  • How can I setup BluePill to Monitor a Rails App Running via Passenger (mod_rails)

    I recently launched a site running phusion passenger. Unfortunately, the site went down due to a frozen thread. I was able to save the server by doing kill -9 to the specific PID. Still though, I thought passenger was able to manage this automatically. I have a server with 1GB of memory running one rails app with passenger allotted up to 7 instances. However, when I came to discover the site went down I found that passenger had spawned 6 instances with one of them using up over 800mb of memory causing the server to swap. As a result I am hoping to setup something like bluepill on the server but I'm slightly confused as to how you go about doing it. Mainly because bluepill expects to start/stop the processes it's monitoring. However, in our case, passenger already restarts processes for us so we only need to monitor the pids of passengers instances and kill them once they've gotten too large. Has anyone here setup BluePill to monitor a rails app running under phusion's passenger? Any insight would be useful.

    Before asking question let me tell you some assumptions here there are 5 files on my webserver index.php config.php read.php write.php .htaccess I've wrote following URL rewriting rule in .htaccess RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^(\w+)$ read.php?id=$1 Now when I type domain.com/xyz it fetch data from read.php?id=xyz thats nice :) But when I type domain.com/index it fetch data from index.php or when i type domain.com/write or domain.com/config or domain.com/read it fetch data from write.php , config.php and read.php respectively I want data to be fectched from read.php?id=index or read.php?id=config or read.php?id=read or read.php?id=write Any one can help me regarding this ?   • How to deal with 100's or 1000's of virtual hosts

    I am curious to know how services such as heroku manage 1000's of virtual hosts - ie if you create a web site/app, and put it up on these services, you get your own virtual host name - foo.heroku.com etc (the same applies to many other sites that have vanity URLs). I know with various web servers and proxies you can configure as many virtual hosts as you want - but there must be some upper limit to this ? Do they programmatically add virtual hosts - perhaps spreading the load? Or are there other solutions.

  • OSX 10.6 Give Apache2 read&write access to mounted windows share

    On Mac OS X Snow Leopard I'm trying to give the apache2 user _www full rights to a mounted hidden windows server share. I've used Connect to Server with smb://servername/share$ and saved the username/password in the keychain. The domain username used for the mount got full rights to the share on the windows server. It all works this far. I can browse and edit the files in the share from the Mac. However I can't find a way to give the apache2 user _www rights to write to the mounted share. I have a perl script that is supposed to create a file in the mounted folder but only get permission denied. I've tried all kinds of chmod and chown but it doesn't change the permissions of the share. Does anyone know how this can be done please?

  • Allow certain users to access a specific directory?

    I'm trying to figure out how to allow certain users who are also me to access a directory of files that I want to use for all of my users. I'm using cPanel and I used WHM to create three separate accounts. The files I want to use are on account1 in the directory /home/account1/public_html/source/engines and I want the directory /home/account2/public_html/source/engines to use the same exact files without having to upload them to both places every time I change them, so I created a simple symbolic link and added account2 to the group account1 (while still keeping its own group as the primary). It still gives me a Permission Denied error though. Is there any way I can grant account2 and other accounts that I create for myself access to those files? I don't want them to be global to all users because I don't want my hosted users to be able to access them, only my users. groups account1 returns account1 : account1 groups account2 returns account2 : account2 account1 /home/account1/public_html/source/engines and all its files belongs to account1:account1 Any other information you might need just ask.

    Let's say I have a domain, www.mydomain.com. And I ordered a new domain, abc.newdomain.com. Both domains are hosted in the same ISP, so currently requests to either of those addresses result in the same page being shown. I want to redirect all requests to abc.newdomain.com to folder /wp so that when users access abc.newdomain.com they would see whatever is inside folder /wp without seeing the URL change. Questions: How can I achieve this using .htaccess? How can I prevent users from accessing directly /wp directory (meaning that www.mydomain.com/wp would be blocked)?

  • Why can't I get rid of default index.html even if I disable the default virtual host in Apache2?

    I have created a virtual host settings file and I disabled the default settings by using a2dissite default (this is a pretty standard Ubuntu 10.04 installation). But no matter what I try my Apache2 server simply keeps on displaying the default index.html page instead of the index.php page that I set up in the virtual host file. Can someone help me what I'm missing.     I was wondering what a rewrite statement that looks for this situation. I want to have multiple users on my server. Each user can have 'VirtualDocumentRoot' like sites in his directory. For example, they just make a directory like 'example.com' in their home directory, and it's hosted. The problem is I don't know if VirtualDocumentRoot can do this, or if it would take a rewrite rule that looks in all the users folders for a domain. Can anybody help me?

  • Running multiple sites on a LAMP with secure isolation

    Hi everybody, I have been administering a few LAMP servers with 2-5 sites on each of them. These are basically owned by the same user/client so there are no security issues except from attacks through vulnerable deamons or scripts. I am builing my own server and would like to start hosting multiple sites. My first concern is... ISOLATION. How can I avoid that a c99 script could deface all the virtual hosts? Also, should I prevent that c99 to be able to write/read the other sites' directories? (It is easy to "cat" a config.php from another site and then get into the mysql database) My server is a VPS with 512M burstable to 1G. Among the free hosting managers, is there any small one which works for my VPS? (which maybe is compatible with the security approach I would like to have) Currently I am not planning to host over 10 sites but I would not accept that a client/hacker could navigate into unwanted directories or, worse, run malicious scripts. FTP management would be fine. I don't want to complicate things with SSH isolation. What is the best practice in this case? Basically, what do hosting companies do to sleep well? :) Thanks very much!     I've apache2 server installed on a machine that connected to two different networks, therefore it has two different addresses: 192.168.1.111 (static ip on ethernet network) and 109.253.78.211. when connecting through 109.253.78.211 on the browser, the web pages are displayed perfectly, However, when connecting through 109.253.78.211 the web pages are displayed partially. I've not installed any firewalls. I'll really appreciate if you could redirect me to checks I should commit to reach the source of the problem. Thank you :)

  • Accessing webserver behind cheap router

    I have a trendNET wireless/wired router, and inside the LAN I have a webserver on 192.168.10.103:80. Does anyone know how I can access the webserver from outside the LAN? I setup a "VirtualSever" to portforward publicIP:8080 to 192.168.10.103:80, but it never loads. Port scanning the external IP shows the port as "filtered" on the router, and from the inside, it shows 192.168.10.103:80 as open. Does anyone know how I can make this work?
