• How to install vmware in Ubuntu 10.04

  I need to install minix3 in vmware. I m using ubuntu 10.04. i downlaoded vmware and now i am trying to install it using:-- sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` chmod +x VMware-Player*.bundle gksudo bash ./VMware-Player*.bundle VM Player Installer window popped up Clicked on the ‘Install’ button The progress bar started going; above the bar, it says that the installer is ‘Configuring’ This is was more than 15 minutes ago and still going. Nothing else is running on the system (consuming CPU, mem, …) Is the ‘Configuring’ step supposed to take this long? Seems to me it might be hung. Question: Did i do something wrong? Is there a log some place that can help me to debug this?

  I am going to install a new SQL server 2008 instance on my development/testing machine. My machine have one 7200rpm 500GB SATA Disk (C:OS) and one Intel X25-G2 80GB SSD(D:). Details machine config is as follow: CPU:i7 860 RAM:8GB Microsoft said I have an option to place following directories in different disk. So I plan to place User database & Temp DB on SSD and rest of it on traditional disk. Is it a good choice for gaining a performance boost in fast SSD? • Is there any way to use the xscreensaver gltext to monitor system information?

  I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command: $ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`" and get a gltext window showing: temperature: 60 C I can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do. I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started. Is it possible to do what I want, which is change the text every 60 seconds if the temperature changes?

• Slowdown after repeated hibernation in XP SP3

  I have a Dell laptop w/dual core and 4 gigs of memory. Recently my machine has started to go off in never never land for 5 to 20 minutes at a time with a lot of hard drive churning. Eventually it comes back and everything operates properly. If I manage to have task manager up CPU usage shows no more then 3 to 5% during this process. I am on a corporate network and have very good virus protection in place. The problem seems to have increased in frequency since I let an update happen to IE8 and/or I started using hibernate more frequently. Any ideas or suggestions? TIA J

• baffling stat pauses - (reiserfs)

  I've got a SuSE server with reiserfs formatted partitions, all on a RAID1 mirror. I'm noticing odd spikes in iowait, but generally all seems okay. iostat claims not even 3% iowait in general: avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 6.53 0.03 1.45 2.92 0.00 89.07 After tracking down some odd behaviour when ls'ing, it appears "stat" (ls is aliased to include color which does a stat process on each file) randomly takes 5 seconds on a file in the directory. ReiserFS does a file system sync every 5 seconds, but that's interval between not length of time taken to sync. Out of curiosity I did remount using noatime to see if that would help though as it would reduce sync's workload, but no joy. Anyone got any thoughts what might be causing this pause? Disks appear healthy, RAID controller believes the RAID is healthy, and io stats show the disks aren't working very hard at all.

This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!

• Remote monitoring with screen capture

  Is there anyway i can perodically take screenshots of a remote computer using nagios? I am experimenting with Nagios, and i am trying to explore different monitoring. So my question is apart from using nagios to monitor cpu usage, bandwidth utilization, uptime etc.. can i monitor my worker's productivity by checking what is he doing on his computer in a form of image output. Being able to monitor processes would not be of much help to me, as i only know if he or she is running firefox.exe for example he maybe using excessive use of firefox for facebook or other stuff but he claims he is troubleshooting and looking for solutions on forums. I saw a check_vnc script but i am unable to install the requsite vnc server anyone succesfully tried the vnc script care to share how to go about it? If not anyother way to try this?

• What metric captures why my OSX machine is so slow during XCode indexing

  My entire machine OSX Lion machine slows down while XCode 4.4 is indexing. The CPU is less than 10% busy, I've got over 500 MB free memory, plenty of disk space, disk IO rate is not high, network activity is not high. Indexing just a few files can take minutes and builds are extremely slow. While this is going on, even loading a new web page in Chrome can be slow. Knowing how to fix it would be great, but more fundamentally how can I measure what is actually going slowly? What metrics should I be looking at? Nothing in Activity Monitor, iostat, top, or sar betray anything about what's going on to me. Even getting a man page is interminable.

• Slight network lag on Small Business Server 2008 R2

  I recently upgraded a network from a SBS 2003 server to a SBS 2008 R2 Server. Both I and users have noticed a slight delay in network applications and browsing network drives on the new server. It is minor, maybe a second or two at most. However I am wondering if anyone knows of anyway to optimize the networking to service requests sooner to the workstations. The network is running a 1 gig network with some 100 meg devices (mainly network printers). All workstations are XP SP3 Network software runs out of a shared folder mapped as a network drive, no sql databases. Server is a Dell Poweredge T610 with plenty of ram, cpu power, and storage.

• Monitoring and terminating a hanged process in Linux

  Hi, I'm writing a script that runs many simultaneous processes that run the "dig" command. Once in a while (relatively rare, but happens in every run since I run dig many times) the dig command hangs with 0% CPU. Therefore, my script never terminates. I've created a monitor process for each dig command I run, which terminates it after a while, but I was wondering if there isn't a simpler and more efficient way to run a process with a pre-determined "expiration date", i.e. if the process runs more then X seconds it gets a signal that terminates it. • LM Sensors always returning same (invalid) value for one temp sensor

  I am trying to monitor the temp sensors on a server, and plot them using Cacti. I have lm-sensors installed and working correctly. For example, here is the output from sensors: % sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +26.8 C (crit = +100.0 C) temp2: +32.0 C (crit = +60.0 C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +36.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) coretemp-isa-0001 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 1: +42.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) However, when I try to get this data via SNMP, I get only one sensor's temperature correctly, and another one always returns 100.000 C: % snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 10.8.0.18 -m ALL lmTempSensors lmTempSensorsIndex.1 = INTEGER: 0 lmTempSensorsIndex.2 = INTEGER: 1 lmTempSensorsDevice.1 = STRING: temp1 lmTempSensorsDevice.2 = STRING: temp1 lmTempSensorsValue.1 = Gauge32: 26800 lmTempSensorsValue.2 = Gauge32: 100000 So, my question is two-fold: Why is the second sensor that is returned by SNMP giving a value of 100 C (when it should be 32 C) Why are my CPU core sensors not being returned by SNMP?

• AMD chipset VS SLi

  Hello, I currently own a Crosshair 2 Formula which is broken and I need to replace. Recently, I bought a Phenom 2 CPU which I wouldn't like to throw away. Recent Crosshairs are based (as opposed to the Rampage series) on chipsets that are certified for AMD Crossfire. The problem is that I have 3 SLi cards I absolutely don't want to change with AMD card(s) since I use 3D Vision, and I need NVidia. If I buy a Crosshair 3 or 4 which is not SLi certified, will SLi still work? Else, could you suggest me a good gaming motherboard with AM3 socket and that works with 3-way SLi? Thank you in advance. My present (pseudo)code with malloc: Scenario 1 int main() { allocate large arrays with malloc INITIALIZE ALL ARRAY ELEMENTS TO ZERO for loop //say 1000 times do something and write results to arrays end for loop FREE ARRAYS with free command } //end main If I use calloc instead of malloc, then I'll have: Scenario2 int main() { for loop //say 1000 times ALLOCATION OF ARRAYS WITH CALLOC do something and write results to arrays FREE ARRAYS with free command end for loop } //end main I have three questions: Which of the scenarios is more efficient if the arrays are very large? Which of the scenarios will be more time efficient if the arrays are very large? In both scenarios,I'm just writing to arrays in the sense that for any given iteration in the for loop, I'm writing each array sequentially from the first element to the last element. The important question: If I'm using malloc as in scenario 1, then is it necessary that I initialize the elements to zero? Say with malloc I have array z = [garbage1, garbage2, garbage 3]. For each iteration, I'm writing elements sequentially i.e. in the first iteration I get z =[some_result, garbage2, garbage3], in the second iteration I get in the first iteration I get z =[some_result, another_result, garbage3] and so on, then do I need specifically to initialize my arrays after malloc?

• serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

  After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server. • Can I monitor active user count on my iis sites?

  We are having problems with performance on our server that host our websites that the processor gets upp to 90%. I would like to monitor the amount of users active on your sites that are published on the iis. My question, is this possible? is there any software for this? EDIT current (like this second) visitor count on all the active websites on our iis REASON FOR THIS if i can get the visitor amount on the days the CPU is not overloaded and and compare it to the days it is then i atleast know that this CAN be a reason why this is happening and i can take it from there. Otherwise i can focus on the code on the sites, or maybe google crawler is causing this, there are manythings that can cause this you know? for me this is just a simple way of troubleshooting.

  When copying large files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12-15MB/s on drives using the NTFS filesystem. I tested multiple drives (all connected using SATA) which all got writespeeds of 100MB/s+ on Windows or when formatted with ext4, so it's not an alignment or drive issue. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. AMD dual core processor (2.2 GHz) Kernel version: 3.5.0-23-generic Ubuntu 12.04 ntfs-3g version: both 2012.1.15AR.1 (Ubuntu default version) and 2013.1.13AR.2 How can I fix the writespeed?

• How to diagnose very slow pagefile

  Quite often, one of the applications I use freezes (“does not respond”) for a while, in extreme cases for few minutes. This happens especially when when switching apps. During this time, the HDD light flashes constantly and perfmon show that HDD is used 100% of the time (OTOH, CPU isn't) and that pagefile is being read (which is to be expected when switching apps), but at a very slow rate. When I sort the disk table in perfmon by read or write, the file read and wrote the most is the pagefile, but it's still quite low rate (I don't remember the numbers). How can I diagnose what's causing this? I use Windows Vista, and the computer is quite ordinary two years old laptop.

• RAID P410i and P812 performance issues

  I'm having much trouble with I/O performance of HP DL360 server with two RAID controllers - P410i and P812, Windows Server 2008, 36 GiB RAM and 16 x Intel Xeon x5550. The server runs a bunch of tasks producing heavy sequential I/O, and after about 20-30 minutes of intensive work it looks like the tasks are stuck, not using CPU and with enough free memory (so this cannot be a bottleneck). The same tasks were running quite well on the older server (Windows Server 2003, 4 x Intel Xeon, 12 GiB RAM). RAID cache is present, write-cache battery is installed. Cache is configured as 25% readahead/75% writeback. The swap file resides on the logical disk served by P410i and other logical disks are on P812. Can someone tell me what can be the matter of this? Is this a hardware problem or misconfiguration?

• Post Error, Fixed/Removable Media Error

  Hi, I really do not know what I am missing here. I ordered parts for a new server. The board is an Intel s3420GP. From the diagnostic LEDs I get the error message: 0xB1h which corresponds to "Fixed Media: Disabling fixed media" and 0xB8h which corresponds to "Removable Media: Resetting removable media device." I can not for the life of me figure out what it is talking about. I have two identical motherboards and both gave the error message. I don't have a second CPU yet, so I can't test that. There are no beeps or anything. It seems the server resets every 10 seconds or so (the speaker does work, I put the RAM in the wrong slots on purpose to test this out, and the correct error POST code came up) Please help me, I'm not sure where else to turn or to ask

  How to get my information off my old hard drive to my new one So I wanna know can anyone help me Laptop stop working and have me a hard disk error I finally got it to boot up again after playing with it, and I tried to copy my stuff and it froze on me and hasn't booted since Bought another hard drive and ended up making an image of my friends computer but couldn't get my stuff off my old drive so I tried the freezer method now and I put it in for two hours and it didn't boot but I'm putting it back in for 12hrs So my end result is I just wanna get my drive up enough to create an image of my CPU to my new hard drive and is there another way I could do it if my hard drive won't boot!! But here's the kickers when I made the image of my friends computerized up loaded it to the new hard drive and I have my old hard drive plugged up to an USB enclosure so I need help.   As a geek I really like Atom CPUs but can't find a reason to buy one yet :( Although I was thinking about making my own DVR with NAS and media center functionality. Unfortunately, even today's Acer Revo, built on ION platform is not fast enough for streaming Full HD videos. So what do you think, will new two core CPU make it better, will it be able to show Full HD videos, store them to disk and transfer something over the network at the same time? Will it be able to scale videos from Hulu and YouTube to fullscreen?

  I developed a C# application that makes use of Congex vision library (VPro). My application is developed with Visual Studio 2008 Pro on a 32bit Windows PC with 3GB of RAM. During the startup of application I see that a large amount of memory is allocated. So far so good, but when I add many and many vision elaboration the memory allocation increases and a part of application (only Cognex OCX) stops working well. The rest of application stills to work (working threads, com on socket....) I did whatever I could to save memory, but when the memory allocated is about 700MB I begin to have the problems. A note on the documentation of Cognex library tells that /LARGEADDRESSWARE is not supported. Anyway I'm thinking to try the migration of my app on win64 but what do I have to do? Can I simply use a processor with 64bit and windows 64bit without recompiling my application that would remain a 32bit application to take advantage of 64bit ? Or I should recompile my application ? If I don't need to recompile my application, can I link it with 64bit Congnex library? If I have to recompile my application, is it possible to cross compile the application so that my develop suite is on a 32bit PC? Every help will be very appreciated!! Thank in advance

  I am looking for an instant messaging solution to facilitate communications between recovery vehicles in remote rural areas. All the vehicles have internet connections, but they are intermittent depending on location. Ideally we'd like something that has the following features: Offline messaging: messages sent to clients who are offline will be delivered when they next come online, regardless of whether the sender is still online or not. Lightweight: CPU cycles are limited on the machines in these vehicles. A bloated solution will be an issue. Client platform is primarily win32, but support for osx/linux/mobile devices would be a bonus. Non-chatty: Bandwidth is a precious commodity for us, so services which use a minimal amount are ideal. Fault tolerant: We see plenty of packetloss and high latency, so whatever we use needs to be able to function in trying network conditions. I'm not fussed if we use a hosted platform like gtalk/skype/msn/icq/whatever, and likewise I can run a server if need be. Suggestions would be appreciated!

• General video performance affected on Mac OSX 10.5 (PowerBook G4)

  Hi all, I'm quite new to Mac and I just got a PowerBook G4 for free. I installed OSX 10.5 on it and for the first two weeks, everything was going kinda smooth even if this is similar to a P3. I'm not expecting awsome video performance but at least be able to watch some videos from Youtube. Yesterday night, I installed Office 2008 for mac and this morning, even after a reboot, my computer is way much slower that I used to know. I watched a youtube video and the framerate was 1:1. I also noticed it on flash adds, it's way slower! Is there anything that I can do to increase video performance, see what's the process list running and taking more GPU or CPU, what's taking more ram and stuff like that?! What do you guys, Mac pros, would do on an old laptop with OSX 10.5 Thanks!
