• Implmenting RLE into a tilemap or how to create a large 3D array?

  Currently I've been using a 3D array for my tiles in a 2D world but the 3D side comes in when moving down into caves and whatnot. Now this is not memory efficient and I switched over to a 2D array and can now have much larger maps. The only issue I'm having now is that it seems that my tiles cannot occupy the same space as a tile on the same z level. My current structure means that each block has its own z variable. This is what it used to look like: map.blockData[x][y][z] = new Block(); however now it works like this map.blockData[x][y] = new Block(z); I'm not sure why but if I decide to use the same space on say the floor below it wont allow me to. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can add a z-axis to my 2D array? I'm using java but I reckon the concept carries across different languages. Edit: As Will posted, RLE sounds like the best method for achieving a fast 3D array. However I'm struggling to understand how I would even start to implement it? Would I create a 4D array the 4th being something which controls how many to skip? Or would the x-axis simply change altogether and have large gaps in between - for example [5][y][z] would skip 5 tiles? Is there something really obvious here which I am missing? The number of z levels I'm trying to have is around 66, it would be preferably that I can have up to or more than 1000 in x and y.

• RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Java code to blink more LEDs

  Now, it's time to blink the other GPIO ports with the other LEDs connected to them. This is easy using Java Embedded, since the Java programming language is powerful and flexible. Embedded developers are not used to this, since the C programming language is more popular but less easy to develop in. We just need to use a dynamic Java String array to map to the pinouts of the GPIO port names from the previous diagram posted. • Good 2D Platformer Physics

  I have a basic character controller set up for a 2D platformer with Box2D, and I'm starting to tweak it to try to make it feel good. Physics engines have a lot of knobs to tweak, and it's not clear to me, writing with a physics engine for the first time, which ones I should use. Should jumping apply a force for several ticks? An impulse? Directly set velocity? How do I stop the avatar from sticking to walls without taking away all its friction (or do I take away all the friction, but only in the air)? Should I model the character as a capsule? A box with rounded corners? A box with two wheels? Just one big wheel? I feel like someone must have done this before! There seem to be very few resources available on the web that are not "baby's first physics", which all cut off where I'm hoping someone has already solved the issues. Most examples of physics engines for platformers have floaty-feeling controls, or in-air jumps, or easily exploitable behavior when temporary penetration is too high, etc. Some examples of what I mean: A short tap of jump jumps a short distance; a long tap jumps higher. Short skidding when stopping or reversing directions at high velocity. Standing stably on inclines (but maybe sliding down them when ducking). Analog speed when using an analog controller. All the other things that separate good platformers from bad platformers. Dare I suggest, stable moving platforms? I'm not really looking for "hey, do this." Obviously, the right thing to do is dependent on what I want in the game. But I'm hoping someone somewhere has gone through the possibilities and said "well technique A does feature X well, technique B does Y well, but that doesn't work with C", or has some worked examples beyond "if (key == space) character.impulse(0, 1)"

• Weird behavior when debugging ASP.NET Web application: cookie expires (1/1/0001 12:00AM) by itself on next breakpoint hit.

  I'm working on ajaxified (Telerik AJAX Manager) ASP.NET application using Visual Studio 2010 (runs with admin privileges) and IIS 7.5. Basically, everything on the page is inside update panels. As for cookies I have custom encrypted "settings" cookie which is added to Response if it's not there on session start. Application runs smoothly, problem was arising when I started the debugging it: Actions:  no breakpoints set, F5 - application has started in debug mode, browser window loaded. I login to site, click on controls, all is fine. Next I set *any* breakpoint somewhere in code, break on it then let it continue running, but once I break again (immediately after first break) and check cookie: it has expired date 1/1/0001 12:00AM and no data in value property. I was storing current language there, which was used inside Page's InitializeCulture event and obviously exception was being raised. I spent several hours trying deleting browser cache, temporary ASP.NET files etc, nothing seemed to work. Same application has been tested on exactly same environment on another PC and no problems with debugging there. After all I've found the solution: visual studio generates for every solution additional .suo file where additional settings are stored, like UI state, breakpoints info, etc, so I deleted it and loaded project again, tried debugging - everything is ok now.

• How to properly structure a project in winform?

  A while ago I started to create a winform application and at that time it was small and I did not give any thought of how to structure the project. Since then I added additional features as I needed and the project folder is getting bigger and bigger and now I think it is time to structure the project in some way, but I am not sure what is the proper way, so I have few questions. How to properly restructure the project folder? At the moment I am thinking of something like this: Create Folder for Forms Create Folder for Utility classes Create Folder for Classes that contain only data What is the naming convention when adding classes? Should I also rename classes so that their functionality can be identified by just looking at their name? For example renaming all forms classes, so that their name ends with Form. Or is this not necessary if special folders for them are created? What to do, so that not all the code for main form ends up in Form1.cs Another problem I encountered is that as the main form is getting more massive with each feature I add, the code file (Form1.cs) is getting really big. I have for example a TabControl and each tab has bunch of controls and all the code ended up in Form1.cs. How to avoid this? Also, Do you know any articles or books that deal with these problems?

• Bing Maps WPF Hack

  I've spent the past couple of days adding the Bing Maps WFP Control to an application I'm developing. I kept running into a strange thing that was driving me crazy. I have the control in the bottom of a StackPanel, under a Grid. No matter how hard I tried, setting the Height of the Bing control to Auto would cause the ActualHeight to always be 60.93. Now, I still don't know why this is happening. Truth be told, I'm not too sure I care. I did, however, find a reasonable hack around the problem. I do know the size of everything else. As such, I tied into the SizeChanged Event of the StackPanel. Using this, I could set the Height to the correct size based on the new size of the panel. private void ResizeMap( object sender, SizeChangedEventArgs e ) { myMap.Height = ((StackPanel)sender).ActualHeight - 75.0; } The hard-coded number is was because I had a fixed height of controls above my map. If you have dynamic elements, you could easily iterate through them and delete out the portions. So, there you have it. It's not much, but it annoyed the Smurf out of me for a brief period of time. Since I never found an answer, I figured I'd share.

• How do I re-enable the backlight?

  Since Oneiric, if I leave my machine (HP Mini 110 netbook) unattended and it goes into power-save mode, the backlight gets disabled. How can I turn it back on? Note that the keyboard backlight controls (Fn+F4 and Fn+F3) don't have any effect in this situation. I've already filed a bug, but filing a bug doesn't fix my problem. I tried this workaround posted in this bug report dealing with Acer laptops: sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 However, if anything, that command makes things worse. In the general case, I can see a little bit if I'm in a dark room with a flashlight aimed just so. But after running setpci I can't see anything. And I find the setpci documentation to be utterly incomprehensible, so I don't know whether I need to tweak my command somehow or whether I'm completely barking up the wrong tree. Update: I've found a workaround: I'm now booting with the kernel parameter acpi=off. This disables power management, which prevents the machine from going into power saving mode and thus failing to come back up correctly. Of course, not having power management means that I can't use suspend or do anything to manage power other than powering it off (even then, I have to manually use the power switch). Also, it prevents me from using Unity 3D or Gnome Shell, forcing me into Unity 2C or Gnome Classic. So, I'd really like to be able to stop using this hack.

• Animation API vs frame animation

  I'm pretty far down the road in my game right now, closing in on the end. And I'm adding little tweaks here and there. I used custom frame animation of a single image with many versions of my sprite on it, and controlled which part of the image to show using rectangles. But I'm starting to think that maybe I should've used the Animation API that comes with android instead. Will this effect my performance in a negative way? Can I still use rectangles to draw my bitmap? Could I add effects from the Animation API to my current frame-controlled animation? like the fadeout-effect etc? this would mean I wont have to change my current code. I want some of my animations to fade out, and just noticed that using the Animation API makes things alot easier. But needless to say, I would prefer not having to change all my animation-code. • Get Started with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder

  Up on otn/java is a very useful article by Oracle Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer Mark Heckler, titled, “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder.”  Heckler, who has development experience in numerous environments, shows developers how to develop a JavaFX application using Scene Builder “in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee, while learning your way around in the process”. He begins with a warning and a reassurance: “JavaFX is a new paradigm and can seem a bit imposing when you first take a look at it. But remember, JavaFX is easy and fun. Let's give it a try.” Next, after showing readers how to download and install JDK/JavaFX and Scene Builder, he informs the reader that they will “create a simple JavaFX application, create and modify a window using Scene Builder, and successfully test it in under 15 minutes.” Then readers download some NetBeans files:“EasyJavaFX.java contains the main application class. We won't do anything with this class for our example, as its primary purpose in life is to load the window definition code contained in the FXML file and then show the main stage/scene. You'll keep the JavaFX terms straight with ease if you relate them to the theater: a platform holds a stage, which contains scenes. SampleController.java is our controller class that provides the ‘brains’ behind the graphical interface. If you open the SampleController, you'll see that it includes a property and a method tagged with @FXML. This tag enables the integration of the visual controls and elements you define using Scene Builder, which are stored in an FXML (FX Markup Language) file. Sample.fxml is the definition file for our sample window. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. • HTML5 video capture and streaming?

  I'm working on kind of an educational site, where there are teachers and students around the world (potentially). Since it's a non-profit site, and I don't have the need for it to be done tomorrow (kind of a side project of something bigger), I wanted to know the best way to figure out how to do this. I'm not a programmer by trade, I've been on the systems side of things for years, but I understand most technology and the question here is more how to gauge what to do so I can get the right resources in place. That said... here's what I am looking at. I figure the future is HTML5, and that's probably where I'd rather spend my efforts given that it will be cross platform and without the need for plugins. It will work on mobile as well. Question is, how well does HTML5 handle input media, say desktop capture and camera, or on mobile perhaps, where I'd want to use the user's phone camera, etc. Second question is dynamic streaming... I've read about MPEG DASH, then there are technologies like Smooth Streaming (which I think given the way Silverlight is going is going to be gone or useless), then also Apple and Flash, but if I'm doing HTML5 it doesn't benefit me. Any ideas here would be really helpful, and the more detail the better! :) That's about it... there are free chat services out there like using the MSN Web Chat controls (how good they are, I don't know, but worldwide most people have a Hotmail/MSN account) so I can use that for chat. I don't know its limitations of course, but that's something if people know or have suggestions, then I'm all ears. Thanks for the help, I greatly appreciate it!

When user (browser) sends a request to server an action method of a controller gets invoked; sometimes you may require executing a custom code before or after action method gets invoked, this custom code is called as Filter. 12. What are the different types of Filters in MVC? a. Authorization filter b. Action filter c. Result filter d. Exception filter [Do not forget the order mentioned above as filters gets executed as per above mentioned sequence] 13. Explain the use of Filter with an example? Suppose you are working on a MVC application where URL is sent in an encrypted format instead of a plain text, once encrypted URL is received by server it will ignore action parameters because of URL encryption. To solve this issue you can create global action filter by overriding OnActionExecuting method of controller class, in this you can extract the action parameters from the encrypted URL and these parameters can be set on filterContext to send plain text parameters to the actions.     14. What is a HTML helper? A HTML helper is a method that returns string; return string usually is the HTML tag. The standard HTML helpers (e.g. Html.BeginForm(),Html.TextBox()) available in MVC are lightweight as it does not rely on event model or view state as that of in ASP.Net server controls.

• Access functions from user control without events?

  I have an application made with usercontrols and a function on main form that removes the previous user controls and shows the desired usercontrol centered and tweaked: public void DisplayControl(UserControl uControl) I find it much easier to make this function static or access this function by reference from the user control, like this: MainForm mainform_functions = (MainForm)Parent; mainform_functions.DisplayControl(uc_a); You probably think it's a sin to access a function in mainform, from the usercontrol, however, raising an event seems much more complex in such case - I'll give a simple example - let's say I raise an event from usercontrol_A to show usercontrol_B on mainform, so I write this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); }; Now what if I want usercontrol_B to also have an event to show usercontrol_C? now it would look like this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); uc_b.show_uc_c += (s2,e2) => {usercontrol_C uc_c = new usercontrol_C(); DisplayControl(uc_c);} }; THIS LOOKS AWFUL! The code is much simpler and readable when you actually access the function from the usercontrol itself, therefore I came to the conclusion that in such case it's not so terrible if I break the rules and not use events for such general function, I also think that a readable usercontrol that you need to make small adjustments for another app is preferable than a 100% 'generic' one which makes my code look like a pile of mud. What is your opinion? Am I mistaken?

  I am new to JME3 game engine but I know Android XML GUI layouts pretty good. I have a simple layout here and I cant figure out what is wrong.
