  • Package manager borked with gforge

    I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists...     I've noticed an error from dmesg output that ubuntu canot enable ASPM: [ 0.192722] pci0000:00: ACPI _OSC support notification failed, disabling PCIe ASPM [ 0.192728] pci0000:00: Unable to request _OSC control (_OSC support mask: 0x08) While I know that this is not a bug, I'd like to ask if there is a way to correct it and enable ASPM, the reason being that it should increase battery life (powertop shows that PCIe is always 100% on). Edit: I am running on an ASUS eee pc 1015px with the latest bios version (1401)

  • postfix smtpd rejecting mail from outside network match_list_match: no match

    My postfix (V: 2.5.5-1.1) running on ubuntu server (9.04) started to reject mail arriving in from outside about 2 weeks ago. Doing a "manual" session via telnet shows that the connection is always closed after the MAIL FROM: [email protected] line is input, with the message "Connection closed by foreign host." Doing the same from another client inside the LAN works fine. In the log files I get the line "lost connection after MAIL from xxxxx.tld[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]" This is after some lines like: match_hostaddr: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX ~? [::1]/128 match_hostname: XXXX.tld ~? 192.168.1.0/24 ... match_list_match: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: no match which seem to suggest some kind of filter which checks for allowed addresses. I have been unable to locate where this filter lives, or how to turn it off. I'm not even sure if that's what's causing my problem. Connections from inside the LAN don't get disconnected even though they also show a "match_list_match: ... no match" line. I didn't change any configuration files recently, below is my main.cf as it currently stands. I don't really know what all the parameters do and how they interact.   • Is there a Linux-compatible R/C simulator that works with real radios?

    My Dad flies radio-controlled (R/C) aircraft. He used to run a simulator called "RealFlight" which allowed him to connect his actual radio to his computer and fly simulated craft. He learned enough to fly actual planes, but he wants to move up from "trainer" aircraft to higher-performance craft. After some crashes, he'd like to go back to the simulator for a while. The catch: he's given up Windows and is now running Ubuntu. Question: is there an R/C flight simulator that Runs on Ubuntu? Allows you to connect your radio and use it to control the simulator, preferably through a USB port?

    When I first got Ubuntu and got used to it, I decided to install lots of packages, and I overwhelmed the update manager. I had to interrupt it, because the download time was crazy long. That was 2 years ago. I haven't been able to upgrade anything since then. But now, some things I need will not work in my 2-year-old version of Firefox. I want to cancel all of the package installations that I started, and was not able to finish, and I need to upgrade Firefox. What should I do?

    I was reading a book about XP programming and about agile teams. While I was reading, I saw this scenario. I've never worked with a development team (just in school). So I would like what do you opine on this situation: Your boss has asked you to deliver software in a time that can only be possible to meet the project team asking if you want to work overtime without pay. All team members have young children. Discuss whether it should accept this request from your boss or should persuade the team to give their time to the organization rather than their families. What could be significant factors in the decision? As a programmer, you are offered an upgrade as project manager, but his feeling is that you can have a more effective contribution in a technical role in one administrative. Write when you should accept that promotion. Somethimes, I sacrifice my free time for accomplishing hits at work, so it's very important to me to know your opinion base of your experience.

  • How do I get security updates for restricted/partner packages?

    I want to perform just security updates on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, keeping the rest of the system unchanged. I need to do this from the command line, no the GUI update manager. I have implemented the solution described here, which seems to work great for this purpose. I merely substituted 'precise' for 'lucid' given that I am on 12.04. My question is: by using apt pinning as described in that answer, will I still receive security updates for packages distributed through the "other" repositories - partner, restricted, multiverse, etc? Or will it only get me updates for the packages in the "core" distribution? thanks! ~l

    We have to admit that programming is much more difficult than creating documentation or even creating Gantt chart and asking progress to programmers. So for us that are naives, knowing that programming is generally more difficult, why do business analysts and project managers get higher salary than programmers? What is it that makes their job a high paying job when even at most times programmers are the ones that go home late? UPDATE Excuse my ignorance, from some of the response it seems that the reason why BAs and PMs gets higher salary because they are the ones that usually responsible for the mess programmers make. But at the end of the day, it is programmers that get their hands dirty to fix the mess and work harder. So it still does not make sense.

    I study programming by myself.I have learn servel programming languages. but I never write a project more than 1000 lines. I know the best way to improve programming skills is practise. The problem is many books, just talk about the programming language, or talk about build a project from a high level. Fews of books will teach how to build a middle scale project. For example, I want to build a simple HTTP Server(Nor like Apache or just a simple listenr to a port), a Markdown Parser, or a download tools just like emule or wget. I don't know what to do. I may found peaces of code in the web, or found familiar project in the Github. I don't know how to read the code. I want to some tutorial that can told me how to build the project step by step, teacher me how to write thousands lines of code. Any suggest?

    Say your company is committed (and don't want to consider not doing this) to sharing/pooling a development team across a handful of business units. What would you setup as concerns/expectations that must be cleared before doing this? For example: Need agreement between units on how much actual time (FTE) is allocated to each unit Need agreement on scheduling of staff need agreement on request procedure if extra time is required by one party etc... Have you been in a situation like this as a manager of one unit destined to use this? If so, what were problems you experienced? What would you have or did implement? Same if you were the manager of the shared team. Please assume, for discussion, that the people concerned know that you can swap devs in and out on a whim. I don't want to know the disadvantages of this approach; I know them. I want to anticipate issues and know how to mitigate the fallout.

  • Unit and Integration testing: How can it become a reflex

    All the programmers in my team are familiar with unit testing and integration testing. We have all worked with it. We have all written tests with it. Some of us even have felt an improved sense of trust in his/her own code. However, for some reason, writing unit/integration tests has not become a reflex for any of the members of the team. None of us actually feel bad when not writing unit tests at the same time as the actual code. As a result, our codebase is mostly uncovered by unit tests, and projects enter production untested. The problem with that, of course is that once your projects are in production and are already working well, it is virtually impossible to obtain time and/or budget to add unit/integration testing. The members of my team and myself are already familiar with the value of unit testing (1, 2) but it doesn't seem to help bringing unit testing into our natural workflow. In my experience making unit tests and/or a target coverage mandatory just results in poor quality tests and slows down team members simply because there is no self-generated motivation to produce these tests. Also as soon as pressure eases, unit tests are not written any more. My question is the following: Is there any methods that you have experimented with that helps build a dynamic/momentum inside the team, leading to people naturally wanting to create and maintain those tests?

  • Delta-update Firefox Aurora package from PPA

    I am using Firefox Aurora in my Ubuntu 12.04 which I have installed via its ppa (ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/firefox-aurora). As expected of Aurora, I get an update usually after 2-3 days. I have Firefox Aurora installed in Windows too. There also I get updates in 2-3 days but size of update is usually 4-5 MB, while in Ubuntu it's always around 20 MB. What is the reason for this difference? Is there any way by which I can download and install only the changes and not the entire Aurora again and again?

  • Retain only dependencies of a given package

    I am trying to have a minimal version of Ubuntu, having only those packages necessary to run mininet. So, I would like a solution, where I would be able to uninstall all the packages from the system, except those that are needed to run mininet. A much more preferable solution would be to be able to create a new ISO, with mininet and all it's dependencies. Is there any program out there which is already capable of this? If not please guide me on how I can solve my problem? Note: I need to retain not only the direct dependencies of mininet, but also dependencies of dependencies and so on. The final system should be able to run mininet without a hitch.

  • Synchronizing files between Linux servers, through FTP

    I have the following configuration of servers: 1 central linux server, a VPS 8 satellite linux servers, "crappy shared hostings" I have a bunch of files that I need to have in all servers. Right now i'm copying them everywhere manually, but I want to be able to copy them to the central server, and then have a scheduled process that runs every now and then and synchronizes them (only outwardly, no need to try to find "new" files in the satellite servers). There are a couple of catches though: I can't have any custom software in the satellite servers, or do strange command line things that'll auto connect to them and send the files directly. I know this is the way these kinds of things are normally done, but the satellite servers are crappy shared hosting ones where I have absolutely no control over anything. I need to send the files over FTP I also need to have, in my central server, a list of the files that are available in each of the satellite servers, to make sure they are ready before I send traffic to them. If I were to do this manually, the steps would be: get the list of files in a satellite server compare to my own, and send the files that are missing get the list of files again, and store it in my central database. I'd like to know what tools are out there that can alleviate as much of this as possible, first the syncing, and then the "getting the list of files available in the other server". I'm going to be doing everything from PHP, not sure if there are good tools to "use FTP from PHP", which i'm pretty sure i'll have to do for step 3 at least. Thanks in advance for any ideas! Daniel

    Hi, What are the main guidelines to setting up a user account on a Linux machine for a web app? In my case it is a Rails application that does file management. First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider? I've heard of ACL's and SELinux, do I need to look into any of these to guaranty decent security for my simple web app? Any advice about this and anything not mentioned welcomed, Thanks, Max.     I installed Ubuntu 11.10 today on my Lenovo w500. After that when i tried running sudo apt-get update This is the error i am getting. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files. You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. I found the following similar question : Errors while updating Ubuntu 11.10 , But the solutions mentioned ( changing the download server, running apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean) and have also tried removing the /var/cache/apt/archives/lists direcotry. As a result of this, I am unable to install any new packages.

  • Why can't I refresh the list of packages?

    This might be a duplicate, but I can't find a solution in other posts. Whenever I try to update I get this message: ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR###ERROR E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/listspackages.medibuntu.org_dists_quantal_free_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I have tried runnig this in the terminal: sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf sudo apt-get update It doesn't work at all. I cant even open the software sources and "sudo apt-get check" gives me this message: Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/packages.medibuntu.org_dists_quantal_free_i18n_Translation-en E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. UPDATE: solution for me was to remove the medibuntu-keyring through synaptic manager and removed mediubuntu from the software sources too manually. This seems to have solved the problem. The update manager doesnt give me any error messages anymore.

    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? Hello. Now I am using easy writing pad for scratches while doing some researches, solving troubles or doing workarounds. But.. you now, it's really difficult to remember all details of founded solution and it's alternatives after few months. And writing pad is not wery useful. Usually writing pad doesn't contains half of needed inforation: links founded in internet, output of some test commands and etc. Now I'am looking for a tool for storing information about my researches and it's results. Basic reqirements: ability to store files; ability to store formatted text (kind of HTML will be nice) with hyperlinks and code snippets; tags on notes; easy to use. Now I'am thinking about some kind of file-system organized storage, but I think it will be inconvenient. Another thinks is local wiki or blog. So, my question is: How do you organize you knowlege base? What tools do you use, and what "pros and cons".

  • Does Ubuntu Touch consume less than Android?

    One of the problems of new OSs is power consumption. That is because power and performance requires a lot of tweaks and experience with the kernel, drivers and OS code-base on one hand, and a lot of extensive long-term test and quality assurance on the other hand. Given that Android is a rather old and established OS I saw that it has pretty good power consumption. Phoronix does this kind of comparissions but I was not able to find to much about Ubuntu Touch. Does Ubuntu Touch consume less than Android in general, do you have data on some platforms compared?
