• Is it possible to format ps RSS (memory) output to be more human friendly?

  Executing ps ux returns a nice list of process information, easy to grep through or watch. However, there doesn't seem to be much flexibility in the memory usage output; the RSS (resident set size) is printed in kB, which for large processes is hard to read (especially at a glance), and %MEM gives 100 × RSS / system_memory. The du utility has a lovely -h flag which prints space in a more user friendly fashion. I have not been able to find anything equivalent for ps. Is there a special formatting trick that can accomplish this?

• What would cause JBoss to take up 4 more GB of memory than what is allocated?

  Relevant part of the start up line: java -server -Xms10G -Xmx10G -XX:PermSize=1G -XX:MaxPermSize=1G This instance ended up taking up 16GB of memory and 10GB of swap before killing the server. Any ideas on what could cause that? This is the only major application running on a RedHat system with 16GB RAM and 10GB swap.

• Need help with testdisk output

  I had (note the past tense) an ubuntu 12.04 system with separate partitions for the base and /home directories. It started acting wonky, so I decided to do a reinstall with 12.10, intending just to do a reinstall to the base partition. After several seconds, I realize that the installer was repartitioning the drive and reinstalling, so I pulled the power cord. I'm now trying to recover as much as I can with testdisk, but it seems that testdisk is finding 100 unique partitions when I run it - they mostly tend to be HFS+ or solaris /home (which I think is just an ext4; I've never had solaris on the machine). I've pasted an abbreviated version of the testdisk output below (first ~100 lines, and then ~100 lines from the middle of the output). Is there a way to combine or recreate the partitions and then data recovery, or some other way maximize what I can recover (ideally as much of the file system as possible)? I really only care about what was in the /home directory - I'd rather not use photorec since I don't have another 2 TB HD lying around to recover to. • 11.10 update manager upgrade to 12.04 fails

  Currently using 11.10 on a new dell vostro 2420 laptop and wanted to upgrade to 12.04.01lte. Using the update manager and clicking the upgrade option first came up with a 'failure to authenticate' message and after a restart of the computer I click the upgrade and it will download 2 files then the popup closes and no further prompts/screens come up. Is there some issue with my laptop that will prevent an upgrade? Or should I just wait and try the upgrade again another day?

  With my first experiments I noticed that OpenCL is a good technology but often hampered by the X86 architecture and finding a mid-range VGA driven by a low-end chipset is not that unusual in the real world scenarios, sometimes this can happen with some high-end VGA too. Are there some caching techniques? Something that can bypass this inconvenience in some ways. The amount of dedicated memory on today's VGA is usually high, it's possible to use this memory to create some kind of buffer with instructions.

  We all know that if you want to completely delete files from HDD, you have to use a special erase algorithm in order to make it impossible to read it back. But what with the memory cards? Do they need the same algorithms to ensure that no one could read it back? (it has a completely different structure to store data, and I don't know what the case here with secure delete)
