• Text Formatting toolbar continuously disappears in Impress (open office)

  This is a very weird and annoying problem. Not sure if it's a bug or a "feature" I'm using OpenOffice 3.2 (within Ubuntu 10.04). The Text Formatting toolbars disappear in many circumstances, e.g. each time I click out of a writing area. It's becoming very time consuming to go to View-Toolbars-TextFormatting to re-enable it each time. 3 questions: is this expected behavior, and if so, is there any setting where I can change it? (note this wasn't happening in the past with other presentation I made)? is there a workaround, such as defining a shortcut like CTRL-whatever that would make the toolbar appearing without menu joggling? is anybody experiencing this too, especially someone using LibreOffice?

• Missing characters when printing in linux

  I have a pdf that I was printing recently, and on the final printout there is a single character that doesn't print. It is the greek letter phi, and the pdf was built with pdflatex. The phi shows up in every pdf reader I have tried, and if I convert to a ps using pdftops before printing that solves the problem. Also, I sent the pdf to a buddy who has a very similar machine (Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, with the same printer drivers), and he was able to print it (to the same printer) and the character showed up. Clearly I have a workaround, but I'm more curious as to where I should be looking to figure out what is causing this bug? What is the printing "toolchain", and where could it be going wrong?

• Clicking on Dock icon does not bring window on top (OS X Lion)

  I am using OS X Lion and I have a very annoying problem with windows not showing up when I click on Dock icons. It happens when I have some windows opened in one space but I am viewing another space at the moment. For example, I have Mail and Skype on space #2 but I am on space #1. Note that all windows are not minimized. I want to quickly switch to Mail. So I click on Mail icon in Dock, it switches the space to #2, menubar shows that active window is Mail but Mail window is actually below Skype window. The strangest thing is that sometimes it works as expected showing the Mail on top. I can't see any logic here, it's absolutely unpredictable, thus annoying. Does anyone experienced such problems? I wonder if it's a bug or correct behaviour. Is there any way to fix that?

  Suppose I open 10 Word files and 10 Excel files and make no changes, how do I quickly taskkill all at once? Because I must repeat several attempts to replicate race, I'm hoping for a command-line solution. I'm willing to try PowerShell and cygwin (1.5) if necessary. The OS is Windows XP SP3 with current patches (still IE7). I tried "taskkill /pid 1 /pid 2 /t" where 1 is PID of EXCEL.EXE and 2 is PID of WINWORD.EXE, but it closed only 1 window of each program. • Workstation 7 build 203739 - Capture Movie Mouse Pointer Not Visible

  Hi, I have noticed that whenever I create a Capture Movie, the movie is fine but the mouse pointer is not visible at all. The clicks are on buttons file menus are executed but is hard for a viewer of the capturre movie session to follow the recording smoothly. This was not a problem in previous versions of WorkStation. Is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to see the mouse pointer? Note: VM Tools are installed, Host is Vista Ultimate Edtion SP1, x64 and the guest is a Win XP SP2. • There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint? • Ubuntu/Linux version recommendation for HP dv6 3122TX?

  I purchased a HP dv6 3122TX recently and after installing Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit I ran into multiple issues like, The wireless driver is not supported by Uubntu. (1) [The driver is RaLink RT3090 ] The ethernet stopped working sometimes for no reason [The driver is Realtek RTL8111/8168B ] "Corrupted low memory at ..." issue which is described as a kernel bug in Ubuntu support forums. (It started to take me to a terminal instead of the GUI and couldn't start x server after that) As I'm not an expert Ubuntu user I got fed up of all these issue and got back to Windows 7. But I need an Ubuntu installation up and running for my development work. What are your suggestions about a reasonable Ubuntu version that I should try? Or a different Linux variation? Should I stick to a 32-bit version? It'd be great anyone can give some advice on this issue.

• Losing internet connection after few minutes (5-10 maybe)

  I took a computer that was not updated for months. Internet was working just fine so basically, I updated zonealarm, avast and installed all windows updates and especially SP3. After that, when I reboot, Internet works fine but after few minutes, Firefox says that the connection was reset. IE does not work either. However, my connection is still up and running as I can make a ping on www.google.com for example. Here are the solutions I tried with no success so far: 1) Uninstalling SP3; 2) Uninstalling IE8 and IE7; 3) Manually setting DNS and IPs; 4) Removed proxy settings from Firefox and IE; 5) Restarting DNS and DHCP related services; 6) Reset TCP/IP with netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt; 7) Updated my ehternet card driver; 8) Restarted, tweaked all the connections in any directions and any configuration possible I believe; 9) Disabled Zone Alarm and Avast; Also, update kb981793 always fails on install. Please, help me as I spent two days already on this and I cannot find any solution. If I cannot fix this problem tomorrow, I will have to format-reinstall everything. Thanks for any help. Regards.

• Server speed: sharing one script.php or using many copies the same script.php

  Let's assume: I have thousands of domains on same Apache server. Each domain is in a folder under server public_html document folder, so it can be accessed by calling "www.somedomain.com" or by calling "www.serverdomain.com/somedomain_folder" In each domain there is a website who needs a certain script.php (identical for each domain). From a coding point view, its obvious that it's better to use a unique script.php, so when i update it with new features/bug fixes etc, I need to update on server only one file and it will work for all domains. But from a server point of view? If i use a unique script all domains will access it at the same time, will the server run slower compared to the situation where each domain called its own script?

• Running a webserver behind a firewall, is it secure?

  Currently we have a Linux-based firewall which NAT-ing our public IP address to give internet access to our staff's PCs and a Windows Server 2003 for internal filesharing. I want to host Redmine/SVN (a bugtracker) internally behind this firewall using a Linux server. This webserver will be accessed by our clients externally so they can post bug reports. This means that I have to open port 80 & 22 at the firewall to give access to the webserver and me to SSH it from home. However, let's say I'm using password-based SSH for the webserver and somebody cracked it. Does that mean the cracker could ping and access other servers and PCs in the network?

• How to fix Windows XP from muting sounds on every startup?

  This started to happen few days ago: Every time I start up my computer, the global sound volume ("Playback") is set to muted (from the checkbox), in the sound control panel. So I have to open the control panel every time i start up my computer, and click that checkbox. I have got this bug before, long time ago. I have no idea why is this happening. Any ideas how to fix this or what is causing it? I have SP 3 and most updates installed a half year ago or less.

• Windows XP failing to set theme correctly on auto-login

  On several testing machines we have, when automatic login (as Administrator) is activated, Windows fails to set theme (Display properties - Themes) correctly. Particularly, even if theme is set to "Windows Classic", visually it's obvious that "Windows XP" is applied (the one with blue title bars and red "X" butons). I have only seen this happen when Auto-login is set--we always use Administrator on XP. Even if I log out and back in manually, theme is set correctly. Apart from logging out and in, it's also possible to reset theme in "Display properties". It does not happen in 100% of the cases, but it's way over 50%. Definitely it's often enough to be annoying. I believe this is a bug in Windows XP. I have never encountered it on other Windows versions. Does anybody know how to avoid this issue once forever? (Or can anybody provide explanation, relevant links, etc.?)

  The problem with our server is that we need to use the bug ridden and awful AT&T network client, which causes our server to bluescreen once per 24 hours. Does any one know how to (or has a good guide) quickly set up a workstation running Windows server 2008 R2 as a proxy server. So this spare workstation would run AT&T and would act as a bridge between our server and the server that can be connected to only via the AT&T VPN software. And this way our own production server would not crash so often (or not at all) and the workstation can happily crash whenever it wants to.

• Recommend a Rackspace Cloud Server API Language Binding?

  Rackspace publishes only a hard-to-use HTTP and JSON/XML based "API" (they call it an API but it's really a non-standard Web Service without a WSDL). There are dozens of open-source language bindings to choose from. I have tried three of them so far and they're all horrible (incomplete, buggy, and/or undocumented). Can anybody recommend a language binding which is reasonably complete, well documented, and bug-free? I can use Perl, Python, PHP, or Java. My ultimate objective is to create a script/program that will provision a server, launch a process inside it, wait for the process to finish, copy the results to the local server, and destroy the remote server. What's the best choice for that? Thanks

• How to disable auto-assume in Google Chrome

  I've noticed that whenever I sign in in Google Chrome version 21.0 it automatically assumes and it automatically knows what I want to search. I basically use the address bar to search(my default search engine is Google) I don't go type Google.com on the address bar and then search from there. So what happens is that when I type something for example "vernier" for vernier caliper I'm automatically redirected to my facebook account which has a user account name of vern.ancheta. It's really getting annoying, this happens for every search term that I used maybe even ones that I haven't used before in my entire search history in Google. It always assumes as if it knows what I'm really thinking. What's the solution for this? Is this a bug in Google Chrome or just one of its annoying features. Please enlighten me on this.

• Rsync : execute permission required

  I'm using rsync between two servers to transfer files. The problem is some files are not transferred. I get this error : rsync: readlink "/var/www/index.html" failed: Permission denied (13) So I check permissions on the server and after make tests, I notice a file is transferred only if it has these permissions : R-W ! If the file have these permissions : R--, Rsync can't download it !? Command: /usr/bin/rsync -avzr -e "/usr/bin/ssh -i /home/replication/thishost-rsync-key" [email protected]:/var/www/index.html ./ Is it a bug with Rsync ? I find any information about this problem. • What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

  When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency.   I'm trying to use uWSGI with a virtual env in order to use the Trac bug tracker on it. I've installed system-wide uwsgi via pip. Next, I've installed trac in a virtualenv $ virtualenv venv $ . venv/bin/activate $ pip install trac I've then written a simple uWSGI configuration script: [uwsgi] master = true processes = 1 socket = localhost:3032 home = /srv/http/trac/venv/ no-site = true gid = www-data uid = www-data env = TRAC_ENV=/srv/http/trac/projects/my_project module = trac.web.main:dispatch_request But when I try to launch it, it fails: $ uwsgi --http :8000 --ini /etc/uwsgi/vassals-available/my_project.ini --gid www-data --uid www-data ... Set PythonHome to /srv/http/trac/venv/ ... *** Operational MODE: single process *** ImportError: No module named trac.web.main unable to load app 0 (mountpoint='') (callable not found or import error) I think uWSGI isn't using the virtual env. When inside the virtual env, I can import trac.web.main without having an ImportError. How can I do that ? Thanks

• Firefox loses app tabs when I shut down my computer sometimes

  When I shut down my computer sometimes my app tabs do not reopen in Firefox and I need to remake all of them which is pretty annoying. I don't know if this is a common bug it might be specific to my computer. I run Vista x64 and it just seems to still have quite a bit of problems. Sometimes when I command it to shut down it does not simply showing shut down loading for hours so I need to manually turn it off. I think that might be messing up Firefox but I'm not sure. I also found a related thread on Bugzilla about this problem but I don't think it's the same issue as it only happens when I shut down my computer.

• Deleting sender from Outlook Safe Senders using GPO?

  We're having an external company do a mailshot to our users. The message contains images that are linked rather than embedded in the image (bandwidth isn't an issue). So of course on recent versions of Outlook you're prompted to download the images, not the end of the world, but it would be nice if that didn't happen. There's a bug in the Office/Outlook ADM/ADMX templates that means that a custom list of Safe Senders won't import unless you follow this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2252421 Thing is, if I remove an entry from the Safe Senders file, it doesn't seem to remove it from Outlook, which seems odd?

  I'm trying to run a service that uses $HOME and $USER environment variables. I could set them in service itself, but that would only be a temporary solution. Let's say I have a script test.sh with following content: echo $USER And I run it with start-stop-daemon to see my results: $ start-stop-daemon --start --exec `pwd`/test.sh --user guest --group guest --chuid -guest root Seems like it does not update environment, maybe that should be reported as a bug? I have found a nasty hacky solution, which only works (for unknown reason) on my this simple use case: $ start-stop-daemon --exec /usr/bin/sudo --start -- -u guest -i 'echo $USER' guest I'm sure someone else stumbled upon this, I'm interested in clean solution. $ start-stop-daemon --version start-stop-daemon 1.13.11+gentoo

• Chrome shows page shifted left

  Courtesy of goal.com Check the pointer that I drew. It doesn't point the right arrow (-), however, it looks like hover on that arrow (arrow turns into green color). Moreover, when I press at that area, it will be directed to link that is specified by that button. Another bug is on the scroll bar. The display show the scroll bar is shifted left, so there is a gap. However, the area that can be clicked remain at the right end of the page.

• Mac OS 10.7 DMG files don't pop up anymore?

  Has anybody noticed that double-clicking on a DMG file no longer raises the mounted image to the front of all windows? It used to be that when you double-clicked a dmg file, it would pop-up but now you have to click Finder and click on the mounted image. Is this a bug, by design or a setting that I can change? Update: As per Daniel Beck's suggestion, I created a new account and downloaded the most recent version of Firefox via Safari. It still exhibited the same behavior. However, I noticed that if I double-click thew DMG from within the Downloads folder in Finder, it does pop up. But when I double-click the DMG within Safari (and Firefox also) it does not pop up over all other windows.

• how do I 'hard refresh' a shared directory?

  VMWare player 4.0.1 build-528992 I added a file to a shared directory in Windows 7. When I ls -l that directory in Ubuntu 11 it looks like: (2nd line) ls: cannot access item_spec.rb: No such file or directory -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 300 2012-01-11 12:05 user_spec.rb -????????? ? ? ? ? ? item_spec.rb How can I get the folder to "refresh"? I need to use this file in Ubuntu. I think it will be present if I restart the VM, but that seems excessive. This looks like a bug.
