCP (not an option), and should I virtualize the Server 2008 R2 rig instead and if so in what? (Core 2 Duo e6600 w/ 5 gigs usable RAM)

• Performance of Virtual machines on very low end machines

  I am managing a few cheap servers as my user base isn't large enough to get much more powerful servers. I also don't have the money lying around to invest in a server to prepare for the larger user base. So I'm stuck with the old hardware I have. I am toying with the idea of virtualizing all the current OS's with most likely VMware vSphere Hypervisor (AKA ESXi) Xen (ESXi has too strict of an HCL, and my hardware is too old). Big reasons for doing so: Ability to upgrade and scale hardware rapidly - This is most likely what I'll be doing as I distribute services, get a bigger server, centralize (electricity bills are horrible), distribute, get a bigger server, etc... Manually doing this by reinstalling the entire OS would be a big pain Safety from me - I've made many rookie mistakes, like doing lots of risky work on a vital production server. With a VM I can just backup the state, work on my machine, test, and revert if necessary. No worries, and no OS reinstallation Safety from other factors - As I scale servers might go down, and a backup VM can instantly be started. Various other reasons. However the limiting factor here is hardware. And I mean very depressing hardware. The current server's run off of a Pentium 3 and 4, and have 512 MB and 768 MB RAM respectively (RAM can be upgraded soon however). Is the Virtualization layer small enough to run itself and a Linux OS effectively? Will performance be acceptable (50% CPU overhead for every operation isn't acceptable)? Does it leave enough RAM for the Linux OS? Is this even feasible?

• What are some techniques to monitor multiple instances of a piece of software?

  It was recommended that I ask this question here by a member of StackOverflow. I have a piece of self-serve kiosk software that will be running at multiple sites. I'd like to monitor their status remotely. The kiosk application itself is pretty much finished. I am now in the process of creating a piece of software that will monitor all of the kiosks from a central location so that the customer can view particular details remotely (for instance, how many bills are in the acceptor's cash cartridge, what customer is currently logged in, etc.). Because I am in such an early stage of development, my options are quite open. I understand that I'm not giving very many qualifications, but I'd like to try to get a good variety of potential solutions. Some details: Kiosk software is a VB6 app running on Windows Embedded Monitoring software will be run on a modern desktop version of Windows (either XP, Vista, or 7) Database is SQL Server 2008 My initial idea was to develop a .NET app that would simply report the last database transaction for each kiosk at a set interval (say every second or so) but I'd really like for the kiosk software to report its status in real-time. I'm not exactly sure where to begin in terms of what modifications may need to be made to the kiosk software, and what the monitoring software will require. Links to articles on these topics would be most welcome.

• I receive email not addressed to me - virus?

  Every once in a while I receive email (on Gmail) that isn't addressed to me. Gmail puts it in the spam box, because it 'can't verify that it has been sent by [sender]'. The emails, when opened, contain confidential information about deliveries and paid bills (it does look an awful lot like 'real' mail from well-known companies, and it doesn't look like a scam, since the mail is informative - they give information instead of asking for credit card numbers ;-)), and I even got an email from "Facebook" that I requested a password change and that I have to 'click here' to change the password for [email address that isn't mine]. I am not the only addressee, there seems to be a whole list of Gmail addresses beginning with 'a'. The original addressee obviously has some sort of virus, and now I wonder if this could be a risk for me too. Is my email being sent around without my knowing too? I am not the kind of person who randomly clicks on shady links - I am very careful on the internet - but maybe there are other ways of catching viruses? Is there something I should do/check? • Getting rid of your server in a small business environment

  In a small business environment, is it still necessary to have a central server? Speaking for my own company (a small charity with about 12 employees) we use our server (Windows Server 2003) for the following: Email via Microsoft Exchange Central storage Acting as a print server User authentication / Active Directory There are significant costs associated with running a server like this: Electricity, first for the server itself then for the air conditioning required (this thing pumps out a lot of heat) Noise (of which there is a lot) IT support bills (both Windows Server and Exchange are pretty complicated, and there are many ways they can go wrong) I've found ways to replace many of these functions with cheaper (better?) alternatives: Google Apps / GMail is a clear win for us: we have so many spam related problems it's not even funny, and Outlook is dog slow on our aging computers You can buy networked storage devices with built in print servers, such as the Netgear ReadyNAS™ RND4210 that would allow us to store/share all of our documents, and allow us to access printers over the network The only thing that I can't figure out how to do away with is the authentication side of things - it seems to me that if we got rid of our server, you'd essentially have a bunch of independent PCs that had no shared pool of user accounts / no central administrator. Is that right? Does that matter? Am I missing any other good reasons to keep a central server? Does anybody know of any good, cost-effective ways of achieving the same end but without the expensive central server?

  which computer to choose with Pentium processor hello they are getting rid of the old computer equipment in the office and i have to choose the computer to take home i get first choice to pick. -15 inch lcd screen 4 gb of ram core 2 duo dual Core E8400 3.00 GHz dvd writer windows vista/ linux -15 inch crt monitor with 2 gb ram and pentium 4 2 ghz single core HT technology windows xp hardisks both 250 GB my friend is telling me to choose the second one Pentium single core HT because he told me it runs faster becuase of HT technology and cooler and consumes less current electricity so it wont get overheated because it has HT technology so it's high definition for encoding and watching HD movies and HD sound and is like a gaming pc to play internet games. And also he said the dual core 8400 runs at 3 ghz compared to the 2 ghz so it heats very much because of the two extra cores so it takes more current raising electricty bills and is not good for gaming and watching HD movies and internet flash animations and games because of getting heated everytime. And he wants to choose and take the E8400 because he has air conditioning at home so it will be safe from heating. So which one computer should i take is it really faster because of the HT High definition technology and will i be able to play internet flash card games better and watch good HD movies Youtube etc and play all the music and songs.

  i need to study for mcitp, but i also need to study for sharepoint 2010 i have a poweredge 1850 with two single-core CPUs + two 73G drives - it kills me on electricity, so don't want to use it, and it won't do VT, but it could be one of three boxes for a lab that's cheap, but will cost a lot on electricity i was thinking . . . OPTION #1 Opteron 4170 HE (50 watt chip), 6-core, only two-bills ($200), but the board's are $250, so that's an $800 box, then get another box to dual-boot Win7/Hyper-V on the cheap...? OPTION #2 Used Quad - but how many VM's that are really banging away could it run at same time? (Server 2008r2, SQL 2008r2, Search Server) OPTION #3 Study from books and just get one box that can run two VM's at same time, even if slowly. the last time i had and used a home lab was five years ago when i had a DC, SQL, Exchange and business app box, that's where i got my server skills was just banging on it for four years, but didn't read any books, so now i have to get certified and know the material, and just am not sure how much attention i should pay to the box i use versus the studying time and reading. sorry it's a subjective question, and am obviously open to all sorts of abuse here, but hope you can tell me also how many VM's i can run at the same time given what they'll be doing (SQL and SharePoint FAST search server are resource hungry) thanks!

  Hallo erstmal, ich habe hier ein kleines Problem für das ich bis jetzt noch keine Lösung habe. Ich lebe in Bosnien und teile hier die Internetverbindung mit der Vermieterin, und wie es in Bosnien so ist haben wir keine Flatrate, sondern eine 15 Giga traffic limite. Das wäre eigentlich mehr als genug, wenn der Sohn der Vermieterin nicht immer überziehen würde, sodass die Rechnungen immer ziemlich teuer ausfallen. Ich habe ihm bereits ein Messprogramm installiert, aber das schaltet er offensichtlich aus sobald er in die Nähe seiner Limite kommt und behauptet dann die Limite nicht überzogen zu haben. Ich brauche also mindestens ein Messprogramm das Passwortgeschützt ist und/oder im Log Zeiten vermerkt wärend denen es nicht eingeschaltet war. Noch besser wäre ein Programm das ihm den Netzzugriff einfach abklemmt wenn er seinen Anteil überschreitet, also eine Mischung aus Trafic-meter und Parental Guard. Kann mir da jemand weiterhelfen? • memory not freed in matlab?

  I am running a script that animates a plot (simulation of a water flow). After a while, I kill the loop by doing ctrl-c. After doing this several times I get the error: ??? Error: Out of memory. And after I start receiving that error, every call to my script will generate it. Now, it happens before anything inside the function that I am calling is executed, i.e even if I add the line a=1 as the first line of the function I am calling, I still get the error and no printout, so the code inside the function doesn't even get executed. What could be causing this?
