    In Cnet today I saw something interesting: According to Sony, it plans to release PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.21 on Thursday to achieve one goal: eliminate the "Other OS" option currently available in all pre-Slim models of the video game console. The feature allowed PS3 owners to install an operating system--in almost every case, Linux--onto the PlayStation 3.     I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. I'm working on more screencasts like that, from different angles. For example, one will methodically explain each and every window in NetBeans IDE; another will step through the creation of an application from conception to deployment; while another will focus on the NetBeans IDE extension points and how easily they can be used to add new features to NetBeans IDE. The screencast approach has, I think, a lot of advantages. They take less time to make and they seem to be more effective, in several ways, than tutorials. Hearing someone talk through a scenario seems to also put things in a clearer perspective than when you have everything written out in a document, where small details get lost and diversions are more difficult to make.   • OmniGraffle for iPad Now Supports VGA Output

    I have (surprisingly) gotten a lot of comments over the last post about using OmniGraffle as an interactive EA tool.  The news flash/update is that it now supports VGA output.  I had sent a note to the developers and they responded that this was a highly sought after feature…well, they delivered. I have tried it informally and it works, thought there is a little lag between the drawing on the screen and the output, but it is not terrible.   • Is Live Chat a valuable feature?

    Does having a live chat feature on a website increase conversions enough to cover the cost administration? Most of the data I have found comes from companies selling live chat solutions and is unreliable in my opinion. Do users find this as a valuable feature or an annoyance? Personally, I'm annoyed by sites that use live chat especially when a little box pops up without my explicit request, but if users find this valuable then I should consider implementing it. Any concrete data is appreciated.
