• Does anyone have thoughts/experiences on the IT division of Accenture? I just got a job offer from them.

  Hi everyone, this is my first post here. As the title says, I just got a job offer for an entry level Technology Analyst role at Accenture, which is a very large consulting company. I'm a recent college graduate, and this would be my first "real" job out of school. I'm wondering if any of you guys have any experiences/insights/opinions on Accenture as a company, specifically, the Security or IT Strategy divisions of its Technology consulting branch. What do you think of the people there, the management, the clients, etc? Thanks a lot; hopefully this will help me make a decision.

• Subdomain Is Redirected and Causing an Error Because www. is Added

  On my site, say example.com, if I try to access test.example.com, Firefox automatically adds www. to test.example.com, making it www.test.example.com, which causes an error. However, if I visit a site like my.ebay.com, no www. is added so no error occurs. What's going on? Just in case, my .htaccess file is as follows: Options -Multiviews RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php I looked through Firebug and it seems like Firefox doesn't even make an attempt to reach test.example.com before reverting to www.test.example.com. One nuance I didn't realize until now. If I try to access the site using test.example.com/, the www. is added. If however that trailing slash is not there, then I am sent to the subdomain properly.

• What can I do when the interviewer doesn't know the answer to his/her own question?

  Yesterday I had a terrible experience in an interview. Interviewer asked me about pure virtual function. I said, It may or may not have definition in base class, but derived classes should provide definition unless they also want to be abstract class. But interviewer kept on asking that "Can pure virtual have definition !!! ???"... I said yes. Again he said "Pure ?" I said yes. It is allowed, derived classes can explicitly call that function if they want that particular behavior. He sent me out. I am sure that he doesn't know the fact that pure virtual function can have definition. How to deal with this kind of Interviewers ? After asking 2nd time, should i lie that it can't have definition ? :) Or i should stick to my words and loose the job opportunity ?

• How do I add restrictions for users to sign up before they can access web site?

  How do I get my webpage not to go back when they hit the back button and are logged out and how can I add a web page to be blocked like FACEBOOK doesn't let you get into their site with out having a page or a account with them, and if you try to put something in the url and try to go to something on their site it gives you a web page that says "you have to be logged in first" . Like I don't want someone going to the url of the "index" page before they have signed up as a member they need to make an account first then they can have access to the "index" page. How do I do this. I have a website so far that has a database and the website has 5 pages so far and two of them which is the login and sign up page which are both used with php and mysql and they work fine. How do I restrict access to the main website by first having the users sign up with me for an account.

• Advice on what to learn? [closed]

  Currently I work as a .NET C# programmer, quite fresh faced at that (only been working professionally for 8 months) I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but I'm now thinking ahead for other languages to learn. I've heard from quite a few seasoned developers that they reckon it's worth getting in to HTML5. Before I asked this question I read a few of the other questions similar to this, but most were dated back a few years. I'm wondering what your advice would be to an aspiring programmer, what I should avoid going for (i.e. as I understand it Flash is essentially going to be phased out due to HTML5) I was looking in to WPF and the more updated .NET technologies, but someone advised me that WPF stuff will probably be redundant in the future. • Javascript Event in Innerhtml Resulting from PHP Server Script

  I'm (very slowly) making a website, and I'm creating a search engine for the database, which is essential to organize the dependencies during data entry. Anyway, what I would like is to type a few keywords into a box, have a menu pop up with various search results, and have the box fill with the ID number of the selected entry when it's clicked. Currently, I have a document called search.php which fills a div called search-output using xmlhttp.open() and the innerhtml property. Everything is working perfectly except for filling the original search box with the ID number when clicking. My first attempt was to add an onclick event to each entry in the output from search.php. Unfortunately, I found that javascript inserted into innerhtml is not run for security reasons. I've been Googling for hours but haven't been able to find a solution. How can I get the original search text box to fill with the correct ID when I click it? Is what I'm doing a good setup for the results I desire, or is there a better way to integrate search features into data entry?

• How can I get non-programmer colleagues on board with bespoke software rather than Dynamics CRM + Sharepoint?

  I am working with a company which designs and builds one-off machines. They have been 'dabbling' with hosted Dynamics CRM and Sharepoint (on different servers!) in an attempt to centralise their data and help colleagues collaborate more effectively across projects. They haven't used either system to their potential. Now we are looking at the engineering department who already use a form of version control software for the various CAD files (Autodesk Vault) however it is becoming increasingly necessary to implement more of a generic file version control system as they use many more files than can be managed in Vault (sometimes just photos or scans of paper documents), hence why they were looking at using Sharepoint. However... as the 'programmer' of the bunch, I can see several scenarios which don't seem to fit well with the Dynamics + Sharepoint approach; simple reports based on cross-table queries, exporting certain metrics as a spreadsheet, defining project hierarchies and many-many relationships, and as such I have been pushing for an in-house developed 'ECM' / 'ERP' software package (perhaps in .NET or php). Some colleagues seem to attach a greater value to the MS software (perhaps becuase it has a logo!) but don't see that it's just a framework, not a solution. Can anyone provide a good example of when custom software would actually be better than using Dynamics + Sharepoint and how do I relate that to non-technical staff?

• Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! The site has a Homepage, a Store page (where all accessories are displayed), a page for each of the accessories description, an about page and a contact page. There is also a whole set up for shopping cart and checkout (irrelevant to this question). My issue is the SEO. Where can I put the keywords? The home page has only the menu and some photos. The store page displays the items and its titles. Then the specific item's page has a description of the item (pulled from the database), category and price. However, I feel like this is not enough for SEO for google ranking. Where could I add tags in this type of site?

• What parts of Java I should know by now?

  I have been working in the enterprise Java field, mostly for financial institutions, for about seven years. Beyond core Java, what are "parts" of Java I should know by now? Should as in it will be useful either to nail the interview, or in an actual job. For example, I have never used JSP beyond "hello, world", but I don't suppose that it's something I need to go learn. But I have got core Spring pretty well done. I've read up on GC but that was a while back and need to re-visit it. I'm looking for one suggestion per post please.

• what to learn & practice to be a programmer (not for Job) [closed]

  I want to be able to write programs (tools) for my own needs, and I want to tell the computer what to do, not to be strict to what other's told it to do. I have a good knowledge of Linux & Windows, I am also have a bit of Python in my head, but I think that I need some guidance on what languages or practices to invest my time into in order to be able to tell the computer what to do. I know there is a lot of posts similar to what I am asking here, but there is a big difference and so I have opened this thread. My goal isn't to work at a company, so I don't need to learn how to work as a team, I don't need to learn as much how to maintain my code nor how to write it nice for others to understand (I know it is important but not for me). I don't want to learn it as a profession, but as a serious hobby (you can call it hacking as long as you know what cracking means), my end goal is to be able to understand other's people code, and to write my own code with a lot of deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the computer system in order to gain from it as much as I can. So in essence my questions are: How can I understand, in depth, computers, in order to exploit them as much as I can? What should I learn? Are there any books that I should read? Is it possible to do this, or do I have to learn every aspect of programming?

• Has anyone used game salad before and how does it compare with cocos2d in terms of 2d game development

  First a short intro. I am new to the game development space and want to make some 2d games for iOS. I first come across cocos2d and kobold but then wanted something more graphical for rapid prototyping. I then found Game Maker which doesn't support iOS but is fairly easy to learn and then found Game Salad which supports iOS as well as other platforms. I know this question has been ask before but I want to know in terms of the types of games I want to develop what an learning investment path would be best. The types of games genre I am interest are: Side scrollers Simple games like diamond dash or ninja fruits, shanghai, etc Old fashioned zelda or dragonquest type (nintendo fan here:-) 2d adventure RPG games (real time or turn based) Mystery turn based games like carmen sandiego, wizardry, myst etc. So now the question becomes Which game development environment should I invest my time in learning. Game Salad or cocos2d? It would seem game salad would be great for quickies being graphical but in terms of 2d platform games etc would there be speed/performance/feature penalties? Are there certain 2d games genre of the 4 above that Game salad is better at while certain type cocos2d would be better at? Anyone with experience of both can share some pointers? Why? I don't understand it. I would like to write a method to focus_changed, but I can't if it doesn't works.

I design websites, free of charge, for nonprofit organizations that are just starting and do not have the resources to hire a design firm. I am in need of a flash/swf editor and compiler. I had a program that I used with the awful previous O/S, however WINE would not run the program. Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer.   Our client asked to implement a system with web technologies and the basic functionalities of: We have 3 users: Admin, User, Visitor. provide videos with an indexing system. Videos and other info about them are uploaded from an admin panel. Users can make playlists, add extra info to videos etc. Visitors watch playlists, videos, track their progress etc. This are some of the very basic functionalities of the system, just to get an idea. So we agreed it's a saas project and we started with php,symphony,jquery,requireJS etc. Now our client says that he wants the user and visitor part has to be accessible offline only. He says the user can download the videos and software, and continue offline. What are your suggestions on this? Provide the ability for the user to download a local server, or another way?

  I am thinking of going directly to companies and then giving them resume directly rather than by email. I know 60% of comapnies don't like it but there is still 40% of getting into something. My few friends have landed the jobs this way. I just want to know that when i reach the company , should i ask the receptionist for manager and talk directly to manager or first i should talk to receptionsist and tell her what i want. • How to bridge the gap between university and job requirements

  I study physics and computer science and both studies include minor programming tasks whereas larger tasks are only (potentially) a part of larger projects like for your thesis. When I look at job postings for scientific jobs e.g. in the area of HPC they usually ask for "extensive programming skills in C/C++ and HPC" or the like. This is what I would like to achieve, but frankly I don't know how. I don't mean to mourn, but you can imagine that studying physics/CS means having a busy schedule so I couldn't even work part time as a research assistant to get practice without negative influence on my grades. The second problem is that I lack ideas on what to code in my spare time. I would like to do something useful but even for open source projects you apparently need a whole lot of time and depending on the type of software a lot of experience to be useful. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me.

• In what order do people build websites?

  For a website, you need to have an idea, you need to have a design and you need to have data, events and output, right? Whether it be a blog, web app, Q&A site, search engine... Anyway, that is only slightly related to my question. My question is, when designing a website, providing I know the purpose, what should I start with? Should I start with the CSS, design and look&feel using dummy data first, or should I program in the logic, events and output, and style it later? What is the design process of most websites that are built from the ground up?
