• Require password to login to Nexus 7

  The default behavior in the Nexus 7 Image is to log straight in to the default user's desktop, bypassing the lightdm greeter. This seems like an acceptable behavior for testing the core but it's clearly insecure. I've changed the default password and would like lightdm to actually require the password to be entered, rather than just having a button that says "login". I've turned automatic login on and off in System Settings ? User Accounts but this doesn't help. Any suggestions?

  I'm looking for a label to describe the practice of using human-based computation methods or other means of "faking" an algorithm for the sake of getting a product or demo off the ground quickly without spending the time to develop an technical/scalable/analytical solution? Eg: using Amazon Turk to count the number of empty tables in a restaurant. I'm also looking to learn more about this subject, but not sure what to search for. Human-based computation is only one method, I'm interested in the general idea of pseudo-implementation. Any ideas, recommended reading? Thanks

• URL Encryption vs. Encoding

  At the moment non/semi sensitive information is sent from one page to another via GET on our web application. Such as user ID or page number requested etc. Sometimes slightly more sensitive information is passed such as account type, user privileges etc. We currently use base64_encode() and base64_decode() just to de-humanise the information so the end user is not concerned. Is it good practice or common place for a URL GET to be encrypted rather than simply PHP base64_encoded? Perhaps using something like, this: $encrypted = base64_encode(mcrypt_encrypt(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, md5($key), $string, MCRYPT_MODE_CBC, md5(md5($key)))); $decrypted = rtrim(mcrypt_decrypt(MCRYPT_RIJNDAEL_256, md5($key), base64_decode($encrypted), MCRYPT_MODE_CBC, md5(md5($key))), "\0"); Is this too much or too power hungry for something as common as the URL GET.

• How can I convince my boss that ANSI C is inadequate for our new project?

  A few months ago, we started developing an app to control an in-house developed test equipment and record a set of measurements. It should have a simple UI, and would likely require threads due to the continuous recording that must take place. This application will be used for a few years, and shall be maintained by a number of computer science students during this period. Our boss graduated some 30 years ago (not to be taken as an offense; I have more than half that time on my back too) and has mandated that we develop this application in ANSI C. The rationale is that he is the only one that will be around the entire time, and therefore he must be able to understand what we are doing. He also ruled that we should use no abstract data types; he even gave us a list with the name of the global variables (sigh) he wants us to use. I actually tried that approach for a while, but it was really slowing me down to make sure that all pointer operations were safe and all strings had the correct size. Additionally, the number of lines of code that actually related to the problem in hand was a only small fraction of our code base. After a few days, I scrapped the entire thing and started anew using C#. Our boss has already seen the program running and he likes the way it works, but he doesn't know that it's written in another language. Next week the two of us will meet to go over the source code, so that he "will know how to maintain it". I am sort of scared, and I would like to hear from you guys what arguments I could use to support my decision. Cowardly yours,

• Showing range on hexagonal grid

  Here is the situation. I have hexagonal board,and a unit on it,with speed or move value 4.Diffrent terrain has a diffrent cost.When i click on the unit,game should show me a move range. My solution was to check each hex in range of 4,with A* pathfinding,and if path cost was less than 4 then this hex was in range.Finally game nicely show me range of that unit. My question is: Is there other solution to search for range on hex grids or square grid,because even if i am really proud of what i did in my solution,i think,it is a little to exaggerated?:)) What make me ask this question?I noticed that when unit speed is 4 or 6 or even 8,time to computing range for my computer was really good,but when speed was 10 and more i noticed that i needed to wait few second to compute.Well in real games i rather dont see something like this and my A* pathfinding is rather well optimized,so im thinking that my solution is wrong. • What can I learn to build a (kind of) recommendation system?

  I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.

  I use CyanogenMod and ClockWork Recovery on my Nexus 7. How can my existing full nandroid backup be used to restore my device after installing Ubuntu? The instructions assume "recovery" would mean re-flashing the vanilla image, at factory, data-wiped condition. It would be useful to provide a .zip that can be flashed via Clockwork (or other) recovery usin ROM Manager or booting into recovery and back to whatever Nandroid backup there is - much as any other ROM is provided/used.

  I have a MySQL database and an automation script which modifies the data inside once a day. And these columns may have changed by an user manually. What is the best approach to make the system only update the automated data, not the manually edited ones? I mean yes, flagging the cell which is manually edited is one way to do it, but I want to know if there's another way to accomplish this? Just curiosity. BTW, the question is about cell values, not rows.

• What's the reason in your mind Exception are heavily used in Managed (C# and Java) language but not in C++?

  AFAIK, a lot of C++ projects don't allow exceptions and deny them in coding guidelines. I have a lot of reasons, for example, Exception is hard to handle correctly if your binary needs to be compiled by separate and different compilers. But it doesn't fully convince me, there is a lot of projects which are just using one compiler. Compared to C++, Exceptions are heavily used in C# and Java and the reason can only be that Exception are not bringing enough benefit. One point is Debugbility in practice. Exception can not get the call stack in C++ code, but in C# and Java you can get the call stack from Exception, it is significant and makes debugging easier. No-CallStack is not the fault of the Exception, it is the language difference , but it impacts the Exception usage. So what's the reason that exceptions are frowned upon in c++ programs?

SQL Server 2005, and later, implements a form of this model called row versioning concurrency.   We've all probably met someone like this, that developer who just knows that his language is the one true language and won't shut up about it. How do you deal like someone like this? I don't want to offend anyone (especially since the fanboy in my workplace is the senior developer). But I want to be able to use my own choice of scripting language when I have to write a throwaway script that never makes it to the repository and no one else need know existed. Thoughts that I had to dealing with this: Laugh it off - "Haha yeah maybe language X is a bit easier, I guess I'm a masochist!" Go with it - I'd really prefer to avoid this as I can't afford the drop in productivity associated with picking up a new language. Hide my language - Become a closet programmer and hide my monitor whenever I'm scripting or automating something. What would you suggest for this situation?

Here goes: I'm a Senior-level .NET/C# programmer from the UK, with 7 years of commercial experience in industry and looking to work over across the pond in the big ol' USA! In my method I have two ways to pass filters.   I want to learn new things. Initially I was a PHP programmer. Then I thought it was not enough. Then I started learning Java thing. It took me 3 months to learn. Java, J2EE, Spring, Hibernte, Spring Security, Spring Roo and many design patterns MVC and stuff like AOP, DI . I never knew that before but I got the idea what J2EE. After 3 months, I just made a simple page with Registration form integrated with Spring Security. I wanted to make one complete project in it but that was too much for me and I didn't want spend more time on it as then i need to host that as well so I left that. Then I started learning Python and made few sys admin scripts and then Django and now I am finishing a complete web app in Python. Now I want to learn C++, but before that I need to find out what i can do with it. Just like I know Python is very useful because I have my own servers so I can write scripting and websites so Python is good for me. But I am confused in which areas C++ can help me. I don't want to end up like I have with Java where either I have big projects or nothing for day to day use.

• Child to Parent linking - bad idea?

  I have a situation where my parent knows about it's child (duh) but I want the child to be able to reference the parent. The reason for this is that I want the child to have the ability to designate itself as most important or least important when it feels like it. When the child does this, it moves it to the top or bottom of the parent's children. In the past I've used a WeakReference property on the child to refer back tot he parent, but I feel that adds an annoying overhead, but maybe it's just the best way to do it. Is this just a bad idea? How would you implement this ability differently?

  I've just started out with OpenGL I still haven't really understood what Vertex Array Objects are and how they can be employed. If Vertex Buffer Object are used to store vertex data (such as their positions and texture coordinates) and the VAOs only contain status flags, where can they be used? What's their purpose? As far as I understood from the (very incomplete and unclear) GL Wiki, VAOs are used to set the flags/status for every vertex, following the order described in the Element Array Buffer, but the wiki was really ambiguous about it and I'm not really sure about what VAOs really do and how I could employ them.

  I love writing video games for fun, and often do that. I noticed, anyway, that most of the times implementing the gameplay itself doesn't take too much time to me (maybe because I already did that plenty times and know what and how to do for most of the things), but when I try to implement off-game stuff I get lost. By off-game I mean what is not gameplay: menus, cutscenes between levels, world map to choose levels, saving and loading status, managing replays ... Only tried to write a few of these a few times, but always failed; that's why I never really completed and distributed a game. Are these common problems? And where should I start to do this?   Lets say I have library "A2" as a dependency in a project. Library "A2" is derived from library "A1" where someone has done few changes to the library "A1" 's source code. Lets say there is a new version of "A1" I want to use the new version but no modification to its sourcecode at all. I am planning to identify what are the changes done to the original library when deriving library "A2" out of it and decorate the latest version of the library with those changes.
