• Python: Why is IDLE so slow?

  Hi, IDLE is my favorite Python editor. It offers very nice and intuitive Python shell which is extremely useful for unit-testing and debugging, and a neat debugger. However, code executed under IDLE is insanely slow. By insanely I mean 3 orders of magnitude slow: bash time echo "for i in range(10000): print 'x'," | python Takes 0.052s, IDLE import datetime start=datetime.datetime.now() for i in range(10000): print 'x', end=datetime.datetime.now() print end-start Takes: >>> 0:01:44.853951 Which is roughly 2,000 times slower. Any thoughts, or ideas how to improve this? I guess it has something to do with the debugger in the background, but I'm not really sure. Adam

• zsh: command not found: ls

  I'm having a rather strange problem with zsh. When I start up my shell, everything - functions, environment vars, aliases, etc. - all work fine. I've created the following function and sourced it in zsh: clean() { for i in /tmp/* do echo $i done } Running clean in the terminal works as expected, in that it prints out all the files in /tmp/. Afterward, however, trying any command - for example, ls - produces this: zsh: command not found: ls I have several other functions that work just fine, which leads me to believe that somehow, that loop is causing the problem. At any rate, this is very frustrating and I would sincerely appreciate the community's eyes. Thanks!

• Matplotlib and WSGI/mod_python not working on Apache.

  Everything works as supposed to on the Django development server. In Apache, the django app also works except when matplotlib is used. Here's the error I get: No module named multiarray. Exception Type: ImportError Exception Value: No module named multiarray Exception Location: /usr/share/pyshared/numpy/core/numerictypes.py in <module>, line 81 Python Executable: /usr/bin/python Python Version: 2.6.4 From the python shell, both statements work: import numpy.core.multiarray and import multiarray. Any ideas? Thanks As I'm looking over the numpy files, I found the multiarray module, which has an extension of 'so'. My guess, is that mod_python is not reading these files.

• Visual Studio add-in to quickly test a code snippet

  One thing I really love about languages such as Python is that if you have a piece of code you'd like to try out, you can just open the interactive shell and do it in seconds. Is there a Visual Studio add-in that does the same for C#? Basically what I'm looking for is something that opens up a window or tab with a text editor (preferably with code completion, because VS does it so nicely) and a button that runs the code and displays the output. Extra points for convenience features such as displaying complex output in a user-friendly way (think Firebug's console.log), automatically referencing all the assemblies the current project references, etc. I tried googling for a while, but either I fail at coming up with good keywords, or no-one has made an add-in like this. If there really is none, I'm considering making one myself.

  I have the following alias in my .aliases: alias gi grep -i and I want to look for foo case-insensitively in all the files that have the string bar in their name: find -name \*bar\* | xargs gi foo This is what I get: xargs: gi: No such file or directory Is there any way to use aliases in xargs, or do I have to use the full version: find -name \*bar\* | xargs grep -i foo Note: This is a simple example. Besides gi I have some pretty complicated aliases that I can't expand manually so easily. Edit: I used tcsh, so please specify if an answer is shell-specific.

  I must be overlooking something terribly obvious. I need to execute a C program, display its output in real time and finally parse its last line, which should be straightforward as the last line printed is always the same. process = subprocess.Popen(args, shell = True, stdout = subprocess.PIPE, stderr = subprocess.PIPE) # None indicates that the process hasn't terminated yet. while process.poll() is None: # Always save the last non-emtpy line that was output by the child # process, as it will write an empty line when closing its stdout. out = process.stdout.readline() if out: last_non_empty_line = out if verbose: sys.stdout.write(out) sys.stdout.flush() # Parse 'out' here... Once in a while, however, the last line is not printed. The default value for Popens's bufsize is 0, so it is supposed to be unbuffered. I have also tried, to no avail, adding fflush(stdout) to the C code just before exiting, but it seems that there is absolutely no need to flush a stream before exiting a program. Ideas anyone?

This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner Checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

This details cannot be stored on server in any form due to security related policies. i got 2 approaches to handle this situation, 1. create hidden parameter file with login details and limit the access to owner. again the implication is i cannot store login data in any format on server 2. Create the user as OS authenticated and straight away login into sql without any userid/password I am not able to figure out risks involved in 2nd approach which u experienced folks could have come across. let me know if there is any other approach to handle password leakage issue

• Invoking MSYS bash from Windows cmd

  I'm using GCC on Windows7 (using the TDM's build). I installed MSYS to be able to execute make and compile using makefiles. However, it is tedious to every time start up the MSYS bash shell, navigate to the directory of the project and run make. What I want is to automate this process. I prefer to have a batch file in Windows, or something similar, from which I then invoke the MSYS bash. It should navigate to the directory the batch file resides in and call "make". Is this possible? Can I send commands to MSYS bash from cmd (like navigation / invoking make)? Or can I let the MSYS bash run a "bash script", which sets the commands to be executed much like batch scripts? Thank you.   So anyway. i fastbooted and superrooted, and all's fine in the merry old land of Oz. So yeah, now I can see /data/data.. in DDMS, both the plugin and the tool, which is great. but when I attach my phone, I still can't see the main drive. All I can see is the SD card. Using OSX, so when I use Disk Utility, I can see the machine then see the SD Card. is the problem that none of the tools I am using, except DDMS and ADB shell, know how to read that main Android drive? It's the same format as the qemu img, right? Someone HAS to come up with a tool that can do this, let me hack my phone and access the main drive via my USB connector, and mount that drive on my native file system. It just can NOT be that hard. Err, can it? All smiles! Michael

  I have software that can launch and control multiple firefox browsers on Ubuntu EC2 images. I need to run a small load test against a QuickTime Streaming server. The stream starts automatically when loaded in a browser that has the QuickTime plugin, so I don't need to automate the stream once it starts. Alternately, I can also make these machines run arbitrary ruby code or executables. How can I get these ubuntu machines to pull in the stream? Also, how can I capture bandwidth usage (maybe a shell script?) on the worker machines?

It's a fairly easy programming language considering that I learned Java in university, that I know php pretty well and that I already played around with python and ruby. I would like to be able to write commands in a shell script that can do the following: How can I tell if my current branch can be fast-forwarded from the remote branch it is tracking? How can I tell how many commits "behind" my branch is? How can I fast-forward by just one commit, so that for example, my local branch would go from "behind by 3 commits" to "behind by 2 commits"? (For those who are interested, I am trying to put together a quality git/darcs mirror.)

• git- how to troubleshoot "cannot find command"

  I need help getting git extensions to run with msysgit. I have had bad luck with extensions git-tfs and git-fetchall, in both cases it is the same problem. The addon will require a file to be placed where git can find it (git-tfs.exe and git-fetchall.sh). I understand this to mean the files need to be in a directory that is in the 'PATH' environment variable. In both cases I get stuck at this point: $ git-diffall bash: git-diffall: command not found When I run echo %PATH% from a regular command shell, it shows my path variable includes the directories where git-diffall and git-tfs are. How can I debug this, or am I missing something? Is there a way within msysgit to verify the command search path is what I expect?
