• CLI way of uninstalling a Windows update?

  Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

• iDrac6 Email Alert Problem

  I'm trying to setup the email alerts on the iDrac6 Express on an R610, but when i run the test it just says "Sending Failed". Platform Event Filter Alerts are enabled. The network setup is: 192.168.1.22/255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 SMTP: 192.168.1.1 Exim is listening 192.168.1.1 and is set to allow mail on 192.168/16. There's nothing in the exim logs about connections from the drac. Is there a way to get the drac to give more information about why it's sending failed?

  we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

  I am trying to get AVIDemux set up with the X264 codec using this tutorial. • Windows server 2008 can't uninstall FTP

  I'm trying to uninstall the old IIS6 FTP service on Windows Server 2008 so that I can install FTP 7.5. In server manager I clicked remove role services and uninstalled FTP and restarted. The Web Platform Installer 2.0 RC says FTP Service is still installed but it appears uninstalled in server manager. When I try to install FTP7.5 it says that it is incompatible with FTP and that I need to uninstall that first. Is there something else that I need to do to get rid of the old FTP service? I was wondering for the first error, what does "enable away mode" mean? for the second, what utilization percentage of CPU is reasonable? for the third, what is "PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM)"?   I'm working on a filesystem improving project, and found a paper says the cheating on benchmark, and it gives a solution that use VMs could help others to reproduce our result. And the question is, if I have made a specific vmware virtual machine, will it runs the same at different computer and platform? For example, I have a virtual machine which is 1G RAM, 4G HD and 2G one-core CPU. Will that runs the same at a qual-core 3G CPU and a 2.4G P4? What if the computer have 4G RAM? Will vmware use some buffer mechanism to improve performance? If that's true, does it means the VM runs on a 2G RAM host will slower than on a 4G host? Hope you can help me on that, or just told me where could I find the answer.

• Can't change (enable/disable) features on Windows 7

  I can't make any changes to Windows Features. Even if I just enter in Windows Features and press Ok I get: "An error has occured. Not all of the features were successfully changed." I noticed this while trying to install/uninstall IIS. If I try to install IIS from the Web Platform I get: [Windows package manager] The referenced assembly could not be found. Operation failed with 0x80073701 Any suggestions? EDIT: I have tried - Startup Repair. It says it has found problems but is unable to solve them - System restore (but didn't had an early enough restore point) :(

  I'm looking for an open source cross platform WYSIWYG editor that I can use to write documentation. I'm not looking for a web based solution - i.e. it should work without a web server, and I want to save my files directly to disk. The result could be any structured format, like Wiki markup, ReStructuredText, DocBook, or a small subset of HTML, ... But it's important, that Subversion diff can be used to see differences between the versions easily (this wouldn't work with .odt or .rtf files for example) I'm currently thinking about using Open Office, and saving the files as HTML, but is there a better solution?

• FireFox/NoScript: why has the NoScript icon disappeared?

  Why has the appearence of NoScript changed? Using Noscript in FireFox (Microsoft Windows): Until now there has been an icon (the S icon) in the lower right of the screen. But now there is an button instead with the text "Options". Left clicking this button seems to bring up the menu as right clicking the old icon. Can I restore the previous state? Is there an auto-update function in NoScript and if so could it have caused the change? If it exists can the auto-update function be disabled? Platform: FireFox 3.0.6, NoScript 1.9.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit, 8 GB RAM.

  Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

• How to run MS C++ 6.0 on Windows 7

  I have MS Windows C++ version 6.0 on XP. I'd like to move it to a Windows 7 platform but when I try to install it there I get some garbage about it not being compatible, proceed at your own risk etc. When I proceed, it (not surprisingly) doesn't work. Is there a way to convince these Microsoft tools to play nice with each other? I have Win7 home edition, but I would be willing to upgrade to Win7 Pro IF I knew it would work under the "XP emulation" mode. Failing both those options, what is the least expensive "upgrade" path for C++? I don't need a bunch of other junk, just the C++ compiler. The goal is to retire my XP system since currently the only reason I keep it is to compile C++ programs that eventually are run under Win7. Thanks, Hotei

• Solaris Administration Web GUI?

  I recently installed Solaris 11 x86 text install (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen) to be used as a file server running ZFS. I noticed that I'm given the bare minimum in terms of packages. Is there an official oracle web GUI for managing ZFS? I ran a netstat and it doesn't appear to have installed any webserver thats listening. I saw something from a couple years ago, but apparently it's not packaged or maintained anymore (https://blogs.oracle.com/talley/entry/manage_zfs_from_your_browser). I tried pkg install network-console, but it says that the package isn't available for my platform. Any ideas? I'd like to stick with Oracle Solaris instead of the open source alternatives, if possible.

• Ideas for campus Internet Login mechanism?

  Hello, I work at this university and I'm seeking an effective solution for an internet login mechanism. We have a leased-link at our campus, which is shared by both staff & students. All systems (desktops + laptops + handhelds) connect to the internal network via wifi and can then get onto the net. However, a local govt. regulation requires us to keep track of individual internet usage and hence we need a solution (pref. free / opensource) that'll enable us to implement some sort of an authentication mechanism once a user hooks onto the network. One requirement is that the software should be able to authenticate either against LDAP or some other custom user database (MySQL based) or both. Can anyone suggest any such software or mechanism? Most of our servers are Linux based... so something that runs off such a platform will be good. Thanks, m^e

• What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

  On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening.   Hello, I would like to track my $HOME dir with git. I've got many other git repos in other subdirs (eg $HOME/projects/repo_1 and so on), which shouldn't be tracked, since they already are. I have found git-home-history but it appears from the archive that the project is no longer actively developed. What approach do you recommended ? Is ghh mature enough? I am on a Mac but I am interested in cross platform solutions, too. • On boot firmware request for intel GMA 3100 chipset timing out

  I am currently in the process of installing a Gentoo linux box with a Vanilla 2.6.29-r5 kernel with gentoo-xen-kernel patches in order to run the Xen Hypervisor. After rebooting with the new kernel, the booting process seemed to hang on: [ 0.863005] platform microcode: firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-0f-07 [ 60.863442] Microcode Update Driver: v2.00-xen <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba Apparently the firmware request times out after 60 seconds (/sys/class/firmware/timeout) and booting just continues. I have done some research and have found that on RHEL-4 this problem was related to the mount of /sys changed and the firmware.agent hotplug script couldn't parse the line correctly. However I am having some difficulty tracking down how to fix this on Gentoo. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks

• How do I objectively measure an application's load on a server

  All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

• which NoSQL for billions of records [closed]

  There are plenty of discussions around NoSQL databases around and a lot of them are about data logging in the social media section. The problem I'm trying to solve falls more into the scientific computing section, where I have several 1000s of billions of pieces of information that I want to query with different a different criteria for each query. All data is at least a 4 dimensional space, which means I have a 3D location (x,y,z) and a time component - plus the value and unit. Say temperature at xyz and 10min in degree Celcius. A typical query result may contain several million results ... I have read about pretty much all NoSQL solutions being exceptionally fast for inserting records, but when it comes to querying them it's a different story. I'm leaning towards MongoDB for the implementation and platform for developing the necessary code since it is more closely related to the current solution using MySQL. Happy to be proven wrong though when it comes to the choice of the NoSQL solution.

The gui doesn't accommodate it and the MS command line tools seem incomplete (for example: dnscmd cannot edit a record, only create). Is there a third party tool out there I can use? Basically I just need to change one IP address to another. <vent It's frustrating that what would take a simple search and replace in Linux is this massive exercise under Windows.
