Auto-Complete Suggestions in Source Code Editor

Hello, Most IDEs (Eclipse, Netbeans, Intelij) provide contextually smart suggestions about the current statement you're writing. We would like to do the same thing (In Java for Java). We considered tokenizing the input and building our own abstract syntax trees, but quickly realized that could be a month long project in and of its self. We also started digging through the source code for the above mentioned IDEs, but it appears (correct me if I'm wrong) that the auto-complete code is pretty tightly woven with the rest of the IDE. We're wondering if anyone knows of a relatively isolated package that we could pull into our project to provide this auto-complete functionality. Thanks!

readobject method throws ClassNotFoundException

Hi all, I'm trying to pick up Java and wanted to test around with Java's client/server to make the client send a simple object of a self defined class(Message) over to the server. The problem was that I kept getting a ClassNotFoundException on the server side. I think the rest of the codes seem to be alright because other objects such as String can go through without problems. I had two different netbeans projects in different locations for client and server each. Each of them have their own copy of Message class under their respective packages. Message class implements Serializable. On the client side, I attempt to send a Message object through. On the server side, upon calling the readObject method, it seems to be finding Message class from the client's package instead of it's own. printStackTrace showed: "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: client.Message" on the server side I have not even tried to cast or store the object received yet. Is there something I left out?

Python IDE built into Visual Studio 2008?

Hi I develop in Visual Studio 2008 a lot and would like to find an addin like vsphp which enables intellisense and debugging in Visual Studio. Is IronStudio what I am looking for? As far as I understand IronStudio is a Plugin for .NET. If there is no Plugin for Visual Studio 2008 whats a great IDE for a python newbee who loves Visual Studio (hate netbeans and eclipse sorry just don't feel the love) Also if IronPython Studio is an IDE do I want the Isolated or Integrated Version? hi, i need help modelling a use case diagram from a topic, it will be in java GUI Design a Calculator that 1.Allow user to key in a legitimate arithmetic statement that involves number, operator +, - and bracket '(' and ')' ; 2.When user press “Calculate” button, display result; 3.Some legitimate statement would be ((3+2)-4+2) (equals 3) and (-2+3)-(3-1) (equals -1); 4.You should NOT use a pre-existing function that just take in the statement as a parameter and returns the result but you should write the logic of parsing every character in your code. 5.Store the last statement and answer so it is displayed when user press the “Last calculation” button. i have designed two use case diagrams using UML on netbeans 6.5.1, one of the use case i am not sure whether is it containing too much use cases etc, while the other is what i think could be too vague for the topic.i hope to get some feedback on whether the use case diagram are appropriate, thanks.

Yet another Java classpath problem

Hi I've been working on a project in Netbeans. Now I'd like to submit it and allow the markers to compile it with a script. However, I get the NoClassDefFoundError when I try to run via the command line. Even when setting the classpath to the current directory manually. javac Main.java works fine then calling java -classpath . Main gives: java -classpath . Compiling and executing through commandLine shows NoClassDefFoundError when trying to find Java pack

I have a client/server program that attempts to send and receive an object. There are three packages: server, client and shared shared contains only the Message class I put Message.java from shared package into the same folder as calcclient package source files and calcserver package source files. I compile using the line: javac -classpath .; Message.java They can compile. Then I change directory up one level and ran with: java -classpath .; .Main When I use Netbeans to run, the entire program works as per normal. But not if I run from command line. If its executed through command line, the program will work until it needs to use the Message object. Then it will show a NoClassDefFoundError Am I putting the right files at the right places? How do I get the program to find shared package through command line?

Stable Scala 2.8 plugin

Does anyone know if there exists a stable version of the Scala plugin for eclipse, running with Scala 2.8 (any version of scala 2.8...RC or beta or whatever). I like the fact that it compiles 10 times faster than the netbeans plugin, but it is very unstable, and auto-imports doesnt work. Also, sometimes it cant find classes when I hit "run", then I have to clean it again. This is with some random nightly build of the 2.8 eclipse scala plugin. Is there a stable version? If so, can you link me to it? Thanks in advance :)

Again, what version control system to choose?

Please excuse me for probably a newbie hundred-times-chewed question. I have no experience with version control systems except of using Visual Source Safe in a project done by 2 people sitting in front of each other (which has shown VSS quite sack of boulders, not anything useful). Right now I am looking to grok-in using some modern VCS. Here are the preferences in descending priority order: Platform-agnostic. Pretty pleasant to use With Visual Studio 2010 on Windows as well as With NetBeans 6.9 and Eclipse 3.6 on Linux and Mac. Convenient and efficient for mutually-dependent projects done by teams of 1-10 and consisting of files of quite a diverse selection of types. Including early-stage projects with unstable design and experimenting. Modern. As fresh and future-technology-feature-rich as possible. Free & open-source. Should I take a closer look at SVN, Mercurial, GIT, Bazaar, or something else?

Java: IDE working well with Maven War overlays

We have a Java EE 6 web application which is fully mavenized, and we use the Maven "war overlay" facility to add customer specific files, and which currently runs in Glassfish 3.1. We have traditionally used Eclipse for development, but I have found that the combination of Maven processing and War deployments may not be optimal in terms of deployment times, and that the mavenization allows us to use any IDE with good Maven support. Therefore is Eclipse the best bet for our particular scenario (maven war overlays - glassfish, and debugging it) or is e.g. Netbeans or IntelliJ better? Please, back opinions with actual experiences, thanks.

Swing: what to do when a GUI update takes too long and freezes other GUI elements?

Hello, everyone! I know that GUI code in Java Swing must be put inside SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait or SwingUtilities.invokeLater. This way threading works fine. Sadly, in my situation, the GUI update it that thing which takes much longer than background thread(s). More specific: I update a JTree with about just 400 entries, nesting depth is maximum 4, so should be nothing scary, right? But it takes sometimes one second! I need to ensure that the user is able to type in a JTextPane without delays. Well, guess what, the slow JTree updates do cause delays for JTextPane during input. It refreshes only as soon as the tree gets updated. I am using Netbeans and know empirically that a Java app can update lots of information without freezing the rest of the UI. How can it be done? NOTE 1: All those DefaultMutableTreeNodes are prepared outside the invokeAndWait. NOTE 2: When I replace invokeAndWait with invokeLater the tree doesn't get updated.

Best C++ Linux IDE [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Best unix/linux C++ debuger/IDE ? Hey, I've been searcing and reading about a good Linux C++ IDE, and couldn't set my mind on the right one. I've been using Eclipse with the C++ pluging , for C development, for the last couple months, but I found it not very useful, especially the debugging process that was quite annoying. I love Vistal Studio, so I'm looking for something really close to it. I need an IDE that will provide me, among other things: - rich debugging options - easy to use graphical designer - underscores error/warning (before I compile - like eclipse has) - Intellisense and more... Any suggestion? Maybe NetBeans?

Converting an AWT application to SWT/JFace

I am currently toying with the idea of converting a small/medium sized project from AWT to SWT, although Swing is not totally out of the picture yet. I was thinking about converting the main window to an SWT_AWT bridge object, but I have no idea how the semantics for this work. After that, I plan to update dialog for dialog, but not necessarily within one release. Is this possible? Has someone done a conversion like this and can give me some hints? Is there maybe even a tutorial somewhere out there? Is there maybe even a tool that can automate parts of this? I have tried googling, but to no avail. Update: One additional thing is: Currently, this is a netbeans project. Might be of help or not, I don't know.

How do I handle TODO comments in VisualStudio 2010?

I'd like Visual Studio to list all lines having "TODO: " in their beginning (usually after a comment sign which may vary depending on the file type) that can be found in any textual file in solution (may it be C#, VB, F#, T-SQL, ASPX, XAML or just TXT) in a special panel showing what's written in the line right to "TODO: ", project name (I use to contain many projects in one solution), file name, line number, code block name (like class and method) if possible. Do you know of such an extension or maybe VisualStudio has this feature built-in somewhere? For example NetBeans has a sort of out-of-the-box.

NullPointerException when trying to run an applet of multiple classes

I'm trying to display an applet in an html page. I've had success doing this in the past, but now that I have more than one class in the applet, I seem to get an error every time I try to load the applet in an html page. For a bit, I was writing the html page by hand, but then I realized the applet viewer in netbeans (the IDE I'm coding in) created an html page for you, which is the same as the one I was coding. The application runs error-free when in the applet viewer, but the following message is displayed when I try to run it in the html page: java.lang.NullPointerException at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.findAppletJDKLevel(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException I tested another small, one class applet and it ran fine in the html page under the same conditions. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Vim or Emacs for software development

I'm getting a little exhausted using numerous IDE's for development (VS, XCode, Eclipse/Netbeans, and TextMate) and am looking for a replacement I can use on all the different machines I interact with. What are some of the pros of Vim/Emacs for things like Languages supported Syntax highlighting (for things such as c, objc-c, c#, java, python, haskell, html, javascript, xml etc...) Code completion Code folding Working with a directory of files (like have a solution/project opened) Possible debugger support What are some of the main things you like about (Emacs/Vim, and please no flames only what you really like) Thanks =) *(yes.. I have scoured the net reading this vs that etc. but I'd like more of a 'why you love it' vs 'this is better than that because...')

Are Java GUIs always slow to update or is it just me?

I've just started making my first GUI application in Java and I decided to use the NetBeans IDE to do it. I think its working fine so far, except for one problem; it seems to be slow updating the content of a window. Even in very simple windows with few controls I find that when - for example - closing or resizing a window, I get the normal window border working properly but the inside is completely see through for a second. It's not the biggest deal in the world, I just find it mildly annoying.

Apache 2.2 / Win7 - slow or not responsive

My configuration - Windows 7 x64, Php 5.3, Apache 2.2.15, latest Mysql. When loading pages from localhost, the response time shown by firebug is more 530ms for the main 'index.php' file, sometimes the connection is reset. It's painfully slow. I googled the problem and found a workaround - switch off and on again a win service called BFE - base filtering engine. Then everything works like a lightning but xdebug doesn't work in netbeans. Why is this response time so long? Can you think of any other solution than BFE toggling? joey33

I'm trying to create pagination for search results using MySQL and ColdFusion. My intention is to only retrieve the queries that can be displayed on a single page, thus making the process efficient. I tried using two queries in my function, but I could not return two variables to the cfinvoke. How to get cheap version control?

Hello, I'm a programmer, contractor, self experimenter and so on. I'd need to have cheap version control. I've been working with Subversion and recently with Mercurial. I've seen around many cheap hosting but, even if they are great (like BitBucket), many of them don't allow many private projects (1 or 2). Much of the code I need to keep on VC is not open, maybe because it is stuff I'm working on for clients, or maybe because it's code I usually need for my development, but it is not intended and usable as a open source project. Now, I've a cheap web hosting, with unlimited space and free mysql. I CAN'T install Mercurial or SVN on those machinese, but I was asking myself if is it there a way to use a common CVS with it, with "common" I mean something that has its good IDE plugins (Eclipse or Netbeans) that may avoid me to write commands by hand. Java - Could not find the main class?

I'm having a hard-time with a Java error. I'm getting this when double-clicking on my compiled project Jar file in order to run it: Could not find the main class: testPackage.testFrame. Program will exit. However, my main class is cleary defined in the project properties. Furthermore, everything works fine when I run the project directly from NetBeans. I'm using the ip2c.jar third-party library to determine countries from IP addresses. If I comment the class that is using the ip2c.jar file, I don't get the error. How can a third-party library be preventing the JVM from finding my main class?

Can folks that edit tags make sure they preserve the information that they would be editing away?

I have notice that some folks edit the tags associated with questions to make the tag more generic, like converting netbeans6.8-netbeans. I think this is a good thing. BUT, most users/askers do not include version info in the text of their question and some of them do pick the 'versioned' tag. That additional info is valuable at that point. Please read the question before you edit version info out of tags. If the version info is not in the question's text.... take another moment to edit the text of the question, so the info is immediately available to folks that are trying to answer questions.

Is there an editor that shows WYSIWYG comments?

Has anyone seen an editor/IDE that shows WYSIWYG comments inside the code? I have seen some that show the docs of an element in a separated tab/windows, but not together with code. For example, a JavaDoc comment would be much clearer and easier to edit if it had no tags and could be edited like a snippet from a normal text document. /** * Writes <code>Hello world!</code> to the <b>standard output</b>. * @seealso showGoodbye */ public static void showHello() { Could be something like this: /* Writes Hello world! to the standard output. See also: showGoodbye() */ public static void showHello() { but, editable, of course. slow php command line performance - is this normal or do I have an install problem?

I have a simple PHP app that prints 'hello world'. When I run it from the command line it takes 6 seconds. Is this normal? It seems to take 1 seconds before "hello world" prints, then 5 seconds after. I assume this is overhead of the interpreter. I am running PHP version 5.2.12 on Windows Server 2008 R2. Could this be an install issue, or is it typical? I did a manual install of PHP then added whatever components were needed to run Drupal. The only PHP addon I remember adding was MDB2, CGI support is there too. I am used to a Lua project I run from the command line, hundreds of lines of code that will run in under a second. I have some unit tests I run from the command line, and already with just a few they are very slow. I run them from Netbeans and the tests are still very slow.

Hi, This question may not be exactly programming related, but this is about development. I have been trying to find IDEs that support JIRA/Bugzilla so that I could simply integrate the IDE with SourceForge. I do not like to refresh my browser to see issues, bug reports, security problems, etc. I would like to send issues, resolve issues, right from the IDE. I am currently developing with NetBeans, but I see no ways of integrating into any of the services provided by SourceForge. Am I missing something?
