• Audio and video streaming using Network Simulator in Linux

  I am working on a project which is to show the simulation of streaming of audio and video data in wireless networks. I want to show the simulation that involves a base station, with few wireless stations. The base station should start sending data once it computes a certain value . On receiving the data, each wireless must begin communicating with the base station. I have gone through basic NS-2 tutorials from over here but I am not getting how to go about integrating it with my project. Can anyone tell me how to do it using NS2 or any other network simulator?

• Windows 7 will not install a root certificate

  I have a web service that uses a self-signed certificate, so I need to install the certificate as a Trusted Root so that I can avoid all the security errors that having a self-signed certificate brings with it. Using Windows 7, I'm going to: Start > Internet Explorer > Run as Administrator > Tools > Internet Options > Content > Certificates > Trusted Root Certification Authorities > Import > (select file) > Next > OK, and Windows reports Import Successful However, the import is NOT successful. The certificate does not show in the list of trusted roots, and certificate errors still show up. If I import the certificate into the Trusted Publishers container, it imports correctly, but this does not solve my security errors. Any ideas?

• Multimedia PDF (Audio, Video and Links) That works on Desktop and iOS

  We've got a client that wants to have a PDF that has embedded audio, video and links. Using Acrobat Pro 9.x I've been able to embed all three no problem. They all work/playback if I use Acrobat Pro/Acrobat Reader. But don't show up in OS X's Preview at all. They also don't show up in iOS. Links work everywhere, but no multimedia. So I tried creating a similar document via Apple's iBooks Author, then exported as a PDF. Links work, but multimedia doesn't seem to work anywhere. Is there any way to make a PDF that works universally with embedded links and multimedia?

• Windows XP does not list WPA wireless networks

  What can be the reason that Windows XP does not show WPA-encrypted wireless networks? The laptop I have problems with is an older model (Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100) with Windows XP SP3 on it, fresh install. The wireless network card in it is an Agere product that lists as "Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card". The networks showed up perfectly before I first tried to connect to one (it was set to WPA2). The connection failed (the card supports WPA only), then something must have happend and Windows hides these networks now. A manually configured WPA setup via Windows' own wizard works, I'm using it right now. The network just won't show up in the list of available network on its own. I suspect that XP incorrectly set a flag somewhere that this network card does not support WPA. Is there such a flag, and if so, how can I change it back?

  I have noticed a recent trend in requesting programmers who are rockstars. I get it, they're looking for someone who is really good at what they do. But why (pray) make the reference to a rockstar? Do these companies really want these traits as a real rockstar? Party all night and wake up to take care of quick business in the morning? Substance abuse, Narcissism with celebrity, Compensation well exceeding their management, Excellent at putting on a short-lived show, Entertainment instead of value, 1 hit (project) wonders or single-genre performers, Et cetera What is wrong with Senior or Principal Software Engineer who has an established and proven passion for the business? Rather do we mean quite the opposite, someone who: rolls up the sleeves and gets to work, takes appropriate direction and helps influence teams, programs in lessons' learned and proper practices, provides timely communication to the whole team, can code and understand multiple languages, understands the science and theory behind computation, Is there a trend to diversify the software engineering ranks? How many software rockstars can you hire before your band starts breaking up? Sure, there are lots of folks doing this stuff on their own, maybe even a rare few who do coding for show, but I wager the majority is for business. I don't see ads for rockstar accountants, or rockstar machinists, or rockstart CFOs. What makes the software programmer and their hiring departments lean towards this kind of job title?

• Iptables NAT logging

  I have a box setup as a router using Iptables (masquerade), logging all network traffic. The problem: Connections from LAN IPs to WAN show fine, i.e. SRC=192.168.32.10 - DST=60.242.67.190 but for traffic coming from WAN to LAN it will show the WAN IP as the source, but the routers IP as the destination, then the router - LAN IP. I.e. SRC=60.242.67.190 - DST=192.168.32.199 SRC=192.168.32.199(router) - DST=192.168.32.10 How do I configure it so that it logs the conversations correctly? • What's the best way to manage error logging for exceptions?

  Introduction If an error occurs on a website or system, it is of course useful to log it, and show the user a polite message with a reference code for the error. And if you have lots of systems, you don't want this information dotted around - it is good to have a single centralised place for it. At the simplest level, all that's needed is an incrementing id and a serialized dump of the error details. (And possibly the "centralised place" being an email inbox.) At the other end of the spectrum is perhaps a fully normalised database that also allows you to press a button and see a graph of errors per day, or identifying what the most common type of error on system X is, whether server A has more database connection errors than server B, and so on. What I'm referring to here is logging code-level errors/exceptions by a remote system - not "human-based" issue tracking, such as done with Jira,Trac,etc. Questions I'm looking for thoughts from developers who have used this type of system, specifically with regards to: What are essential features you couldn't do without? What are good to have features that really save you time? What features might seem a good idea, but aren't actually that useful? For example, I'd say a "show duplicates" function that identifies multiple occurrence of an error (without worrying about 'unimportant' details that might differ) is pretty essential. A button to "create an issue in [Jira/etc] for this error" sounds like a good time-saver. Just to re-iterate, what I'm after is practical experiences from people that have used such systems, preferably backed-up with why a feature is awesome/terrible. (If you're going to theorise anyway, at the very least mark your answer as such.)

• Dependencies not met on 12.04?

  Now I'm very aware that there are many questions out there that are quite similar to what I'm experiencing, but I have looked through many and I have not found a suitable answer. You are welcome to suggest questions that are similar, but I doubt that it will help. Getting on to the issue at hand, whenever I do anything that involves installation, whether it be codecs for videos, new programs or whatever the latter, I always get the 'Dependencies not met' error. In addition, I also get this notification in the panel: When clicked, the menu says this: "An error occurred. Please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or run apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Broken Count 0'. This usually means your installed packages have unmet dependencies." It gives me three items to click: Show Updates Install all updates Check for Updates And then finally: Show Notifications (with a tick) Preferences When I try 'Install all Updates' (also Check Updates Install) it says this: and also this: As well as 'Ubuntu has experienced an internal error' and 'Did this error occur when moving from one version of Ubuntu to another?' (I clicked NO, because it didn't). So I took it's advice and ran sudo apt-get install -f This is what results: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... Done The following extra packages will be installed: libapt-pkg4.12:i386 The following packages will be upgraded: libapt-pkg4.12:i386 1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 87 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • Explorer.exe does not starts itself at the startup

  The problem I am facing is whenever I start my PC after use login window where it should show the start screen my PC just doesn’t show anything except for a mouse cursor. I can press CTRL ALT DELETE and go into task manager go into File Run New Task and then run explorer.exe sometimes this works and start screen becmoes accesible but sometimes I have to repeat it multiple times to make it work or sometimes I just have to restart my PC. More over while on the black screen and being able to access task manager If I right click processes there and open containing folder that also work I can access all my program/files from there but all that is missing is my desktop and start screen Can anybody help me with this? Plus can anybody tell like for explorer there is explorer.exe is there a .exe file which would start the start screen ?

• excel - merge cells including a zip code

  Hi all, I have the need to merge a bunch of cells that comprise an address (street, city, state, zip) into a single cell. No problem except with the zip code. The zip cell has only 4 digits for any zip that starts with 0. So, I change it's format to be Special - Zip Code. That makes the cell itself show the beginning 0, but the merged cell still does not show the leading 0. Does anyone know how to get the leading 0 in the merged column? Thanks Evan

• DHCPPloc.exe or equivalent for Windows 7?

  There seems to be some DHCP funnyness going on so I need to run something to show me what's going at a DHCP level. Before I upgraded my machine to Windows 7 I used DHCPloc.exe from the Windows XP support tools, and it worked like a charm. I can't seem to find Support Tools for Windows 7, and trying to use the XP tools in compatibility mode doesn't work (I tried, it fails to open a receiving socket). I need a tool to monitor DHCP traffic, and ideally one that lets me filter it to exclude DHCP traffic from our trusted DHCP servers and only show me un-authorised DHCP traffic.

• Why is MySQL making the CPU run at about 80%?

  MySQL is eating up about 80% of my CPU for no reason as far as I can see. Right now this server is rarely used, more of a test site I set up that will eventually be a used for production once I fix small problems like this. I run 3 instances of MySQL but it seems that my first instance is taking up all the CPU. When I turn off the first instance and leave the other two on everything runs fine. Any suggestions? I tried Show Processlist and no statements are being run besides "Sleep" and the query "Show Processlist" (obviously) at the time it's using up all this CPU. my.cnf is basic. I did not optimize or change any MySQL settings. Do you think this would cause such strange behavior? The machine is running Linux Centos 5.7 64 bit and MySQL 5.0.95. Thanks

• Active Directory Replication across Sites slow or not working

  I've just inherited (isn't it always the way!) a Windows Domain. The domain is spread across 2 sites. Site01 has 3 DCs & Site02 has 2 DCs. If I create a user in either site, the other DCs in that site, immediately replicate and show the new user. The new user is not shown in the other site though. If I manually run the following command, everything syncs and the new user appears: repadmin /syncall issdc01 /APed In the Inter-Site Transports DEFAULTIPSITELINK the replicate every time value is set to 180 minutes. I thought this was the solution, but on another Windows Domain, this is the same, but replication takes place across sites immediately. What can I check to resolve this issue? • TraceTune: Larger Files and History

  I updated TraceTune over the weekend.  I increased the trace file upload size to 20MB.  We’ve processed over half a million rows of trace data so far and I’m confident this won’t kill the server. I added average CPU and average disk reads to the screen that lists the SQL statements in a trace file. I only added these two.  I’m pretty sure average writes isn’t that import.  I’m still thinking about average duration.  I’m trying to balance showing you what you need with a clean, simple interface.  Plus I have a way to see the averages that I describe further down. TraceTune now keeps the last 10 files that you’ve uploaded and will give you some basic details about each file. I think the last change I made is the most interesting. For each SQL statement, I show the history of that statement. You’ll see each trace file where this statement was found.  It will list the averages for CPU, reads, writes and duration.  This will quickly show you if you’re improving the performance of that query.  In my screen shot above you can that even though the execution counts are very different the averages are consistent. If you want to see what queries are consuming the most resources on your server give TraceTune a try.

• NIC is receiving, but not transmitting at all?

  I'm trying to fix a very strange problem remotely on a machine at a customer site. The machine is a Dell PowerEdge, I believe a 1950 (haven't verified, but the lspci output matches specs I found.) The machine has two similar NICs, identified as Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 12) by lspci, and using the bnx2 driver. (I suspect these are on-board and on the same controller, which is what I'm accustomed to for this type of machine.) The primary interface eth0 works perfectly, and is in fact how I am ssh'd in. However, the secondary interface eth1 is not transmitting. I can see this in ifconfig output, for example, where the TX field is always 0. However, it is receiving, and tcpdump shows ARP requests coming from the ISP's gateway on the other side. The interface is physically connected to a Siemens BSTU4 modem, configured by the ISP. The link is properly set to 10MBps and full duplex, without negotation, as the ISP requested. A small /30 subnet is configured. For the sake of anonimity, let's say the machine is 3.3.3.2/30, and the ISP's gateway .1. The machine has no firewall settings whatsoever. Even running something like arping -I eth1 3.3.3.1, and running tcpdump alongside, shows no traffic whatsoever being transmitted on the interface. (But the other side keeps steadily sending ARP requests, and that is all that can be seen.) What could be causing this? • PHP won't run on Fedora 15

  I have followed this exact tutorial on installing php on a Fedora 15 system. I have all the necessary packages installed with no errors. Yet the simple phpinfo() test page will show - it will show a blank page. When I try to see the source, I see it downloaded my .php file as plain text and loaded it in the browser. So I am guessing for some reason php module is not loaded in httpd. Does anyone have any idea why? P.S. I am really hoping SELinux this time has nothing to do with this!

• How can I get nvidia-96 installed?

  I'm at my wits end here. This is my last effort before I go back to Windows. I need to get nvidia-96 proprietary driver installed. Synaptic won't install it because it says it has dependencies. I installed every single dependency it listed except for "xorg-video-abi-10" which does not show up as an item that can be installed. I have no idea what to do. Using 11.10 with a NVIDIA Geforce 3 GPU. Anyone know how to get this dang driver installed? @fossfreedom: the opensource driver is extremely slow. So slow that the OS is unusable—words appear seconds after I type them—programs take forever to perform actions. Also it is causing my monitor to turn on and off for no reason. @yossile: synaptic shows that I have xserver-xorg-core installed. And xserver-xorg-core-udeb does not show up as something that can be installed. @papseddy: when I try to install the downloaded nvidia driver it says it won't work until I disable Nouveau kernel driver. I have tried everything to get this dang Nouveau kernel driver disabled. Nothing has been successful.

• Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?
