Mocking ISession.Query<T>() for testing consumer

I'm trying to avoid using an in memory database for testing (though I might have to do this if the following is impossible). I'm using NHibernate 3.0 with LINQ. I'd like to be able to mock session.Query<T>() to return some dummy values but I can't since it's an extension method and these are pretty much impossible to test. Does anyone have any suggestions (other than using an in memory database) for testing session queries with LINQ?

Capistrano + Nginx + Passenger = 403

I asked this over at stackoverflow as well, but still haven't received any answers that have helped me to solve this problem. I have spent almost a week at this point trying to solve the issue, and I'm just not making any headway. It seems that this issue is pretty common, but none of the solutions I found online work for me. A buddy of mine is actually creating the same setup, and he is having the same issue. After a few days stuck with the 403 error I started over using this tutorial: http://blog.ninjahideout.com/posts/a-guide-to-a-nginx-passenger-and-rvm-server I had hoped starting from scratch using this tutorial would work, but no dice. Either way, if you view the tutorial you can see what steps I have taken. Here is essentially what I have going on. I have a VPS account on linode.com Server OS is Ubuntu 10.04 Local OS (shouldn't matter, but just so you know) used to deploy with Capistrano is Snow Leopard 10.6.6 I use RVM on the server. Version is 1.2.2 I was previously on ruby-1.9.2-p0 [ i386 ], but per the tutorial listed above I switched to ree-1.8.7-2010.02 [ i386 ]. Running 'which ruby' from the command line verifies that I am using 1.8.7 with the following output: /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.02/bin/ruby passenger -v prints the following: Phusion Passenger version 3.0.2 Running 'nginx -v' gives me a message that the command nginx could not be found. The server is definitely there and running as I can use nginx to serve static files, but this could have something to do with my problem. But rails no worky. That's basically it. At this point I have just about completely exhausted every possible solution attempt I can think of. I am a programmer and definitely not a sysadmin, so I am 99% sure this has something to do with permissions that I have hosed, but for the life of me I just can't figure out where. If anyone can help I would really really appreciate it. If there's any specific permission things you want me to check (ie groups/permissions), can you please include the commands to do so as well. Hopefully this will help others in the future who read this post. Let me know if there is any other information I can provide, and thanks in advance!!!

Include weather information in ASP.Net site from weather.com services

In this article, I am going to demonstrate how you can use the XMLOAP services (referred as XOAP from here onwards) provided by weather.com to display the weather information in your website. The XOAP services are available to be used for free of charge, provided you are comply with requirements from weather.com. I am writing this article from a technical point of view. If you are planning to use weather.com XOAP services in your application, please refer to the terms and conditions from weather.com website. In order to start using the XOAP services, you need to sign up the XOAP datafeed. The signing process is simple, you simply browse the url http://www.weather.com/services/xmloap.html. The URL looks similar to the following. Click on the sign up button, you will reach the registration page. Here you need to specify the site name you need to use this feed for. The form looks similar to the following. Once you fill all the mandatory information, click on save and continue button. That’s it. The registration is over. You will receive an email that contains your partner id, license key and SDK. The SDK available in a zipped format, contains the terms of use and documentation about the services available. Other than this the SDK includes the logos and icons required to display the weather information. As per the SDK, currently there are 2 types of information available through XOAP. These services are Current Conditions for over 30,000 U.S. and over 7,900 international Location IDs Updated at least Hourly Five-Day Forecast (today + 4 additional forecast days in consecutive order beginning with tomorrow) for over 30,000 U.S. and over 7,900 international Location IDs Updated at least Three Times Daily The SDK provides detailed information about the fields included in response of each service. Additionally there is a refresh rate that you need to comply with. As per the SDK, the refresh rate means the following “Refresh Rate” shall mean the maximum frequency with which you may call the XML Feed for a given LocID requesting a data set for that LocID. During the time period in between refresh periods the data must be cached by you either in the memory on your servers or in Your Desktop Application. About the Services Weather.com will provide you with access to the XML Feed over the Internet through the hostname xoap.weather.com. The weather data from the XML feed must be requested for a specific location. So you need a location ID (LOC ID). The XML feed work with 2 types of location IDs. First one is with City Identifiers and second one is using 5 Digit US postal codes. If you do not know your location ID, don’t worry, there is a location id search service available for you to retrieve the location id from city name. Since I am a resident in the Kingdom of Bahrain, I am going to retrieve the weather information for Manama(the capital of Bahrain) . In order to get the location ID for Manama, type the following URL in your address bar. http://xoap.weather.com/search/search?where=manama I got the following XML output. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!-- This document is intended only for use by authorized licensees of The –> <!-- Weather Channel. Unauthorized use is prohibited. Copyright 1995-2011, –> <!-- The Weather Channel Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved. –> <search ver="3.0"> <loc id="BAXX0001" type="1">Al Manama, Bahrain</loc> </search> You can try this with any city name, if the city is available, it will return the location id, and otherwise, it will return nothing. In order to get the weather information, from XOAP, you need to pass certain parameters to the XOAP service. A brief about the parameters are as follows. Please refer SDK for more details. Parameter name Possible Value cc Optional, if you include this, the current condition will be returned. Value can be anything, as it will be ignored e.g. cc=* dayf If you want the forecast for 5 days, specify dayf=5 This is optional iink Value should be XOAP par Your partner id. You can find this in your registration email from weather.com prod Value should be XOAP key The license key assigned to you. This will be available in the registration email unit s or m (standard or matric or you can think of Celsius/Fahrenheit) this is optional field, if not specified the unit will be standard(s) The URL host for the XOAP service is http://xoap.weather.com. So for my purpose, I need the following request to be made to access the XOAP services. http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/BAXX0001?cc=*&link=xoap&prod=xoap&par=*********&key=************** (The ***** to be replaced with the corresponding alternatives) The response XML have a root element “weather”. Under the root element, it has the following sections <head> - the meta data information about the weather results returned. <loc> - the location data block that provides, the information about the location for which the wheather data is retrieved. <lnks> - the 4 promotional links you need to place along with the weather display. Additional to these 4 links, there should be another link with weather channel logo to the home page of weather.com. <cc> - the current condition data. This element will be there only if you specify the cc element in the request. <dayf> - the forcast data as you specified. This element will be there only if you specify the dayf in the request. In this walkthrough, I am going to capture the weather information for Manama (Location ID: BAXX0001). You need 2 applications to display weather information in your website. A Console application that retrieves data from the XMLOAP and store in the SQL Server database (or any data store as you prefer).This application will be scheduled to execute in every 25 minutes using windows task scheduler, so that we can comply with the refresh rate. A web application that display data from the SQL Server database Retrieve the Weather from XOAP I have created a console application named, Weather Service. I created a SQL server database, with the following columns. I named the table as tblweather. You are free to choose any name. Column name Description lastUpdated Datetime, this is the last time when the weather data is updated. This is the time of the service running TemparatureDateTime The date and time returned by XML feed Temparature The temperature returned by the XML feed. TemparatureUnit The unit of the temperature returned by the XML feed iconId The id of the icon to be used. Currently 48 icons from 0 to 47 are available. WeatherDescription The Weather Description Phrase returned by the feed. Link1url The url to the first promo link Link1Text The text for the first promo link Link2url The url to the second promo link Link2Text The text for the second promo link Link3url The url to the third promo link Link3Text The text for the third promo link Link4url The url to the fourth promo link Link4Text The text for the fourth promo link Every time when the service runs, the application will update the database columns from the XOAP data feed. When the application starts, It is going to get the data as XML from the url. This demonstration uses LINQ to extract the necessary data from the fetched XML. I got the following output Check your database and make sure, the data is updated with the latest information from the service. (Make sure you inserted one row in the database by entering some values before executing the service. Otherwise you need to modify your application code to count the rows and conditionally perform insert/update query) Display the Weather information in ASP.Net page Now you got all the data in the database. You just need to create a web application and display the data from the database. I created a new ASP.Net web application with a default.aspx page. In order to comply with the terms of weather.com, You need to use Weather.com logo along with the weather display. You can find the necessary logos to use under the folder “logos” in the SDK. Additionally copy any of the icon set from the folder “icons” to your web application. I used the 93x93 icon set. You are free to use any other sizes available. The design view of the page in VS2010 looks similar to the following. The page contains a heading, an image control (for displaying the weather icon), 2 label controls (for displaying temperature and weather description), 4 hyperlinks (for displaying the 4 promo links returned by the XOAP service) and weather.com logo with hyperlink to the weather.com home page. I am going to write code that will update the values of these controls from the values stored in the database by the service application as mentioned in the previous step. Get XML from Server for Use on Windows Phone

When working with mobile devices you always need to take into account bandwidth usage and power consumption. If you are constantly connecting to a server to retrieve data for an input screen, then you might think about moving some of that data down to the phone and cache the data on the phone. An example would be a static list of US State Codes that you are asking the user to select from. Since this is data that does not change very often, this is one set of data that would be great to cache on the phone. Since the Windows Phone does not have an embedded database, you can just use an XML string stored in Isolated Storage. Of course, then you need to figure out how to get data down to the phone. You can either ship it with the application, or connect and retrieve the data from your server one time and thereafter cache it and retrieve it from the cache. In this blog post you will see how to create a WCF service to retrieve data from a Product table in a database and send that data as XML to the phone and store it in Isolated Storage. You will then read that data from Isolated Storage using LINQ to XML and display it in a ListBox. Step 1: Create a Windows Phone Application The first step is to create a Windows Phone application called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet (or whatever you want to call it). On the MainPage.xaml add the following XAML within the “ContentPanel” grid: <StackPanel> <Button Name="btnGetXml" Content="Get XML" Click="btnGetXml_Click" /> <Button Name="btnRead" Content="Read XML" IsEnabled="False" Click="btnRead_Click" /> <ListBox Name="lstData" Height="430" ItemsSource="{Binding}" DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" /></StackPanel> Now it is time to create the WCF Service Application that you will call to get the XML from a table in a SQL Server database. Step 2: Create a WCF Service Application Add a new project to your solution called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet.Services. Delete the IService1.* and Service1.* files and the App_Data folder, as you don’t generally need these items. Add a new WCF Service class called ProductService. In the IProductService class modify the void DoWork() method with the following code: [OperationContract]string GetProductXml(); Open the code behind in the ProductService.svc and create the GetProductXml() method. This method (shown below) will connect up to a database and retrieve data from a Product table. public string GetProductXml(){ string ret = string.Empty; string sql = string.Empty; SqlDataAdapter da; DataSet ds = new DataSet(); sql = "SELECT ProductId, ProductName,"; sql += " IntroductionDate, Price"; sql += " FROM Product"; da = new SqlDataAdapter(sql, ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Sandbox"].ConnectionString); da.Fill(ds); // Create Attribute based XML foreach (DataColumn col in ds.Tables[0].Columns) { col.ColumnMapping = MappingType.Attribute; } ds.DataSetName = "Products"; ds.Tables[0].TableName = "Product"; ret = ds.GetXml(); return ret;} After retrieving the data from the Product table using a DataSet, you will want to set each column’s ColumnMapping property to Attribute. Using attribute based XML will make the data transferred across the wire a little smaller. You then set the DataSetName property to the top-level element name you want to assign to the XML. You then set the TableName property on the DataTable to the name you want each element to be in your XML. The last thing you need to do is to call the GetXml() method on the DataSet object which will return an XML string of the data in your DataSet object. This is the value that you will return from the service call. The XML that is returned from the above call looks like the following: <Products> <Product ProductId="1" ProductName="PDSA .NET Productivity Framework" IntroductionDate="9/3/2010" Price="5000" /> <Product ProductId="3" ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET" IntroductionDate="7/1/2010" Price="599.00" /> ... ... ... </Products> The GetProductXml() method uses a connection string from the Web.Config file, so add a <connectionStrings> element to the Web.Config file in your WCF Service application. Modify the settings shown below as needed for your server and database name. <connectionStrings> <add name="Sandbox" connectionString="Server=Localhost;Database=Sandbox; Integrated Security=Yes"/></connectionStrings> The Product Table You will need a Product table that you can read data from. I used the following structure for my product table. Add any data you want to this table after you create it in your database. CREATE TABLE Product( ProductId int PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, ProductName varchar(50) NOT NULL, IntroductionDate datetime NULL, Price money NULL) Step 3: Connect to WCF Service from Windows Phone Application Back in your Windows Phone application you will now need to add a Service Reference to the WCF Service application you just created. Right-mouse click on the Windows Phone Project and choose Add Service Reference… from the context menu. Click on the Discover button. In the Namespace text box enter “ProductServiceRefrence”, then click the OK button. If you entered everything correctly, Visual Studio will generate some code that allows you to connect to your Product service. On the MainPage.xaml designer window double click on the Get XML button to generate the Click event procedure for this button. In the Click event procedure make a call to a GetXmlFromServer() method. This method will also need a “Completed” event procedure to be written since all communication with a WCF Service from Windows Phone must be asynchronous. Write these two methods as follows: private const string KEY_NAME = "ProductData"; private void GetXmlFromServer(){ ProductServiceClient client = new ProductServiceClient(); client.GetProductXmlCompleted += new EventHandler<GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs> (client_GetProductXmlCompleted); client.GetProductXmlAsync(); client.CloseAsync();} void client_GetProductXmlCompleted(object sender, GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs e){ // Store XML data in Isolated Storage IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME] = e.Result; btnRead.IsEnabled = true;} As you can see, this is a fairly standard call to a WCF Service. In the Completed event you get the Result from the event argument, which is the XML, and store it into Isolated Storage using the IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings class. Notice the constant that I added to specify the name of the key. You will use this constant later to read the data from Isolated Storage. Step 4: Create a Product Class Even though you stored XML data into Isolated Storage when you read that data out you will want to convert each element in the XML file into an actual Product object. This means that you need to create a Product class in your Windows Phone application. Add a Product class to your project that looks like the code below: public class Product{ public string ProductName{ get; set; } public int ProductId{ get; set; } public DateTime IntroductionDate{ get; set; } public decimal Price{ get; set; }} Step 5: Read Settings from Isolated Storage Now that you have the XML data stored in Isolated Storage, it is time to use it. Go back to the MainPage.xaml design view and double click on the Read XML button to generate the Click event procedure. From the Click event procedure call a method named ReadProductXml().Create this method as shown below: private void ReadProductXml(){ XElement xElem = null; if (IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Contains(KEY_NAME)) { xElem = XElement.Parse( IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME].ToString()); // Create a list of Product objects var products = from prod in xElem.Descendants("Product") orderby prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value select new Product { ProductId = Convert.ToInt32(prod.Attribute("ProductId").Value), ProductName = prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value, IntroductionDate = Convert.ToDateTime(prod.Attribute("IntroductionDate").Value), Price = Convert.ToDecimal(prod.Attribute("Price").Value) }; lstData.DataContext = products; }} The ReadProductXml() method checks to make sure that the key name that you saved your XML as exists in Isolated Storage prior to trying to open it. If the key name exists, then you retrieve the value as a string. Use the XElement’s Parse method to convert the XML string to a XElement object. LINQ to XML is used to iterate over each element in the XElement object and create a new Product object from each attribute in your XML file. The LINQ to XML code also orders the XML data by the ProductName. After the LINQ to XML code runs you end up with an IEnumerable collection of Product objects in the variable named “products”. You assign this collection of product data to the DataContext of the ListBox you created in XAML. The DisplayMemberPath property of the ListBox is set to “ProductName” so it will now display the product name for each row in your products collection. Summary In this article you learned how to retrieve an XML string from a table in a database, return that string across a WCF Service and store it into Isolated Storage on your Windows Phone. You then used LINQ to XML to create a collection of Product objects from the data stored and display that data in a Windows Phone list box. US govt e-card scam hits confidential data A fake U.S. government Christmas e-card has managed to siphon off gigabytes of sensitive data from a number of law enforcement and military staff who work on cybersecurity matters, many of whom are involved in computer crime investigations. Security tool uncovers multiple bugs in every browser Michal Zalewski reports that he discovered the vulnerability in Internet Explorer a while ago using his cross_fuzz fuzzing tool and reported it to Microsoft in July 2010. Zalewski also used cross_fuzz to discover bugs in other browsers, which he also reported to the relevant organisations. ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting :: Rolling with Razor in MVC v3 Preview

Razor is an alternate view engine for asp.net MVC. It was introduced in the “WebMatrix” tool and has now been released as part of the asp.net MVC 3 preview 1. Basically, Razor allows us to replace the clunky <% %> syntax with a much cleaner coding model, which integrates very nicely with HTML. Additionally, it provides some really nice features for master page type scenarios and you don’t lose access to any of the features you are currently familiar with, such as HTML helper methods. First, download and install the ASP.NET MVC Preview 1. You can find this at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cb42f741-8fb1-4f43-a5fa-812096f8d1e8&displaylang=en. Now, follow these steps to create your first asp.net mvc project using Razor: 1. Open Visual Studio 2010 2. Create a new project. Select File->New->Project (Shift Control N) 3. You will see the list of project types which should look similar to what’s shown: 4. Select “ASP.NET MVC 3 Web Application (Razor).” Set the application name to RazorTest and the path to c:projectsRazorTest for this tutorial. If you select accidently select ASPX, you will end up with the standard asp.net view engine and template, which isn’t what you want. 5. For this tutorial, and ONLY for this tutorial, select “No, do not create a unit test project.” In general, you should create and use a unit test project. Code without unit tests is kind of like diet ice cream. It just isn’t very good. Now, once we have this done, our brand new project will be created. In all likelihood, Visual Studio will leave you looking at the “HomeController.cs” class, as shown below: Immediately, you should notice one difference. The Index action used to look like: public ActionResult Index () { ViewData[“Message”] = “Welcome to ASP.Net MVC!”; Return View(); } While this will still compile and run just fine, ASP.Net MVC 3 has a much nicer way of doing this: public ActionResult Index() { ViewModel.Message = “Welcome to ASP.Net MVC!”; Return View(); } Instead of using ViewData we are using the new ViewModel object, which uses the new dynamic data typing of .Net 4.0 to allow us to express ourselves much more cleanly. This isn’t a tutorial on ALL of MVC 3, but the ViewModel concept is one we will need as we dig into Razor. What comes in the box? When we create a project using the ASP.Net MVC 3 Template with Razor, we get a standard project setup, just like we did in ASP.NET MVC 2.0 but with some differences. Instead of seeing “.aspx” view files and “.ascx” files, we see files with the “.cshtml” which is the default razor extension. Before we discuss the details of a razor file, one thing to keep in mind is that since this is an extremely early preview, intellisense is not currently enabled with the razor view engine. This is promised as an updated before the final release. Just like with the aspx view engine, the convention of the folder name for a set of views matching the controller name without the word “Controller” still stands. Similarly, each action in the controller will usually have a corresponding view file in the appropriate view directory. Remember, in asp.net MVC, convention over configuration is key to successful development! The initial template organizes views in the following folders, located in the project under Views: - Account – The default account management views used by the Account controller. Each file represents a distinct view. - Home – Views corresponding to the appropriate actions within the home controller. - Shared – This contains common view objects used by multiple views. Within here, master pages are stored, as well as partial page views (user controls). By convention, these partial views are named “_XXXPartial.cshtml” where XXX is the appropriate name, such as _LogonPartial.cshtml. Additionally, display templates are stored under here. With this in mind, let us take a look at the index.cshtml file under the home view directory. When you open up index.cshtml you should see 1: @inherits System.Web.Mvc.WebViewPage 2: @{ 3: View.Title = "Home Page"; 4: LayoutPage = "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml"; 5: } 6: <h2>@View.Message</h2> 7: <p> 8: To learn more about ASP.NET MVC visit <a href="http://asp.net/mvc" title="ASP.NET MVC 9: Website">http://asp.net/mvc</a>. 10: </p> So looking through this, we observe the following facts: Line 1 imports the base page that all views (using Razor) are based on, which is System.Web.Mvc.WebViewPage. Note that this is different than System.Web.MVC.ViewPage which is used by asp.net MVC 2.0 Also note that instead of the <% %> syntax, we use the very simple ‘@’ sign. The View Engine contains enough context sensitive logic that it can even distinguish between @ in code and @ in an email. It’s a very clean markup. Line 2 introduces the idea of a code block in razor. A code block is a scoping mechanism just like it is in a normal C# class. It is designated by @{… } and any C# code can be placed in between. Note that this is all server side code just like it is when using the aspx engine and <% %>. Line 3 allows us to set the page title in the client page’s file. This is a new feature which I’ll talk more about when we get to master pages, but it is another of the nice things razor brings to asp.net mvc development. Line 4 is where we specify our “master” page, but as you can see, you can place it almost anywhere you want, because you tell it where it is located. A Layout Page is similar to a master page, but it gains a bit when it comes to flexibility. Again, we’ll come back to this in a later installment. Line 6 and beyond is where we display the contents of our view. No more using <%: %> intermixed with code. Instead, we get to use very clean syntax such as @View.Message. This is a lot easier to read than <%:@View.Message%> especially when intermixed with html. For example: <p> My name is @View.Name and I live at @View.Address </p> Compare this to the equivalent using the aspx view engine <p> My name is <%:View.Name %> and I live at <%: View.Address %> </p> While not an earth shaking simplification, it is easier on the eyes. As we explore other features, this clean markup will become more and more valuable.

Tuple in C# 4.0

C# 4.0 language includes a new feature called Tuple. Tuple provides us a way of grouping elements of different data type. That enables us to use it a lots places at practical world like we can store a coordinates of graphs etc. In C# 4.0 we can create Tuple with Create method. This Create method offer 8 overload like following. So you can group maximum 8 data types with a Tuple. Followings are overloads of a data type. The Evolution Of C#

The first release of C# (C# 1.0) was all about building a new language for managed code that appealed, mostly, to C++ and Java programmers. The second release (C# 2.0) was mostly about adding what wasn’t time to built into the 1.0 release. The main feature for this release was Generics. The third release (C# 3.0) was all about reducing the impedance mismatch between general purpose programming languages and databases. To achieve this goal, several functional programming features were added to the language and LINQ was born. Going forward, new trends are showing up in the industry and modern programming languages need to be more: Declarative With imperative languages, although having the eye on the what, programs need to focus on the how. This leads to over specification of the solution to the problem in hand, making next to impossible to the execution engine to be smart about the execution of the program and optimize it to run it more efficiently (given the hardware available, for example). Declarative languages, on the other hand, focus only on the what and leave the how to the execution engine. LINQ made C# more declarative by using higher level constructs like orderby and group by that give the execution engine a much better chance of optimizing the execution (by parallelizing it, for example). Concurrent Concurrency is hard and needs to be thought about and it’s very hard to shoehorn it into a programming language. Parallel.For (from the parallel extensions) looks like a parallel for because enough expressiveness has been built into C# 3.0 to allow this without having to commit to specific language syntax. Dynamic There was been lots of debate on which ones are the better programming languages: static or dynamic. The fact is that both have good qualities and users of both types of languages want to have it all. All these trends require a paradigm switch. C# is, in many ways, already a multi-paradigm language. It’s still very object oriented (class oriented as some might say) but it can be argued that C# 3.0 has become a functional programming language because it has all the cornerstones of what a functional programming language needs. Moving forward, will have even more. Besides the influence of these trends, there was a decision of co-evolution of the C# and Visual Basic programming languages. Since its inception, there was been some effort to position C# and Visual Basic against each other and to try to explain what should be done with each language or what kind of programmers use one or the other. Each language should be chosen based on the past experience and familiarity of the developer/team/project/company and not by particular features. In the past, every time a feature was added to one language, the users of the other wanted that feature too. Going forward, when a feature is added to one language, the other will work hard to add the same feature. This doesn’t mean that XML literals will be added to C# (because almost the same can be achieved with LINQ To XML), but Visual Basic will have auto-implemented properties. Most of these features require or are built on top of features of the .NET Framework and, the focus for C# 4.0 was on dynamic programming. Not just dynamic types but being able to talk with anything that isn’t a .NET class. Also introduced in C# 4.0 is co-variance and contra-variance for generic interfaces and delegates. Implementing Search for BlogReader Windows 8 Sample

The BlogReader sample is an excellent place to start speeding up your Windows 8 development skills. The tutorial is available here and the complete source code is available here Create a project called WindowsBlogReader and create pages for ItemsPage.xaml, SplitPage.xaml and DetailPage.xaml and copy the corresponding code blocks from the sample listed above. Created a class file FeedData.cs and copy the code. Finally, create a class DateConverter.cs and copy the code associated with it. With that you should be able to build and run the project. There seems to be one issue in the sample feeds listed that the first week (feed1) doesn’t seem to expose it. So you can skip that and use the second feed as first feed. You will end up with one feed less but it works. I had demonstrated this in the recent TechDays at Chennai. How we can use the Search Contract and implement Search for within the Blog Titles. First off, we need to declare that the App will be using Search Contract, in the Package.appmanifest file Next, we would need a handle of the Search Contract when user types on the search window in Charms Menu. If you had completed the code sample from the link above, you would have ItemsPage.xaml and ItemsPage.xaml.cs. Open the ItemsPage.xaml.cs. Import the namespaces using System.Collections.ObjectModel and System.Linq. in the ItemsPage() constructor, right after this.InitializeComponent(); add the following code Windows.ApplicationModel.Search.SearchPane.GetForCurrentView().QuerySubmitted += ItemsPage_QuerySubmitted; This event is fired when users open up the Search Panel from Charms Menu, type something and hit enter. We need to handle this event declared in the delegate. For that we need to pull the FeedDataSource instantiation to the root of the class to make it global. So, add the following as the first line within the partial class FeedDataSource feedDataSource; Also, modify the LoadState method, as follows:- protected override void LoadState(Object navigationParameter, Dictionary<String, Object> pageState) { feedDataSource = (FeedDataSource)App.Current.Resources["feedDataSource"]; if (feedDataSource != null) { this.DefaultViewModel["Items"] = feedDataSource.Feeds; } } Next is to implement the ItemsPage_QuerySubmitted method void ItemsPage_QuerySubmitted(Windows.ApplicationModel.Search.SearchPane sender, Windows.ApplicationModel.Search.SearchPaneQuerySubmittedEventArgs args) { this.DefaultViewModel["Items"] = from dynamic item in feedDataSource.Feeds where item.Title.Contains(args.QueryText) select item; } As you can see we are almost using the same defaultviewmodel with the change that we are using a linq query to do a search on feeds which has the Title that matches QueryText. With this we are ready to run the app. Run the App. Hit the Charms Menu with Windows + C key combination and type a text to search within the blog. You can see that it filters the Blogs which has the matching text. We can modify the above Linq query to do a search for the Text in other attributes like description, actual blog content etc., I have uploaded the complete code since the original WindowsBlogReader Code is not available for download. Unit Testing in Entity Framework 4 - using CreateSourceQuery

There are many great tutorials on abstracting your EF4 context so that it can be tested against (without involving a DB). Two great (and similar) examples are here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/adonet/archive/2009/12/17/walkthrough-test-driven-development-with-the-entity-framework-4-0.aspx (oops, not enough rep. points to post second URL) basically you wind up querying your repository using linq-to-objects while testing, and linq-to-entities while running, and usually they behave the same, but when you start hitting more advanced functionality, problems arise. Here's the question. When using linq-to-objects against IObjectSet (ie, unit testing), CreateSourceQuery returns null, which will probably cause your entire query to crash and burn. ie O = db.Orders.First(); O.OrderItems.CreateSourceQuery().ToList(); Is there a way to get CreateSourceQuery to just return the underlying collection, rather than null when working with collections? Unfortunately EntityCollection is sealed, and so cannot be mocked. This isn't really the end or the world if EF4 won't let you abstract things to this level, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was missing.

Source-to-source compiler framework wanted

Dear all, I used to use OpenC++ (http://opencxx.sourceforge.net/opencxx/html/overview.html) to perform code generation like: Source: class MyKeyword A { public: void myMethod(inarg double x, inarg const std::vector<int>& y, outarg double& z); }; Generated: class A { public: void myMethod(const string& x, double& y); // generated method below: void _myMehtod(const string& serializedInput, string& serializedOutput) { double x; std::vector<int> y; // deserialized x and y from serializedInput double z; myMethod(x, y, z); } }; This kind of code generation directly matches the use case in the tutorial of OpenC++ (http://www.csg.is.titech.ac.jp/~chiba/opencxx/tutorial.pdf) by writing a meta-level program for handling "MyKeyword", "inarg" and "outarg" and performing the code generation. However, OpenC++ is sort of out-of-date and inactive now, and my code generator can only work on g++ 3.2 and it triggers error on parsing header files of g++ of higher version. I have looked at VivaCore, but it does not provide the infra-structure for compiling meta-level program. I'm also looking at LLVM, but I cannot find documentation that tutor me on working out my source-to-source compilation usage. I'm also aware of the ROSE compiler framework, but I'm not sure whether it suits my usage, and whether its proprietary C++ front-end binary can be used in a commercial product, and whether a Windows version is available. Any comments and pointers to specific tutorial/paper/documentation are much appreciated.
