  • How many threads should an Android game use?

    At minimum, an OpenGL Android game has a UI thread and a Renderer thread created by GLSurfaceView. Renderer.onDrawFrame() should be doing a minimum of work to get the higest FPS. The physics, AI, etc. don't need to run every frame, so we can put those in another thread. Now we have: Renderer thread - Update animations and draw polys Game thread - Logic & periodic physics, AI, etc. updates UI thread - Android UI interaction only Since you don't ever want to block the UI thread, I run one more thread for the game logic. Maybe that's not necessary though? Is there ever a reason to run game logic in the renderer thread?

  • Linq to SQL NullReferenceException's: A random needle in a haystack!

    I'm getting NullReferenceExeceptions at seemly random times in my application and can't track down what could be causing the error. I'll do my best to describe the scenario and setup. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated! C# .net 3.5 Forms Application, but I use the WebFormRouting library built by Phil Haack (http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/11/using-routing-with-webforms.aspx) to leverage the Routing libraries of .net (usually used in conjunction with MVC) - intead of using url rewriting for my urls. My database has 60 tables. All Normalized. It's just a massive application. (SQL server 2008) All queries are built with Linq to SQL in code (no SP's). Each time a new instance of my data context is created. I use only one data context with all relationships defined in 4 relationship diagrams in SQL Server. the data context gets created a lot. I let the closing of the data context be handled automatically. I've heard arguments both sides about whether you should leave to be closed automatically or do it yourself. In this case I do it myself. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm creating a lot of instances of the data context or just one. For example, if I go to login-guest.php, I would put the default values for username and password and then have a jquery click event that automatically logs them in using $("#btn-login").trigger('click'); The problem is that the session controller automatically goes back to login.php if the session has timed out and I'm not sure how I could go about achieving this. But when I run the Development Mode, the styles are not applied! I tried many different approaches, but it still doesn't work. What I noticed, is that in the HTML, the VerticalPanel is given the class name obfuscated by GWT, but the CSS is not send to the browser - in fact, the GWT doesn't even ask for it. Am I missing something?

Any Idea why?

I have written a custom search page that provides faster, more user friendly searches than the default Contacts view and also allows searching of Leads and Contacts simultaneously. It uses GridViews bound to SqlDataSources that query filtered views. I'm sure someone will complain that I'm not using the web services for this, but this is just the design decision we made. These GridViews live in UpdatePanels to enable very slick AJAX updates upon search. It's all working great. Unfortunately it seems CRM's IIS configuration has the magic ability to capture this error before it ever gets back to my code. Using the debugger I never see it. It never gets to my catch blocks, but it's clearly happening in the SQL Data Source which is clearly (by the stack trace) being triggered by my GridView bind. Any ideas on this?     I'm trying to implement a calculator web service on GAE using Java Restlets... it works perfectly fine on localhost but when I upload my project to the Google App Engine everytime I try the web service link it says the link is broken.     I'm a Zend Framework newbie, and I'm trying to work out how to add another route to my application.ini file. I currently have my routes set up as follows: resources.router.routes.artists.route = /artists/:stub resources.router.routes.artists.defaults.controller = artists resources.router.routes.artists.defaults.action = display ...so that /artists/joe-bloggs uses the "display" action of the "artists" controller to dipslay the profile the artist in question - that works fine. What I want to do now is to set up another route so that /artists/joe-bloggs/random-gallery-name goes to the "galleries" action of the "artists" controller. I tried adding an additional block to the application.ini file (beneath the block above) like so: resources.router.routes.artists.route = /artists/:stub/:gallery resources.router.routes.artists.defaults.controller = artists resources.router.routes.artists.defaults.action = galleries ...but when I do that the page at /artists/joe-bloggs no longer works (Zend tries to route it to the "joe-bloggs" controller). How do I set up the routes in application.ini so that I can change the action of the "artists" controller depending on whether "/:gallery" exists? I realise I'm probably making a really stupid mistake, so please point out my stupidity and set me on the right path (no pun intended).

    Hello, I am working on a one page website that allows the users to add and remove pages from there navigation as and when they would like too, the way it works is that if the click 'Blog' on the main nav a 'Blog' section should appear on the page, if they then click 'News' the 'News' section should also be visible, however the way I have started to implement this it seems I can only have one section at a time, can my code be adpated to allow multiple sections to shown on the main page.     I have an Acer laptop with Atheros AR928X wireless card installed, supported by ath9k driver in the linux kernel. There are other 5 computers sharing wireless connection via a TPLink 150Mbit/s wireless router. At first I found the network is a little bit slower than it's in Windows7, which I accepted as it should be. However a very strange thing is, each time I connected to the router and downloaded stuff for a while, one of the computers running Windows7 in my local network dropped off from the router. And if I run my laptop under Windows7, everything is fine. What's even stranger is although the network becomes slower, only the certain computer drops and totally freezes in connection with the router. I'm not willing to conclude it's due to the unhealthy connection from my laptop to the router, however we have confirmed this for more than one times and there is no problem with the network when I'm running WIndows7. I'm extremely confused about what's going on. As a Linux user running Ubuntu over 5 years, I am awared that wireless driver in Linux is badly notorious of lack of stability and slow speed. But is it so bad that the unhealthy wireless connection can do damage to another computer in the same local network? I do see a lot of "Tx excessive retries" in iwconfig output. But how exactly does this happen ? Thanks for your help.   • What does path finding in internet routing do and how is it different from A*?

    Note: If you don't understand this question then feel free to ask clarification in the comments instead of voting down, it might be that this question needs some more work at the moment. I've been directed here from the Stack Excange chat room Root Access because my question didn't fit on Super User. In many aspects path finding algorithms like A star are very similar to internet routing. For example: A node in an A* path finding system can search for a path though edges between other nodes. A router that's part of the internet can search for a route though cables between other routers. In the case of A*, open and closed lists are kept by the system as a whole, sepratly from any individual node as well as each node being able to temporarily store a state involving several numbers. Routers on the internet seem to have remarkable properties, as I understand it: They are very performant. New nodes can be added at any time that use a free address from a finite (not tree like) address space. It's real routing, like A*, there's never any doubling back for example. Similar IP addresses don't have to be geographically nearby. The network reacts quickly to changes to the networks shape, for example if a line is down. Routers share information and it takes time for new IP's to be registered everywhere, but presumably every router doesn't have to store a list of all the addresses each of it's directions leads most directly to. I'm looking for a basic, general, high level description of the algorithms workings from the point of view of an individual router. Does anyone have one? I presume public internet routers don't use A* as the overheads would be to large, and scale to poorly. I also presume there is a single method worldwide because it seems as if must involve a lot of transferring data to update and communicate a reasonable amount of state between neighboring routers. For example, perhaps the amount of data that needs to be stored in each router scales logarithmically with the number of routers that exist worldwide, the detail and reliability of the routing is reduced over increasing distances, there is increasing backtracking involved in parts of the network that are less geographically uniform or maybe each router really does perform an A* style search, temporarily maintaining open and closed lists when a packet arrives.
