• Microsoft and Application Architectures

  Microsoft has dealt with several kinds of application architectures to include but not limited to desktop applications, web applications, operating systems, relational database systems, windows services, and web services. Because of the size and market share of Microsoft, virtually every modern language works with or around a Microsoft product. Some of the languages include: Visual Basic, VB.Net, C#, C++, C, ASP.net, ASP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java and XML. From my experience, Microsoft strives to maintain an n-tier application standard where an application is comprised of multiple layers that perform specific functions, for example: presentation layer, business layer, data access layer are three general layers that just about every formally structured application contains. The presentation layer contains anything to do with displaying information to the screen and how it appears on the screen. The business layer is the middle man between the presentation layer and data access layer and transforms data from the data access layer in to useable information to be stored later or sent to an output device through the presentation layer. The data access layer does as its name implies, it allows the business layer to access data from a data source like MS SQL Server, XML, or another data source. One of my favorite technologies that Microsoft has come out with recently is the .Net Framework. This framework allows developers to code an application in multiple languages and compiles them in to one intermediate language called the Common Language Runtime (CLR). This allows VB and C# developers to work seamlessly together as if they were working in the same project. The only real disadvantage to using the .Net Framework is that it only natively runs on Microsoft operating systems. However, Microsoft does control a majority of the operating systems currently installed on modern computers and servers, especially with personal home computers. Given that the Microsoft .Net Framework is so flexible it is an ideal for business to develop applications around it as long as they wanted to commit to using Microsoft technologies and operating systems in the future. I have been a professional developer for about 9+ years now and have seen the .net framework work flawlessly in just about every instance I have used it. In addition, I have used it to develop web applications, mobile phone applications, desktop applications, web service applications, and windows service applications to name a few.

• How to I prevent decimal truncation in Word 2003 when a document is auto populated via a Web Service

  I have a document template which is being auto populated via an external web service. The incoming data exists as a currency (e.g. 3.10) but when it is passed into the Word Document template the variable is truncated to remove any trailing 0's. I need the number to always appear with 2 decimals, even if they are both 0's. This is with the 2003 version of Word, I have not tested with other versions since all of our document templates need to be generated using that version of Word. I feel like this can be done with a Macro or a VB script but I have a very small amount of time & no experience with these tools - Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Why can't I install Microsoft Office 2007 in Ubuntu 11.04?

  I am very new to Ubuntu and only just getting a hang of it, and my questions might sound stupid especially because I am a learner in terms of techie things as well. So because of the nature of work where everyone uses stupid Windows and Microsoft, I need to have access to MS Office 2007/2010 as documents with too many tables or images open all haywire in Libre Office (which has otherwise been great!). I have been reading up about installing MS Office through WINE/PlayonLinux, but have been unsuccessful so far. I downloaded a MS Office 2007 package from Pirate Bay, which I extracted into a folder. I tried numerous different ways to install through WINE and PlayonLinux, but will discuss the one which seems to be getting me somewhere. http://www.webupd8.org/2011/01/how-to-install-microsoft-office-2007-in.html ..... Initially, when I would click on the install button of MS Office, I get a message saying "The install location you selected does not have 1558MB free space. Free up space from the selected install location or choose a different install location". The install location in this case said "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office", which confused me as I don't have drives named as C, Z etc. I went to configure WINE and under the drives tab, created a drive named A with the path location /media/cd025f16-433b-4a90-abb6-bb7a025d0450/. Also the space thing is confusing as I have at least 450GB of unused space on my computer. anyways, when I selected the A drive for installation, the installation starts, but soon I get the following error message, "Office cannot find Office.en-us\OfficeLR.Cab. Browse to a valid installation source" .... The part saying "OfficeLR.Cab" have said different things after the Office bit every time I have made an attempt. When I select the Office.en-us sub-folder or any other folder within the folder where MS Office 2007 is saved, it says "invalid source"! I have been trying to get this sorted since 15hrs now (addictive!) and have learnt loads of things in the process, but have not managed to crack it. It might be something stupidly simple I am not aware off that is stopping it. I would really appreciate some help! Thanks a lot.. Also I am still getting used to the language, so might have many questions Also I am using Ubuntu 11.04 (tag 11.04). Also I think I don't have windows -- when my friend installed Ubuntu on my new laptop which had Windows 7, he was trying to keep windows in a separate partition, but something happened and windows was not there! • How do I debug a cluster running Microsoft server 2003?

  I'm sole developer of a complex critical software system, written in Visual C++ 2005. It's deployed on a classical Microsoft cluster scenario (active/passive), that has Windows Server 2003 R2. If a server A goes down, the other one (B) starts and take the ownership of its duties. You have to know that: Both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. Both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). This software has a main module that launches the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?

  Are there any rules / guidelines for DATA form XLS sheets to be inserted into SQL- DB? I have a group of Excel templates in 2005.Each concerned cell in Excel template is named. When Excel sheets are filled, saved and submitted , the values are transferred to the database. Excel sheets have names for various cells that are to b e filled by the user EX:- for the total number of Milk in the Beginning a given month , there is an Excel Cell Named "mtsBpiPTR180" Total number of Milk in the Ending a given month , there is an Excel Cell Named **"mtsEpiPTR180"** I have added 2 new cells , named "mtsBpiPTR180PA" and "mtsEpiPTR180PA". Now I try to upload the Excel File. But I AM UNABLE TO SEE MY FILLED DATA FROM "mtsBpiPTR180PA" and "mtsEpiPTR180PA" INTO THE RELATED DB/table. The above 2 are empty in the DB/table, even though I have filled them and successfully filed the Excel sheets Now no matter how much I search in the DB/stored procs i am unable to the ACTUAL STORED PROC or how the Data form Excel sheet is inserted into Tables WHERE DATA FROM XLS is inserted into DB. So was wondering:- Are there any rules / guidelines for DATA form XLS sheets to be inserted into SQL- DB?

• Alternatives to Project Euler for improving Excel ability

  I've recently been enjoying using the mathematical problems listed at Project Euler to learn Python. My Excel ability is better than my Python, but I think I'd still benefit from the sort of inductive learning that comes with solving a series of increasingly difficult puzzles using a particular tool. I know Project Euler can be completed using Excel, but are there any other puzzle series similar to this or The Python Challenge specifically tailored for people trying to increase their knowledge of Excel and what it can do? NB. I'm not looking for a "tutorial", I know there are plenty of these. • Excel duration converts to date

  I'm working on an Excel 2010 spreadsheet and I'm trying to put in durations for some tasks I want to schedule.The interesting thing is that up until a few minutes ago, I couldn't do it.I was entering in "47:00" and excel was (and still is) converting it to "1/1/1900 23:00:00"In my mind, I want the value to be 47 minutes, but for the life of me I cannot find a fix for this behavior.Here's the weirdest thing, I haven't had this problem in the past.  Usually I put in times, add them up and they work like magic.  Put in 18 entries of 20 minutes each, total them and excel will usually tell me that it's a total of 6 hours.No problem.Today, problem.Here's the weird bit:As I was writing this post, I got it to work.By formatting the column as custom "[hh]:mm" and summing the columns, I can get total times.But the times are still being formatted into dates if I look at the underlying data.  Bottom line, if you need to calculate durations, you can, but don't look too closely at what is happening underneath the covers.

  Recently while working on a project to import data from an Excel worksheet using SSIS, I realized that sometimes the SSIS Package failed even though when there were no changes in the structure/schema of the Excel worksheet. I investigated it and I noticed that the SSIS Package succeeded for some set of files, but for others it failed. I found that the structure/schema of the worksheet from both these sets of Excel files were the same, the data was the only difference. How come just changing the data can make an SSIS Package fail? What actually causes this failure? What can we do to fix it?

• How to search for newline or linebreak characters in Excel?

  I've imported some data into Excel (from a text file) and it contains some sort of newline characters. It looks like this initially: If I hit F2 (to edit) then Enter (to save changes) on each of the cells with a newline (without actually editing anything), Excel automatically changes the layout to look like this: I don't want these newlines characters here, as it messes up data processing further down the track. How can I do a search for these to detect more of them? The usual search function doesn't accept an enter character as a search character.

What's the most compatible format to save my Excel spreadsheets in? I'm asking as a question here rather than merely Googling for a list of formats that LibreOffice and GoogleDocs support (although I'm doing that too, and will post the answer if no one else does) because there are likely to be hidden "gotchas" that only someone who has experience using all of the above applications is going to know about. Answers that include personal experience will be preferred over those that only post a link to the relevant facts on google.com and libreoffice.com.

• What changes can be made to a Microsoft Account using net user on Windows 8?

  In Windows 8, you can log on with a local account or with a Microsoft Account. Both types show up in the Users control panel, but there are different options that you can change for each type. An administrator can change basically any aspect of a local user - name, password, access level, etc. For a Microsoft Account, you can only change the access level (admin/standard) or remove the account. From the command line though, there don't appear to be any restrictions on what you can do a Microsoft Account. Using the net user tool or the Local Users and Groups MMC snap-in, it looks like an administrator would be able to change the password, display name, profile path, etc. of Microsoft Accounts (as well as local accounts of course). Will these commands actually work when applied to a Microsoft Account? Will using them in some way break the link to the Microsoft Account, or will nothing happen at all? I'm hesitant to test since I don't want to mess up my account permanently.

• Avoid Powerpoint(/Word) 2010 creating temporary files in working directory

  When opening a temporary file, Powerpoint 2010 usually creates a temporary, hidden file called ~$filename.pptx in the same directory. This is undesirable, since it can cause unnecessary activity with e.g. Dropbox. Furthermore, the "Documents" folder should not be used for temporary files -- we have the %TEMP% folder for that. So, is it possible to have Powerpoint create its temporary files in %TEMP% instead? • excel is there a way to delete everything EXCEPT what is selected?

  I have an excel template with 20 tabs (worksheets) and plenty of data in each sheet. When a user opens a copy of the template, he will only need to use one tab. Is there a sneaky way to select that tab, or part of the contents of that tab and then 'delete all except selected'. That way the used file size will be much reduced of the excess clutter. There will be basic excel users adjusting this file so the smaller and easier to manage the better. Thanks, Andy

• Excel cell references not updating when referenced cells are sorted.

  There are two tables, each with 75 entries. Each entry in the 2nd table calls an entry in the first table a parent. One of my 2nd table columns contains the "Parent Price", referencing the Price column in the first table, such as "=E50". Table 1 Id Price 1001 79.25 1002 8.99 1003 24.50 Table 2 Id Price Parent Price 2001 50.00 =B2 2002 2.81 =B3 2003 12.00 =B4 The problem is when I sort the first table, none of the second table's "Parent Price" references are updated, and still point to the =E50 cell, which is no longer the correct parent. I don't want to have to name the cells if possible. What style of formula do I enter in the parent price column so that they properly track the cells in the referenced table?

• How can I refresh a document I have open in Excel in read-only mode?

  I have an Excel document that is stored on a SharePoint Server, which I always have open on my computer in read-only mode because I need to refer to it. Every so often, in order to get the latest changes, I have to close down the file and reload it again. Are there any options within Excel 2007 which allow me to simply refresh a document I have open in read-only mode to the latest version on the server? Better still, is there a way where this could be done dynamically, without me having to hit refresh?

• In an Excel calendar, how can I create a calendar event for a date based on an entry for another date?

  Sounds a bit confusing, doesn't it? I've created an 'events calendar' in Excel for my local area. Each date throughout the year is assigned to a row. What I want to do is, when I enter an event for a particular date, then automatically create an entry elsewhere in the calendar for an action to be taken. So for example, There's an event on the 30th July, so I enter it into the calendar. I'd like to be able to specify that an entry should be made 4 weeks earlier, on the 2nd July, to tell me to blog, tweet or whatever about that particular event. Can Excel help me to do that and if so, what do I need to do?

• How can I regress a number series in Excel?

  I'd like to use these data to derive an equation using Excel. 300 13 310 12.6 320 12.2 330 11.8 340 11.4 350 11 360 10.8 370 10.6 380 10.4 As x goes up, y goes down. Seems straightforward. But when I do a polynomial regression on these data, even though the trendline matches the data pretty well, the equation it generates doesn't work. The equation is When I plug in x values to that equation, the numbers go up! So something is pretty wrong here. My steps: place both number series in excel select the second set (13, 12.6 ...) plot a line graph set the first set as the x axis labels select Series1 and add a polynomial (2) trendline, display equation, display R-squared That produces the equation above, with an R^2 value of .9955. But when I use that equation, it doesn't produce those outputs for those inputs. Clearly I'm doing something wrong.
