• Install Ubuntu side by side with Windows

  I'm trying to setup both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop on the same machine. I've partitioned the disk into 3 parts, so that I can have Windows Ubuntu Shared Partition for Files I've installed Windows 7 on the first partition (which created a small partition of 100MB for boot), so now I have 4 partitions on the disk which is all it can take. Now I am installing Ubuntu, and it's asking me whether I want to: Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 Replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu (No!) Something else I want the Ubuntu installation to go into the partition that I prepared for it. Should I choose "Something else"? If I do so -- will I be able to choose which OS to load at boot? Can anyone explain how "Ubuntu inside Windows" work? it says that it will allow me to choose which OS to load at boot, which is desired. UPDATE: When choosing "Something else" I see also an option for Device for Boot Loader Installation: /dev/sda -- the ssd disk itself /dev/sda1 -- the Windows 7 loader (100MB partition) /dev/sda4 -- which is one of the other partitions Which one should I choose there? • Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. • Any benefit of /home Ubuntu partition

  I want to have dual OS of Win8 & Ubuntu 12.10. Provided that Ubuntu can access ntfs partition of Windows but same can't be said about Windows this leads to a question mark on the significance of having /home partition while installing Ubuntu. As far as I know /swap & / are the two partitions directly used by Ubuntu to store programs, installation & stuff while the documents/media resides in /home. Now because Ubuntu releases are more frequent than Windows & updates needs backup & relate stuff, so I came to decision to not to use /home at all, rather keep all my documents/media in ntfs, which would be untouched while upgrading Ubuntu as Win updates are once in a decade! Is my thinking correct? If yes, what would be the minimum space I should allot to /home plus how much I should allot to / one must know that I plan to use heavy applications like Maple, Matlab & Sagemath on Ubuntu.

• Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit install alongside Windows 7

  I've tried installing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS alongside my Windows 7 OS, following the exact procedure given by the Ubuntu website and random other tutorials. I've tried with a LiveCD and with a USB stick but I always run into the same problem. When I'm at the screen where I'm allowed to select how I want to install Ubuntu ("alongside", "erase Windows 7", "something else"), the first option says "Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7" instead of "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7". From pretty much all tutorials I've seen, the tutorial says that the option should say "alongside". I click "inside" anyway, and Ubuntu doesn't install at all. Instead, my computer just reboots, and goes back to the Try Ubuntu or Install Now screen. This happens regardless of using a LiveCD or a USB stick. I've also tried manually resizing my partitions using "something else". Oddly, I see 4 sda partitions: /dev/sda type size used /dev/sda1 1mb unknown Windows 7 (loader) /dev/sda2 ntsf 208mb unknown Recovery Windows Environment (loader) /dev/sda3 ntsf ~752000mb unknown Recovery Windows Environment (loader) /dev/sda4 ~18000mb unknown I try resizing the largest partition, but some sort of internal error occurs and it doesn't let me resize my partitions. Any ideas on what's going on and how to solve it?

• trying to setup multiple primary partitions on ubuntu linux

  I currently have ubuntu desktop installed on a harddrive. I want to partition the harddrive so that I can reserve 30 gigs for ubuntu server and 30 gigs for ubuntu desktop. The drive has 300 gigs available. Right now I am booting from dvd drive and installing ubuntu server. I selected "Guided partitioning" and created a 30 gig primary partition of Ext4 journaling filesystem, set "yes, format it" for format partition and set bootable flag to on. I intend to use this 30 gig partition to hold ubuntu server and allow me to boot from it. Now I have two other partitions. They are both set to "logical", one is currently using 285.8 gigs and is using ext4 (when I try to set bootable flag to true, it gives a warning "You are trying to set the bootable flag on a logical partition. The bootable flag is only useful on the primary partitions"). More alarming it says "No existing file system was detected in this partition". Actually, Im thinking that this is the parittion that is supposed to be holding my current Ubuntu Desktop. And of course I want this to be bootable and be a primary partition, so I could dual boot from this and the server partition. Now the third partition is also set to logical and it is being used as swap area. My question is regarding that second partition. Its supposed to be a primary partition thats holding my existing ubuntu desktop edition. How do I switch it to primary and to make sure that its pointing to my existing desktop installation?

• What do each of the TTYs do?

  I know that alt+ctrl+F(1-6) take me to available command lines, and that F1 command line is used for debugging, and F8 is the GUI desktop, that what i know but today i noticed there in F7 that does nothing, it only displays some sort of log in message, and there is F(9-12) that just display black screen with blinking under scroll . can anyone enlighten me what those consoles do, are they for trouble shooting maybe? i use ubuntu netbook 10.10.

• Resized Ubuntu 14.04 partition will not boot

  First, a little background info: I intended to install Ubuntu alongside OS X, but I accidentally erased my entire hard drive and was left with Ubuntu alone. Yesterday, I finally tried to create a desperate partition and OS X. I successfully shrank my Ubuntu partition and created ~40 GB of free space. I used gparted to do this. At first I tried to use Internet Recovery to install OS X on the unallocated space I had created, but discovered I couldn't. I went back to gparted and created a FAT partition with that space. I'm pretty sure I actually did this using my Ubuntu partition on my hard drive (the one I had just shrunken), rather than the USB live boot I had used to shrink it. Therefore, at this point, I think my Ubuntu partition was still functioning properly. I went back to internet recovery and used disk utility to turn the FAT partition into a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) [HFS/HFS+] partition. I believe this is probably where the problem occurred. I successfully reinstalled OS X and found it to be fully functioning. However, when I tried to boot back into the Ubuntu partition all I got was a black screen with a little white cursor (it looks similar to a terminal screen/the Mac DFU mode, but I can't type anything into it. Is there anything I can do to repair my Ubuntu partition? If not, can I at least recover the data from it? Thank you for any help.

• How to join a Windows Domain an Map NEtwork Drives on Ubuntu Partition

  I just installed the current build for Ubuntu on a partition for my work computer. I am a novice when it comes to Linux/Ubuntu, which is why I installed it along side windows. I want to learn how to operate and use Ubuntu much more than I do now, so I figured installing it and trying to do day to day functions here would be a "Thrown into the pool with sharks" way to do it, and I like that way. I did however have a few questions: We are on a Domain in Windows, is there any way to join that domain using the Ubuntu partition? We Also have 16 mapped network drives. I don't actually need ALL of them mapped for Ubuntu, but is there a way to Map at least one of them to see/use here in Ubuntu. Outlook Corporate email, how can I sign in/use it while...well, you get the idea. As I said earlier, I am VERY new to Ubuntu, i've only played around with it a bit at home and never at the office. If you could simplify it down for me a bit, that would be great.

• Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

  I have a Ubuntu guest configured with two interfaces, eth0 is using NAT and works fine, I can access the net. The second interface eth1 is set to host only networking and VirtualBox has created a vboxnet0 virtual adapter on the host. I've configured vboxnet0 in VirtualBox adapter settings with the following: ip 192.168.21.20 subnet 255.255.255.0 Once the VM guest is running, ifconfig on OSX has vboxnet0 setup as: vboxnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00 inet 192.168.21.20 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.21.255 In the guest, eth0 is set to use DHCP, I've statically assigned eth1 to 192.168.21.20 (is this a mistake?): auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.21.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.21.0 broadcast 192.168.21.255 gateway 192.168.21.1 There is no device on 192.168.21.1 - what should I set my gateway to? • Upgrading Ubuntu to 9.04 breaks ATI video card driver, VESA and ati/radeon drivers

  I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, and it not only broke the ATI proprietary fglrx driver, but also the ability to use the VESA or open-source ati or radeon drivers. I have an ATI RV610 which is an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. I have Linux Kernel 2.6.27-14-generic and 2.6.28-13-generic. With fglrx, vesa, ati and radeon, the Xserver hangs the machine as soon as it starts by invoking X or startx, which is seen by observing that caps lock doesn't work. There's nothing useful in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, no errors at all. This is with either kernel. When I download a new proprietary driver from ATI, I install it successfully on kernel 2.6.27, and it doesn't hang when X starts up, but it just shows a blank screen and does nothing. I also can't CTRL+ALT+Backspace out of X at this point. In all the years I've used ATI's Linux drivers, this has happened almost every time I've upgraded my kernel, but it's been fixable with much effort. This time I'm really stuck. Does anyone know how to fix these problems?

• Ubuntu virtual memory caches suck up memory

  Hey all, I've got an Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit server that seems to use up all available memory. According to my munin graphs, almost all of the memory used up is in the swap cache, cache, and slab cache. (I take this to mean virtual memory caches, am I right in assuming this?) Once memory usage approaches 100%, some (although not all) system services such as SSH become sluggish and unresponsive. After rebooting the system, performance and memory usage become normal for a time. Some interesting tidbits: The system runs Apache 2, MySQL, Munin, and sshd. The memory usage spikes happen at the same time every night (at 10 PM sharp.) There appears to be nothing in the crontab for any of the users, and nothing in /etc/cron.d/* out of the ordinary, let alone something that would occur at 10 PM. My question is, how do I figure out what is causing the memory suckage? I've tried the usual utilities (e.g. ps, top, etc) but I can't seem to find anything unusual. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

• Ubuntu software stack to mimic Active Directory auth

  I'm going to have an Ubuntu 11.10 box in a customer's data center running a custom webapp. The customer will not have ssh access to the box, but will need authentication and authorization to access the webapp. The customer needs to have the option of either pointing the webapp at something that we've installed locally on the machine, or to use an Active Directory server that they have. I plan on using a standard "users belong to groups; groups have sets of permissions; the webapp requires certain permissions to respond" auth setup. What software stack can I install locally that will allow an easy switch to and from an Active Directory server, while keeping the configuration as simple as possible (both for me and the end customer)? I would like to use as much off-the-shelf software for this as possible; I do not want to be in the business of keeping user passwords secure. I could see handling the user/group/permission relationships myself if there is not a good out-of-the-box solution (but that seems highly unlikely). I will accept answers in the form of links to "here is what you need" pages, but not "here is what Kerberos does" unless that page also tells me if it's required for my use case (essentially, I know that AD can speak Kerberos, but I can't tell if I need it to, or if I can just use LDAP, or...).

  Hi, By default Ubuntu doesn't mount internal NTFS hard drives automatically. A fstab solution not working properly, because of conflicts with the "intelligent" mount system. If I add my hd in fstab and reboot - it will be mounted. But if I go to nautilus, open places panel and click eject button (unmount) and than click on hd again to mount it, I will get an error. • Ubuntu NBR karmic boot freezes at fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

  Hi all, I have a netbook (emachine e250 - equivalent to an acer aspire one) and I have Ubunutu NBR 9.10 installed on it. Every other cold boot freezes at the following error message: "fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16" There is no disk activity, no activity what so ever. I have left the machine sit for over an hour and nothing. It takes a couple of hard resets to be able to boot properly. Once it boots everything works great (wireless, suspend/resume, etc.)! I have spent the last couple of weeks researching the problem and the only thing that seems to work is setting nolapic in the boot string in grub - it boots every time. Unfortunately, nolapic disables the second core and causes problems with suspend resume. At first I thought it was an fsck problem with the first partition on the hard disk as it is a hidden ntfs partition containing the windows xp recover information. So in /etc/fstab I set the partition so that it would be ignored by fsck. This didn't seem to do anything. I have these partitions: /dev/sda1 - an ntfs recovery partition /dev/sda2 - /boot /dev/sda3 - swap /dev/sda5 - / /dev/sda6 - /home I am running kernel version 2.6.31-19-generic and have all the patches (as indicated by update manager). I also have no splash screen so I can see the boot progress. I have only been using NBR since January, I have been using Ubuntu on my desktop since last June (2009-06). What logs should I be looking at? Is there a log for failed boots? Thanks, Troy

  I know this is a common problem usually having to do with apache or another service already running on port 80 and I have done a lot of searching and running netstat and still have not figured out why I am getting this error. I rebuilt my slice, did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and setup nginx + uwsgi. It worked and I was able to see my Django site. I then installed Postgres8.4 and the rest of the stack needed for Geodjango from this link.   I am attempting to use ssh-agent on Ubuntu 13.10 so that I will not have to enter my passphrase to unlock a key every time I want to use ssh or git. • Preseeding Ubuntu partman recipe using LVM and RAID

  I'm trying to preseed Ubuntu 12.04 server installation and created a recipe that would create RAID 1 on 2 drives and then partition that using LVM. Unfortunately partman complains when creating LVM volumes saying there no partitions in recipe that could be used with LVM (in console it complains about unusable recipe). The layout I'm after is RAID 1 on sdb and sdc (installing from USB stick so it takes sda) and then use LVM to create boot, root and swap. The odd thing is that if I change the mount point of boot_lv to home the recipe works fine (apart from mounting in wrong place), but when mounting at /boot it fails I know I could use separate /boot primary partition, but can anybody tell me why it fails.
