• Operate on pairs of rows of a data frame

  I've got a data frame in R, and I'd like to perform a calculation on all pairs of rows. Is there a simpler way to do this than using a nested for loop? To make this concrete, consider a data frame with ten rows, and I want to calculate the difference of scores between all (45) possible pairs. > data.frame(ID=1:10,Score=4*10:1) ID Score 1 1 40 2 2 36 3 3 32 4 4 28 5 5 24 6 6 20 7 7 16 8 8 12 9 9 8 10 10 4 I know I could do this calculation with a nested for loop, but is there a better (more R-ish) way to do it?

• CreatePatternBrush and screen color depth

  I am creating a brush using CreatePatternBrush with a bitmap created with CreateBitmap. The bitmap is 1 pixel wide and 24 pixels tall, I have the RGB value for each pixel, so I create an array of rgbquads and pass that to CreateBitmap. This works fine when the screen color depth is 32bpp, since the bitmap I create is also 32bpp. When the screen color depth is not 32bpp, this fails, and I understand why it does, since I should be creating a compatible bitmap instead. It seems I should use CreateCompatibleBitmap instead, but how do I put the pixel data I have into that bitmap? I have also read about CreateDIBPatternBrushPt, CreateDIBitmap, CreateDIBSection, etc. I don´t understand what is a DIBSection, and find the subject generally confusing. I do understand that I need a bitmap with the same color depth as the screen, but how do I create it having only the 32bpp pixel data?

Thus, I'll need to set up a cron job with a frequency of 1 minute. I think Google App Engine gives free cron job. But I'm very new to it. I downloaded the java SDK and read the document but understood nothing :( So, I can't use Google App Engine. Is here any other free service like Google app engine which but with easier inferface???   If one is using a subclass of NSOpenGLView then one enables depth testing by selecting a 16/24/32 bit buffer from the attributes menu in Xcode, and then adding glEnable(GL_DEPTH_TEST); glClear(GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); to the drawRect method. However, in the application I'm creating I'm rendering OpenGL content via the drawInCGLContext method of a CAOpenGLLayer which is contained within a subclass of NSView. This means that it is no longer possible to create a depth buffer via the inspector. Does anyone know how I can achieve this in such a situation?

• PHP - Concatenating objects and casting to string - bad idea?

  Is it bad practice to concatenate objects when used in this context: $this->template->head .= new View('custom_javascript') This is the way i normally add extra css/js stuff to specific pages. I use an MVC structure where my basic html template has a $head variable which I set in my main Website_controller. I have used this approach for a while as it means I can just add bits and pieces of css/js stuff from whichever page/controller needs it. But having come across a problem in PHP 5.1.6 where the above code results in "Object ID #24", the result of toString() not being called i think, I am rethinking whether i should just fix this to work in PHP 5.1.6 or if i should rethink this approach in general. Any pointers appreciated!

  When I am executing following query then its not updating views column by 1 instead sometimes its updating it by 2 or 3. Say currently views count is 24 then after executing this query it becomes 26 or sometimes its 27. $views = $views + 1; $_SQL = ''; $_SQL = 'UPDATE videos SET views = '.$views.' I know that this would do this the job alarms.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP,triggerAtTime, interval,alarmIntent); But what is confusing me is what to put in the triggerAtTime and the interval.It says System.currentTimeMillis() timebase. I might be installing the app on any day so the TriggerAtTime should be midnight of that day and the interval would be 24 hours from there on. • Huge page buffer vs. multiple simultaneous processes

  One of our customer has a 35 Gb database with average active connections count about 70-80. Some tables in database have more than 10M records per table. Now they have bought new server: 4 * 6 Core = 24 Cores CPU, 48 Gb RAM, 2 RAID controllers 256 Mb cache, with 8 SAS 15K HDD on each. 64bit OS. I'm wondering, what would be a fastest configuration: 1) FB 2.5 SuperServer with huge buffer 8192 * 3500000 pages = 29 Gb or 2) FB 2.5 Classic with small buffer of 1000 pages. Maybe some one has tested such case before and will save me days of work :) Thanks in advance.

• Adding a transparent bitmap to a windows button

  It's a while since I've done this, but I'm trying to add a custom button graphic to a windows button, with some transparent areas. I've tried various schemes but can't seem to get the transparent areas to show. It works if my bitmap is a 1-bit bitmap. I couldn't get a 32 bit bitmap to work, and I'm not sure how to setup a 24 bit or 8 bit bitmap to do it.... I tried a custom 255,0,255 color (which IIRC is a default transparent value), but so far no joy....

• What's the fastest way to scrape a lot of pages in php?

  I have a data aggregator that relies on scraping several sites, and indexing their information in a way that is searchable to the user. I need to be able to scrape a vast number of pages, daily, and I have ran into problems using simple curl requests, that are fairly slow when executed in rapid sequence for a long time (the scraper runs 24/7 basically). Running a multi curl request in a simple while loop is fairly slow. I speeded it up by doing individual curl requests in a background process, which works faster, but sooner or later the slower requests start piling up, which ends up crashing the server. Are there more efficient ways of scraping data? perhaps command line curl?

  /I'm working with and testing on a computer that is built with the following: {1 GB RAM (now 1.5 GB), 1.7 GHz Intel Pentium Processor, ATI Mobility Radeon X600 GFX} I need scale / transform controls and make it flow smoothly. Currently I'm manipulating the size and location of a control every 24-33ms (30fps), ±3px. When I add a 'fade' effect to an image, it fades in and out smoothly, but it is only 25x25 px in size. The control is 450x75 px to 450x250 px in size. In 2D games such as Bejeweled 3, the sprites animate with no choppy animation. So as the title would suggest: which is easier/faster on the processor: animating a bitmap (rendering it to the parent control during animation) or animating the control it's self?

  Why Flex 3 DataGrid reads a string from XML lastResult.node as number? A field is saved as var_char in mysql, php reads it as string and pass it OK. If there are more then 16 charaters it gets rounded.... For example: this in database cell: 12345678901234567 gets read in DataGrid as nubmer as 12345678901234568 this is in database cell: 5555544444222223333377777 php reads it same and puts it in XML flex reads XML into arrayCollection and DataGrid reads it as: 5.55554444422222e+24 So it reads it as number, why? And how to make it read as String? I tried with labelFunction, no help.
