• How to get my laptop to detect SD cards inserted into its built-in card reader?

  My laptop has a built-in SD Card reader but it cannot detect one when inserted. • LibreOffice english spelling dictionary missing

  I've got two machines, same OS (Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64), same LibreOffice ppa's (ppa:libreoffice/ppa). One has the "English spelling dictionaries, hyphenation rules, thesaurus..." extension in the extension manager, the other doesn't. Each upgraded using the ppa from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1. Can anyone provide some insight as to how to get this extension onto the second machine? I can remove LibreOffice from the second machine and install the packages from the LibreOffice site, but would prefer to keep the ppa - as I don't then need to remember to upgrade.

• Announcing Spacewalk Support for Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Customers

  Over the years, customers migrating to Oracle Linux have asked for options to provide a transitional solution for their existing system management tools (such as Red Hat Satellite Server) while evaluating and planning migrations to Oracle's Enterprise Manager, which is offered at no additional charge with Oracle Linux Support Subscriptions.  Based on this request, we are pleased to announce support for the open-source community project, Spacewalk, which is the basis for both Red Hat Satellite Server and SUSE Manager.  Effective today, customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support subscriptions have access to a fully supported Spacewalk build which can be setup to easily manage Oracle Linux systems.   Spacewalk support for Oracle Linux requires Oracle Linux 6, x86_64 for the server and provides support for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6 (x86, x86_64) clients.  This solution requires Oracle Database 11g Release 2 as the  supported database repository for Spacewalk with Oracle Linux.  Within the next several weeks, a limited use license for the Oracle Database will be included with this offer.  Until this is complete, customers may use an existing Oracle database license or they may begin by downloading a 30-day trial license from eDelivery.  Customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier subscriptions will automatically have access to the channel hosting the supported build.  Please review the release notes for further instructions. • MacBook Pro (5) touchpad stops working after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04, my MacBook Pro's touchpad stopped working. It works fine on the login screen, but after logging in it stops working. (Answering my own question, in the hope that it saves someone else a bit of head scratching. I'm a new user, so couldn't answer in a separate post for the next few hours). After the upgrade, your Gnome desktop configuration may have gone awry. There are a few settings which enable or disable the touchpad in certain contexts which may need tweaking to get the touchpad working again. Here's how I got mine working again: Hit Alt-F2, and run 'gconf-editor' Navigate to desktop-gnome-peripherals Ensure that peripherals-touchpad:touchpad is enabled. Ensure that peripherals-bcm5974:disable_while_other_device_exists is disabled. 'bcm5974' is probably specific to my MacBook Pro's hardware, so you may need to search around for variable disable_while_other_device_exists under the entries listed under peripherals. HTH

• Why is there a lack of Backports of Optional 10.10 or later Packages in repos?

  This question is about backports again, but is specific to the difference in availability of packages. A specific example of this would be the two gcc packages in 10.10's repos: gcc (which is 4.4), and gcc-4.5 (which is gcc 4.5). While this change is in 10.10's repositories, such optional packages aren't included in the 10.04 LTS repositories, and the option to have a gcc-4.5 compiler in 10.04 might help several people (such as myself, who needs the 4.5 compiler for University, and I can't upgrade to 10.10 because it doesnt operate correctly on my system). Is there a reason a lack of such optional packages is in the 10.04 repositories?

• Dynamic MMap ran out of room when trying to sudo apt-get anything

  I was having an error in Update Manager that asks me to do a partial upgrade and it fails. Now I can't sudo apt-get install anything. I tried to fix it, and now I can't sudo apt-get anything. Every time, I get this output: Reading package lists... Error! E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf) E: Error occurred while processing libuptimed0 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_universe_binary-i386_Packages W: Unable to munmap E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it, and I fear that if I try something that probably doesn't work that it will make my problem worse. (Just for reference I am currently running 10.04 (Lucid) on my machine.)

• Can I import an existing member data used in old ASP to a new ASP.NET membership database? [closed]

  I have an old website that I designed and still maintain using old ASP that has a membership database (MS-SQL) that I built from scratch. It is a very simple database that has all the user information in one table (including login info and personal info) and then details and other odds and ends in other tables. It is WAY past time to upgrade this to .NET, especially since I need to add a Paypal payment system into it as soon as I can. I've designed several other sites with membership in .NET, but they have all been from scratch. Is there an easy way to transition from the old ASP site to a new .NET membership database without losing the data? There are hundreds of users with thousands of records relating to those users that I'd rather not lose, if possible. Any ideas on a relatively painless way to do this?

  I recently ran an upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 and was using Nvidia current tested drivers and all seemed ok at first. Then suddenly every time I started the computer and shutdown, the graphical plymouth logo changed to text.The only changes I made to try to correct this issue were; sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current nvidia-settings sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current and this made no change at all to the display. Then I read somewhere that Nouveau drivers may be the answer, so I installed them to use instead, and hey presto, the shutdown screen displays the Plymouth splash. However with startup, I get a stable purple screen, for a while, and than a thick black horizontal line appears, really ugly-looking, and then the loging screen appears to be ok. Can I correct the login screen same as the shutdown screen?

• When is the default storage rule not really the default storage rule?

  In 11g WebCenter Content (WCC) introduced dispersion rules in the vault and weblayout directory paths to better distribute content across the directories. The dispersion rule was based on dRevClassID. The only problem with this is that dRevClassID did not remain the same when you copied content from one WCC instance to another using Archiver like in a contribution-consumption scenario. This could cause problems because the web-viewable path would not be the same between the contribution and consumption instances. In the PS5 (11.1.1.6.0) release of WCC they addressed this by configuring the File Store Provider (FSP) so that all new content would use a storage rule with a dispersion rule based on dDocName, which would stay the same when content was copied to another WCC instance. To support migration from older versions of WCC they left the default storage rule unchanged and created a new storage rule called DispByContentId and made that the default storage rule for all new content. I only stumbled upon this a while back when I was trying to change the FSP configuration so that all content used a webless storage rule. I changed the default storage rule, restarted WCC, and checked in a new content item. To my surprise the new content was not created as webless. I struggled with this for a while until I noticed there were multiple storage rules defined in the FSP configuration. When I looked at the default value for the xStorageRule field in Configuration Manager, sure enough it was no longer default, but was now DispByContentId. Once I updated the DispByContentId storage rule to webless and restarted WCC all my new content was now created using the webless storage rule, just like I wanted. I noticed when I was creating this blog post that the default storage rule is also listed on the File Store Provider Information page, but I guess I didn't see that when I originally did this.

• Black screen after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  Just upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and all I got was a black screen. The hardware I'm running is Asus Zenbook UX31A (Intel GPU). I do hear that the login screen drums do play, so the system does boot to login screen. When I try to boot using kernel 3.11.0-12 recovery mode, it tells me "initctl: event failed". Then if I go on an press ctrl+alt+f2, log in and command startx, it dies because "Fatal server error: no screens found". Here are some logs from /var/log/Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.com/ZQasUKJx Kernel 3.8.0-31 work ok, as did things before the upgrade.

  Everything I try with apt-get fails. I am installing Ubuntu server for the first time. It is version 12.04 LTS. When I run: apt-get update I get failed to fetch http://gb.whatever goes here...... If I run apt-get install install build-essential I get "unable to locate package build-essential" I have looked at the sources.list but do not know what should and shouldn't be in there.   After doing a reboot of Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS (after an apt-get dist-upgrade) my server load (on a 16GB) machine goes insane (around 80) for about 10 or 15 minutes The only things I can think of are these two processes: /usr/bin/mysql --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf --skip-column-names --batch -e ? select concat('select count(*) into @discard from `',?   after following this command to update wifi drivers:1- Boot into Ubuntu 2- Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T 3- Type in the following (verbatim!) sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade press Enter, the command will prompt for your password (the one you use to login into Ubuntu), type it and press Enter. Wait for it to finish updating your system. Now type: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer Wait for the command to finish installing the driver, when done restart your computer. i get a message after the first command when installing has done saying not enough space so it aborts! what do i do to fix this

• Packaging a web application for deploying at customer site

  I want to develop a django webapp that would get deployed at the customer site. The web app would run in a private cloud environment (ESX server here) of the customer. My web app would use a mysql database. The problem is I would not have direct access/control of the webapp. My question is, how to package such a web application with it's database and other entities so that it's easier to upgrade/update the app and it's database in future. Right now the idea I have is that I would provide a vm with the django app and database setup. The customer can just start the vm and he would have the webapp running. What are the other options I should consider?

• Can't print, CUPS package corrupted and hangs on re-install

  When I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 (Maverick), the upgrade process got stuck on the post-installation of the CUPS package. I had to kill processes and run several forced updates before I could finally get regular updated. Ever since I can't print - The printed file gets messed up and crashes the printer. I also can't re-install CUPS, as each time the installation hangs and I have to kill it before it completes. I tried to find a workaround for this problem, but in vain. Does anyone know how to bypass this? Or at least why can the post-installation hang, and how to re-install a problematic package? Some system specs and other hints: Dell D630 laptop running Ubuntu 10.4, Gnome desktop, standard LAN network, printing to an LPD server. Everything worked fine on 9.10. Also, the printed files themselves are not corrupted. The problem does not seem to be Evince-specific, but common to all printouts.

• Is there an alternative to k3dsurf in 12.10?

  I've just upgraded to Quantal Quetzal on my home computer and discovered that the program K3dSurf has been removed from the repositories. (Presumably since it doesn't seem to be in active development and still depends on qt3 libraries.) Does anyone know of a similar program (user-friendly and versatile) for drawing 3D surfaces? This has been a mission-critical program for me when teaching multivariable calculus, so I won't be able to upgrade at work unless I can find a replacement. (Yes, I could install directly from the program's website, but dealing with obsolete libraries sounds like a giant headache.)

• SDL2 with OpenGL -- weird results, what's wrong?

  I'm porting an app to iOS, and therefore need to upgrade it to SDL2 from SDL1.2 (so far I'm testing it as an on OS X desktop app only). However, when running the code with SDL2, I'm getting weird results as shown on the second image below (the first image is how it looks with SDL, correctly). The single changeset that causes this is this one, do you see something obviously wrong there, or does SDL2 have some OpenGL nuances I'm unaware of? My SDL is based on changeset dd7e57847ea9 from HG (since then there is one "Allow specifying of OpenGL 3.2 Core Profile on Mac OS X" commit, not sure if that would help).

• Why are KDE components being installed/updated on 12.04 with GNOME?

  I am not yet fully versed with the components installed by default on my machine, so I will apologize in advance if my question is silly. shows that a lot many of (what I assume are) KDE components (libk*, kde*, etc.) are being installed/updated on my machine. That is just the output from sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade -y from a few minutes ago. Can anyone tell me why? Can I safely remove them? If yes, how? • Compiz and Clearlooks window border breaks active/inactive title bars

  When I turn on Compiz with the Compiz tray switcher and I use Clearlooks, Dust Sand, or possibly any title bar style that normally has window icons on right, some window title bars will not change. Instead, they stay selected or unselected randomly. Some windows, like Ubuntu Software Center and CCSM are unaffected. This problem only happens with GTK window manager. I am using the Malteworld compiz ppa for Emerald. The problem does not happen with plain Metacity, or a title bar style that normally has close button on right. Edit: It still happens with Emerald. Reinstalled with upgrade option (yeah, 11.04 to 11.04) and still same problem. So maybe faulty package?
