• Websites with horizontal sliding panels

  In a recent meeting, I mentioned that I've seen a few websites with horizontal sliding panels and thought the UI was elegant, uncluttered and accessible. Naturally, I was asked to provide examples of those sites, but can't seem to dig up any of them now. Actually, I've been looking on an off for the past few days. (blush) Sooo.... I thought that I would put it out to the brilliant and talented folks who frequent StackOverflow. If you know of a website -- or better yet, have a website -- that uses horizontal sliding panels to provide rich functionality while maintaining a clean UI, would you please take a few moments and paste links here? • ResourceManager and not supported platform

  I use ResourceManager for UI localization of my WinCE 5 software. I have some resource files with text strings on different languages Resourse.resx Resourse.de-DE.resx Resourse.ru-RU.resx When I want to display UI in English I call: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("en-US"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; in German: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("de-DE"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; in Russian: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("ru-RU"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; but here I get PlatformNotSupportedException. I know that my WinCE does not contain Russian and I cannot modify OS to appened this, so my question is how I can say to ResourceManger to use Resourse.ru-RU.resx when I set Culture = new CultureInfo("ru-RU") ?

• Are memory leaks really something to worry about?

  I came across this post today, arguably debatable/wrong somewhat, but worth a shot looking over: http://andyharglesiscodebase.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/why-programmers-shouldnt-worry-about-memory-leaks/ The poster claims that modern OSes automatically have garbage collection implemented in the kernel memory, and that any unfreed user heap memory is managed during "post partum cleanup". It seems like rubbish, but I can't be 100% sure since I am not that knowledgeable on the kernel's memory management setup, etc.

• How to access and work with XML from API in C#

  My goal is to pull XML data from the API and load it to a sql server database. The frist step I'm attempting here is to access the data and display it. Once I get this to work I'll loop through each row and insert the values into a sql server database. When I try to run the code below nothing happens and when I paste the url directly into the browser I get this error "2010-03-08 04:24:17 Wallet exhausted: retry after 2010-03-08 05:23:58. 2010-03-08 05:23:58" To me it seems that every iteration of the foreach loop makes a call to the site and I get blocked for an hour. Am I retrieving data from the API in an incorrect manner? Is there some way to load the data into memory or an array then loop through that? • Pros and Cons on where to place business logic: app level or DB

  Hi, I always again encounter discussions about where to place the business logic: inside a business layer in the application code or down in the DB in terms of stored procedures. Personally I'd tend to the 1st approach, but I'd like to hear some opinions from your part first, without influencing you with my personal views. I know there doesn't exist a one-size-fits-all solution and it often depends on many factors, but we can discuss about that. Btw, we are in the context of web applications and our current approach is to have UI layer which accepts UI input and does a first, client-side validation Business layer with a number of service-classes which contains the business logic including validation for user input (server-side) Data Access Layer which calls stored procedures from the DB for doing persistency/read operations Many people however tend to move the business layer stuff (especially regarding the validation) down to the DB in terms of stored procedures. What do you think about it? I'd like to discuss.

• What's the big difference between those two binary files?

  These are two files (contained in the tar.bz2) that were generated using a just-in-time compiler for a game engine. The generated code from ui-linux.bin is from a x86_64 gcc compiler and the ui-windows.bin from the same brand of compiler but targetting win x86_64 (mingw-w64). I've attempted to debug a problem that occurs only on the windows version and i stumbled upon what it seems to be different end-binary code. However, the input assembly code was virtually identical (only difference being pointer representations as int). (there's theoretically no winabi/unixabi conflict since that's taken care of by an attribute flag on certain declarations involved). Any idea what it might be that makes these two binary codes different? The C for the mini-compiler and base assembly producing it appears compatible at first glance. http://www0.org/vm/bins.tar.bz2

  iPHone: We use MonoTouch, but Obj-C answers are ok. My singleton domain object takes a while to get all the data so it runs internally parts of the fetch in a thread. I need to inform the UI that the domain is done. Currently I do this. Is there a better way? In WinForms I would call Application.DoEvents() instead of Thread Sleep. • Android - Transforming widgets within transformed widgets and the resulting usability issues.

  Hello. I'm new to Android application development and I'm currently experimenting with various UI ideas. In the image below, you can see a vertically scrolling list of horizontally scrolling galleries (and also textviews as you can see). I'm also doing some matrix and camera transformations which I will come to in a minute. For the background of the list elements, I use green. Blue is the background of the galleries, and red is the background for the images. These are just for my benefit of learning. The galleries being used are extended classes where I overrode the drawChild method to perform a canvas scale operation in order for the image closest to the center (width) to be larger than the others. The list view going vertically, I overrode the drawChild method and used the camera rotations from lack of depth dimension in the canvas functionality. The items in the list are scaled down and rotated relative to their position's proximity to the center (height). I understood that scrolling and clicking would not necessarily follow along with the image transforms, but it appears as though the parent Gallery class's drawing is constrained to the original coordinates as well (see photo below). I would love to hear any insight any of you have regarding how I can change the coordinates of the galleries in what is rendered via gallery scroll and the touch responsiveness of said gallery. Images in the gallery are not same dimensions, so don't let that throw you in looking at the image below Thanks in advance! Ben link to image (could not embed) -- Update: I was using my test application UI and noticed that when I got the UI to the point of the linked image and then I touched the top portion of the next row in the list, the gallery updated to display the proper representation. So, I added a call to clearFocus() in the drawChild method and that resulted in more accurate drawing. It does seem a tad slower, and since I'm on the Incredible, I'm worried it is a bloated solution. In any event, I would still appreciate any thoughts you have regarding the best way to have the views display properly and how to translate the touch events in the gallery's new displayed area to its touchable coordinates so that scrolling on the actual images works when the gallery has moved. The base class extends System.Web.UI.Page Furthermore i have a Base User control class where are defined all the properties common to the user controls. the Base User Control extends System.Web.UI.UserControl all the properties in both base classes are protected. All the web pages extends the base class . All the controls extends the base user control class. The problem is i can not access the properties defined in the base class from the user controls and I can not extend two classes in the base user controls The question is how can i access the properties defined in the Base class from within the user controls? • GWT combobox not displaying correctly

They look like a text field with the "Select a topic..." text. When you select the text it disappears and if you type a character and then delete it the options are shown (i.e. pull down is invoked) however, there is still no pull down arrow. Does anyone know what the issue might be? Or how I can investigate further? Is it possible to see the actual HTML the browser is getting, when I View Page Source I only get the landing page HTML. As an additional I also have a import com.google.gwt.user.client.ui.Grid that does not render correctly. It is in table format but has no grid lines or header bar etc. Cheers, James

• Can Qt's QWebView display programatically generated XML?

  Using Qt 4.6, I can dynamically add to an HTML page like this: ui->webView->page()->mainFrame()->documentElement().findFirst("body").appendInside("<i>some text</i>\n"); However, if I QWebView::load() an XML file, it displays it with the correct CSS styling (from an processing instruction), but doesn't show any changes when I do something like: ui->webView->page()->mainFrame()->documentElement().findFirst("lines").appendInside("<line>hello</line>\n"); Why is it treating them differently, and is there a way to modify an XML document in the same way I can an HTML one?

• New to C# and trying to use a global variable

  Is it possible to use global variables in C#? I'm coming from mainly a PHP background so variables are either accessible everywhere or just a global definition away. My main issue is I have a User class that I built myself to wrap around the current users table on my company's database. I am defining it in the MasterPage but can't seem to access it from the actual pages (I don't know if there's a better word to describe them but they are the pages that inherit the styles and format from the MasterPage) Any general tips or implementation practices for me? • When Intel/AMD plan to use new CPU sockets? [closed]

  It is very expensive always to use most modern hardware especially buying new mainboard if only a new CPU is desired. It would be much better if one knows whether and when major CPU producers plan to change CPU sockets. Do you know when it is planed to change sockets the next time? I am particularly interested in not buying Intel i7 CPU if a new CPU will be released soon with not compatible pins.

• clone of tseng et4000 extended mode font?

  Back in the day (day =~ 1994), the tseng et4000 video card had extended modes for the console under linux. There was a beautiful monospaced font (I think it was for 100x40 or 100x50, but my memory could be wrong). Anyone know a way to get said font for a modern computer (e.g., Mac OS X) or the history of the font, etc? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tseng_ET4000 has little info on this score.

• Viewing, building & debugging Borland C++ Builder project in Visual Studio 2010

  I would like to use VC2010 to handle a BCB 2006 project I have. I do not want to convert the code to VC since much UI will need to be ported. I just want to be able to view build & debug from VS IDE. Viewing: I assume once I create VS projects for the native BCB code viewing will be possible, although the UI editor will not. Building: I found the "C++ Native Multi-Targeting" option of VS, although I'm not sure on what to set the different options there to (Daffodil is mentioned as helpful although I'm not sure what the added value is over existing functionality). Debugging: not sure how to do this at all from within VS. There are some stand alone console tools that convert debug info files e.g. tds2pdb (wheres the documentation link?). If anyone has experience with such a task I would thank you for any advice.

• What is the most Linux friendly video card chipset/manufacturer on the market?

  I've wasted an absurd amount of time trying to get my nVidia card to function properly in Linux (Ubuntu & Fedora). I've decided to purchase a new video card that will "just work" with any Linux I throw at it. Making things even easier, I'm not a gamer, though I do appreciate some of the 3D or alpha blending effects seen in modern GUIs. What cards and/or manufacturers do you recommend for the maximum acceleration with minimum problems?

  I need suggestion for three layered architecture I am planning to implement. Scenario Am Working in ASP.NET c# 3.5 Environment. DLHelper: Methods to get data from database. DAL : Contains Methods which collects data from database with help of DLHelper classes. Most of the methods in this layer are not referencing any page level object, hence can be declared static. BL : Same as DAL Layer, most of the methods are not referencing any page other page level object, hence can be declared static. UI Layer: As per above scenario UI Layer call to BL Layer is like BLClass.Method - DALClass.Method Question I would like to know is this standardise way to do it. As per discussion with my co-worker, we should have corresponding object of BL/DAL layer. But am still looking for more convencing answer.
