• Integrating Amazon S3 in Java via NetBeans IDE

  To continue from yesterday, let's set up a scenario that enables us to make use of this drag/drop service in NetBeans IDE: The above service is applicable to Amazon S3, an Amazon storage provider that is typically used to store large binary files. In Amazon S3, every object stored is contained in a bucket. Buckets partition the namespace of objects stored in Amazon S3. More on buckets here. Let's use the tools in NetBeans IDE to create a Java application that accesses our Amazon S3 buckets. Create a Java application named "AmazonBuckets" with a main class named "AmazonBuckets". Open the main class and then drag the above service into the main method of the class. Now, NetBeans IDE will create all the other classes and the properties file that you see in the screenshot below. The first thing to do is to open the properties file above and enter the access key and secret: access_key=SOMETHINGsecret=SOMETHINGELSE Now you're all set up. This is simpler to setup than the scenario described yesterday. Also notice that there are other Amazon S3 services you can interact with from your Java code, again after generating a heap of code after drag/drop into a Java source file: I tried the above, e.g., I created a new Amazon S3 bucket after dragging "createBucket", adding my credentials in the properties file, and then running the code that had been created. I.e., without adding a single line of code I was able to programmatically create new buckets. The above outlines a handy set of tools and techniques to use if you want to let your users store and access data in Amazon S3 buckets directly from the application you've created for them.

• Best way to load application settings

  A simple way to keep the settings of a Java application is represented by a text file with ".properties" extension containing the identifier of each setting associated with a specific value (this value may be a number, string, date, etc..). C# uses a similar approach, but the text file must be named "App.config". In both cases, in source code you must initialize a specific class for reading settings: this class has a method that returns the value (as string) associated with the specified setting identifier. // Java example Properties config = new Properties(); config.load(...); String valueStr = config.getProperty("listening-port"); // ... // C# example NameValueCollection setting = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings; string valueStr = setting["listening-port"]; // ... In both cases we should parse strings loaded from the configuration file and assign the ??converted values to the related typed objects (parsing errors could occur during this phase). After the parsing step, we must check that the setting values ??belong to a specific domain of validity: for example, the maximum size of a queue should be a positive value, some values ??may be related (example: min < max), and so on. Suppose that the application should load the settings as soon as it starts: in other words, the first operation performed by the application is to load the settings. Any invalid values for the settings ??must be replaced automatically with default values??: if this happens to a group of related settings, those settings are all set with default values. The easiest way to perform these operations is to create a method that first parses all the settings, then checks the loaded values ??and finally sets any default values??. However maintenance is difficult if you use this approach: as the number of settings increases while developing the application, it becomes increasingly difficult to update the code. Are there other solutions to this kind of problem? In summary: Easy maintenance: for example, the addition of one or more parameters. Extensibility: a first version of the application could read a single configuration file, but later versions may give the possibility of a multi-user setup (admin sets up a basic configuration, users can set only certain settings, etc..). Object oriented design.

• Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset.   Demands / problems: I would like to bind multiple properties of an entity to controls in a form. Some of which are read only from time to time (according to business logic). When using an entity that implements INotifyPropertyChanged as the DataSource, every change notification refreshes all the controls bound to that data source (easy to verify - just bind two properties to two controls and invoke a change notification on one of them, you will see that both properties are hit and reevaluated). There should be user friendly error notifications (the entity implements IDataErrorInfo). (probably using ErrorProvider) Using the entity as the DataSource of the controls leads to performance issues and makes life harder when its time for a control to be read only. I thought of creating some kind of wrapper that holds the entity and a specific property so that each control would be bound to a different DataSource. Moreover, that wrapper could hold the ReadOnly indicator for that property so the control would be bound directly to that value. The wrapper could look like this: interface IPropertyWrapper : INotifyPropertyChanged, IDataErrorInfo { object Value { get; set; } bool IsReadOnly { get; } } But this means also a different ErrorProvider for each property (property wrapper) I feel like I'm trying to reinvent the wheel... • ExtJS GridPanel Scrollbar does not appear in IE7 but it does in Firefox, etc

  Setup I have an accordion layout containing a "properties" panel that nests two inner panels. The first inner panel holds a Ext.DataView, while the second panel is the Ext.grid.GridPanel in question. In the screenshot below, the white space containing the folder icon is the dataview, and below that is the gridpanel. Problem In Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, there is a scrollbar that appears when my gridpanel has an overflow of properties. It is only in Internet Explorer that it does not appear. I am, however, able to scroll using my mouse scroll button in all browsers, including IE. I've also tried removing our custom css file in case it was affecting it somehow, but there was no change in doing so.   So I'm having a problem with the charting engine from the WPF toolkit. We haven't moved our data to a proper object model, so the ItemSource is backed with a DataView. First attempt <chartingToolkit:ScatterSeries x:Name="TargetSeries" DataPointStyle="{StaticResource TargetStyle}" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=TargetSeriesData}" IndependentValueBinding="{Binding Path=TargetSeries_X}" DependentValueBinding="{Binding Path=TargetSeries_X}" /> This crashes because, I believe, it thinks the bindings are the values to plot or some sort of mismatch. • AutoMapper How To Map Object A To Object B Differently Depending On Context

  Calling all AutoMapper gurus! I'd like to be able to map object A to object B differently depending on context at runtime. In particular, I'd like to ignore certain properties in one mapping case, and have all properties mapped in another case. What I'm experiencing is that Mapper.CreateMap can be called successfully in the different mapping cases however, once CreateMap is called, the map for a particular pair of types is set and is not subsequently changed by succeeding CreateMap calls which might describe the mapping differently. I found a blog post which advocates Mapper.Reset() to get round the problem, however, the static nature of the Mapper class means that it is only a matter of time before a collision and crash occur. Is there a way to do this? What I think I need is to call Mapper.CreateMap once per appdomain, and later, be able to call Mapper.Map with hints about which properties should be included / excluded. Right now, I'm thinking about changing the source code by writing a non-static mapping class that holds the mapping config instance based. Poor performance, but thread safe. What are my options. What can be done? Automapper seems so promising.

• Visual Studio Debugging is not attaching to WebDev.WebServer.EXE

  I have a solution with many projects. On Debug, I have three web projects that I want to start up on their own Cassini ASP.NET Web Development servers. In the Solution Properties - Common Properties - Startup Project, I have Multiple startup projects chosen with the three web applications' Action set to Start. All three web development servers start, and all three web pages load. However, Visual Studio is only attaching to two of the WebDev.WebServer.EXE processes. I have to manually go attach to the third process in order to debug it with the debugger. This behavior just started happening, and I'm at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: Also to note, I have stopped and restarted the development servers several times with no change in behavior. Also, when attaching to the process manually, I see that the Type property of the two automatically attached WebDev.WebServer.EXE processes is Managed, while the Type property of the unattached WebDev.WebServer.EXE process is TSQL, Managed, x86. When looking at the project's properties, however, I am targeting AnyCPU, and do NOT have SQL Server debugging enabled. EDIT: Also to note, the two projects that attach correctly are C# web applications. <ProjectTypeGuids>{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{fae04ec0-301f-11d3-bf4b-00c04f79efbc}</ProjectTypeGuids> The project that is not attaching correctly is a VB.NET web application. <ProjectTypeGuids>{349c5851-65df-11da-9384-00065b846f21};{F184B08F-C81C-45F6-A57F-5ABD9991F28F}</ProjectTypeGuids> EDIT: Also to note, the behavior is the same on another workstation. • How to bind form collection back to custom model object that uses 2 custom objects in asp.net mvc?

  What I'm trying to do is rather basic, but I might have my facts mixed up. I have a details page that has a custom class as it's Model. The custom class uses 2 custom objects with yet another custom object a property of one of the 2. The details page outputs a fair amount of information, but allows the user to post a comment. When the user clicks the post button, the page gets posted to a Details action that looks something like this: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Details(VideoDetailModel vidAndComment) { ....} The only fields on the form that is posted are CommentText and VideoId. Here is what the VideoDetailModel looks like. public class VideoDetailModel { public VideoDetailModel() { Video = new VideoDTO(); Comment = new CommentDTO(); } public VideoDetailModel(VideoDTO vid) { Video = vid; Comment = new CommentDTO(); } public VideoDTO Video { get; set; } public CommentDTO Comment { get; set; } } VideoDTO has a few properties, but the ones I need are VideoId. CommentDTO's pertinent properties include CommentText (which is posting correctly) and a UserDTO object that contains a userId property. Everything other than the CommentText value is not being posted. I also have the following line on the ascx page, but the model value never gets posted to the controller. Html.Hidden("Model.Video.VideoId", Model.Video.VideoId); I'm really not sure what I'm missing here. I suppose if I added more form fields for the properties I need, they would get posted, but I only need 1 form entry field for the CommentText. If I could get the same Model objects value that were sent to the page to post with the page, that would help. I'll be happy to make any clarifications needed here. I'm just at loss as to what's going on.

• NHibernate Legacy Database Mappings Impossible?

  I'm hoping someone can help me with mapping a legacy database. The problem I'm describing here has plagued others, yet I was unable to find a real good solution around the web. DISCLAIMER: this is a legacy DB. I have no control over the composite keys. They suck and can't be changed no matter much you tell me they suck. I have 2 tables, both with composite keys. One of the keys from one table is used as part of the key to get a collection from the other table. In short, the keys don't fully match between the table. ClassB is used everywhere I would like to avoid adding properties for the sake of this mapping if possible. public class ClassA { //[PK] public string SsoUid; //[PK] public string PolicyNumber; public IList<ClassB> Others; //more properties.... } public class ClassB { //[PK] public string PolicyNumber; //[PK] public string PolicyDateTime; //more properties } I want to get an instance of ClassA and get all ClassB rows that match PolicyNumber. I am trying to get something going with a one-to-many, but I realize that this may technically be a many-to-many that I am just treating as one-to-many. I've tried using an association class but didn't get far enough to see if it works. I'm new to these more complex mappings and am looking for advice. I'm open to pretty much any ideas. Thanks, Corey

• WinForms Application Form "Shakes" When Audio Playing

  I have a C# game program that i'm developing. it uses sound samples and winsock. when i test run the game most of the audio works fine but from time to time if it is multiple samples being played sequentially the application form shakes a little bit and then goes back to its old position. how do i go about debugging this or present it to you folks in a manageable manner? i'm sure no one is going to want the whole app code in fear of virus attacks. please guide me.. EDIT: i have not been able to pin down any code section that produces this result. it just does and i cannot explain it. • BackgroundWorker Not working in VSTO

  I have a background worker. Before I invoke the worker I disable a button and make a gif visible. I then invoke the runworkerasync method and it runs fine until comleteion. On the 'RunWorkerCompleted()' I get a cross thread error. • ORM model and DAO in my particular case

  I have the DB structure as follows: table STUDENT (say, id, surname, etc) table STUDENT_PROPERTIES (say, name_of_the_property:char, value_of_the_property:char, student_id:FK) table COURSE (id, name, statusofcourse_id) table STATUSOFCOURSE (id, name_of_status:char ('active','inactive','suspended' etc)) table STUDENT_COURSE (student_id,course_id,statusofcourse_id) Let's try to pick up domain objects in my database: Student and Course are main entities. Student has a list of courses he attends, also he has a list of properties, that is all for this student. Next, Course entitity. It may contain a list of students that attend it. But in fact, the whole structure looks like this: the starting point is Student, with it's PK we can look a list of his properties, then we look into the STUDENT_COURSE and extract both FK of the Course entity and also the Status of the combination, it would look like "Student named bla bla, with all his properties, attends math and the status of it is "ACTIVE". now, quotation 1) Each DAO instance is responsible for one primary domain object or entity. If a domain object has an independent lifecycle, it should have its own DAO. 2) The DAO is responsible for creations, reads (by primary key), updates, and deletions -- that is, CRUD -- on the domain object. Now, first question is What are entities in my case? Student, Course, Student_Course, Status = all except for StudentProperties? Do I have to create a separate DAO for every object?

• How to dispatch a new property value in an object to the same property of two other objects

  In WPF, I've three objects exposing the same DependencyProperty (let's say it's an integer). I want all three property values to remain synchronized, i.e. that whenever the int value changes in an object, this value is propagated to the two other objects. I think of multibinding to do the job, but I don't know how to detect which object changed, thus which value should be used and propagated to the other objects. I understand I could solve the problem by creating an X_Changed event in the 3 types and then have each object registering to the two other objects event. I don't like this "manual" way and would prefer to bind the 3 properties together.
