• unable to kill process / logout on windows server 2003

  My own console .net application stuck in a "ghost" stage. It just shows a window that i can't close. It doesn't show up as a process in the task manager. when i try to "find windows process" using Process Explorer (from sysinternals) it says there is no process that owns that window or something like that. The problem is that it doesn't allow me to logout or reboot the server (remotely) because logoff process keeps waiting on that window to close. shutdown /r /f also is stuck waiting for it. I can probably have somebody go an reboot the server but i'd like to know if there is a way to close that process, close that session or force logout remotely. This is windows server 2003, but i had the same issue on XP just a few days ago.

• Routing based on source address in Windows Server 2008 R2

  I'm implementing a direct routing load balanced solution using Windows Server 2008 R2 as back-end server. I've configured a loopback interface with the external IP address. This works, I am receiving packets with the external IP address and respond to them appropriately. However our infrastructure requires that traffic which is being load-balanced should go through a different gateway then any other traffic originating from the server, ie. updates etc. So basicly I need to route packets based on source address (external IP) to another gateway. The built-in Windows 'route' command allows routing based on destination address only. I've tried setting a default gateway on the loopback interface and mangled with weak/strong host send/receive parameters on the interfaces, however this didn't work. Is there any way around this, possibly using third party tools?

  Hi Guys, I'm new to linux server. I'm currently trying to get an Ubuntu 10.10 server up and running for the first time and I'm using Webmin for administration. I'm stuck on the setting up the firewall. What I need to do is to ONLY allow a range of IPs (e.g 128.171.21.1 - 128.171.21.100) to access the HTTP server and Webmin. I've seen a lot of tutorials but none of them fits what I needed. Thanks in advance!

  I've got a Windows Server 08 box on SP1 that is having some problems. We've experienced backup problems and I've traced it down to VSS Writers not responding. From the command line, if I type vssadmin list providers, I get Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' Provider type: System Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} Version: 1.0.0.7 If I type vssadmin list writers, I get this vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Waiting for responses. These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared. I could wait this out for hours and it won't move. I looked up how Server 2008 handles VSS writers, and you can't reregister them like you could in Server 2003 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/062cc52c-899b-45f3-8d0c-798b92363f41 Does anyone know how to fix something like this or where to turn next?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 and OSX 10.5/.6/.7

  I'm handling a migration from a on old mac server to a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running a 12TB(10 usable) RAID5 server. It's using an SMB share and now the OSX 10.5/.6 users can search sometimes it works but takes up to 10 minutes. The OSX 10.7 machine seems to be fine. I've looked in the root of the shared drive for a .Spotlight-V100 file (ls -a) but it doesn't seem to be there. mdutil says indexing is on for that volume and I have cleared the index using mdutil -E /Volumes/MeSharedVolume numerous times. Any ideas?

• Logging on to server creates duplicate user profiles in Documents & Setting

  Windows Server 2003. I am having a problem with the creation of new user profiles when logging in remotely to a terminal server. The new user profile gets added under Documents & Settings as username.domainname. Deleting the new profile does not allow the original profile to be reverted to. Went logging on to the server again, it creates another new user profile. Nothing was changed in the Active Directory or security settings. How do I get the original profile to be used?

  Is there a way to view the number of dirty pages (cached file pages that need to still be written to disk) in Windows Server 2003? In Windows 7, for example, I can use Performance Monitor and use the "Dirty Pages" counter (one of the cache counters). This counter does not seem to be available in Server 2003. Also on Windows 7 (and other later systems), I can use Sysinternals RAMMap and effectively see the dirty pages on a file-by-file basis. Is there something similar for Server 2003?

  Having read the answers in this discussion, I still would like to come up with the same question: What should I buy to run Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5? I just have slightly different boundary conditions. We plan to serve video to ca. 1,000 users simultaneously. It will be live stream, so the server will receive the stream in HD (1280x720), cache it, reformat to various other resolutions and send it to users. OS of choice is Linux, but if you say it should MS-DOS, so it will be... What would be a decent server for this task?

  I want Fiddler and some other programs to run on startup, so it's there and running every time I bring up an instance of my test server on EC2. There's a few questions about running scripts on Startup with Task Scheduler, but this needs to work slightly differently. I have set this up to run on startup but when I RDP into the server I can see Fiddler is running in Task Manager (so I can't manually run a second instance of the program), but it's not viewable on the task bar? So I can't actually see the interface? Here's my setup: General Tab Running with highest privileges Run whether user is logged on or not Configure for Windows 2008 server R2 Triggers Tab At startup Others are obvious and defaults.. What am I doing wrong?

  At one of my client's sites I need to keep my users unauthorized devices off the wireless. They all know the SSID and Password because many of them have laptops that need the wireless. I'm running out of IP address's and we have sent out numerous emails asking them to stay off, but like most users they ignore IT's email. I'm currently running Server 2003 as the GC/DC (but have 2008 servers in place) and 2 Netgear WNAP320. I've seen several posts similar to what I'm looking for but they seem to deal with Linux. My question is how do I go about doing this without migrating (scheduled for the end of the year) to a new server and is it possible to do this within Server 2003? Thanks msindle

I developed an app using C# and SQL Server Express 2012 with a local database, my connection string is"Data Source=localhost ; Initial Catalog = scalnet ; Integrated Security=SSPI; Trusted_Connection=Yes"; Everything worked ok till the time I made a setup and tried to install my app in another computer. My first question is: - What version of SQL should I install is this machine? it should be as ligth as possible. - I tried to install SQL exprees 2012 but it gives me an error when I execute my app "A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a ..... (provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40 - Could not open a connection to SQL server." This probably should be a problem with the server configuration but I have no ideia how to solve this... The site is running in IIS at a Windows Server 2003 and the solution I came up it that I will Schedule a task that requests the home page every 5 minutes. I am sure that this way the site will stay alive almost all the time. I have downloaded Wget from Wget from Windows and I have installed it at my windows server 2003 but I don't know how to use it in order to ping the server but not download anything. Since I want to use this forever I don't want to save anything on the disk, can you provide me with the command that pings a web page but don't save anything on the disk?

  when the traffic for a website grows i dont think one apache server in a vps is the way to go. i would like to know more about how i then should set up the server side architecture. im not that much into hardware stuff (what kind of cables to use, different cpu architectures etc), but interested in the software architecture: what servers (apache, nginx, squid, varnish etc) to use and how they interact with each other one server in one machine? how many mysql servers. how many apache, nginx servers and so on. how the "machine court" looks like. are there any good books about this area?

  Afternoon. We have three identical terminal servers running Windows Server 2003 SP2, on these servers there are about 250 concurrent users logged on. We're running Roaming Profiles on a central server running Active Directory which cache the profiles locally on each terminal server as well. When one, and just that one, user tries to login she gets this error message (roughly translated from Swedish): "You could not be logged in becouse your principle could not be registered. Check that you're connected to the network or ask your administrator Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." Anyone have an idea about this? I'm stumped ... We have reached stage where our environment can not handle application resulting in JBoss shut down throwing out of memory errors and CPU reaching to 90% usage. I am looking methodology to calculate correct server sizing where I input TPS, max number of concurrent users, max CPU utilization etc.. to give me number of servers, RAM size, number of cores. I am expecting application to grow 10% annually. Load Balancer and Failover should also be taken in account while sizing.

• sql server: losing identity column on export/import

  Recently I started dealing with SQL Server, my previous experience was in MS-Access. When I'm doing an import/export of a db, from the server to my computer or even in the server, all column with primary key loose the key. Identity is set to false and even bit is not set to the default. How can I can I use an import/export job to make an exact copy of the db and its data? I don't want to have to perform a backup and restore every time I want the same db somewhere else, for another project, etc. I have read about "edit mapping" and the checkbox but that did not helped with the identity specification... and what about the primary key of the tables and the rest of the things?

  I have a Windows 2003 web server with a tree of folders that contains around 100GB of small images. I need to update the permissions on this folder to add a new user with access. I tried to do this by right clicking on the folder and adding the new user but the process never completed. I left it running for around an hour but it started to heavily impact the peformance of the server. Is there any other way to change these folder permissions without affecting server performance?   I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 with 48 GB of RAM; server has been running strong for quite some time. Recently our boot.ini was modified causing issues, most likely by our remote administrators. Now the server is only showing 14 GB of RAM. This has caused major performance issues for our end users. Our remote administrators have stated "we don't change the boot.ini settings(switches)". However, I know for a fact that all of the local administrators have not modified the switches (due to lack of permissions). The real question.. Is it possible to "audit" who has modified the boot.ini? If thats not possible, can the boot.ini be set via startup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is an ongoing issue that I would love to resolve.

  We're just purchasing a dedicated windows 2003 server (in fact I think it's a VPS) How do we actually go about installing software on to it? Simply searching for "installing PHP5 on windows server" just produces material about installing it as if one had access to the computer with a keyboard and mouse. Am I being thick? I've had experience managing a linux server before but that had everything pre-configured and we accessed it via Web Hosting Manager. I don't get the actual concept of connecting to a remote PC and...downloading files? If there's any good books available please point me in the right direction.

  Have an issue where onsite clients cannot resolve VPNusers. but VPN users can resolve onsite machines. example. USER! uses LAPTOP1 USER1 connects to VPN gets internal IP address of 10.243.0.200 USER1 pings SERVER1 - resolve to ip and gets reply USER1 RDP into SERVER1 (inside VPN) USER1 pings LAPTOP1 from SERVER1 resolves to ip address last assigned by DHCP (10.243.0.139) ping fails USER1 pings 10.243.0.200 from SERVER1 gets reply. Running Server 2012r2 It is a domain controller, DNS and VPN server. VPN is just configured with basic default settings. All VPN users have static IP setup in AD. Not sure where to go from here.

  I have this one server that just doesn't want to be on the internet It's a new server, a twinblade, the other twin works, but not this one. It can connect fine to everythign else in the LAN, but cannot go out on the net It can be reached by ICMP requests over the net (the nagios server can probe it, but not ping it for instance), but not TCP Everything seems fine both in firewall and machine, i get no issues. Anyone care to help me out where i can start looking, i'm seriously confused. edit: it can ping gateway and through the sonicwall site to site VPN, it\s also able to resolve DNS. the only thing it can`t do is reach anything outside of LAN/VPN

• SQL Server 2005 transactional replication break before a configured number of retries

  We have a SQL Server 2000 Standard database with some tables being replicated (continuous transactional replication) to dozens of SQL Server 2005 Express and MSDE computers. The step 2 of the replication agent job (Run agent) is configured by default to retry every 1 minute for 10 times if some problem ocurr. Because the client machines get shut down at night (they are POS machines), we changed the number of retries to 5760 (4 days), so replication would not be broken at night and would not need to be restarted manually. But the problem is that every other day we have at least one machine with broken replication, with this error: The process could not connect to Subscriber 'POS986'. NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (5760) without succeeding. The step failed. It seems that SQL Server is not respecting the number of retries or the interval between retries as we configured. PS: I have restarted the replication job after changing the number of retries from 10 to 5760.

  Hello, Is there any mail server that has a feature to download (POP3) emails from another mail server like Google Apps (Gmail for your own domain), store it and then allow to users to download (POP3/IMAP) emails to their own mail client like Outlook/Live Mail? So I want it to become like a "middle mail server". I hope you guys understand it.
