  I am a newbie on Amazon Web Service. I have a task that setup then build a web service that provide APIs to Mac OS, iOS, Android client. There are some APIs and Database need to be kept in secure. I see that AWS support multiple platform such as Java, .Net, PHP,... It also support many Database Management System. Not yet, there are 2 special SDK for Android and iOS app. So, What should I choose (Java, .Net, PHP,...) to carry out my task? Does AWS support all webservice protocol? • Running SQL*Plus with bash causes wrong encoding

  I have a problem with running SQL*Plus in the bash. This is working fine. My problem is that when I save the file script.sql my encoding goes wrong. All special characters(like íášc) are broken and that's causing inserting wrong characters into my DB. Encoding of that file is UTF-8, also UTF-8 is set on the XSQL page on our intranet. So I really don't know where could be a problem. And also any advices regarding to my script are welcomed, I am total newbie in Linux scripting:-)

• Using GlusterFS for simple replication

  Hi, newbie question. I need to build this: /shared folder ~500GB of files, ~1MB each one. Two boxes (server1 and server2) connected by a 1Gbs LAN Every box needs to get r/w access to the files, so their are both clients I want that the files replicated on both boxes, every time a file is written in one server the same file should be present in the other one. My questions regarding GlusterFS: It'll duplicate the files on the same box?. For example the files are on /shared and the mount in /mnt/shared. It'll take 1GB space on every server? Instead, should I use the filesystem directly, locally writing on /shared? Does the replication work in this way without mountin a client? Also, if anyone know any other way to acomplish this setup I'll be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

• debian mysql server always down

  I am hosting a mysql server in a debian 6.0.4 server hosted in linode, the new data is frequently written into the mysql server using R, about 30-40 "write" per minute, about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Recently I found that the mysql server seem to down frequently, always give me error that mysql server cannot be connected through socket. I wonder if this is caused by my high demand to my mysql server, and if this can be solved. I am definitely a newbie in manage server.   I am newbie with Apache's mod_rewrite and I'm having some difficulties getting it to do what I want. In my static directory, I have some javascript files (.js) with 2 kind of filename: xxxx.js which is the standard file name AT_xxxx.js (with prefixed filename) which has been duplicated from previous standard file name but also contains my customizations I would like to parse requests for each standard requested javascript file (xxxx.js) to check if a customized file exists (AT_xxxx.js) including all sub-directories. Then, in this case, use the custom file instead of the standard file (perhaps by internal redirect). I tried to figure this out for hours but something is still wrong. Note: Also, I don't know how to find custom files in sub-directories.   A few newbie OSX questions: Despite the fact that most applications can be installed by dragging them to the Applications directory, some software still requires the creation of a separate program folder. Where should I put this folder? Does it matter? Is the Applications directory special somehow, or is it just a convenient folder with a custom icon? If I move one of these program folders later on, will the program still work? Will shortcuts to files in the folder break? Is there something similar to a registry in OSX? Thanks!

  I am a linux newbie so excuse me if I ask silly things. I recently find out that if I edit GRUB before booting and I add rw init=/bin/bash I end up with a root shell. Being in a condition that I want to understand everything I would like to know why this happens. I mean is it a bug? is it a feature? is it there to help admins to fix things as it only works if you have physical access to a computer? Which part are we exploiting? GRUB or the actual kernel? I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. The router also provides 8 LAN ports to which the computers are connected. Shortly speaking, all computers are interconnected in a workgroup as opposed to a domain. My computer hosts an IIS web server using a private or local domain name www.mydomain.local. I has added 127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.local to the hosts file in the server C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc so I can browse the site from within the server. So far so good. How to make other computers connected to my workgroup able to browse my web server via my private local domain www.mydomain.local? Note: Again, I am a newbie. I have no idea what I should do next.

  Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver). • httpd.conf for case-insensitive file serving

  I'm a complete newbie with regard to managing Apache, so excuse me if I'm phrasing something incorrectly. I have a web site -- say, http://domain.com. The problem is that when I try to open http://domain.com/index.html in a web browser it displays the page, but when I attempt to access http://domain.com/Index.html (note capital I), it responds with HTTP 404. How do I configure Apache to serve both these files (and directories, for that matter) in a case-insensitive manner? Current httpd.conf is here. EDIT Dan C, thanks for a hint. I basically want to allow users to download files from my server and don't really want them to be aware that Index.html and index.html are in fact different. I'm also very willing to know as to what are the ramifications of this decision.

When i try to connect to bitbucket: ssh -Tv [email protected] I got the error - connection timed out. But when I disable iptables i can connect without any problems. What am i missing? Should I add any additional rules?

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

That is, instead of going to: http://myserver:8080/manager/html I would like that to be: http://myserver:8080/somesubdirectory/manager/html Is this possible? If yes, how can I achieve this? I would really appreciate any help in this. I've been trying to change the context of /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/manager.xml from /manager to /somesubdirectory/manager with no success. • Specify Credentials to run Powershell Script to Query AD

  I want to run a powershell script to query AD from a machine that is NOT on the domain. Basically I want to query to see if there is computer account already on the domain for this machine and create it if there is not. Because this has to happen before the machine joins the domain I assume I will need to specify some credentials to enable it to run. (I'm pretty new to Powershell, so apologies if this is a newbie question!) The script I am using to check the account is below, and then once this has run it will join the domain using the computername specified.
