  • Simple MVVM Walkthrough – Refactored

    JR has put together a good introduction post into MVVM pattern. I love kick start examples that serve the purpose well. And even more than that I love examples that also can pass the real world projects check. So I took the sample code and refactored it slightly for a few aspects that a lot of developers might raise a brow. Michael has mentioned model (entity) visibility from view. I agree on that. A few other items that don’t settle are using property names as string (magical strings) and Saver class internal casting of a parameter (custom code for each Saver command). Fixing a property names usage is a straight forward exercise – leverage expressions. Something simple like this would do the initial job: class PropertyOf<T> { public static string Resolve(Expression<Func<T, object>> expression) { var member = expression.Body as MemberExpression; return member.Member.Name; } } With this, refactoring of properties names becomes an easy task, with confidence that an old property name string will not get left behind.   • SharePoint Content and Site Editing Tips

    A few content management and site editing tips for power users on this bacon flavoured unicorn morning. The theme here is keep it clean!Write "friendly" email addressesRemember it's human beings reading your content. So seeing something like "If you have questions please send an email to [email protected]" breaks up the readiblity. Instead just do the simple steps of writing the content in plain English and going back, highlighting the name and insert a link (note: you might have to prefix the link with mailto:[email protected]). It makes for a friendlier looking page and hides the ugliness that are sometimes in email addresses.Use friendly column and list namesThis is a big pet peeve of mine. When you first create a column or list with spaces the internal name is changed. The display name might be "My Amazing List of Animals with Large Testicles" but the internal (and link) name becomes "My_x00x20_Amazing_x00x20_List_x00x20_of_x00x20_Animals_x00x20_with_x00x20_Large_x00x20_Testicles". What's worse is if you create a publishing page named "This Website is Fueled By a Dolphin's Spleen". Not only is it incorrect grammar, but the apostrophe wreaks havoc on both the internal name for the list (with lots of crazy hex codes) as well as the hyperlink (where everything is uuencoded). Instead create the list with a distinct and compact name then go back and change it to whatever you want. The end result is a better formed name that you can both script and access in code easier.Keep your Views CleanWhen you add a column to a list or create a new list the default is to add it to the default view. Do everyone a favour and don't check this box! The default view of a list should be something similar to the Title field and nothing else. Keep it clean. If you want to set a defalt view that's different, go back and create one with all the fields and filtering and sorting columns you want and set it as default. It's a good idea to keep the original AllItems.aspx (note the lack of space in the filename!) easy and unfiltered. It's also a good idea to keep your column count down in views. Don't let every column be added by default and don't add every column just because you can. Create separate views for distinct responsibilities and try to keep the number of columns down to a single screen to prevent horizontal scrolling.Simple NavigationThe Quick Launch is a great tool for navigating around your site but don't use the default of adding all lists to it. Uncheck that box and keep navigation simple. Create custom groupings that make sense so if you don't have a site with "Documents and Lists" but "Reports and Notices" makes more sense then do it. Also hide internal lists from the Quick Launch. For example, if most users don't need to see all the lookup tables you might have on a site don't show them. You can use audience filtering on the Quick Launch if you want to hide admin items from non-admin users so consider that as an option.Enjoy!

  • MVC2 and MVC Futures causing RedirectToAction issues

    I've been trying to get the strongly typed version of RedirectToAction from the MVC Futures project to work, but I've been getting no where. Below are the steps I've followed, and the errors I've encountered. Any help is much appreciated. I created a new MVC2 app and changed the About action on the HomeController to redirect to the Index page. Return RedirectToAction("Index") However, I wanted to use the strongly typed extensions, so I downloaded the MVC Futures from CodePlex and added a reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc to my project. I addded the following "import" statement to the top of HomeContoller.vb Imports Microsoft.Web.Mvc I commented out the above RedirectToAction and added the following line: Return RedirectToAction(Of HomeController)(Function(c) c.Index()) So far, so good. However, I noticed if I uncomment out the first (non Generic) RedirectToAction, it was now causing the following compile error: Error 1 Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'RedirectToAction' can be called with these arguments: Extension method 'Public Function RedirectToAction(Of TController)(action As System.Linq.Expressions.Expression(Of System.Action(Of TController))) As System.Web.Mvc.RedirectToRouteResult' defined in 'Microsoft.Web.Mvc.ControllerExtensions': Data type(s) of the type parameter(s) cannot be inferred from these arguments. Specifying the data type(s) explicitly might correct this error. Extension method 'Public Function RedirectToAction(action As System.Linq.Expressions.Expression(Of System.Action(Of HomeController))) As System.Web.Mvc.RedirectToRouteResult' defined in 'Microsoft.Web.Mvc.ControllerExtensions': Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to 'System.Linq.Expressions.Expression(Of System.Action(Of mvc2test1.HomeController))'. Becuase I thought this might be some VB issue, I created a new MVC2 project using C# and tried the same as above. I added the following "using" statement to the top of HomeController.cs using Microsoft.Web.Mvc; This time, in the About action method, I could only manage to call the non-generic RedirectToAction by typing the full commmand as follows: return Microsoft.Web.Mvc.ControllerExtensions.RedirectToAction<HomeController>(this, c => c.Index()); Even though I had a "using" statement at the top of the class, if I tried to call the non-generic RedirectToAction as follows: return RedirectToAction<HomeController>(c => c.Index()); I would get the following compile error: Error 1 The non-generic method 'System.Web.Mvc.Controller.RedirectToAction(string)' cannot be used with type arguments What gives? It's not like I'm trying to do anything out of the ordinary. It's a simple vanilla MVC2 project with only a reference to the Futures assembly. I'm hoping that I've missed out something obvious, but I've been scratching my head for too long, so I figured I'd seek some assisstance. If anyone's managed to get this simple scenario working (in VB and/or C#) could they please let me know what, if anything, they did differently? Thanks!

  • ASP.NET MVC - Pass array object as a route value within Html.ActionLink(...)

    I have a method that returns an array (string[]) and I'm trying to pass this array of strings into an Action Link so that it will create a query string similar to: /Controller/Action?str=val1&str=val2&str=val3...etc But when I pass new { str = GetStringArray() } I get the following url: /Controller/Action?str=System.String%5B%5D So basically it's taking my string[] and running .ToString() on it to get the value. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • cakephp routing problem, plugin routing works but not others

    I'm having a strange routing problem with a site I just uploaded, and I've made a number of changes to test what's happening. It doesn't make any sense. My setup is: - I'm using one plugin, which I've included all the routing in the routes.php file. - I've also included the routes for two other controllers, 'events' and 'updates' they look like this: Router::connect('/login', array('plugin' = 'pippoacl', 'controller' = 'users', 'action' = 'login')); Router::connect('/logout', array('plugin' = 'pippoacl', 'controller' = 'users', 'action' = 'logout')); Router::connect( '/events/', array( 'controller' = 'events', 'action' = 'index')); Router::connect('/updates', array('controller' = 'updates', 'action' = 'index')); What happens when I try to get to 'events' is that I get an error message saying: "Not Found Error: The requested address '/Events' was not found on this server." I've checked the database and it's accessible, through the plugin's model/controller/view. I've also made sure the model/controllers for 'events' and 'updates' are there. Can anyone tell me how to trouble shoot this? Thanks, Paul

  • NHibernate.MappingException (no persister for) weirdness

    The weird part being that I have other tests that validate the mapping and even the method being called (Nhib session.SaveOrUpdate) that run just fine. The entire exception is below. Here is some debug output from a test that does work: Item type: Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 007-00-056 ATM Machine Replacement Is transient: True Id: 0 NHibernate: INSERT INTO Projects (Code, Description) VALUES (@p0, @p1); select insert_rowid();@p0 = '007-00-056', @p1 = 'ATM Machine Replacement' Here is the same debug output before the exception: Item type: Smack.ConstructionAdmin.Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 006-00-023 Refinish Casino Chairs Is transient: True Id: 0 The two tests are different in that the one that works is just testing the repository, and saving in memory test data. The failing one is saving data that has been converted from a legacy db (which has it's own session). The repository is also a replacement design for a different IProjectRepsitory that worked fine doing this, so the new repository is also a likely suspect here. Does anyone see what I'm missing or have some questions to narrow it down?     I have a WIX installer that executes Custom Actions over the course of install. When I run the WIX installer, and it encounters its first Custom Action, the installer fails out, and I receive an error in the MSI log as follows: Action start 12:03:53: LoadBCAConfigDefaults.   • SSRS 2008: is it possible to make a report parameter NOT query-based for some linked report?

    I suspect the answer is no, but here goes.. I'm using the WebForms Report Viewer on a public-facing website to allow users to report on themselves or their users (if the user is an admin user). A report has a parameter called Users where an admin can pick a user from the list and generate a report from it. Mundane users can also view this report, but I programmatically create a linked report for each user and set the UserID value to their ID so they can only view themselves. This works well except that the UserID parameter is query-based, and not every user is visible in the list using default settings (the user list is based off date range parameters can provide, and only users we consider 'active' during the date range are visible). This is blowing up for mundane users that are not active for the default date range (which is the previous month). I suspect the flow of execution is something like this: Report loads with default parameters The linked report rules are now applied and the value of the UserID is overridden with the ID in the linked report UserID field is now hidden to prevent the user from changing it SSRS can't find the UserID default value in the query results (that I didn't even want it to run) so it displays an error The 'UserID' parameter is missing a value Through some testing I've found a perfect correlation between users not inside the default date range and users who can't view the report. Can anyone suggest a way to make the report usable for those users that aren't in the default list? The reports are created programmatically so I do have a fair bit of control over the situation. I would love to simply be able to mark a parameter in a linked report as no longer being query-based, but those properties are all read-only. I really, really don't want to have to create duplicate reports to accommodate these users but I'm at a bit of a loss right now. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The boot sequence gets executed this way: foreach (var step in bootSequence) { _status.Update(step.Message); step.Do(); } _status denotes an instance of my XAML splash screen window containing a progress bar and a label for status information. Its Update() method is defined as follows: public void Update(string status) { int value = ++_updateSteps; Update(status, value); } private void Update(string status, int value) { var dispatcherOperation = Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( DispatcherPriority.Background, (ThreadStart) delegate { lblStatus.Content = status; progressBar.Value = value; }); dispatcherOperation.Wait(); } In the main this works, the steps get executed and the splash screen shows the progress. But I observed that the splash screen for some reasons doesn't update its content for all steps. This is the reason I called the Dispatcher async and wait for its completion. But even this didn't help. Has anyone else experienced this or some similar behaviour and has some advice how to keep the splash screen's update in sync with the execution of the boot sequence steps? I know that the users will unlikely notice this behaviour, since the splash screen is doing something and the application starts after booting is completed. I am trying to setup reverse proxy for IIS6 using IIRF so content is accessible via http: //bamboo. It seems that I set it ip correctly, and I can retrieve Status page.   • How do I handle the browser's "share page" intent in android?

    I read here ( http://androidlittle.blogspot.com/2009/08/intent-filter-for-share-link.html ) what intent-filter is required to handle the "share link" intent that the android web browser sends. I have placed this inside an block in my AndroidManifest.xml like so: <activity android:name=".ShareLink"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.SEND" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> <data android:mimeType="text/plain" /> </intent-filter> <meta-data/> </activity> I cannot for the life of me get this to be triggered though. When I share a link in the android browser, the emulator log shows it's creating a chooser intent, but doesn't give the details of the intent the chooser is acting on. No chooser window pops up, and the intent gets handled by the SMS application. I have also tried kicking off the intent manually: adb shell am start -D -a android.intent.action.SEND -c android.intent.category.DEFAULT -t text/plain -d http://google.com/ but the response I get is: Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.SEND cat=[android.intent.category.DEFAULT] dat=http://google.com/ typ=text/plain } Error: Activity not started, unable to resolve Intent { act=android.intent.action.SEND cat=[android.intent.category.DEFAULT] dat=http://google.com/ typ=text/plain flg=0x10000000 } Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? My main (launcher) activity works fine, so I assume there is no issue with installation on the emulator.

Required? Is there a clearer way to achieve the same behaviour?

    I have created a new ActionFilter for an ASP.NET MVC application that I'm creating. I have an action which accepts an Http Post and the argument of the action method accepts an object, for which I have created and registered a custom model binder. I noticed that inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuting the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is always null despite the fact that it looks like the model binder is always invoked before the action filter OnActionExecuting method. In contrast to this inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuted method of the same action filter the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is not null. Do you guys know if this is by design or a bug? If by design are their any links which describe why this is? Thanks.

  • Memory leak when using Workflow 4.0 SqlWorkflowInstanceStore and PersistableIdleAction.Unload

    Hi, This particular problem is driving me nuts. I wonder if anyone has experienced a similar problem. If I load up a workflow then unload it and perform a memory snapshot then the result is predictable - my workflow is no longer in memory. However, if I load up a workflow and set the PersistableIdle action to PersistableIdleAction.Unload and let the workflow idle the workflow remains in memory even though the Unload action fires. I used ANTS Memory Profiler to debug this issue. This is the object retention graph outputted showing that an internal object is hanging onto my workflow instance. Can anyone else verify this problem? My code amounts to the following: Create SqlWorkflowInstanceStore and setup lock owner handle -- At this point I take a memory snapshot Create an instance of Workflow1 Set the PersistableIdle action Apply the instancestore to Workflow1 Setup action event handlers for Idle, Unload, UnhandledException etc. Persist the workflow instance Run the workflow instance Wait for instance to idle (caused by Delay activity) Ensure the Unload action is fired -- At this point I take a second memory snapshot From the above image, it is clear that the only object referencing Workflow1 is some internal event handlers result which I have no ability to dispose of. Any clues?

    .I'm trying to set up a multi language website with kohana v3, following this tutorial: http://kerkness.ca/wiki/doku.php?id=example_of_a_multi-language_website Routing to a controller or action within i.e. website/controller/action seems to work as the url is properly redirected to website/lang/controller/action. However this is not working for ajax request calls. I have to manually edit the url with the appropriate language, to successfully retrieve the data. This also applies for anchors on the html page. In addition to this problem, the overflow parameter 'id' also doesn't work. It takes the 'lang' variable as its parameter. I have setup my default route just like in the tutorial i.e.: Route::set('default', '((<lang>)(/)(<controller>)(/<action>(/<id>)))', array('lang' => "({$langs_abr})",'id'=>'.+')) ->defaults(array('lang' => $default_lang,'controller' => welcome', 'action' => 'index')); Any help is much appreciated !     I have an InstallShield MSI project. When I pass an MSIHANDLE from an InstallScript custom action to a managed assembly initialized via DotNetCoCreateObject(), the value received within my managed code is -2. Does anyone know if it is possible to access an MSIHANDLE from an InstallScript custom action that calls into managed code via DotNetCoCreateObject()? I'd like to log my custom action results to the same log file as the rest of the installation. I am using InstallShield 2010, Windows Install 4.5 and .Net 3.5.

    I'm really trying to switch to emacs, but learning to setup the environment is a real pain. Everybody says it's worth it, so I just continue. I want my c code to be implemented that way: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } Depending on the current standard (I know, don't get me started), could be: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } I can't seem to change the indentation size from 2, it always looks like the GNU standard: if(asdf) { asdr = 1; } , which I dislike. Here is what I have put in my .emacs: ; Warn in C for while();, if(x=0), ...
