• How to automatically mount a Windows shared folder on every boot up?

  I am able to access Windows' shared folder from Ubuntu 10.10 Nautilus like so: Type into the Location Bar : smb://box/projects Now, I can see the folder in Nautilus, create/read files in it. Also, on desktop I get a folder called "projects on box". But, that folder on the desktop goes away when I reboot. So, I thought that I can automount the Windows' shared projects folder by adding this to my fstab: //box/Projects /home/base/Projects smbfs rw,user,username=jack,password=www222,fmask=666,dmask=777 0 0 (base is my user name on Ubuntu) Now, I get a folder called "Projects" in my home folder after boot up, but it is empty (cannot see the same files that I can see in Nautilus). What's am I doing wrong? Some more detail: This is what I see of the Projects folder when I do ls -l in my home folder: ... drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2011-01-01 10:22 Projects drwxr-xr-x 2 base base 4096 2011-01-01 09:06 Public ...   I am running out of space in the /var partition. I have plenty of space in my /home partition. How do I shrink the /home partition to make more space for the /var partition? I have read some blogs that say to use the GParted Live CD. As a new user, I'm not quite sure if this is the ideal route. What is the best way to create more space for /var ?   I cannot categorize this question under ubuntu since it has nothing to do with it. But I know people here can definitely answer this. I login to one of my deployment boxes using SSH (no ubuntu here). I am working in a tool called TeamCity which uses a folder called ".BuildServer" under home directory of the user. This folder may grow in size as the application runs but the current user is only given a limited amount of space. But the good thing this I got a folder access outside /home/deploy (deploy being the user here) folder. I now want to link this .BuildServer inside the /home/deploy directory to the other folder where I got permission for (meaning all the files should be re-routed to that directory) Hope my question was clear, please help.

• Why do I get this error trying to compile libxml2?

  Although, I installed libxml2 once and reinstalled it for a few times. I cannot compile c-source code because compiler cannot find where the header file is. I am able to locate where it is (in the folder where I downloaded the tar.gz package) but I had a feeling in my guts that this package isn't installed correctly because when I tried to sudo make install, it says /bin/bash: /home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz: No such file or directory make[2]: *** [install-libLTLIBRARIES] Error 127 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz packages/libxml2-2.8.0' make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz packages/libxml2-2.8.0' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 that's why I installed synaptic package manager and reinstalled it, but in this case, isn't it supposed to put header files in default directory where gcc normally searches in currently, I am able to compile it with -I option, but I wonder why do I have to copy headers manually even if I used synaptic for installation and why I am getting Error 1 and Error 2 when trying to install the package manually. thanks in advance

• Why Gsettings isn't enough to reset my nautilus settings?

  I'm trying to narrow down a bug (to eventually report it or give up if it'll turn out that resetting a simple setting will be enough to get rid of it) I noticed that with a brand new user the bug doesn't pop up so I tried to reset the config of my user's nautilus I renamed .config/nautilus I renamed .nautilus2 (strange name... why the 2?) and I did a gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.nautilus strangely enough, it didn't work: I previously set up to use my home as the desktop folder, and now the key has correctly been resetted $gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences desktop-is-home-dir false and yet on my desktop I see the contents of my home folder (meaning that the settings have not been resetted) I know that with the transition to gtk3 there've been lots of changes (before I should've used gconf... but now there's dconf and gsettings), so there're quite a bit of question about nautilus... but these unfortunately now seem to be outdated

• Runescape - Ubuntu 12.04 - Jaggex cache folder

  does anyone here know how to hide the jaggexcache folder, jagexappletviewer file and jagex_cl_runescape_LIVE file from the home folder? The problem is this, everytime you play runescape (in both windows or linux), it creates those files and folders. The problem is that on windows, you can hide them and everything is fine. On linux, if you add ( /.) to the folder or file to hide it, when you play runescape, those files and folders are again created, because they cannot be found. As far as I know, the game is Java based (needs java iced tea plug in and java 7), so is there any way of changing the directory where the game puts all those files? like home/documents instead of just /home thanks!

  I hope my message will get read soon and somebody will give me a solution. I use fortran to do simulation and gfortran is the compiler I use. Recently I migrated from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.10. After installing gfortran then I tried to compile and run my fortran programs then the problem started. I successfully compiled the program but I am unable to execute it. (I work in a directory in shared partition, not in HOME directory). When I compiled the program and run it within HOME directory, everything worked fine. On my Ubuntu 10.10, I was able to compile and execute fortran program from everywhere not only within HOME directory. This is what I do for compiling and executing fortran program: gfortran hello.f90 -o hello # to compile it ./hello # to execute it I'm blind about PATH or anything like it (this has to do with it, I suspect) so please give me direction.

My project root dir is "/home/wuchang/workspace/MongodbI". But When this Class is loaded from other class,such as I called one of its static functions , it reports the error message: /home/mrs/??/eclipse/src/exception/ExceptionCode.xml (No such file or directory) /home/mrs/??/eclipse/ is actually my eclipse installation directory.So , I wander how System.getProperty("user.dir") returned the eclipse installation directory to me ,instead of my project root directory?

• Samba login before requesting list of shares?

  I'm relatively inexperienced at this and am starting to get a little frustrated: I have a Ubuntu Server with several user accounts. The Samba file server hosts a number of public shares + the home directories of each user as a private share. When connecting to the server using my OSX machine, I am prompted to enter my login data, and get a overview of all the public shares + my accounts home directory share. Exactly the way I want it. How ever, when I connect to the server from a Ubuntu machine, I am never prompted to enter any login data, and can only see the public folders. If a user wants to connect to their home directory on the server, they have to go through "connect to server" and mount their specific private share. Is there anyway to configure Samba or the Ubuntu client in a way that will make the user experience more similar to how it is on my OSX box? Thank you for your time!

• SBS domain name choice

  We are about to set up SBS 2011 at my small company < 10 users. My collaborator wants to name the SBS domain "example.local" . I'm of the opinion we should name the SBS domain "corp.example.com" and setup DNS so the "corp" record is a NS record to the SBS server's private IP. FYI: "Example.com" isn't the real domain name and while the website is hosted outside our office, email will be stored on the SBS server in our office after passing though a spam filtering smart host hosted elsewhere too.

  I'm using Microsoft Office 2003. I have installed 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2007' to support new xml based formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). Now given that I have installed Compatibility pack, can I create or open a Microsoft Excel 2007 file (.xlsx) having more than 256 columns in Excel 2003? If no, then how can I achieve the same. My observation: When I open a .xlsx file in Excel 2003 with compatibility, I can't see more than 256 columns (till Column IV).

• Multi-Role Domain Controllers for Small Offices (< 50 clients)

  Warning: I'm a Linux/*NIX admin so this is all new to me. I understand that it's not considered a good idea to have only a single domain controller, and that it is also probably a good idea for a domain controller to only do AD/DHCP/DNS (Here). We have two offices, location A with 30 users and location B with 10 users. Our two offices are separated by a WAN that is not particularly robust so I have be instructed that we need to have standalone services in each office. This means that according to "best practices" we will need to build a domain controller and a separate file server in each office. Again, I am not knowledgeable in the ways of Windows but this seems a little unnecessary for an organization of 40 users. People have commented that I could "get away with" running file services on the domain controller as long as the "load is light". That just seems to generate more questions than it answers. What constitutes light load? What are the potential consequences of mixing these roles? Ideally I would prefer to only have one physical machine at each location. The one in location A (the location with IT staff) can act as the primary domain controller and the one in the smaller office can act as the backup domain controller. If either domain controller fails we can still use the other one for authentication (albeit with some latency) and if the WAN connection fails each office still has access to their respective "local" domain controller. If the file services are ALSO run on each server (and synchronized with something like DFS), a similar arrangement in terms of redundancy can be had without having to purchase, build and install two additional separate servers. It's not that I'm adverse to that (well, any more adverse than I am to whole thing to begin with) but to my simple mind it just seems, well a bit overkill. I can definitely see the benefits of functional separation when we're talking larger organizations, but I need to consider the additional overhead too. None of this excludes having a DRP setup for the domain controller/s. I assume you can lose two domain controllers just as easily as one.

• OpenVPN, Great on Windows, VERY slow on Mac...

  Hello, I'm not really an IT Pro, but this seemed like the best place to ask this question... I have setup VPN networks in the past, for fun, and everything was great, but now I've set one up for my boss, and while my computers all work great, his Mac machines are almost too slow to work with. Its pretty much vanilla configs all around, anyone have any ideas? Its a TUN routing setup over UDP. Back Story: My boss travels a lot, and wants to be able to access all his files from the road, and is also pretty paranoid about security (even though knows almost nothing about computers). SO i figured a VPN would be the answer. I went with OpenVPN, but there are some other issues. The only ISP we can get in our area besides Dial-UP is a crappy Satellite provider, that doesn't offer public IPs unless your willing to pay, so while the computers and VPN setup are pretty vanilla, the routing and structure is strange to get around this limitation. Specs: Its OpenVPN2, and there are six machines using it (only three actually use it, the rest are my test machines), one Windows 7 laptop, two XP Desktops, one OS X 10.5 Desktop, one 10.6 Desktop, and one 10.6 Laptop. One XP Desktop sits at my house and acts as the server (6Mbs/2Mbs FIOS connection). One XP desktop sits at the office and hosts a webpage that will wake up the Main Mac Desktop from sleep, and also ping all the machines on the VPN and show their status. The main office mac (10.6) stays in sleep mode until it gets the Wake-On-Lan packet from the Office XP, and then it auto connects to the VPN and opens itself up. The reason for all this is the Satellite private IP crap means i cant directly access the office machines outside of the LAN, so everyone connects to my house first, then they talk to each other from there. The Wake On Lan weirdness is because my boss doesn't want to leave the main Mac on all the time, and making a quick and dirty webpage was the easiest way to send a Magic Packet from inside the LAN without confusing my boss. The VPN uses Client Config files to make static IPs for the client. The only thing i found in google was some changes to the VPN MTU settings (down to 1400) but no real help. Oh, and i forgot...all the windows machines just have OpenVPN start as a service. The Mac laptop uses tunnelblick (an OpenVPN GUI) and the Mac Desktops use OpenVPN in normal command line mode. • How to grow to be global sysadmin of an organization?

  Bit of a non-technical question but I have seen questions of the career development type on here before so hopefully it is fine. I work for a fast growing but still small organization (~65 employees). I have been their external sysadmin for a while now, looking after hosted Linux servers and infrastructure. In the past 12 months I have been transforming into the internal sysadmin for our office too. I'm currently studying Cisco CCNA to cover the demands of being an internal sysadmin and looking after the office LAN, routers, switches and VPNs. Now they want me to look after the global sysadmin function of the organization as a whole. The organization has 3 offices in total, 2 in the UK and 1 in the US. I work in one of the UK offices. The other offices are primarily Windows desktops with AD domain shops. My office is primarily a Linux shop with a file-server and NFS/NIS (no AD domain for the Windows desktops yet but it's in the works). Each other office has a sysadmin which in theory I am supposed to supervise but in reality each is independent. I have a very competent junior sysadmin working with me who shares the day-to-day tasks and does some of the longer term projects with my supervision. My boss has asked me how to grow from being the external sysadmin to the global sysadmin. I am to ponder this and then report back to him on how to achieve this. My current thoughts are: Management training or professional development - eg. reading books such as "Influencer" and "7 Habits". Also I feel I should take steps to improving communication skills since a senior person is expected to talk and speak out more often. Learn more about Windows and Active Directory - I'm an LPI-certified guy and have a lot of experience in Linux (Ubuntu or desktop, Debian/Ubuntu as server). Since the other offices are mainly Windows-domains it makes sense to skill-up in that area so I can understand what the other admins are talking about. Talk to previous colleagues who have are are in this role already - to try and get the benefit of their experience. Produce an "IT Roadmap" or similar that maps out where we want the organization to be and when, plotted out over the next couple of years with regards to internal and external infrastructure. I have produced a "Security roadmap" already which does cover some of these things. I guess this can summed up as "thinking more strategically"? I'd appreciate comments from anyone who has been through a similar situation, thanks.

• Cisco VPN stops Windows 7 Browsing

  My browsing and other 'internet' activity (dropbox,digsby etc) halts when I connect to my office VPN using Cisco Systems VPN client Version 5.0.04.0300 on my Windows 7 Ultimate.The only option left for me at this time is to use my office proxy to enable the connection back. I tried doing the ucheck "Use default gateway on remote network" solution as mentioned on a previous post Windows 7 VPN stops web browser but I don't see that option on the properties of "Cisco systems VPN adapter" connection properties. • Proxy to restrict access to certain websites

  Hi all, I'm looking for a solution that allows our office server to function as a proxy that blocks access to certain websites for certain LAN ip's. The solution i'm looking for has to meet these requirements: run on ubuntu server restrict access to certain websites based on a LAN ip (eg: shut out xxx.com for 192.168.1.152) restrict access to a website based on the website url (eg: shut out *.facebook.com) easily configurable (preferably through a web interface, our office manager should be able to operate it thus no commandline fu if possible) preferably opensource Thanks for your time!
