• Adding Runtime Intelligence Application Analytics for a library and not an application

  I want to add usage statistics for a .NET 4.0 library I write on CodePlex. I try to follow the step described here but my problem lies with the fact that what I write is a library and not an application. One of the steps is put the Setup and Teardown attributes. I thought about adding the Setup attribute on a static constructor or a different place that will run once per usage of the library. My problem lies with the Teardown attribute that should be placed on code that ends the usage. I don't know where to put this attribute. Is it possible to get usage statistics on a library? Maybe I can register on an event that will fire when the application unloads the dll?

• Storing database settings outside app.config

  I've been writing a c# exe that will be running on a live web server, but I want to be able to test it on our staging server. Since the staging server has different database settings (in the app.config) from my localhost, is there any way I can store the connection string outside the app.config so that I can easily get to it? Also, is it possible to store the database connection string, then access it via the app.config? This might sound odd, but I'm using a dll from a CMS that uses the value in the .config file.

• How can I call python module inside versioned package folder?

  I need write python codes which run inside a host application. The python codes should be deployed under a specific folder of the host application. I must put my entry python module under the root of the specific folder. And I want put all my other python codes and c/c++ dll under a sub folder, I prefer to name the sub folder like XXX-1.0, the number is the version of my python codes. The entry python module is just simple call a python module under the sub-folder. By this way different version python codes can be deployed together without collision.   Having problems related to WPF WebBrowser not having a visual. Reason being, that it actually a wrapper around the winforms browser. Anyways, I searched the web for any solution to this problem, and got hold of the following suggestions: http://chriscavanagh.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/a-real-wpf-webbrowser/ http://rob.runtothehills.org/archives/60 The first one solves everything, but seems like an overkill. Plus, the dll's should be licensed for commercial use. The second one seems simple, but not able to figure out when to refresh the screen. Plus there's so much to do like sending mouse and keyboard messages to the webbrowser. P.S. The problem I'm trying to solve is to show the same webbrowser on different windows. They both must be interactive, and always in sync visually.

• What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

  I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens? What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server.

• How do I implement .net plugins without using AppDomains?

  Problem statement: Implement a plug-in system that allows the associated assemblies to be overwritten (avoid file locking). In .Net, specific assemblies may not be unloaded, only entire AppDomains may be unloaded. I'm posting this because when I was trying to solve the problem, every solution made reference to using multiple AppDomains. Multiple AppDomains are very hard to implement correctly, even when architected at the start of a project. Also, AppDomains didn't work for me because I needed to transfer Type across domains as a setting for Speech Server worfklow's InvokeWorkflow activity. Unfortunately, sending a type across domains causes the assembly to be injected into the local AppDomain. Also, this is relevant to IIS. IIS has a Shadow Copy setting that allows an executing assembly to be overwritten while its loaded into memory. The problem is that (at least under XP, didnt test on production 2003 servers) when you programmatically load an assembly, the shadow copy doesnt work (because you are loading the DLL, not IIS).

• IE downloads and installs CAB dialog popup upon every page refresh

  I have a signed cab on an aspx page. I am seeing the following inconsistent behavior. Any insights would be highly appreciated. On some machines, the cab is downloaded and installed on every page refresh. On few of those machines, the IE "install cab" dialog pops up on every page refresh, while on the others it pops up only once. Additional info: The CAB contains a .NET DLL The CAB is slightly large (around 30 MB), hence recurring download behavior is a pain Target browsers are IE6 and IE7, and the behavior is common to both!

• CUDA & VS2010 problem

  I have scoured the internets looking for an answer to this one, but couldn't find any. I've installed the CUDA 3.2 SDK (and, just now, CUDA 4.0 RC) and everything seems to work fine after long hours of fooling around with include directories, NSight, and all the rest. Well, except this one thing: it keeps highlighting the <<< >>> operator as a mistake. Only on VS2010--not on VS2008. On VS2010 I also get several warnings of the following sort: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\xdebug(109): warning C4251: 'std::_String_val<_Ty,_Alloc>::_Alval' : class 'std::_DebugHeapAllocator<_Ty>' needs to have dll-interface to be used by clients of class 'std::_String_val<_Ty,_Alloc>' Anyone know how this can be fixed?

• Migrating from CVS to Mercurial - how to handle cross-repo symbolic links?

  I have a project that is stored in CVS as numerous modules/repositories. In several of the modules the CVS tree has symbolic links to the files in another tree. For example, the internal support tools have links to binary files (DLL, EXE) that are created and stored in the C# module. In all cases, the files are modified only in in the module where the files exist and are treated as read-only in the tree where the symbolic link exists. More often than not, the files are pulled to machines running MSWindows so the use of symbolic links on the developer machine is not an option. My question is this: Is there a mechanism in Mercurial that can provide the same capabilities?

• Simple "Hello World!" console application crashes when run by windows TaskScheduler (1.0)

  I have a batch file which starts multiple instances of simple console application (Hello World!). I work on Windows server 2008 64-bit. I configure it to run in TaskScheduler, at startup, and whether user is logged-in or not. The later configuration means that the instances will run without GUI (i.e. - no window). When I run this task, some of the instances just fail, after consuming 100& CPU. Application event-log shows the following error: "Faulting module KERNEL32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e0421d, exception code 0xc0000142, fault offset 0x00000000000b8fb8, process id 0x29bc, application start time 0x01cae17d94a61895." Running the batch file directly works just fine. It seems to me that the OS has a problem loading too many instances of the application when no window is displayed. However - I can’t figure out why... Any idea??

• Integrating Hudson with MS Test?

  Is it possible to integrate Hudson with MS Test? I am setting up a smaller CI server on my development machine with Hudson right now, just so that I can have some statistics (ie. FxCop and compiler warnings). Of course, it would also be nice if it could just run my unit tests and present their output. Up to now, I have added the following batch task to Hudson, which makes it run the tests properly. "%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\MSTest.exe" /runconfig:LocalTestRun.testrunconfig /testcontainer:Tests\bin\Debug\Tests.dll However, as far as I know, Hudson does not support analysis of MS Test results, yet. Does anyone know whether the TRX files generated by MSTest.exe can be transformed to the JUnit or NUnit result format (because those are supported by Hudson), or whether there is any other way to integrate MS Test unit tests with Hudson?

  I'd like to use a PropertyGrid to manipulate the data on some objects, however these objects don't have properties, they have fields. Thus a property grid doesn't display them (high five MS!) Before anyone posts "just use properties": I can't at the moment.. these objects are DTOs and are used to send data to a VB6 Interop dll, thus all the parameters for the method calls are "ref" parameters (high five MS!), and C# won't compile if you use a property instead of a field or variable (high five MS!). No, I am not going to create local variables for every property on any given object. There many, many fields, and many, many test cases that would need updating, as well as the production code it self, and this post/question may be the path of least resistance. :)

  Hello: Without using p/invoke, from a C++/CLI I have succeeded in integrating various methods of a DLL library from a third party built in C. One of these methods retrieves information from a database and stores it in different structures. The C++/CLI program I wrote reads those structures and stores them in a List<, which is then returned to the corresponding reading and use of an application programmed completely in C#. I understand that the double handling of data (first, filling in several structures and then, filling all of these structures into a list<) may generate an unnecessary overload, at which point I wish C++/CLI had the keyword "yield". Depending on the above scenario, do you have recommendations to avoid or reduce this overload? Thanks.

Parameter ds is of type OtherDLL.BaseObj which is defined in a referenced ActiveX DLL. ds.Data is a variant 2-dimensional array (one dimension carries the data, the other one carries the column index. ds.Columns is a Collection of columns in 'ds.Data`. Assuming there are at least 400 rows of data and 25 columns, this code takes about 15 seconds to run on my machine. Kind of unbelievable. However if I copy the variant array to a local variable, so: function Foo(ds as OtherDLL.BaseObj) dim lngRowIndex as long dim lngColIndex as long dim v as variant v = ds.Data for lngRowIndex = 1 to ubound(v, 2) for lngColIndex = 1 to ds.Columns.Count Debug.Print v(lngRowIndex, lngColIndex) next next end function the entire thing processes in barely any noticeable time (basically close to 0).   I disassembled the .NET 'System' DLL and looked at the source code for the variable classes (string, int, byte, etc.) to see if I could figure out how to make a class that could take on a value. I noticed that the "Int32" class inherits the following: IComparable, IFormattable, IConvertible, IComparable, IEquatable. The String and Int32 classes are not inheritable, and I can't figure out what in these inherited interfaces allows the classes to hold a value. What I would want is something like this: public class MyVariable : //inherits here { //Code in here that allows it to get/set the value } public static class Main(string[] args) { MyVariable a = "This is my own custom variable!"; MyVariable b = 2976; if(a == "Hello") { } if(b = 10) { } Console.WriteLine(a.ToString()); Console.WriteLine(a.ToString()); }

• How to perform "shell" icon embedding in Visual Studio 2010?

  As far as I can tell, there have been (at least?) three types of icon embedding. There's the original style used by shell32.dll and friends, .Net's embedding, and the new type that WPF uses. I'm looking for how to perform the first one, as I want to have a few other icons available as resources for a jumplist, which can only accept that style. However, I can't figure out how to embed in this style, only the other two. How do I do this? All the results I find on google, etc are for adding icons to ResX files or similar. I am using C#, if it matters.
