  • Solr Vs. Sphinx in a Ruby project

    I have a project that is being written on top of the Grape API framework in ruby. (https://github.com/intridea/grape) The problem I'm having is that Thinking-Sphinx vs. Sunspot (Gems used to interface with each search index) have worlds different benchmarks. View the Benchmark Here We're trying to develop something that is quick and easy to deploy (Solr needs Java). The issues we see right now is mainly that Solr is slower through Sunspot gem and Sphinx is faster through Thinking-Sphinx because Solr is HTTP REST calls where Sphinx is sockets. Anyone have any experience in either and can explain pitfalls / bonuses? Note: Needs to be deployable to Rails AND non-rails apps (Hence Sunspot). Thanks!

  • MySQL.. search using Fulltext or using Like? What is better?

    I'm working on a search feature for my application, I want to search all articles in the database. As of now, I'm using a LIKE in my queries, but I want to add a "Related Articles" feature, sort of like what SO has in the sidebar (which I see as a problem if I use Like). What's better to use for MySQL searching, Fulltext or Like... or anything else I might not know about? Also, I'm using the Kohana Framework, so If anybody knows an easy way to do fulltext matching using the query builder, I'd appreciate that. Thanks.

  • Paperclip + ImageMagick on Windows 7: Image display fails when I add styles to attached_file in mode

    I'm working with Ruby on rails 2.3.8, NetBeans IDE. I've installed paperclip and I could show/save images successfully. Now, I've installed ImageMagick-6.6.2-4-Q16(for windows 7, 64bits). Until that moment, my model looked like this(and worked fine): has_attached_file :photo Now, after installing ImageMagick, when I add the :style line it fails: has_attached_file :photo, :styles => {:thumb => "100x100#", :small => "150x150>", :large => "400x400>" } and it throws the following error message when I try to upload an image: TypeError in ProfilesController#update backtrace must be Array of String The only thing I'm doing in the update action of that controller is the following: @profile.update_attributes(params[:profile]) @profile.update_attribute(:photo, params[:profile][:photo]) I've also installed miniMagick gem(because I read somewhere I had to do it). What am I missing?

    I'm using Android support library v13. There is a strange thing I couldn't understand. When creating new activity, I load fragment as: Main activity layout: ... <FrameLayout android:id="@+id/fragment_1" ... /> In onCreate() of main activity: mFragment = (FragmentActivity) getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.fragment_1); // if screen orientation changed, no need to create new instance of fragment if (mFragment == null) { mFragment = ...; // create new instance of fragment FragmentTransaction ft = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); ft.replace(R.id.fragment_1, mFragment); // because this is called ONCE, we can use this method ft.commitAllowingStateLoss(); } Now, everything works perfectly in emulators 1.5, 1.6 and 2.2. I have a phone 2.2.2. But there is an exception: if the app is running, and screen orientation changed. Inside onActivityCreated(), getActivity() sometimes returns null. This only happens in emulators 1.5/ 1.6/ 2.2. My phone 2.2.2 works very well, I test hundreds of times but never catch that bug. Even other emulators 3.x, 4.x work well too. Unfortunately I don't have phone 1.5/ 1.6/ 2.2. So did you have experience with this? Is that a bug of the support library, or emulators? Could you please help me? Thank you in advance.

  • Fulltext for innoDB? or a good solution for php app

    I have a table I want to run a fulltext search on, but it is currently innoDB and is using a lot of foreign keys for other kinds of queries. Should I make like a 1:1 "meta-data" table that is myisam for fulltext? Also I am reading some things that say that fulltext corrupts MySQL tables pretty randomly? I dunno, the articles are a couple years old, maybe they've fixed that in 5+? If not what's a good solution for searching? Zend_Lucene seems cool but slow, even with caching, for the client's large tables and autocomplete functionality et al.

  • JQuery JEditable stay in edit mode on error

    I'm successfully using jeditable to submit via a function using jQuery.ajax and the async : false option , but am having an issue aborting if an error is returned. How can I get the edit box to stay activated and / or revert back to the original value if there are errors? I'm returning http status codes. so something like async : false .ajax submit here... if (xhr.status == 200) { return value; else { alert ('returned error'); // keep edit box activated but available for another try, or revert back to original value } I tried not returning a value from the function, which keeps the edit box activated and ready for another submit, but then the ESC key doesn't work anymore and if I click outside the edit area, the edit box stays.     In Windows Mobile (5,6) you can have different sound volume settings. The volume itself is easy, but how do I differ between the two silent settings? There is one volume setting "vibration only" and one "no sound, no vibration at all". Since my program is using vibration, I'd like to know if windows mobile is set to "no vibration at all", so I don't annoy the user when he wants his phone to be absolutely silent.

    I am now playing a little bit with lift (2.8.0), and all the features in LiftRules work as intended. But I haven't been able to use S.redirectTo at all. I always ends with a blank screen, no matter what. No error messages at all! How should I invoke S.redirectoTo in order to navigate to 'examples.html'? Also, why don't I receive an error message (I am logging at a debug level)? I think all the configuration in Boot is correct, since all LitRules examples (statelessRewrite, dispatch, viewDispatch, snippets) work fine.

I like lucene.net but the problem is the LINQ interface (LINQ to Lucene) hasn't been updated since 2008. Are there any good options out there?

  • Full coordinates across streets with google maps

    If you go here: http://econym.org.uk/gmap/snap.htm there are some examples of the kind of stuff I'm trying to do. I want the user to enter a route on a google maps widget, and then have the map drawl the route along roads. Then the user click on a "submit" button, and their route is sent back to the server where it will be stored in a database. Instead of sending back just the red vertices, I want to send back all the information that makes up the purple lines. Is this possible?

  • Fulltext and composite indexes and how they affect the query

    Just say I had a query as below.. SELECT name,category,address,city,state FROM table WHERE MATCH(name,subcategory,category,tag1) AGAINST('education') AND city='Oakland' AND state='CA' LIMIT 0, 10; ..and I had a fulltext index as name,subcategory,category,tag1 and a composite index as city,state; is this good enough for this query? Just wondering if something extra is needed when mixing additional AND's when making use of the fulltext index with the MATCH/AGAINST. Edit: What I am trying to understand is, what happens with the additional columns that are within the query but are not indexed in the chosen index (the fulltext index), the above example being city and state. How does MySQL now find the matching rows for these since it can't use two indexes (or can it?) - so, basically, I'm trying to understand how MySQL goes about finding the data optimally for the columns NOT in the chosen fulltext index and if there is anything I can or should do to optimize the query.

  • How to use LINQ to SQL to create ranked search results?

    I am looking for a way to use l2s to return ranked result based on keywords. I would like to take a keyword and be able to search the table for that keyword using .contains(). The trick that I haven't been able to figure out is how to get a count of how many times that keyqord appears, and then .OrderByDescending() based on that count. So if i had some thing like: string keyword = "SomeKeyword"; IQueryable<Article> searchResults = from a in GenesisRepository.Article where a.Body.Contains(keyword) select a; What is the best way to order searchResults based on the number of times keyword appears in a.Body?   • Can't get screen pixel from a specific full screen game with any language?

    Okay, I know this might seem like I'm posting a duplicate question since I've asked something similar like a day ago HOWEVER, if anyone sees any problem with this, please read my question first before judging: Yesterday I tried getting a specific pixel from a fullscreen game in C#. I thought my C# code was faulty but when I tried with multiple full screen games today they all worked except for that specific game. I literally tried with 10 different full screen games, a couple being mmofps, mmorpg, mmotps, regular rpg games, regular shooters, regular action adventure games, etc. I tried with multiple programming languages, and with every game except that specific game I'm dealing with, it returns the pixel color to me like I wanted. So let me explain what I tried: first I tried returning an IntPtr with C# using GetDC(IntPtr.Zero) before invoking GetPixel(int x, int y) and then getting the color out of it. Then I tried using the Robot class in Java and using the getPixelColor(int x, int y) method. I also tried using GetDC(0) to return an HDC object in C++ and then invoking GetPixel(int x, int y) before again extracting the color. These three methods worked EXACTLY the same in every single game except that specific game I was talking about. They returned the pixel perfectly, and extracted the exact same color perfectly. I don't feel it's necessary to tell you the game name or anything, since you probably don't even know it, but what could possibly be causing this malfunction in 1 specific game? PS: The game ALWAYS returns an RGB color of: A = 255, R = 0, G = 0, B = 0. Also, I tried taking a snapshot of the game with the 3 programming languages, and then getting the pixel which actually works in all 3 languages, but since I need to get this pixel every 30 ms, it kind of makes my game lag a bit (+ I think it takes up a lot of memory)

  • Python program to search for specific strings in hash values (coding help)

    Trying to write a code that searches hash values for specific string's (input by user) and returns the hash if searchquery is present in that line. Doing this to kind of just learn python a bit more, but it could be a real world application used by an HR department to search a .csv resume database for specific words in each resume. I'd like this program to look through a .csv file that has three entries per line (id#;applicant name;resume text) I set it up so that it creates a hash, then created a string for the resume text hash entry, and am trying to use the .find() function to return the entire hash for each instance. What i'd like is if the word "gpa" is used as a search query and it is found in s['resumetext'] for three applicants(rows in .csv file), it prints the id, name, and resume for every row that has it.(All three applicants) As it is right now, my program prints the first row in the .csv file(print resume['id'], resume['name'], resume['resumetext']) no matter what the searchquery is, whether it's in the resumetext or not. lastly, are there better ways to doing this, by searching word documents, pdf's and .txt files in a folder for specific words using python (i've just started reading about the re module and am wondering if this may be the route, rather than putting everything in a .csv file.) def find_details(id2find): resumes_f=open("resume_data.csv") for each_line in resumes_f: s={} (s['id'], s['name'], s['resumetext']) = each_line.split(";") resumetext = str(s['resumetext']) if resumetext.find(id2find): return(s) else: print "No data matches your search query.     Hello, I have two tables in a SQL Server 2008 database in my company. The first table represents the products that my company sells. The second table contains the product manufacturer’s details. These tables are defined as follows: Product ------- ID Name ManufacturerID Description Manufacturer ------------ ID Name As you can imagine, I want to make this as easy as possible for our customers to query this data. However, I’m having problems writing a forgiving, yet powerful search query. For instance, I’m anticipating people to search based on phonetical spellings. Because of this, the data may not match the exact data in my database. In addition, I think some individuals will search by manufacturer’s name first, but I want the matching product names to appear first. Based on these requirements, I’m currently working on the following query: select p.Name as 'ProductName', m.Name as 'Manufacturer', r.Rank as 'Rank' from Product p inner join Manufacturer m on p.ManufacturerID=m.ID inner join CONTAINSTABLE(Product, Name, @searchQuery) as r Oddly, this query is throwing an error. However, I have no idea why. Squiggles appear to the right of the last parenthesis in management studio. The tool tip says "An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected". I understand what this statement means. However, I guess I do not know how COntainsTable works. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

    I have a table of over 1 million test score records that basically have a unique score_ID, a subject_ID and a score given by a person. The score range for most subjects is 0-3, but some have a range of 0-4. There are about 25 possible subjects. I need to produce a score distribution report which looks like: subject_ID 0 1 2 3 4 ---------- --- --- --- --- --- 1 967 576 856 234 2 576 947 847 987 324 . . So it groups the data by subject_ID, then shows how many times a specific score value was given within that subject. Any SQL pointers to generate this would be greatly appreciated.

  • g:countrySelect with full country name as value

    I want to store the exact country name using g:countrySelect. Example Germany instead of DEU. It is the value in the drop down menu. The drop down text is Germany but when it saves it to the database it changes back to the country code. Sorry if I am somewhat naive but I have been searching for almost 3 hours for solutions and it isn't well documented at the grails website. I could opt for any alternative even ajax. Just to have an easy way to display a list of countries and will be able to store the REAL NAME of the country NOT country code. Thank you!
