How to implement menuitems that depend on current selection in WPF MVVM explorer-like application

I am new to WPF and MVVM, and I am working on an application utilizing both. The application is similar to windows explorer, so consider an app with a main window with menu (ShellViewModel), a tree control (TreeViewModel), and a list control (ListViewModel). I want to implement menu items such as Edit - Delete, which deletes the currently selected item (which may be in the tree or in the list). I am using Josh Smith's RelayCommand, and binding the menuitem to a DeleteItemCommand in the ShellViewModel is easy. It seems like implementing the DeleteItemCommand, however, requires some fairly tight coupling between the ShellViewModel and the two child view models (TreeViewModel and ListViewModel) to keep track of the focus/selection and direct the action to the proper child for implementation. That seems wrong to me, and makes me think I'm missing something. Writing a focus manager and/or selection manager to do the bookkeeping does not seem too hard, and could be done without coupling the classes together. The windowing system is already keeping track of which view has the focus, and it seems like I'd be duplicating code. What I'm not sure about is how I would route the command from the ShellViewModel down to either the ListViewModel or the TreeViewModel to do the actual work without making a mess of the code. Some day, the application will be extended to include more than two children, and I want the shell to be as ignorant of the children as possible to make that extension as painless as possible. Looking at some sample WPF/MVVM applications (Karl Shifflett's CipherText, Josh Smith's MVVM Demo, etc.), I haven't seen any code that does this (or I didn't understand it). Regardless of whether you think my approach is way off base or I'm just missing a small nuance, please share your thoughts and help me get back on track. Thanks!

Windows Form user control hosted in WPF - How to capture the leave event?

Hi, In my WPF application I'm hosting a custom Windows Form User Control together with other wpf controls. My custom user control is hosted in wpf using a WindowsFormsHost control. This custom user control contains (the parent so to speak) other custom win form controls (children controls). The children controls can be single or composite controls. How can I capture the leave event on a child control when the user navigates from the last child user control in the parent custom user control to a wpf user control? According to MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms751797.aspx) the leave event is not supported in following scenarios: Enter and Leave events are not raised when the following focus changes occur: 1. From inside to outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 2. From outside to inside a WindowsFormsHost control. 3. Outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 4. From a Windows Forms control hosted in a WindowsFormsHost control to an ElementHost control hosted inside the same WindowsFormsHost. Scenario 1 and 2 is exactly what I struggle with. Dependency isn't included in my assembly, although scope is "compile"

Hi! I have the following dependency specified in my project's pom: <dependency> <groupId>org.jboss.client</groupId> <artifactId>jbossall-client</artifactId> <scope>compile</scope> </dependency> My project itself has to be the child of another pom. And in that one, the following is defined: <dependency> <groupId>jboss</groupId> <artifactId>jbossall-client</artifactId> <version>4.2.2</version> <scope>provided</scope> <type>jar</type> </dependency> When I now assembly my program, it seems that the "provided" scope of the parent pom overrides the scope of my project, since the jbossall-client-jar is not included in my assembly. Although it seems illogical to me, maybe it's this feature taking effect here. Do you know a way to include the dependency in my assembly without touching the parent pom?

I looked at a few other examples of user auth and they were build using similar technique.

It runs fine from the command line and also interprets the 'cycle' argument fine. When it runs in cron it runs fine, however, the process never dies and while each process doesn't continue to cycle the system it does seem to be looping in some way due to the fact that it ups my system load very quickly. Casting to a struct from LPVOID - C

Hello, I am writing a simple console application which will allow me to create a number of threads from a set of parameters passed through the arguments I provide. DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunc(LPVOID threadData) { } I am packing them into a struct and passing them as a parameter into the CreateThread method and trying to unpack them by casting them to the same type as my struct from the LPVOID. I'm not sure how to cast it to the struct after getting it through so I can use it in the method itself, i've tried various combinations (Example attatched) but it won't compile. In my code some classes have large hierarchies. What is the recommended way of doing this? Cloning everything at each level without calling the base class seems wrong? There must be some neat solutions to this problem, what are they? Can I thank everyone for their answers. It was really interesting to see some of the approaches. I think it would be good if someone gave an example of a reflection answer for completeness. +1 awaiting!

addChild, etc. using NSTreeController and NSTreeNode (snow leopard)

I have a setup with an object (OTNodeDatum) (OT for OutlineTest) to be the represented object in NSTreeNode. NSTreeNode is the Class shown in the attributes page for NSTreeController. I have document based app, no core data. On MyDocument init, I set up content with an NSMutableArray containing one item, an NSTreeNode with a represented object which contains a single property (yes, name). Add button, Add Child button, Delete button, hooked up via interface builder to the NSTreeController add action, etc. It works up to a point. When I do an add, I get a new blank line which I can edit, but the inserted text goes away when I leave the cell. When I do a delete, things get deleted. When I do add child, nothing happens. I think I have to subclass either NSTreeNode, or NSTreeController to get the right behavior in terms of adding children and adding a new represented object in addition to adding a new tree node. IS this on the right track? If I subclass NSTreeController would I just override the add, addChild, to get the right thing to happen? And what could I mess up? I can't seem to find any guidance on this, although I've spent a long time looking. Thanks. John V

Looking at the query using Profiler, I do not see my addition to the insert command. Questions: 1) Why is my addition to the insert command not making its way to the sql being executed on the database? 2) Is there a simpler way to have my DataSet refreshed with the identity values of the inserted rows? 3) Should I use the OnRowUpdated callback to add my child records? ListView Final Column Autosize creates scrollbar

Hi There, I am implementing a custom control which derives from ListView. I would like for the final column to fill the remaining space (Quite a common task), I have gone about this via overriding the OnResize method: protected override void OnResize(EventArgs e) { base.OnResize(e); if (Columns.Count == 0) return; Columns[Columns.Count - 1].Width = -2; // -2 = Fill remaining space } or via another method: protected override void OnResize(EventArgs e) { base.OnResize(e); if (!_autoFillLastColumn) return; if (Columns.Count == 0) return; int TotalWidth = 0; int i = 0; for (; i < Columns.Count - 1; i++) { TotalWidth += Columns[i].Width; } Columns[i].Width = this.DisplayRectangle.Width - TotalWidth; } Edit: This works fine until I dock the ListView into a parent container and resize via that control. Every second time the control size shrinks (IE, drag the the border one pixel), I get a scroll bar on the bottom which can't move at all (not even one pixel). The result of which is when I drag the size of the parent I am left with a flickering scroll bar in the ListView, and a 50% chance it will be there when the dragging stops.

SL3 TreeView Not Programmatically Scrolling

I have a treeview in Silverlight 3. The treeview is bound to a observable collection - which contains a list of hierarchical data. When the page loads initially, all nodes, by default, in the treeview, are collapsed. I have functionality that allows a certain item in the treeview to be selected programmatically. The problem that I am running into is when an item is selected that isn't immediately visible (i.e. one or more parent nodes are collapsed). I programmatically expand them, but, when I try to programmatically scroll into view, so the user can see the selected item, it doesn't work. I looked into this further, and I believe that it has to do with the calculated viewport height for the scroll viewer. It almost seems like a timing issue, as, if the item's parent node is expanded, and then the item is programmatically selected, the code that scrolls the treeview into view for that selected treeview item works perfectly. Please refer to the extension method below that I am using to scroll the treeview into view. Any help or suggestions on how to correct this would be greatly appreciated. scrolling and css align with "right: 0px"

Hello, In an HTML page, if I align some <div>s with "right: 0px", they all look very nice, as I expect. However, if I make the browser window smaller and the horizontal scroll bar appears, when I scroll the page to the right, I see an unexpected white space (instead of the background colors of my <div>s). It seems that my <div>s are aligned relative to the visible area of the page. Hello, I try to map a one-to-many relation with cascade "remove" (jpa) and "delete-orphan", because I don't want children to be saved or persist when the parent is saved or persist (security reasons due to client to server (GWT, Gilead)) But this configuration doesn't work. When I try with cascade "all", it runs. Hide anchors using jQuery

I've created a dynamic page that, depending on the view type, will sometimes utilize the anchor tags and other times not. Essentially, I want to be able to control if on click the page jumps to the anchor. Is it possible to hide anchor tags using jQUery, so they are essentially removed? I need to be able to re-enable the anchors when necessary, and always show the current anchor in the browser's address bar. It seems to work in FireFox, but not in Internet Explorer. Win32 DLL importing issues (DllMain)

I have a native DLL that is a plug-in to a different application (one that I have essentially zero control of). Everything works just great until I link with an additional .lib file (links my DLL to another DLL named ABQSMABasCoreUtils.dll). This file contains some additional API from the parent application that I would like to utilize. I haven't even written any code to use any of the functions exported but just linking in this new DLL is causing problems. Specifically I get the following error when I attempt to run the program: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000025). Clock on OK to terminate the application. I believe I have read somewhere that this is typically due to a DllMain function returning FALSE. Also, the following message is written to the standard output: ERROR: Memory allocation attempted before component initialization I am almost 100% sure this error message is coming from the application and is not some type of Windows error. For what it's worth I have confirmed via "dumpbin" that the parent application imports the same DLL (ABQSMABasCoreUtils.dll), so it is being loaded no matter what. I have also tried delay loading this DLL in my DLL but that did not change the results.

Javascript permission denied - different port

Hi, I have a rails app running on port 3000. The page in question has an iframe and I need to resize it depending on the height of the content loaded in the iframe. <iframe id="ifrm_col3" name="ifrm_col3" frameborder="0" src="<%=invite_path(@invite.alias)%>" onload="util.resize_iframe('ifrm_col3');"></iframe> The resize function is here: util.resize_iframe = function(frame_id) { var h = document.getElementById(frame_id).contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight; document.getElementById(frame_id).height = h; } After the iframe loads, I see this error in FireBug: Error: Permission denied for <http://192.168.0.157> to get property Window.document from <http://192.168.0.157:3000>. Source File: http://192.168.0.157:3000/javascripts/application.js?1268327481 Line: 84 The src of iframe is a relative path, but I'm not sure why the port info from the parent page is not retained. Is there any workaround to this problem? I tried creating a function in the parent page and calling it from the iframe, but ran into the same issue. Due to extra features in the site, I need to stick to port 3000 for the rails app. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Database design and foreign keys: Where should they be added in related tables?

I have a relatively simple subset of tables in my database for tracking something called sessions. These are academic sessions (think offerings of a particular program). The tables to represent a sessions information are: sessions session_terms session_subjects session_mark_item_info session_marks All of these tables have their own primary keys, and are like a tree, in that sessions have terms, terms have subjects, subjects have mark items, etc. So each on would have at least its "parent's" foreign key. My question is, design wise is it a good idea to include the sessions primary key in the other tables as a foreign key to easily select related session items, or is that too much redundency? If I include the session foreign key (or all parent foreign keys from tables up the heirarchy) in all the tables, I can easily select all the marks for a session. As an example, something like SELECT mark FROM session_marks WHERE sessionID=... If I don't, then I would have to combine selects with something like WHERE something IN (SELECT... Which approach is "more correct" or efficient? Thanks in advance!

How to find/extract data from xml with jQuery

I'm trying to extract the StateLongName and StateShortName values from the xml below. I know there has to be a simple elegant way to do this with jQuery. <NewDataSet> <Table> <StateLongName>Alabama</StateLongName> <StateShortName>AL</StateShortName> </Table> <Table> <StateLongName>Alaska</StateLongName> <StateShortName>AK</StateShortName> </Table> ...elments removed for brevity </NewDataSet> Here's what I've tried. Load the xml from above into a Javascript variable name xml. Try #1 $(xml).find("TABLE").each(function() { var stateName = $(this).find("StateLongName").innerText; var stateCode = $(this).find("StateShortName").innerText; }); Try #1 doesn't find anything and never goes inside to load the stateName and stateCode variables. Try #2 $(xml).find("StateLongName").each(function() { var stateName = $(this).find("StateLongName").innerText; var stateCode = $(this).find("StateShortName").innerText; }); Try #2 does find matches, however the stateName and stateCode are left undefined.
