• Chrome to download Gmail attachments to a different place

  I'm using Chrome and Gmail. When I download stuff from the web, Chrome automatically puts it in Downloads, which is fine. However, I'm aware that everything I download from Gmail is in the cloud anyway and so I don't really need it taking up space on my hard drive as well. Is there a way to have Gmail attachements automatically download to a different folder, say, Downloads\Gmail? That way I could regularly purge the ones that won't be useful for a while. (Yes, I'm aware that Word documents and the like often get changed after they arrive, I'm more focused on images, pdfs, and zip files.)

• Mathematica & J/Link: Memory Constraints?

  I am doing a computing-intensive benchmark using Mathematica and its J/Link Java interface. The benchmark grinds to a halt if a memory footprint of about 320 MB is reached, since this seems to be the limit and the garbage collector needs more and more time and will eventually fail. The Mathematica function ReinstallJava takes the argument command line. I tried to do ReinstallJava[CommandLine -> "java -Xmx2000m ..."] but Mathematica seems to ignore the -Xmx option completely. How can I set the -Xmx memory option for my java program? Where does the limit of 320 MB come from? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• KVM guest storage difference with NBD and NFS

  I am setting up my own little private cloud for my own use maybe for a project or to. I am using linux kvm on debian 6. I have 3 servers 2 of them for compute nodes and 1 storage node. I would I have already installed kvm made a few test machines got my networking setup. I have 2 nics on each server 1 nic is for web traffic other nic is for network traffic. My first Idea was to use NFS for storing the guest machines which can range in size, maybe 8gb maybe 100gb, it just depends. I was doing have heard of nbd before seems like it could work but I dont know what the performance differences are and if it will effect my enviroment, nfs looks like it will be easier to use.

• Partially parse C++ for a domain-specific language

  I would like to create a domain specific language as an augmented-C++ language. I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases. Do you know about similar projects? And if you attempted to do so, what tools would you use? What would be the main pitfalls? Would you have recommendations in term of syntax?

• Write but not delete

  Hi, We are using glusterfs for our cloud storage needs. Since the partition is open to many servers, we would like to disable file deletion as we don't delete or overwrite any file. Glusterfs does not have ACL, so I need to implement this solution outside of the glusterfs. Perhaps I can mount the disks read and write only (with disabling deletion), but could not find any solution. Setfacl etc. does not work on the partition. How can we disable file deletion -at least- on the client machines? Thanks,

  I try to find any kind of automatic management services. What I mean: I purchase dedicated server. Login SSH and install any kind of Daemon. Control security, tune LAMP stack, monitoring etc. from dashboard. Never touch SSH and login in to the server. Pay every month for this service. I already find few providers, but they support only EC2 cloud servers. If you can suggest me anything for dedicated machines? If not- I need to hire anyone for 5h Administrator and 715h "Box-Watcher" every month :|

• Is disabling password login for SSH the same as deleting the password for all users?

  I have a cloud server with only a root user. I SSH to it using RSA keys only. To make it more secure, I wanted to disable the password feature. I know that this can be done by editing the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and changing PermitRootLogin yes to PermitRootLogin without-password. I was wondering if simply deleting the root password via passwd -d root would be the equivalent (assuming I do not create more users or new users have their passwords deleted too). Are there any security issues with one approach verses the other?

• How much RAM used by Python dict or list?

  My problem: I am writing a simple Python tool to help me visualize my data as a function of many parameters. Each change in parameters involves a non-trivial amount of time, so I would like to cache each step's resulting imagery and supporting data in a dictionary. But then I worry that this dictionary could grow too large over time. Most of my data is in the form of Numpy arrays. My question: How would one go about computing the total number of bytes used by a Python dictionary. The dictionary itself may contain lists and other dictionaries, each of which contain data stored in Numpy arrays. Ideas?

  I work at Coscend, a cloud and communications software product company. We have built a Web portal-based collaboration platform that we would like to host on five different Windows- and Linux-based servers in different hosting environments that run Web servers. Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Out team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? (3) Can these JavaScript modules be made portable and re-usable object modules for different environments and instances? The portal is written in JavaScript that is embedded in HTML5 and padded with CSS3. Other technologies include Flash, Flex. Databases used are PostgreSQL and MySQL.

• Mac terminal: Resource temporarily unavailable

  I'm getting an error message in the Mac Terminal when I try to run several different processes. I did some googling and looking on this site, and found out that it might be related to having too many processes running at one time. However, I'm getting these error messages when I only have a few windows open (much fewer than I was accustomed to having). Looking in activity Monitor, my %User number is at around 25%, and the %System number is around 15%. In the past, I have had both much much higher (until the people at the Apple store told me to keep an eye on it). • How long does it take in practice to warm up large in-memory databases?

  Companies such as Peak Hosting are offering 64 core machines with 512Gb RAM for $2K/month. This is a very interesting choice for in-memory databases such as Memcached/Redis as well as databases whose performance degrades rapidly when the data & indexes don't fit in RAM, such as MongoDB. My main concern with monster machines such as these is the time it takes to warm up an in-memory database. In my experience, theoretical metrics, e.g., that SATA can load 100Mb/sec, fall short of what happens in practice. Even at that rate, 100Mb/sec means that loading up 512Gb RAM machine from SATA disks can take over 1 1/2 hours (!). I am looking for real-world reports of warm-up times for machines with very large memory. Please, share details of the software on the machine, data size, storage configuration, e.g., SATA or SSD, network, hosting/cloud provider, if relevant, etc.

• Where does Skype save its chat history & contacts?

  I'm aware that there is a main.db file that is stored in a Windows directory. On XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user>\Application Data\Skype\<username> But I just downloaded Skype onto my Android and noticed that all chats are sync'd. So to me, this suggests that the main.db file is not the only storage being used (because it is obviously not on my phone). Are contacts and chat history stored in my online Skype account? Does anyone know where I can find more information about this? I read this thread: Does skype automatically save chat history to the cloud? And how do you explain the sync'd chats?

• Is there any Application Server Frameworks for other languages/platforms than JavaEE and .NET?

  I'm a CS student and has rare experience from the enterprise software industry. When I'm reading about enterprise software platforms, I mostly read about these two: Java Enterprise Edition, JavaEE .NET and Windows Communication Foundation By "enterprise software platforms" I mean frameworks and application servers with support for the same characteristics as J2EE and WCF has: [JavaEE] provide functionality to deploy fault-tolerant, distributed, multi-tier Java software, based largely on modular components running on an application server. WCF is designed in accordance with service oriented architecture principles to support distributed computing where services are consumed by consumers. Clients can consume multiple services and services can be consumed by multiple clients. Services are loosely coupled to each other. Is there any alternatives to these two "enterprise software platforms"? Isn't any other programming languages used in a bigger rate for this problem area? I.e Why isn't there any popular application servers for C++/Qt?

• Avaliable parallel technologies in .Net

  I am new to .Net platform. I did a search and found that there are several ways to do parallel computing in .Net: Parallel task in Task Parallel Library, which is .Net 3.5. PLINQ, .Net 4.0 Asynchounous Programming, .Net 2.0, (async is mainly used to do I/O heavy tasks, F# has a concise syntax supporting this). I list this because in Mono, there seem to be no TPL or PLINQ. Thus if I need to write cross platform parallel programs, I can use async. .Net threads. No version limitation. Could you give some short comments on these or add more methods in this list? Thanks.

• What's the fastest way to get directory and subdirs size on unix using Perl?

  I am using Perl stat() function to get the size of directory and its subdirectories. I have a list of about 20 parent directories which have few thousand recursive subdirs and every subdir has few hundred records.   I am looking a way to establish dev machine on the cloud. I want to have access for development from different places. I don't want to play with sync brunch and so on. It would be Lubuntu with 1G or 512M memory and I want to have way to setup my image. What I have found in the current moment: Amazon EC2 service Azure Virtual Machines I am pretty sure that there should be more services like this. I hope to find one specified for this purpose. I have experience to work in such way and I like it. Unfortunately it was server of certain company for projects of this company and I can't use it for my private aims. • Gui for viewing Apache headers

  Is there any GUI for viewing Apache headers which are being served by a chain of Reverse Proxy Servers. I have a cloud which uses a few Proxy Servers in between the client and actual server which has to serve the original request. All servers are Unix Servers. And if there is a problem which I do not get a clue to then to be able to post them here downloading and doing an ftp of those headers with all the logs , loging in each time to each proxy server and Opening the browser and exporting the X display to some remote server each time from the chain and then observing HTTP_RESPONSES and checking the request from each of those servers and then posting log with configuration and response takes at least 2-3 hours to type an email. Is there a shorter way to do so?

• All MySQL Databases lost overnight

  After a call from a customer to say that his website is down, I find that MySQL on our RackSpace Cloud Windows 2008 server was not running. I restarted MySQL but got the 'Access denied for user' error in the browser for all websites with MySQL database. When I look in MySql Server 5.5/data there are no folders other than mysql and performance_schema. It appears all the databases and data have been wiped. Does anyone know what might have happened and where the data has gone? To top that I just found this server is missing from our backup service. ps appears to be after windows update at 4:01 this morning.

• intermittent SSH with ssh_exchange_identification error

  My ssh connection to my server works every 30 min for around 10 min. Things that I figure out that might be the problem: The server is underload (it is a database server), but on those spare moments that I can connect, it is still under the same load, which doesnt make sense. The server is a ubuntu, and the consolekit was using a lot of virtual memory. Restarted the consolekit and it seems to be using a right amount of memory now. It is not the host alows or deny. Those are setup properly. It is not a firewall problem. Those settings were working and the same settings are working for other similar machines. It is on the ec2. Amazon cloud.

• How can I use Amazon's API in PHP to search for books?

  I'm working on a Facebook app for book sharing, reviewing, and recommendations. I've scoured the web, searched Google using every search phrase I could think of, but I could not find any tutorials on how to access the Amazon.com API for book information. I signed up for an AWS account, but even the tutorials on their website didn't help me one bit. They're all geared toward using cloud computing for file storage and processing, but that's not what I want. I just want to access their API to search info on books. Kind of like how http://openlibrary.org/ does it, where it's a simple URL call to get information on a book (but their databases aren't nearly as populated as Amazon's). Why is it so hard to find the information I need on Amazon's AWS site? If anybody could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

• Easiest way to keep SSRS child elements in the same relative position when the parent is re-positioned?

  I am trying to revise the layout of an SSRS report where I have several textboxes that are child elements of a rectangle. When I reposition the parent rectangle down by x, all of the child textboxes maintain the same absolute position. Their "Location" (defined relative to the parent) decreases by x. I then need to reposition the child textboxes. Additionally, if any of these ever has a negative "Location" then the parent rectangle is then repositioned back up by x. What is the easiest way to move everything in unison? I can Control-click everything and then drag them or use the arrow keys, but I want to position everything with precision and the "Location" field in the Properties window disappears when selecting more than one item. Is there a way I can avoid individually computing and typing in every "Location" value every time I have a small layout change? I am using SSRS (11.0.3360.12) within the Visual Studio 2012 Shell.   I need a solution to store images (1 billion) which users will upload to a website via PHP or Javascript upload (website will have 1 billion page views a month using Linux Debian distros) assuming 20 photos per user maximum (10 thumbnails of size 90px by 90px and 10 large, script resized images of having maximum width 500px or maximum height 500px depending on shape of image, meaning square, rectangle, horizontal, vertical etc). Assume this to be a LEMP-stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP) social-media or social-matchmaking type application whose content will be text and images. Since everyone knows storing tons of images (website users uploaded images in this case) are bad inside a single directory or NFS etc, please explain all the details about the architecture and configuration of the entire setup of storage solution, to store 1 billion images on any method you recommend (no third-party cloud storage like S3 etc. It has to be within the private data center using our own hardware and resources.). The solution has to include both the storage solution and organizing the images uploaded by users. How will we organize the users images if a single user will not have more than 20 images (10 thumbs and 10 large of having either width or height 500px)? Please consider that this has to be organized in a structural way so we can fetch a single user's images via PHP/Javascript or API programmatically through some type of user's unique identifier(s).

With Windows Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Windows Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Windows Azure table storage. 4. In the additional namespace imports import the same three namespaces mentioned above. 5. Then we need to provide following details. a. Table storage account name and shared key. b. DataServiceContext implementing class in your code. c.
