• Mikrotik queues and limiting total upstream bandwidth

  With a Mikrotik router (form of embedded Linux) I have created simple queues per machine matched by source IP address. Each of the 4 machine queues has an unlimited burst 3Mbps/3Mbps for Tx/Rx. During speedtest.net on all 4 machines at the same time, each machine shows 3Mbps (and is limited correctly there), however the total bandwidth on the uplink goes to 12Mbps (i need to set this to 10Mbps max for the upstream). I want to restrict the actual traffic passing across the uplink port to 10Mbps regardless of what the other queues are doing (I need this catch all queue to have the final say on the uplink speed). For example I need: Scenario A Machine A transferring @ 3Mbps Machine B transferring @ 3Mbps Machine C transferring @ 3Mbps Machine D transferring @ 0Mbps Up-link speed = 9Mbps Scenario B Machine A trying to transfer @ 3Mbps Machine B trying to transfer @ 3Mbps Machine C trying to transfer @ 3Mbps Machine D trying to transfer @ 3Mbps Up-link speed = 10Mbps Actual transfer speed of machine A,B,C,D = 2.5Mbps This is to allow slight over subscription of bandwidth queues as not all will be transmitting at 3Mbps all the time. Is this possible and if so how would one go about doing this?

• httpd service keep restarting. after 15-20 mins

  I have recently purchased Dedicated Server which has 16bg ram and 1TB Harddisk. It has Cpanel and for firewall CSF Installd. I am mainly going to install it for File hosting service. Now the day i moved my httpd service keep restarting every 15-20 mins. It becomes unresponsive after that so have to manually restart it. My httpd settings are Start Servers = 5 Minimum Spare Servers = 5 Maximum Spare Servers = 10 Server Limit = 20000 Max Clients = 10000 Max Requests Per Child = 10000 Keep-Alive = On Keep-Alive Timeout = 5 Max Keep-Alive Requests = Unlimited Timeout 300 TOP is top - 14:53:41 up 1 day, 23:39, 2 users, load average: 0.10, 0.14, 0.09 Tasks: 1563 total, 1 running, 1562 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.7%us, 0.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 98.1%id, 0.2%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.5%si, 0.0%st Mem: 16303780k total, 16142048k used, 161732k free, 135264k buffers Swap: 8224760k total, 868k used, 8223892k free, 14136616k cached Please help me in this its keep happning.

• Sync Music to External Hard Drive with Windows Media Player

  I'd like to sync my music from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive. Windows Media Player doesn't recognize my USB external hard drive as a syncable device. If I plug in any USB flash drive, it shows up as a device, but I can't seem to get it to recognize my external hard drive. Per some googling suggestions, the only suggestion I came across was to try enabling the "Portable Device Enumerator" service, but that yielded no luck. Is there any way to sync my music from WMP to an external hard drive?

• Upgrading from MySQL Server to MariaDB

  I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues?   I'm looking for peoples opinion on wireless music streaming devices - something like this. I have an iTunes library hosted on an ubuntu server and I'm looking for something to allow me to listen to all the albums stored on it. Ideally, it should provide a good quality playback both over headphones and through speakers so that everyone can hear it. It doesn't need to be ultra-portable - being able to move the system and plug in a mains lead should be enough, so a single, integrated unit is preferable. • nodejs server hanging from time to time

  I have a node server (0.6.6) running an Express application, along with Mongoose and s3, on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine. Several times per hour, the server is hanging. That means that the application is working fine, I see the express loggings, and then all of a sudden the server stops responding. No errors, no traces, no loggings, and strangely enough the browser won't show the request even in the network debugging window. From any machine in the local network it's the same behaviour. I restart the server and it's okay again for several minutes, then again starts to hang, everytime while doing something different. The same application on Amazon on the same Ubuntu version works fine and never hangs. I know all this is kind of vague, but I don't know where to start. Has any of you seen something like this before? Any idea?

  as per the CentOS FAQ on removing 32-bit packages present in a 64-bit install, is it safe to perform the last step: You may also want to do this: yum reinstall \* The reason is that sometimes the /usr/share/ items (shared between BOTH packages) get removed when removing the 32-bit RPM packages. on an existing installation? (i.e. where data & settings of possibly affected applications need to be preserved) rpm -Va shows a number of entries like: /sbin/ethtool: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /sbin/ethtool /usr/libexec/mysqld: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /usr/libexec/mysqld along with /usr/share entries with T flag (apparently filetime diff, seems safe) The machine is up & running fine, but may not be whenever a reboot occurs. • GhostScript noob help - Breaking a multipage PDF file into many single page PS or EPS files.

  Hi, I'm trying to do the following with ghostscript: Turn one multipage PDF file (about 3,000 pages, 200mb file) into: One file per page of the PDF, and convert each (page/file) to EPS or PS (post script(preferably)). Example: hello.pdf (10 pages) would produce: hello1.ps (page 1 out of 10) hello2.ps hello3.ps ... hello10.ps How can I do this? I've been trying for 4 days, and can't figure it out. I have a script I've tried(won't work): Note: Windows(7) user here. gs -sDEVICE=epswrite -o documentname-%.eps documentname.pdf I also don't know how to navigate to the directory where my file resides (cannot figure that out, too). • How do i mitigate DDOS attacks on static servers?

  Here is a slightly different take on DDOS attacks. Rather than a server with dynamic content being attack i was curious how to deal with attacks on servers with STATIC CONTENT. This means cpu tends to not be an issue. Its either bandwidth or connection problems. How would i mitigate a DDOS attack knowing nothing about the attacker (for example country, ip address or anything else). I was wondering is shorting the timeout and increasing amount of connections is an acceptable solution? Or maybe that is completely useless? Also i would limit the amount of connections per IP address. Would the above help or be pointless? Keeping in mind everything is static checking for multiple request of the same page (html, css, js, etc) could be a sign of a attack. What are some measures i can take on a static content server?

• On Windows 7, how do I fix my cmd.exe icon and remove cruft from the jumplist

  Hi. When installing drivers for my Gigabyte motherboard, I installed a "Games" link which ran from a batch file. This was pinned to the taskbar by default. As a result, it changed the icon for cmd.exe to the icon for Games. I uninstalled the Games and it got rid of the icon leaving it with a white rectangle thing (I can post screenshots on request). There is also a link on the jumplist to open Games, which just opens a cmd window. I've tried rebuilding my icon cache as per Changing Windows 7 pinned taskbar icons, but this only removed the white rectangle icon, leaving me with no real icon. c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe still has the appropriate icon in explorer, just not on the taskbar. Any ideas on how to fix this annoyance?

• Recommended SMTP Relay Service [closed]

  I've got a legacy application that needs an smtp server to relay emails. Each client has various control over their IT infrastructures (from little to none at all), so I can't necessarily install an smtp server on each of their machines. Can anyone recommend a basic SMTP Relay Service? Its literally only for sending a couple of emails a day to a list of about 20 users per client. The application only allows for the smtp server and to/from addresses to be specified. I'm assuming its using the default port. Thanks!

  I have 2x servers with the following OS's and Control Panels: Windows Server 2003 running Plesk 9 Centos 5.3 running WHM/cPanel The Windows server 2003 server is hosting the two nameservers: ns1.domain.com ns2.domain.com I have BIND running on the Centos 5.3 server, but I wish for my customers to use the same nameservers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com (as per the Windows Server 2003 server). My first question is - is this possible? And if so, how would I go about configuring both servers to enable such a configuration? Thanks very much.

• Does a bad Internet connection increase bandwidth usage?

  My (Rogers) cable connection has been pretty bad recently (channels 3 and 10 are particularly fuzzy—it’s analog, not digital cable). Not surprisingly, this has caused my cable modem to drop out and have to reestablish a connection a couple of times since it started. The poor connection of course means higher corruption (not necessarily dropped per se) which causes the TCP/IP stack to have to retransmit packets more often. Reduction of bandwidth throughput aside, I got to wondering if it increases the actual bandwidth usage. That is, if there is a high error rate on the line causing packets to have to be retransmitted: Does this increase a bandwidth monitoring program’s numbers? Does the ISP count the retransmitted packets toward the monthly cap? Based on what I remember from my university networking courses and common sense, I have a feeling that the answer to both questions is yes, but I cannot reliably measure the first, and have no authoritative answer for the second. I’m wondering if maybe the retransmitted packets are acknowledged as being duplicates and thus not counted somewhere along the line.

  On my Debian Linux machine Ctrl+Alt+F1 is bound to a virtual terminal. I can see the corresponding entry by running xmodmap -pke keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 Per this thread, which I might add is consistent with what I've read elsewhere, the columns on the right hand side of = correspond to key, Shift+key, AltGr+key and Shift+AltGr+key. Given that, I don't understand how the keycode mapping for F1 (above) works for Ctrl+Alt+F1. It seems it should really be either Shift+F1 or Shift+AltGr+F1? • Why can't gif images copy at a reasonable speed on this dell laptop with XP?

  I've got this somewhat old Dell Latitude D810. Strangest thing... If I try to copy anything that has gif files in it the gif files take forever. Like a few minutes per gif regardless of size. Everything else copies fine. I notice this when copying files off our network, copying off multiple external drives, and even when files are copying during an installation process. I'm on Windows XP Pro service pack 3. I've never seen anything like this before. Anyone else?

The server send to client 3KB of data, instead of traditional HTTP or SOCKS proxy, the server open multithreaded transfer with 3 connections, send 1KB of data per thread to each connection The client receives 1KBx3, and combine them to the original 3KB data, and return as a local HTTP proxy server. The client display the original data in browser via the local HTTP proxy The latency is not important as long as the transfer rate is good. Does any software like this exist? It's better if it's open source or free ones.

• Misbehaving Network Printers - options?

  We are having some issue with printers on our network. We have 3 floors, 2 printers per floor (A3 & A4) all connected to the same Print Server. The issue is that the same printer may not behave the same on two different, seemingly identical desktops. The commonest place this is seen on our bulk print script in AutoCAD - occasionally drawings may print Landscape on Portrait paper, despite drawings always being Landscape... Does any one have any suggestions on what we can check / try? The current line of attack is to setup a new Print Server, with the HP universal print driver rather than the device specific drivers, and replace printers using exactly the same method on all desktops. Sound good?

• Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

  In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

There are DDOs attacks to web servers, which mostly give them so much concurrent loads or connections that service get unavailable. Many government or non-profit organizations that suffered this kind of attacks, eventually could choose to shutdown their web server and that's it, waiting for these attacks to end. For a DDOs attacks to PBX, I imagine that it would result in telephones getting busy or ringing all the time unstoppably. This kind of attack could really damage any kind organization. Is it possible to do that or are we just in the beginnings?

• Setup CENTOS Centralized AUDIT and RSYSLOG server

  Attempting to use these links: Sending audit logs to SYSLOG server or http://wiki.rsyslog.com/index.php/Centralizing_the_audit_log I have been unable to get centralized AUDIT logging to work on my ALL-CentOS network environment. I have 6 workstations dt1...dt6, and the log files are not generated at all and I cannot tell if the messages are being sent from these workstations: dt1..dt6 over to the server (srv1). I have configured the rsyslog.conf on the workstations as shown in the link: Sending audit logs to SYSLOG server, and add the additional touches for generating the logfiles into a separate directory per YEAR/MONTH/DAY (using proper syntax) and into separate HOSTNAME-based_audit.log files. Note: RSYSLOG messaging does appear to work from the workstations over to the server, but the audit logging portion is not working. I am running CentOS-6.5 with RPMs: audit-2.2-4.el6_5.x86_64, audit-libs-2.2-4.el6_5.x86_64, and rsyslog-5.8.10-8.el6.x86_64 I have gotten zero responses from wiki.rsyslog.com and really need this to work. If needed I can send files of one of my workstations and the server to aid in the process. Thanks, Warron

  Currently I have all of my deployment scripts in shell, which installs about 10 programs and configures them. The way I see it shell is a fantastic tool for this: Modular: Only one program per script, this way I can spread the programs across different servers Simple: Shell scripts are extremely simple and don't need any other software installed One-click: I only have to run the shell script once and everything is setup Agnostic: Most programmers can figure out shell, and don't need to know how to use a specific program. Versioning: Since my code is on github a simple git pull and restart all of supervisor will run my latest code. My question is, with all of these advantages, why is it people are constantly telling me to use a tool such as ansible or chef, and not to use shell.

• Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

Suppose I have more than a network interfaces and I want to selectively use them per application. eth0 is the standard interface with the standard gateway in the main routing table eth1 is another interface with a different gateway. Suppose I launch an application as a user "user_eth1". I used the following set of rules for iptables / ip rules. IPTABLES: iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -m user --uid-owner user_eth1 -j MARK --set-mark 100 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -m user -uid-owner -o eth1 user_eth1 -j SNAT --to-source <eth_ipaddress> IPRULE: ip rule add fwmark 100 lookup table100 and i build "table100" as follows (no doubts on that) ip route show table main | grep -Ev ^default | while read ROUTE; do ip route add table table100 $ROUTE; done ip route add default via <default_gateway> table table100 It doesn't work at all. • Why does PsExec hang after successfully running a powershell script?

  The script is fairly straight forward. Simply tries to start a bunch of windows services. Execution locally works fine when on the target machine. The script is actually executing fine as well when done via PsExec, it just never returns until I hit the "enter" key on my CMD prompt. This is a problem, because this is being called from TeamCity, and it makes the Agent hang waiting for PsExec to return. I've tried the following: Adding an exit and exit 0 at the end of the Powershell script Adding a < NUL to the end of the PsExec call, per the answer in this SF question Adding a > stdout redirect This is how I am actually calling psexec: psexec \\target -u domain\username -p password powershell c:\path\script.ps1 No matter what I do, it hangs until I the locally on the cmd prompt. After I hit enter, I get the message: powershell exited on target with error code 0.
