Suppose I have two tables like the following: Area ---------------------------------- ID| Name | HierarchyLevel ---------------------------------- 1 | World | 1 2 | America| 2 3 | Europe | 2 4 | Africa | 2 5 | USA | 3 and AreaHierarchy ------------------------ ID | ParentID | ChildID ------------------------ 1 | 1 | 2 2 | 1 | 3 3 | 1 | 4 4 | 2 | 5 where AreaHierarchy.ParentID and AreaHierarchy.ChildID are FKs of Area.ID How can I find the nth parent of USA? Is it possible without looping? Probably not.

I'll need to rename a number of tables and fields, but need to do so in a way that doesn't break existing queries. (Fortunately, there are no macros, forms, or reports to worry about.) I've heard there are some commercial tools to make this job easier, but only found one (http://www.rickworld.com/products.html). Can anyone recommend this software, or any alternatives?

I'm looking for something which behaves similarly to mysqldump, taking a database name, and producing a single script which will recreate all the tables, stored procedures, reinsert all the data etc. I've seen http://vyaskn.tripod.com/code.htm#inserts, but I ideally want something to recreate everything (not just the data) which works in a single step to produce the final script.

  • HTML Encoding with ASP.NET

    I am currently html encoding all user entered text before inserting/updating a db table record. The problem is that on any subsequent updates, the previously encoded string is reencoded. This endless loop is starting to eat up alot of column space in my tables. I am using parameterized queries for all sql statements but am wondering would it be safe to just let the .NET Framework handle this part without the HTML Encoding?

    Hi, This question would be a bit childish, I have three tables, users, usergroups and contacts. In my system, the end user can create a contact and subsequently he\she may define the visibility of the contact by setting only for that user, or for a set of users or a set of usergroups. So I am wondering, how my database design would be, it should be many to many between users and contacts or many to many between usergroups and contacts.     When you look at your stream on the Facebook website, events such as "FriendX was tagged in an album", "FriendY is attending EventZ", and "FriendK and FriendL are now friends". I've tried various "vague" queries on the stream table, and so far I have been unable to get these types of events. Is this possible, or do I need to query the all of the other tables and write a ton of logic to try to figure out which new events to show and how to show them?

For example: Person: int id, String name Project: int id, String name ProjectPerson: Person.id, Project.id, String role Whenever I create the ProjectPerson association in the EF, I am unable to add the role attribute to the association. If I create the tables in my DB and then import it into the model, I lose the extra properties.
