For the very first time, with SharePoint 2013, we will have apps from different vendors, talking to different domains live in the browser. Sound fun eh? Well, all is hunky dory until you consider that browsers don’t have concepts such as process isolation, encryption, obfuscation etc.. Stuff that we are so used to in operating systems that we don’t even think about it. Browsers have JavaScript, and broken HTML5 – it is not secure! In fact, in the current technology spectrum you cannot achieve anything other than laughable security at message level without involving a plugin or some sort of thick code like Java. • Where to contribute a Mozilla Persona example?

  I found out about Mozilla Persona today and fell in love with it completely. It really does feel like the future of account management. For the first time ever, I actually want to contribute to open source because I believe in this tech. I wrote a simple ASP.Net MVC3 demo web application showing how to login and logout users using Persona. I want devs in my language ecosystem to have a simple time learning about this by reading example code. • Test Driven Development Code Order

  I am developing my first project using test driven development. I am using Zend Framework and PHPUnit. Currently my project is at 100% code coverage but I am not sure I understand in what order I am supposed to write my code. Am I supposed to write my test FIRST with what my objects are expected to do or write my objects and then test them? Ive been working on completing a controller/model and then writing at test for it but I am not sure this is what TDD is about? Any advice? For example, I wrote my Auth plugin and my Auth controller and tested that they work properly in my browser, and then I sat down to write the tests for them, which proved that there were some logical errors in the code that did work in the browser.

• How much do they study in the best universities, relative to the other universities?

  In my university, our total required weekly attendance (for lectures and tutorials/similar) is about 12 hours. It was like that in the first year, and then everything required extremely little effort - I believe that if I invested as much efforts as someone who is studying for medicine or law, I could have learnt everything for 1-2 months - if not less! Now I'm second year and it doesn't look like it's going to be too different. This concerns me about the people who study in Oxford, Cambridge or Imperial College. It would be weird if they study that little, and it would be very concerning if they do study very hard, because this would mean that by the end of the year, their first year students will be better than our average third year student. Which is bad news for me, given that I share the market with them. I know the question can't have an absolutely accurate answer, but it can still be answered quite definitely, and it's relevant to many people.

• How to reinstall latest Ubuntu Touch on Nexus 4?

  I've followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install, first doing the steps that lead to phablet-flash -b and then the manual ones. In both cases, I get stuck at the Google boot screen. It does not boot into Touch. No errors during manual install, and adb devices shows the device, but I get the following with phablet-flash or phablet-flash -b (second and subsequent times, not the first time): Device detected as /system/bin/sh: getprop: not found Unsupported device, autodetect fails device When working on flipped images, detection does not work and would require -d Not clear what that all means. The Nexus 4 had the initial Touch dev preview on it, FYI. I saw no separate instructions for upgrading from that.

• Nvidia Fullscreen Metanode "Sliding" Issue

  i have 2 monitors, the left one is my "main" monitor with 1920x1080_120, the right one my second with 1680x1050_60. (i have a nvidia card setup with twinview) when i play a game or something in fullscreen mode, the full resolution is used in fullscreen (monitor 1 + monitor 2). i read something about the metanodes i can use to shut down the one monitor that i dont need durning a "fullscreen session". i used the following: Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: 1920x1080_120 +0+0, DFP-2: 1680x1050_60 +1920+0; DFP: 1920x1080_120 +0+0, NULL" Its working great, the second (right) monitor is shutting down when i press "CTRL ALT +" and is starting agin when i press the same keystroke. But in the second mode when the second monitor is "down", i got the full "monitor 1 + monitor 2" resolution on my first (left) monitor, i can move my mouse to the right to see the contents of the second monitor and move it again to the left to the what is normally seen on the first monitor. Its something sliding between the 2 monitors on one display. How can i avoid this?

• Processing Text and Binary (Blob, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView) Payload in WebSocket - (TOTD #185)

  The WebSocket API defines different send(xxx) methods that can be used to send text and binary data. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will show how to send and receive text and binary data using WebSocket. TOTD #183 explains how to get started with a WebSocket endpoint using GlassFish 4. A simple endpoint from that blog looks like: @WebSocketEndpoint("/endpoint") public class MyEndpoint { public void receiveTextMessage(String message) { . . . } } A message with the first parameter of the type String is invoked when a text payload is received. The payload of the incoming WebSocket frame is mapped to this first parameter. An optional second parameter, Session, can be specified to map to the "other end" of this conversation. For example: public void receiveTextMessage(String message, Session session) {     . . . } The return type is void and that means no response is returned to the client that invoked this endpoint. A response may be returned to the client in two different ways. First, set the return type to the expected type, such as: public String receiveTextMessage(String message) { String response = . . . . . . return response; } In this case a text payload is returned back to the invoking endpoint. The second way to send a response back is to use the mapped session to send response using one of the sendXXX methods in Session, when and if needed. public void receiveTextMessage(String message, Session session) {     . . .     RemoteEndpoint remote = session.getRemote();     remote.sendString(...);     . . .     remote.sendString(...);    . . .    remote.sendString(...); } This shows how duplex and asynchronous communication between the two endpoints can be achieved. This can be used to define different message exchange patterns between the client and server. The WebSocket client can send the message as: websocket.send(myTextField.value); where myTextField is a text field in the web page. Binary payload in the incoming WebSocket frame can be received if ByteBuffer is used as the first parameter of the method signature. The endpoint method signature in that case would look like: public void receiveBinaryMessage(ByteBuffer message) {     . . . } From the client side, the binary data can be sent using Blob, ArrayBuffer, and ArrayBufferView. Blob is a just raw data and the actual interpretation is left to the application. ArrayBuffer and ArrayBufferView are defined in the TypedArray specification and are designed to send binary data using WebSocket. In short, ArrayBuffer is a fixed-length binary buffer with no format and no mechanism for accessing its contents. These buffers are manipulated using one of the views defined by one of the subclasses of ArrayBufferView listed below: Int8Array (signed 8-bit integer or char) Uint8Array (unsigned 8-bit integer or unsigned char) Int16Array (signed 16-bit integer or short) Uint16Array (unsigned 16-bit integer or unsigned short) Int32Array (signed 32-bit integer or int) Uint32Array (unsigned 16-bit integer or unsigned int) Float32Array (signed 32-bit float or float) Float64Array (signed 64-bit float or double) WebSocket can send binary data using ArrayBuffer with a view defined by a subclass of ArrayBufferView or a subclass of ArrayBufferView itself. The WebSocket client can send the message using Blob as: blob = new Blob([myField2.value]);websocket.send(blob); where myField2 is a text field in the web page. The WebSocket client can send the message using ArrayBuffer as: var buffer = new ArrayBuffer(10);var bytes = new Uint8Array(buffer);for (var i=0; i<bytes.length; i++) { bytes[i] = i;}websocket.send(buffer); A concrete implementation of receiving the binary message may look like: @WebSocketMessagepublic void echoBinary(ByteBuffer data, Session session) throws IOException {    System.out.println("echoBinary: " + data);    for (byte b : data.array()) {        System.out.print(b);    }    session.getRemote().sendBytes(data);} This method is just printing the binary data for verification but you may actually be storing it in a database or converting to an image or something more meaningful. Be aware of TYRUS-51 if you are trying to send binary data from server to client using method return type. • Scuttlebutt Reconciliation from "Efficient Reconciliation and Flow Control for Anti-Entropy Protocols"

  This question might be more suited to math.stackexchange.com, but here goes: Their Version Reconciliation takes two parts-- first the exchange of digests, and then an exchange of updates. I'll first paraphrase the paper's description of each step. To exchange digests, two peers send one another a set of pairs-- (peer, max_version) for each peer in the network, and then each one responds with a set of deltas. The deltas look like: (peer, key, value, version), for all tuples for which peer's state maps the key to the given value and version, and the version number is greater than the maximum version number peer has seen. This seems to require that each node remember the state of each other node, and the highest version number and ID each node has seen. Question Why must we iterate through all peers to exchange information between p and q?

• Getting "System program problem detected" pops up regularly after dist-upgrade

  This started to happen immediately after I had rebooted the first time after doing a system upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. It first starts with a dialogue that says "System program problem detected". Then when I try to hit 'report problem' not much happens. I am led through a dialogue that always ends up the problem cannot be solved. I am running a MacBook1,1 I am aware this is not a lot of information, however I'm not sure which information I need to publish and how should I obtain it to debug this problem. Here's a screenshot!

• De-facto standards for customer information record

  I'm currently evaluating a potential new project that involves creating a DB for typical customer information (userid, pwd, first & last name, email, adress, telfnr ...). At this point, requirements are only roughly defined. The customer DB is expected in the O(millions) of records. In order to calculate some back-of-the-envelope numbers for DB sizing and evaluate potential DB options & architectures, I'm looking for some de-facto standards for these kind of records. In particular, the std size of every field (first name, last name, address,...) or typical avg for a simple customer record would be great info. With so many e-commerce websites out there, there should be some kind of typical config that can be reused and avoid re-inventing the wheel. Any ideas?

  Over time a user will have several problems with Ubuntu as any other OS in the world. What tools and terminal commands exist in Ubuntu to help diagnose how the problem occurred and help solve it if it can be done. Problems like: Ubuntu Freezes after X time or when using Y app Ubuntu rebooted/hibernated/suspended all by itself Ubuntu not showing video or video has problems Ubuntu not making any sound or sound has problems Ubuntu not reading X drive (Pen drive, Internal Drive, External Drive...) • 12.04 Install on a HP dv9000 screen problem

  Installed 12.04 on a HP dv9000 laptop. First tried to install with a Windows partition; then tried to install and move files from windows but not have a dual boot; then tried to install and have 12.04 have the system all to itself. The install was done off a burned CD... All went well. On reboot - it takes a while to come up the user ID and password challenge. After providing input screen renders and then turns black... First time Ubuntu user/installer - not technical :-)... Thanks for any help... I'll keepon digging in parallel.

• Screen brightness dull after upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 I found that I could not increase screen brightness. I'm using a Samsung NC110 netbook. Initially the function key to modify brightness did not respond at all. After implementation of the first part of the fix, the key came alive and the brightness bar could be modified. Yet at maximum brightness indicated the screen still remained very dull. The 2nd part of the fix cures that problem, at least for this type of machine. First part of the fix was copied and modified in line with my experience from following post: How to control Brightness Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). Then type sudo nano /etc/default/grub. It will ask for your password. Type it in. Around the 11th line, there will be something like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash". Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" Save the file by Ctrl+O followed by Ctrl+X. Then run sudo update-grub in the terminal. Reboot and see if backlight adjustment works. Then I needed to modify the rc.local file. Therefore read below fix to understand the procedure: problem with adjusting brightness Ubuntu 14.04 In my case I had 2 folders listed under /sys/class/backlight which were: intel_backlight samsung I realized that the samsung folder is governing. I had to modify the check for max brightness to: cat /sys/class/backlight/samsung/max_brightness In my case the max value obtained is 8. Besides putting this into rc.local, I also had to uncomment the first line to get this working. My rc.local under /etc/ now looks as follows: !/bin/sh -e # # rc.local # # This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel. # Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other # value on error. # # In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution # bits. # # By default this script does nothing. echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness exit 0 Now I can modify brightness on my netbook and also can get the screen up to its maximum brightness. • Generating Wrappers for REST APIs

  Would it be feasible to generate wrappers for REST APIs? An earlier question asked about machine readable descriptions of RESTful services addressed how we could write (and then read) API specifications in a standardized way which would lend itself well to generated wrappers. Could a first pass parser generate a decent wrapper that human intervention could fix up? Perhaps the first pass wouldn't be consistent, but would remove a lot of the grunt work and make it easy to flesh out the rest of the API and types. What would need to be considered? What's stopping people from doing this? Has it already been done and my google fu is weak for the day?

  I use Projectile for my weapon system and UDKProjectile has two main function to handle Hit of projectiles(=bullet of my weapon): simulated function ProcessTouch(Actor Other, Vector HitLocation, Vector HitNormal) // For Actors simulated event HitWall(vector HitNormal, actor Wall, PrimitiveComponent WallComp) // Everything except Actors ( I guess) the first method, the function just give me the actor which I hit and my question is How I can get that actor's physical material by first parameter ( Other ), in order to make a proper react about it ( for example a proper Sound of collide ) ... A tricky (but hateful ) way which I knew works is, make a Trace from a little back of that actor to that actor, and use HitInfo parameter which include physical Material ! But there should be a more standard way !

• Could JQuery and similar tools be built into the browser install?

  After reading another question about JQuery and CDN's, is it feasible for tools like JQuery to "come with" the browser, thus reducing/eliminating the need for the first download from a CDN, or from your own host server. JQuery files specifically are pretty small, so you could easily have a number (all?) of the different versions as part of a browser install. Now fair enough, this would increase install footprint, download time for the browser itself. Then sites could check "local" first, before CDN (which then caches), before finally defaulting to downloading from the website server itself. If this is feasible, has it been done, and if not, why hasn't it be done?

  The world of software creation is very competitive. I've heard it said to be successful you need to be the first one with the idea. Everyone knows how Bill Gates created IBM DOS on one machine while simultaneously building MS-DOS on another machine (and we all know how that turned out). In order to be the first to come up with a new software product, where do you go looking for fresh ideas? Update 06/26/13: Reworded this question in an attempt to get it reopened. Bill Gates developed MS-DOS at the same time he was hired to develop IBM DOS. As a programming community, we would all gain by understanding how to think up great ideas for software. As programmer we tend to get stuck in our thinking... it's refreshing to hear how fellow programmers busted out and came up with their ideas. It's not very likely that we will have an MS-DOS opportunity like Bill Gates. Please vote to reopen.

  Start with an array of arrays; in this case, they are different lengths in order to demonstrate the technique, but they do not have to be. [[1,2,3,4], [5,6,7], [8,9,10], [11,12,13,14,15]] At the other end of the transformation, you have an array of arrays where the first array contains the first element from each of the original arrays, the second array contains the second element from each of the original arrays, and so on. [[1,5,8,11], [2,6,9,12], [3,7,10,13], [4,14], [15]] Is there a mathematical or CS term for this operation?

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/vincentgrondin/archive/2014/06/07/tricky-situation-with-ef-and-include-while-projecting-select.aspxHello, the other day I stumbled on a problem I had a while back with EF and Include method calls and decided this was it and I was going to blog about it…  This would sort of to pin it inside my head and maybe help others too !  So I was using DBContext and wanted to query a DBSet and include some of it’s associations and in the end, do a projection to get a list of Ids…   At first it seems easy…  Query your DBSet, call Include right afterward, then code the rest of your statement with the appropriate where clause and then, do the projection…   Well it wasn’t that easy as my query required I code my where on some entities a few degree further in the association chain and most of these links where “Many”…  I had to do my projection right away with the SelectMany method.  So I did my stuff and tested the query….  no association where loaded…  My Include statement was simply ignored !  Then I remembered this behavior and how to get it to work…  You need to move the Include AFTER your first projection (Select or SelectMany).  So my sequence became:   Query the DBSet, do the projection with SelectMany, Include the associations, code the where clause and do the final projection…. but it wouldn’t compile…   It kept saying that it could not find an “Include” method on an IQueryable… which is perfectly true!  I knew this should work so I went to the definition of the DBset and saw it inherited DBQuery and sure enough the include method was there…  So I had to cast my statement from start until the end of the first projection in a DBQuery then do the Includes and then the rest of my query….   Bottom line is, whenever your Include statement seem to be ignored, then maybe you will need to move them further down in your query and cast your statement in whatever class gives you access to the Include…   Happy coding all !

• Unity session goes to lock on app launch, and won't unlock with password

  Has been happening on every Ubuntu machine I've used to date, which is a total of 4. Started in 12.10 as far as I know, but it might have happened with 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 and now 14.04. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, but what always seems to trigger it is opening a web browser or some other application first from the sidebar. Firefox was was the most recent trigger. Instead of opening my browser, which it acts like it's going to do... the session locks, goes to the login screen, and won't unlock with the correct password. By 'won't unlock' I mean it unlocks then immediately locks again without first restoring unity, it does not produce 'incorrect password' I suspect this is a virus or password snooping software because of the fact it won't unlock with correct password information and I think if this IS a security issue, it should be fixed asap considering it's widespread throughout multiple versions. It's probably not a virus, but it is certainly suspicious behaviour to see your pc do that... wouldn't you think?

• Elantech trackpad being identified as a logitech wheel mouse

  I recently purchased a Samsung RF510 laptop computer, which I absolutely love. However, upon installing Ubuntu 10.10 onto it I couldn't get the trackpad to function properly. It worked as a basic mouse (point and click) but had no functionality for edge scrolling or any of the multitouch settings the trackpad is capable of. After doing a lot of research I discovered the reason is a known issue where the Ubuntu kernel will improperly detect an Elantech trackpad as a logitech PS/2 wheel mouse, and as such will gain none of the functionality that seems to be coded for synaptics trackpads. The question I have is: does anyone know a way to get this working properly? This is my first time trying to run Ubuntu on a laptop (actually, it's my first laptop in the last 12 years) and I'm finding the experience to be intolerable without the basic scrolling/zooming/etc I've been used to using for as long as I can remember.
