  • 2011 i7 Macbook Pro unable to boot from any Windows CD?

    I'm encountering issues installing Windows alongside my Lion install. I'm attempting to install from the internal SuperDrive, after using Boot Camp to partition what was a single, HFS+ volume. When holding down Option at boot, the CD appears in the startup list, but upon selecting it, I get a gray screen for 5 minutes, then a flashing white folder. I tried installing rEFIt and using this to boot the CD, but I receive an error about "Not Found" being returned from the "LocateDevicePath", and a mention of the firmware not supporting booting using legacy methods. I've done my research, but it sounds like most of the rEFIt errors of this nature are caused by installing from a thumbdrive, or an external drive. I'm using the internal SuperDrive. Also, I've tried this with two different disks: A Windows XP SP2 CD A Windows 7 x86 DVD Both are disks I've had around for years, and I've used them reliably in the past. The system is an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, all firmware updates installed.

  • Making "default saved" work with GRUB2...?

    I just installed Moblin Operating System. It's using GRUB2. On my Ubuntu 8.04 GRUB 0.97 was being used in which i was using the default saved option comfortably. I found that with GRUB2 i should not edit /boot/grub/menu.lst directly but I did :) because my Moblin does not contain any /etc/default/grub where they say I should do the modification I want. So what I did is as following which did not work: default=saved timeout=1 #splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz #hiddenmenu #silent title Moblin (2.6.31.5-10.1.moblin2-netbook) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-10.1.moblin2-netbook ro root=/dev/sda1 vga=current savedefault=1 title Pathetic Windows rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 savedefault=0 By doing so I should have automatically switch between Moblin and Window at each boot but it's not working. Almost all the troubleshooters on internet are saying that I should enable the DEFAULT=save option in /etc/default/grub but I am unable to find this file. Any idea what else should I do? Thanks a lot Update: I used the equal to sign because by default my menu.lst had an entry as default=0. However, default 0, is also working fine. Moreover the menu.lst, i have is actually a symbolic link to ./grub.conf. I have also noticed that grub-intall and grub-set-default commands are not working.

  • repeated entries in website log file

    I am writing an ad hoc log analyser for my website log file. The following is part of the log file in which it shows file1.pdf has been downloaded twice. Looking carefully, the time stamp and IP address are exactly the same in both entries. How can it be possible to have 2 downloads at the same time by the same person. Should I count it as 2 in my programme or as 1?   • logrotate: neither rotate nor compress empty files

    i have just set up an (r)syslog server to receive the logs of various clients, which works fine. only logrotate is still not behaving as intending. i want logrotate to create a new logfile for each day, but only to keep and store i.e. compress non-empty files. my logrotate config looks currently like this # sample configuration for logrotate being a remote server for multiple clients /var/log/syslog { rotate 3 daily missingok notifempty delaycompress compress dateext nomail postrotate reload rsyslog >/dev/null 2>&1 || true endscript } # local i.e. the system's very own logs: keep logs for a whole month /var/log/kern.log /var/log/kernel-info /var/log/auth.log /var/log/auth-info /var/log/cron.log /var/log/cron-info /var/log/daemon.log /var/log/daemon-info /var/log/mail.log /var/log/rsyslog /var/log/rsyslog-info { rotate 31 daily missingok notifempty delaycompress compress dateext nomail sharedscripts postrotate reload rsyslog >/dev/null 2>&1 || true endscript } # received i.e. logs from the clients /var/log/path-to-logs/*/* { rotate 31 daily missingok notifempty delaycompress compress dateext nomail } what i end up with is having is some sort of "summarized" files such as filename-datestampDay-Day and corresponding .gz files. What I do have are empty files, which are eventually zipped. so does the notifempty directive is in fact responsible for these DayX-DayY files, days on which really nothing happened? what would be an efficient way to drop both, empty log files and their .gz files, so that I eventually only keep logs/compressed files that truly contain data?

    I've set up subversion and apache on my server. If I browse to it through my webbrowser it works fine (http://svn.host.com/reposname). However, if I do a checkout on my machine I get the following error: Command: Checkout from http://svn.host.com/reposname, revision HEAD, Fully recursive, Externals included Error: Repository moved permanently to 'http://svn.host.com/reposname/'; please relocate I checked apache's error log, but it doesn't say anything. (it does now - see edit) My repositories are stored under: /var/www/svn/repos/ My website is stored under: /var/www/vhosts/x/... Here's the conf file for the subdomain: <Location /> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/www/svn/repos/ AuthType Basic AuthName "Authorization Realm" AuthUserFile /var/www/svn/auth/svn.htpasswd Require valid-user </Location> Authentication works fine. Does anyone know what might be causing this? -- Edit So I restarted apache (again) and tried it again and now it give me an error message, but it doesn't really help. I went through that thread trying to find a solution, I changed my resolv.conf: before: domain [my work domain] search [my work domain] nameserver [my gateway] nameserver [my gateway2] I changed it to: after: domain [my work domain] search [my work domain] nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4 However, any time I reboot the computer the resolv.conf gets overwritten to the previous version (the 'before' above).   • How can I make AdobePS recognize my printer in Win98se?

    I am trying to use the adobe product: "PostScript Printer Driver AdobePS 4.2.6 for Windows 95 and Windows 98" to connect a new HP laser printer (CP1025nw) via USB to a machine running win98SE. I am using the PPD file for "HP color LaserJet PS". The Adobe utility installs the printer, and it shows up on the printer list ... but it doesn't print. I get an error message (sometimes) that an error occurred writing to USB001.. Evidently, AdobePS cannot "See" the printer. I suspect there is a problem wrt the printer port. Nothing I pick works. I have two virtual printer ports, USB001 and USB002 which were created during the installation of an HP inkjet printer. The inkjet will work on either of these, but the laser printer works on neither. When I connect the laserjet printer, the windows New Hardware Wizard activates, but I don't see how to point it at the AdobePS Postscript driver. HP has no support whatsoever for win98, so there's no hope of getting help from them. The printer works great with the several winXP computers connected through either the network connection or the USB. So, how do I convince Win98se to use the adobe postscript printer driver? Is this printer even a postscript printer? Is there a better way to get win98se to talk to this printer? Any suggestions?

  • Subsequent runs of rsync locally don't reduce data transferred

    I have an EC2 instance with data I want to sync to a mounted, but remote, volume, as a backup. rsync seems like the way to go with this, so as a test I took my test file (a Postgres pg_dump file) and used rsync -v to copy it to the mounted volume: [ec2-user work]$ rsync -v dump.sql.1 ../backup/dump.sql dump.sql.1 sent 821704315 bytes received 31 bytes 3416650.09 bytes/sec total size is 821603948 speedup is 1.00 Then, I ran it again, expecting to see minimal sent/received numbers because it would just be checksums. Instead... [ec2-user work]$ rsync -v dump.sql.1 ../backup/dump.sql dump.sql.1 sent 821704315 bytes received 31 bytes 3402502.47 bytes/sec total size is 821603948 speedup is 1.00 I'm new to rsync so perhaps I'm missing something, but isn't the idea that the source and destination files are checked for differences, and then a patch is generated and applied to the destination? Why is this not reducing the amount of data 'sent' to just the size of the checksums? Some background if it's relevant: the mounted volume is using s3fs, mounted with s3fs <bucketname> backup.

  • Windows 7: Dual Monitor Issue

    I have a Dell laptop with a docking station and two external monitors hooked up. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Originally, the two monitors were the same - Dell 1908FP. I have replaced one of them with an HP LA2405. I have set the HP 24" (1920 x 1200 connected via DVI port) as montior 1 and extended to use the Dell 19" (12080 x 1024 connected via VGA port) as monitor 2. I have set my power plan so that when the laptop is plugged in, it will turn the monitors off after 10 minutes, but it will not put my laptop to sleep. However, now that I have the HP monitor, when I unlock my laptop and the monitors come back on, all my windows are resized and shifted to the top left corner of the HP monitor as if they had been resized for display on the smaller Dell monitor. A co-worker has the exact same laptop and monitor configuration but doesn't experience this issue, so I figure there's some configuration that's different but we can't find it. I haven't been able to find any mention of a similar problem doing an internet search, but I'm not really sure what terms to use in my search. Anybody have any suggestions as to what may be causing the issue? OS setting? Monitor setting? EDIT: My laptop is using the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel/drivers.

    I'm struggling with something in FFMpeg at the moment... I'm trying to make DNxHD 1080p/24, 36Mb/s MXF files from a sequence of PNG files. My current command-line is: ffmpeg -y -f image2 -i /tmp/temp.%04d.png -s 1920x1080 -r 24 -vcodec dnxhd -f mxf -pix_fmt rgb32 -b 36Mb /tmp/temp.mxf To which ffmpeg gives me the output: Input #0, image2, from '/tmp/temp.%04d.png': Duration: 00:00:01.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: png, rgb32, 1920x1080, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc Output #0, mxf, to '/tmp/temp.mxf': Stream #0.0: Video: dnxhd, yuv422p, 1920x1080, q=2-31, 36000 kb/s, 90k tbn, 24 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 [mxf @ 0x1005800]unsupported video frame rate Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?) There are a few things in here that concern me: The output stream is insisting on being yuv422p, which doesn't support alpha. 24fps is an unsupported video frame rate? I've tried 23.976 too, and get the same thing. I then tried the same thing, but writing to a quicktime (still DNxHD, though) with: ffmpeg -y -f image2 -i /tmp/temp.%04d.png -s 1920x1080 -r 24 -vcodec dnxhd -f mov -pix_fmt rgb32 -b 36Mb /tmp/temp.mov This gives me the output: Input #0, image2, from '/tmp/1274263259.28098.%04d.png': Duration: 00:00:01.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: png, rgb32, 1920x1080, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc Output #0, mov, to '/tmp/1274263259.28098.mov': Stream #0.0: Video: dnxhd, yuv422p, 1920x1080, q=2-31, 36000 kb/s, 90k tbn, 24 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Press [q] to stop encoding frame= 39 fps= 9 q=1.0 Lsize= 7177kB time=1.62 bitrate=36180.8kbits/s video:7176kB audio:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.013636% Which obviously works, to a certain extent, but still has the issue of being yuv422p, and therefore losing the alpha.   • Change NSTimer interval for repeating timer.

    Hi, I am running a mainLoop in Cocoa using an NSTimer set up like this: mainLoopTimer = [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1.0/fps target:self selector:@selector(mainloop) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] addTimer:mainLoopTimer forMode:NSEventTrackingRunLoopMode]; At Program startup I set the timeInterval to 0.0 so that the mainloop runs as fast as possible. Anyways, I would like to provide a function to set the framerate(and thus the time interval of the timer) to a specific value at runtime.     Hello, I need to load Dimensions from EDW Tables (which does maintain historical records) and is of type Key-Value-Parameter. My scenario is ok if got a record in EDW as below Key1 Key2 Code Value EffectiveDate EndDate CurrentFlag 100 555 01 AAA 2010-01-01 11.00.00 9999-12-31 Y 100 555 02 BBB 2010-01-01 11.00.00 9999-12-31 Y This need to be loaded into DM by pivoting it as key1 and key2 combinations makes Natural key for DM SK NK 01 02 EffectiveDate EndDate CurrentFlag 1 100-555 AAA BBB 2010-01-01 11.00.00 9999-12-31 Y My ssis package does this all good pivoting... looking up the incoming NK in DIM.. if new will insert .. else with further lookup with effective date and determine if the incoming for same natural key got any new (change) in attribute.. if so updates the current record byy setting its end date and insert the new one with new attribute value and pulling the recent records values for other attributes. My problem is if the same natural key comes twice with same attribute in single extract my first lookup which on natural key .. will let both records pass and try to insert.. where its fails. If i get distinct records on NK the second is not picked and need to run package again. So my question how can i configure lookup or alernative way to handle this scenario when same NK comes twice in single extract, would be able to insert first record if not exists in Dim table and for second one should be able to updated with the changes with reference to one inserted above. Not sure this makes sense what am trying to explain. Will attached the screenshot once back to work desk (on monday). Thanks

How i resolve the problem of type casting for printing the objects of NSSArray in CGContextShowTextAtpoint() method??????????????
