• My Hard Disk Drive is not visible until I use it

  So, suddenly something went wrong. At the beggining of my Ubuntu usage it was all right, but from about 2-4 weeks I've got this problem: Whenever I try to reach my HDD, i have to open it first by files explorer. Example: I use text editor. Last file fails to load, so I got to open it manually. It's in bookmarked file. I want to reach my bookmark, which is on HDD(partition for both Ubuntu and Windows , NTFS). If i want to reach my bookmark, i have to go there manually(or at least to HDD, then bookmarks pops up). It also doesn't appear at my side bar until i use it. It kinda looks like it wasn't mounted till then, I don't know. It would be nice if I could deal with it, let's say, automatically. Thanks in advance.

• How to proxy with apache site from same domain but another port as a subfolder?

  So I have a problem - I have my main site on apache web server on debian on port 80; I develop a web server (in some C++ or C#) and it currently runs on port 6666. But some people are living under firewalls and can access only port 80. I wonder if it is possible via apache map all requests to say mysite.com:80/6666/url as if they were to mysite.com:6666/url, not map via redirection, but really make apache stream content from my site to user as if it were in some folder?

  I have Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.Also I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a separate drive.I want to install Adobe Master Collection CS6 on Ubuntu 12.10.I tried using wine but what wine does is,it just installs the software & doesn't allow me to use it.While I click on any Adobe product say Adobe Photoshop & hit enter to run it it pops out an error message. How should I tackle this?Is there any other software apart from virtual Machine Ware or Wine to install & successfully run Adobe Master Collection CS6 in Ubuntu 12.10?

• What is the best way to launch a website to make it go viral?

  Say for example I have a website that has finished BETA and is ready for full launch. I'm at the stage now I want it to be very visible to start getting traffic. Right now, I am just getting some random search engine hits, word of mouth and a few referrals. How do I break out of this and really get some serious traffic to my site? Do I need to launch a huge ad-campaign? If so, what is the best/most cost effective way to do this? I have tried google adwords but at $0.45+ a click this jsut isn't practical for what I have.

• How to quantify product work in Resume?

  One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

  I'm thinking of continuing my education and going for masters degree. I must decide between two programs. One is CS/IT and focuses on algorithms, math, multimedia, web technologies with optional interesting courses like AI and robotics. Second is about business process management, software architecture and project management. I have some experience in business software and I must say, I never though I need deeper understating of algorithms or program language but I always felt that I'm lacking in project planing or management knowledge. On the other side, CS/IT looks more interesting but what are the chances to find a job that require such skills?

• Avoiding "double" subscriptions

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• Are the Ralink RT3090 drivers incompatible with Ubuntu 10.10?

  Ralink Technology publishes their drivers in source code form on their website here. When complied with make and make install in 10.04, the drivers worked well in 32 and 64 bit versions of Lucid. However, when compiled for the 64 bit version of Maverick, it does not work at all, and 32 bit Maverick, it works but randomly disconnects. Both versions of Maverick say "[Proprietary] Driver is activated but not in use" in the Proprietary Drivers dialog. Do the drivers just need to be updated? Is there an easy fix?

• Should I learn WPF? Is it a good time investment? [closed]

  First I should say this is a copy of this question. I am a C# developer, not an expert, but still learning and growing. I want to learn WPF so I can creat application with nice UI. However I am afraid that, after I spend my time learning it, it is gonna be obselete, you know with windows 8 and metro application and stuff, so my question is: At this pint of time, would it be a good time investment to learn WPF? or will I be better off learning Metro?   JavaFX 2.1.1 released on June 12, and few documents were updated on the docs.oracle.com/javafx website. Besides a new set of release documentation, the Concurrency in JavaFX article was updated with a discussion of how to cancel a task, with a code sample to illustrate that. A new section describes the WorkerStateEvent class and how to use the convenience methods such as cancelled, failed, running, scheduled, and succeeded, which are invoked when the Worker implementation state changes. Other documents were updated to reflect minor bug fixes, many of them contributed by JavaFX readers using the feedback alias in the sidebar of all of our documentation. Yes, we do respond and pay attention to what you say and at least try to point you in the right direction if we can't solve a problem you're having with a tutorial. We appreciate your feedback!

• Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distros which uses least system resources (RAM, CPU)?

  I have a netbook (an older Asus EEEPC 1005HA) which I want to get rid of Windoze on (I like Windows, but I don't think it works well in a netbook environment). Basically, my question is which Ubuntu variant will use the least RAM and CPU running idle, and/or the same question except when running Firefox and Libreoffice Writer, say. I am also open to suggestions of non-Ubuntu Linux distros, but since this is AskUbuntu I thought the first question would be more appropriate. I have a disk drive which I can attach to the netbook, so it doesn't have to be a Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distro which solely boots from a USB drive. I have at my disposal: DVDs, DVD writer/ disk drive, 4gb flash drive, 8 gb flash drive I was thinking either Lubuntu or Archbang / Crunchbang but I would like some help from more knowledgable people Specs: Can't boot into it right now, but I think I have either Intel Atom N270 @1.60ghz OR Intel Atom N280 @1.66ghz (single core, I think) 2gb RAM 160 GB hard drive

• Should I change the name in the WTFPL?

  I'm using the WTFPL in my personal projects published on GitHub. Currently I'm using it verbatim, but I have the suspicion I shouldn't be leaving Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar <[email protected]> in there, and instead should use my name. But the license is very confusing about this. Half of the WTFPL is about the WTFPL itself, so I thought that copyright might refer to a copyright on the license text itself, and not on the project this is licensing. Also, it says Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long as the name is changed. So would I have to change the name, from WTFPL to, say, "WTFPL-Domenic"?

• HP dv2700 series, Wifi not working in Ubuntu 12.10, Wifi Button always disabled

  I have a HP dv2745se laptop. I always had Ubuntu with the Native Windows Vista and Wifi worked fine. Suddenly my Ubuntu wouldn't load anymore, I tried fixing it for a week and eventually I formatted its partition and just installed Ubuntu 12.10 This laptop has a Wifi switch that works fine in Vista disabling / enabling the wireless connection. HP Wireless Assistant in Windows say Wireless is on. However, whenever I log in Ubuntu the Wifi button is always orange (disabled) and Wireless never works. I had this problem once when I had Ubuntu 12.04 and I fixed it by verifying in Windows that the Wireless Assistant showed the Wireless LAN in "On" mode. However, the same does not work now. I've seen some possible solutions that involve updating the firmware with apt-get. There comes my 2nd problem, my network adapter card is not working and thus I have no internet at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Tab autocomplete in terminal is not behaving properly

  There's something odd about my autocomplete in the gnome terminal. I used to be able to type cp Downtab to get cp Downloads/, and then type Jettab to end up with cp Downloads/Jet\ Pack\ Instructions.pdf But now, when I have cp Down typed and hit tab, I get cp Downloads with a space afterwards. And if I backspace that and make it say cp Downloads/Jet and hit tab, I get cp Downloads/Jet Pack Instructions.pdf without the backslashes. It wasn't like this before. How do I fix this? EDIT: There's a problem with my /etc/bash_completion file, it seems. Just not sure what.

I'm not sure what the problem was, but I'll lick my wounds and wait for the solution to come out and compare it with my own. In the meantime, I want to get ready for the next challenge so I'm reading their previous blog posts and seeing how to solve their previous problems. There are a lot of new things I haven't heard about like (Cartesian trees, various sort algorithms, etc.) So, how does one prepare for such challenges (especially the O(x) time and space complexity). • How serious/common are wordpress updating issues

  I am currently deciding between a CMS (joomla OR wordpress )to dive deep into. I think I would go for wordpress, but the only thing thats holding me back are any potential issues with updating wordpress- that updating wordpress can break plugins, but is necessary because of security issues. How drastic are the changes in wordpress? say over a period of 2-3 years? from the perspective of someone intending to dive head first in its code. Should I fear regular updates breaking stuff ? • What resources about business should an internal IT department programmer be familiar with

I have to deal with business people all the time and many of the things I create can have profound impacts on the business. I am starting to regret not taking any business classes in college because I don't understand the first thing about running a business so I don't always understand what people are wanting, the best I can do is "think through it". • Copying VBoxAdditions to usr/share/virtualbox folder

  Since for some reason VBox does not find the Additions on the internet, I was trying to install them in the Ubuntu directory Vbox is looking for them - which is: usr/share/virtualbox but I am denied permission to do so. Any way around it? I am relatively new to ubuntu (know how to use the GUI, but still learning how to talk to the machine proper, so many things will be new to me; used to be power user/analyst for MS Windows, 98-Vista, so not a PC newbie, but still I'd say Linux newbie).   Hi how to redirect the user into mobile site when the user accessing from mobile. Say example i have site called www.mysite.com. Now, a person accessing a website from mobile it should redirect to www.mysite.com/mobile or www.m.mysite.com. I put some research in google that we can redirect using javascript to get the user agent(browser) if(mobile browser) { //redirect to www.mysite.com/mobile } else if(normal browser) { //redirect to www.mysite.com } or using screen resolution if(screen resolution < 800 ) { //redirect to www.mysite.com/mobile } else if(screen resolution > 800) { //redirect to www.mysite.com } I think It will not work If it is the case of javascript disable. Can we do this using .htaccess or php stuff? Is there any standard mechanism to do this?

• Can we grant sudo to an already opened application?

  So, can we grant sudo to an already opened application ? I wish to first open an application as normal user and incase if i need root permissions on it i wish to grant su without restarting the application.. I tried opening an application and then type "sudo appname" in terminal, but that opens a new app window retaining normal user permissions on old app window. Say, i want to check and edit /etc/apt/sources.list . I open a filemanager and go to the path and click on sources.list which opens a text editor with that file in view. If i feel i need to edit that, then i want to grant sudo to that instance of text editor rather than opening a new root text editor and browsing the entire path.

• Is it OK to push my code to GitHub while it is still in early development?

  I have some projects that are in a very early development state. They are nowhere nearing completion but I do host them (as public repos) on GitHub because: I have multiple computers and I want access to my code everywhere I want a backup for my code I want it to be easy if someone wants to collaborate in some way I use GitHub Issues as a poor man's project management software Is it OK to publish a project on GitHub even when it is very early in the development? I am a bit concerned about someone to come by and say OMG this is total BS, this code is so bad! while looking at unpolished/still in development/not tested code. What are your practices when you start new public projects? Do you wait until you have something substantial to show or you create a bare repo directly on GitHub and start from there? I used GitHub throughout this post but this applies to every code hosting service out there.
