• How to enforce a site-wide license?

  We have a small .Net program that we sell with individual licenses. The individual licenses are enforced by registering a key file that is generated using information from the machine used to install the program (MAC address, etc.) Now, we have a customer request for a site-wide license, such that they can deploy to as many machines on their site as possible. From the technical POV I'm not sure what are the usual approaches for this; our old approach won't work since we can't map the license to any machine-specific information. Any suggestions? A few more details: the program is a client-side program that includes an Office Add-In the machines to be installed on may or may not have internet access we aren't restricted to .Net-only approaches, I'm just looking for a general idea of how this sort of thing is usually handled

• How can I have a Windsor IoC container that can be shared amongst my classes but not shared across m

  I am building a set of class libraries that produce office open xml based reports and I am using a static Windsor IoC container. My problem is that one possible entry point to the reporting system is via a web front end which means that the reporting systems static IoC Container is being shared amongst multiple web requests which causes exceptions as for each new request the reporting system is trying re-register components in Windsor that were already registered by an earlier request. I dont want to move the registration into the web app global.asax as my reporting system will no longer be stand-alone. How can I have a Windsor IoC container that can be shared amongst my reporting classes but not shared across multiple web requests?

  We're gonna have a day when employees' kids will visit our company office. The idea is that they will come see "how parents work", "how cool stuff is done", have fun, etc. Kids will be up to 17 years old. Now I suppose some of the teenagers already think of what they wanna do when they finally grow up and will ask questions like "how can I tell I should get a degree in software engineering and not in logistics/finances/whatever?" So I think we better be prepared and ready to answer those questions so that those who really fit don't waste time but use their potential to the full.   Hi all, I have a simple class library written in c#. using System; namespace TestDll { public class Test { public string HelloWorld { get { return "Hello World"; } } } } My question is how can I call this HelloWorld function from Microsoft Office Visual Basic (which I think is VB6)? My first step was to add the DLL as a reference - but on browsing and selecting the compiled DLL the message "Can't add a reference to the specified file." was thrown.   Hi, I creating a program which send newsletter with a background image. It works fine on Office 2000-2003, thunderbird, but the background image does not show on Outlook 2007. I read that Microsoft changed the rendering engine and did not support the background css property (it is possible but only applied to the Body). Is it achievable to create an email which will render like that : http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?a7905f7d16.png on Outlook 2007 ? What is the solution ? Thank you for your help.

  Hi All Using CGPDFDocument class we can read pdf document, get number of pages, get a page by number. Is there any other library that helps us reading word documents like microsoft word doc where we can get number of pages and get a page by its number etc? Do not want to use safari to view the document. I have seen some apps on app store that claims to read MS Office docs like docx, xlsx etc. Does there exists any library [even static] that we can make use of? Any idea? Thanks Arnieterm

• Safari 4.0.5 will not play any HTML5 (H.264) video

  The html5test.com tells me that my browser does not support the <video> element, and when I try example page, I get the fallback message, usually "Your browser does not support HTML5 video." I know this should work in Safari. I am on Windows 7, 64-bit (running 32-bit Safari). Video works in Safari for everyone else in the office. (Windows 7 setup exactly like mine, Vista, OSX.) I have tries uninstalling, deleting all user preferences, and reinstalling. Anything else I should try?

  Not sure if this appropriate to put as a question or not? It's sort of a scripting question I think. Just down vote me if not :p Basically, what I'm looking for is a way to push a windows hotkey and have whatever text is in the clipboard be stripped of formatting. An example of what the macro could do: I push (whatever hotkey combo here) open notepad.exe Paste to notepad from clipboard Select all text in notepad Copy/Cut all text from notepad Close notepad I'm just wondering if someone has done something like this before, or knows how it could be accomplished. I think this could be a huge time-saver for almost anyone. I find myself doing this all the time when cutting and pasting between different office applications, etc.

• Excel can't remember how to copy/paste

  So, maybe someone else has an idea why this happens. I have a full-fledged version of Office 2007, works fine and all that jazz. However, if I try to copy and paste query results from SSMS, or anywhere else for that matter, I have to have an instance of Excel open and then paste. I can't copy, open Excel, and then paste. The little 'wait' circle pops up for a split second but nothing is pasted. I have never ran across this with any other program. Any good explanation for this? FFIW, it's Excel 2007 running in compatibility mode.

  I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

  Say I have eclipse installed in office and home. Both eclipse are 3.5 but may have slightly difference, like plugins version. I'd like to commit the code to online repo when get off work and then checkout at home. What would be a possible solution? github? sourceforge? Are they free? Would those slightly difference in eclipse cause any problem? Since I might commit whole project folder which consist some configurations. Can the community explain a bit or suggest some keyword? I will look up more online. Thanks.

Certain doc files do not convert well. Documents can be viewed in embedded Google docs viewer (https://docs.google.com/viewer). Certain doc files cannot be displayed. Little flexibility.   I'm lucky enough to share a room with 3 other people at work. One of them, a senior programmer who's very talkative in general, tends to ask me various questions throughout the day. While some of them are surely ' legitimate', many questions could have been answered by putting in just slightly more search effort on their part. I really don't mind be asked stuff, and I can also cope with beginner questions, but this is seriously interrupting my flow. I clearly remember Joel talking about how private offices increase productivity because they prevent too easy questions from being asked. How should I deal with this situation? Getting a private office is out of the question, sadly. It's difficult to approach him directly, and he blissfully ignored the slight hints I tried to give.

  Hello, I'm working on PowerPoint Add-In and I was faced with trouble I couldn't solve myself. The point is I need to change the slide Layout programmaticaly with C# (the Add-In Express 2009 for Office and .NET is used). If the new layout is a predefined one everything is fine but I need to set a custom layout as a new one (without slide recreating). Unfortunately, I didn't find any information on how to do it, PowerPoint object model reference documentation didn't answer me as well. There is just the ability to create a new slide that uses custom layout. I've done an experiment seria and have ensured that the Slide object stayed being the same while I have been changing layout both predefined and custom ones. I don't want to create a new slide when I need just switch the layout. Is it possible at all? Please help me to find a way of doing it. Thanks in advance.

Both of these things seemed pretty ubiquitous across the corporate software world, however I recently visited a few companies that use PHP/Ruby and nearly all their devs had facial piercings/visible tattoos, etc. and their offices had no apparent dress code. This might sound funny, but it made me wonder, is there any correlation between specific technology and office culture?   What might be said or implied at an interview or job posting that should set off alarm bells for a coder? I'm still only a few years in the industry but I already know to look out for excessive red tape and bureaucracy. Cubes and a noisy office also tell me that I'll be both miserable and unproductive and that management does not appreciate what coders need to work well. Edit: The way things are going I'm taking extra time to look at the company's stability. If they depend on a single vendor for their livelihood and could be out of business if the vendor decides they don't really need the service or can do it in-house. What are your dealbreakers?

• Make backup of large site with 100,000+ files/images

  I tried backing up our site today using the Unix 'cp' command and ended up getting our office blocked out by PLESK - it added my ip to /etc/hosts.deny as it thought I was flooding the server. After Tech support fixed the issue, they suggested I go folder by folder to back it up, but there's about 10,000 folders on the site totaling 1/2 a terabyte, each with multiple sub-folders, so this isn't viable. Basically I want to be able to mirror the domain on another domain we've got set up on the same dedicated server so I can test with live images (the bulk of our content). Any suggestions e.g adding some rules to open_base_dir and getting PHP to recursively copy the folders to the other domain (remember it's on the same dedicated box so it just needs to traverse the directory, not FTP things).

• Build common interface for two applications(one is in .asp, other in java)

One application in .asp and second application in java. we want to build interface for universal authentication, so that one can access the other application once signed into one application. Both applications are using SQL database, but one is written in .ASP hosted on Windows server while the other is in JAVA hosted on a Linux server. The applications are currently resided on two different servers. requirements: 1)The end user are most likely to access the applications through .ASP first, then reach the 2nd application more like "back office" management system. 2)he JAVA application currently works well with IE web browser, but not very smooth with other browsers such as Firefox. Would like to make the application to be more compatible with other browsers. Please help me, its very important to me. Thanks in advance!

• vcxproj file won't load into solution.

  We've just recently switched to VS 2010 and i had a solution that was working fine. This moring when i try to load the solution i get the error: "An item with the same key has already been added." This occurs when it is trying to load one of our main projects and it is not loaded. I assumed the problem was with my solution so i created a brand new empty solution and tried to load the same vcxproj and got exactly the same error. When i revert the project file to a previous version it works, so apparently it's something in the vcxproj file. However it also appears that i'm the only one in the office that is affected. So some combination of the vcxproj file and my computer seems to be the issue. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas on a solution? Thanks

• Trying to get excel 2003 into already made windows form

  good afternoon everyone :) I got sucha dilemma! (hate being new at stuff!) What my problem is is that I have a project that is in full design mode swing right now. I built it using the Windows form.. Anyways, on one of my forms..that I already started building (very painstakingly).. Minds have changed and now what needs to be on that form is either a full excel 2003 workbook..or at the very least..excel worksheet. The problem is that I have not been using studio 2008 for long..and coding experience shows the same. Can someone please tell me how the heck I can put a worksheet or a workbook on that form without starting my whole project over using office forms? Please..go slow with this newbie cuz i really dont know anything and Jargon is confusing me even more :( thanxxXXX :)
