• No sound on fresh install of 13.10

  I installed a new copy of 13.10 today and cannot get my audio to work. Speakers test good on other devices, enabled in the BIOS, worked this morning in a Windows environment. I ran all of the available updates through apt-get. aplay -l lists my card (which tells me Ubuntu recognizes the hardware, I have been looking around the web and trying various things to no avail. Pulse folder permissions seem fine, I've reinstalled ALSA, and the card shows both digital and analog in the system settings sound section. I have tried this guide: Sound Troubleshooting Guide As well as looked through these forums under the tags sound and 13.10 Anyone have any ideas that may help me?

  Earlier this year we showed you how an LED POV staff could be used to visualize network data. This build takes it to another level and allows you to imprint entire words and images into photos. Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff. • How are "Json.org"-like specs graphs called and how can I generate them?

  In http://www.json.org Douglas Crockford shows the specs of the JSON format in two interesting ways: In the right side column he lists a text spec that looks like a YACC or LEX listing. In the main body of the homepage, he put several images that gives us a simple way to visually understand the valid sequences that composes a JSON string. Those images look like a description of the path that a finite state automaton would follow when parsing the JSON string. Wich are the names (if any) of that listing format and that kind of graphics? Is there any software that renders a source file containing the specification into that kind of images?

• How to make the switch to C++11?

  I've been programming in C++ for a while now, but mostly thinks centered around the low-level features of C++. By that I mean mostly working with pointers and raw arrays. I think this behavior is known as using C++ as C with classes despite me only having tried C recently for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised how languages like C# and Java hide these details away in convenient standard library classes like Dictionaries and Lists. I'm aware that the C++ standard library has many convenience containers like vectors, maps and strings as well and C++11 only adds to this by having std:: array and ranged loops. How do I best learn to make use of these modern language features and which are suitable for which moments? Is it correct that software engineering in C++ nowadays I'd mostly free of manual memory management? Lastly, which compiler should I use to make the most of the new standard? Visual Studio has excellent debugging tools, but even VS2012 seems to have terrible C++11 support.

  I need to manually install the drivers for my graphics card, which is an ATI 2600 xt. But I am using a 64-bit platform and to do so i need the ia32-libs package. i have scoured the net for fixes, workarounds etc. but have found none that work. the output i get after trying apt-get is: Reading package lists... • What's the recommended way of doing a HUD for an android game?

  Basically the question is in the title. I'm creating a RTS game and I will need buttons like attack move / attack ground, etc. I am not using any engine. When people do games in OpenGL for android (my case), do they ever use android components to control the game or do they create their components in the game? What are the general recommended approach, if there's any? How about more complex components like scrolling lists of items , etc? • PNG file loading error in ImageMagick

  I'm trying to understand the tutorial 16 at http://ogldev.atspace.co.uk, which requires the image processing library ImageMagick. But when I run the tutorial, I encountered an following error: freeglut: failed to change scree settings Error loading textures 'test.png': no decode delegates for this image format 'C:/../appdata/magick-6024a_cIJcw90t-j'@error/constitute.c/ReadImage/552 I searched for google and found that my ImageMagick library do not have PNG Delegaes, but when I checked for the information of ImageMagick, it sees PNG in its delegate lists. Command line: convert -configure Result: LIB_VERSION 0x687 DELEGATES: bzlib, freetype, jpeg, jp2, lcms, png, tiff, x11, xml, wmf, zlib Could you explain to me this error, thanks so much!

• My system can't be updated

  After I installed some updates I restarted my computer. Some days later I wanted to check for updates because the update-manager shows me the following: "The packet information has been updated last 24 days ago." and a window appeared. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. But my Internet connection works fine. I downloaded and installed and run the banish404 software and it does not work. • FGLRX Drivers Keep Crashing | "Installation Media" reads Natty even though I'm in Precise

  I recently switched back to Ubuntu after a year or so of hardly touching my Ubuntu partition, and upgraded from Natty. Every time I start up, i get the "A problem has occurred..." popup, but it won't let me report it because Precise is not in beta. The details on the report show a segfault, and going through all the details, I notice that it lists Natty under "InstallationMedia" -- I just installed these drivers, so I'm really unsure why it's saying this. I wish I could copy this entire error report, but I see no way of doing that (is it stored somewhere in /var/log?). I'm new to the Unity interface (it's why I stopped using Ubuntu to begin with, but now that I'm getting used to it I'm liking it better). Thanks.

• Find out if there is a local user logged in when logging in over ssh

  I need to run some calculations on a machine that I can only access remotely but also serves as a work station. There are many of them and I want to pick a "free" one. Free means in this case that no one is logged in locally. My first try was the who command, but for some reason it only lists "selected" users and I can't really find out how they are selected. Next try: ps aux | cut -d " " -f1 | sort | uniq: better showing a bunch of demons but also the local user that was not displayed by who. My current solution is to go in and do ps aux | grep "gnome-session" which is better but still gives me a lot of junk. Ideally I am looking for something that I can include in my ssh profile that warns me about (active) local users when I log in.

  I was moving a lot of databases from one SQL Server to another, and my applications were giving me errors saying "Login failed for <user>". The user was already in the database with appropriate rights to allowed objects in the database. I tried mapping the user to the database and that's when I got this message: "User Already Exists in the Current Database"... I googled and found this very useful post about orphaned users when moving databases. These are the steps you should take to fix this issue: First, make sure that this is the problem. This will lists the orphaned users: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Report' If you already have a login id and password for this user, fix it by doing: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'user' If you want to create a new login id and password for this user, fix it by doing: EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'user', 'login', 'password'

• Concurrency Utilities for Java EE 6: JSR 236 Rebooting

  JSR 166 added support for concurrency utilities in the Java platform. The JSR 236's, a.k.a Concurrency Utilities for Java EE, goal was to extend that support to the Java EE platform by adding asynchronous abilities to different application components. The EG was however stagnant since Dec 2003. Its coming back to life with the co-spec lead Anthony Lai's message to the JSR 236 EG (archived here). The JSR will be operating under JCP 2.8's transparency rules and can be tracked at concurrency-spec.java.net. All the mailing lists are archived here. The final release is expected in Q1 2013 and the APIs will live in the javax.enterprise.concurrent package. Please submit your nomination if you would like to join this EG.

  The Mojarra 2.1.2 release was cut a few days ago. Here are the full Maven coordinates : api, impl. You can also get to the release notes and to the list of bugs fixed in this release. This is scheduled for inclusion into the upcoming GlassFish 3.1.1 release. In fact it's already integrated in the latest promoted build (#8) which also includes woodstox 4.1.1. Weld 1.1.1.Final has already been integrated a few builds ago. The JSF team is now working on JSR 344 (JSF 2.2) for which you can get a status by visiting http://jsf-spec.java.net/ and the associated mailing lists. A first expert draft is now available.

I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did. • Does NASA license the software that it develops?

  NASA provides a visualization software called Panoply. There is a Credits and Acknowledgments page that acknowledges and lists the licenses of software dependencies, but provides no information about its own license. I have looked at other software produced by NASA, including the source code for GISS and can not find any information about a licence. The closest information that I can find is in the FAQ for the global climate model EdGCM Global that says the code is in the "public domain" is it standard practice at NASA to release code into the public domain? are there exceptions? Can I assume that Panoply is public domain and can be used without restriction other than than those imposed by licenses of software dependencies? Is the absence of specific permission to reuse the code a concern (this issue was raised in the answer to a separate question) How common is this practice across government agencies?

  I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.
