  Now that self-healing cloud servers are becoming more and more popular, I am currently torn between the decision if I should setup a HAproxy failover for my VPS or if should save myself the trouble and just put my sites on a self-healing cloud server. Does it still make sense to setup your own failover system (HAproxy + 2 or more servers for example) when self healing cloud seems like a practical solution? They seem to do the same job or am I missing something?

• System freezes for 5 seconds when seeking in or skipping to songs and videos

  When I start playing a new video or MP3 or skip to a time when playing them, my system hangs for a couple of seconds. A restart solves this problem, but only for a while. It does not matter which player I use (VLC, Media Player, Winamp, Zoom Player), which media files or if they are located on a network drive or on the local hard drive. Everything else works flawlessly and after the playing has started, there are not problems - until I switch to another file. Additionally, when the Winamp playlist continues to the next song, the system does not hang. When I skip to the next song manually, the system hangs. I've been using Windows XP for years and consider myself a fairly professional windows user, but I have no idea what could cause this. Dual-core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP3, Audigy card with kxproject. Worked flawlessly for years. Would be glad if anyone could help.

• Looking for a good Web Server that is cheap

  I am a Project Manager, and former Lead Developer for a software portal system that requires a forum software to run. I am in need of a server that is cheap, reliable, and supports the latest PHP (5.2+), MySQL, unlimited e-mails (preferably), a cPanel, multiple sub-domains (atleast 3+). Currently I am paying $34.95 USD/month (approx. $420 USD/year). This is too high for me to pay to keep the site running. I just recently became Project Manager and in charge of Finances and I'm extremely concerned for the future of Dream Portal. With those prices I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it running for too long. Can someone please tell me of a good server that meets all of the requirements that I listed above that is cheaper on a yearly basis? Note: Currently on a Dedicated Server with limited disk space at 15000 MB (15 GB), monthly bandwidth = 500000 MB, 50 emails limit, 20 sub-domains limit, 30 FTP accts., and 25 SQL Databases.

• MacBook Pro (with DVI) to HDMI, including audio - possible?

  I have a MacBook Pro with DVI. I'd like to hook it up to my living room TV for movies and such but I want to keep it out of the way. I already have HDMI cables run to the basement where I have a cable box. Is there something I could you to connect the MBP video and audio to HDMI so I only need the one cable to the TV? I'm looking for a quality picture but I don't want to spend a ton of $. I've googled a bit, but I'm looking for some recommendations.

Is there a way I can host a website without a domain name, or to register a domain name for free? • How could one track all emails sent from employees?

  My client runs a small business. This business has a small number of employees. For various reasons, my client would like to be able to have a copy of all of the emails sent from their employees BCC'd to them. The net effect here would be similar to the access they would have if they hosted their email through Exchange but the business is too small to make this a feasible option. They are currently hosted through GoDaddy. I have not investigated it myself personally but apparently GoDaddy can do something along these lines for all incoming email but not for outgoing email. Is there a way to set up email accounts for a particular domain to where a specified admin user could be copied on all outgoing email? UPDATE: I've modified the title to reflect that it's employees not just users who are the goal here. Also I forgot to mention how they currently do email through GoDaddy - POP3. I think maybe IMAP is also possible through GoDaddy, not sure. And yes, the bottom line here is to basically emulate a feature of a larger-class platform through a smaller, cheaper platform. Opinion-only answers should probably be relegated to the comments. For the sake of argument let's say that any legal requirements have been met.

• Best FFDShow settings for upscaling SD content to 1080p HD?

  Hi there, I'm running Windows Media Center 7 with ffdshow-tryouts for the decoding of many of the popular video formats. It works great. I've now upgraded my television from SD to 1080p HD and, naturally, I've still got a large number of existing MP4/XviD/DivX items of content which is in SD. I'd like, therefore, to modify the settings of ffdshow so that they are upscaled to 1080p as best as possible. I appreciate that they won't be as good as their HD equivalent - but on the flip side, I'm pretty certain I can do more than just resizing the picture to get the best possible output. Can anyone recommend the best settings in ffdshow to do this? For example, should I apply a sharpen mask? Or Noise Reduction? Or Deinterlace? Alternatively, would it be better to keep them at their current resolution and let the TV (Samsung Series 5 LE32C580) do the upscaling? Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to add a watermark and a credits image to all of my old videos. I downloaded them off YouTube so they are all flv (H.264?). Is there some software that will allow me do simple edits in batches? I know a little bit of Python and tried looking at some of the library but they all seem like overkill (and way above my head). So is there a solution besides getting some software and going through all my videos and doing it manually? They are all mostly the same length, but it would be nice to specify a relative position for my credits. e.g. show a static image for 10 seconds when the video is at 95%

  Howdy, take a look at this please http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te-HVN8y_QE&hd=1 . Notice the embedded "logo" in the upper left corner? How blurry and pixelated it is? This is the original image: http://i.imagehost.org/0148/movie_watermark.png ! The stretching, blurring, pixelating etc. most likely comes from resizing the original video from 1920x1200 to 1280x720 and encoding it with h.264. Can anyone tell me how I can prevent the blurring, unsharpening and pixelating and retain their original quality? How do I exclude the logo from the whole encoding process and just slap it there in its original format and form?

• ISPconfig3 + CentOS 6.2 , confused on how to move forward after initial install?

  I installed ISPCONFIG3 on centos 6.2 using the great guide on howtoforge.com. Everything is up and running and I can access ISPCONFIG via a browser. However I am not sure how to move forward with the initial setup so I can setup the very first account and get my website live. Details: Only have 1 server, the centos+ispconfig is running on a virtual machine of XEN XCP. I setup the server name to be server1.mydomain.com. I only have 2 usable ips. I plan to use them as follows: xx.xx.xx.01 : For my website and the websites of all accounts I add. xx.xx.xx.02 : For ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com (Yea I know they should be different ips at different locations, but this is what I have to work with at the moment.... ) I registered the nameservers at my registrar with the .02 ip. I want to use bind and ISPconfig to run the DNS on my server itself and not via my registrar. Right now if I go to the .01 IP it shows the centos+apache successful install page. So to break it down basically I am not sure where to start when it comes to: (What to consider and what to do to setup the first domain on the server) Telling bind to use the name server domains with .02. Setting up my First website(which will be my main website) in ISPconfig so mydomain.com resolves properly to my server. Make it so when you go to the .01 IP, it either redirects or shows the contents of my main website. (If this can't be done, then any advice is appreciated) Making sure that when I add a new domain, it automatically puts in the proper information for the domain so it points to the right mail, database, dns, entry. If I overlooked a tutorial then please feel free to let me know, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. Some of the tutorials I found were not specific to doing everything on only one server with Centos+Apache+Bind. Right now all I did was install centos and install ISPconfig3. Trying to move forward correctly so I don't mess up everything I did by not knowing what to do. Thank you in advance!!

• How can I split a stereo audio track of a movie into two separate audio tracks?

  I often record TV shows with a hard disk recorder/DVD writer, burn them as VRO file and convert to MP4 with Handbrake. The shows are bilingual broadcasts with two mono audio channels instead of a stereo one: dubbed voice on the left, original voice on the right. The TV set and VLC are both perfectly capable to play only the left or the right channel, but other video players may just offer to select between different stereo audio tracks (like they are present on many DVDs). I'd like to have an easy process to create MP4 or MKV files of these shows where the two audio channels are split into two separate audio tracks. The only way that I know of is to extract the audio track (e.g. using MPEG Streamclip), split it into two tracks using an audio tool like Audacity and then merge the audio tracks back (using a DVD authoring software, don't remember all details). Clearly not a thing to repeat regularly. Preferably a solution should run on Mac OS X, but Linux or Windows solutions are very welcome, too.

• Java: very slow tomcat and too big war file

  I created some sort of RESTful API backend for a mobile app. It's written completely in Java using Jersey as Framework. At the moment no database is used, it's all in the memory, but this is no problem so far (it's only for prototyping purposes). I ordered the smallest package from digital ocean and installed tomcat7. All in all tomcat works, but I have three major problems: 1) It takes a long time until tomcat deploys the app: I deploy it per tomcat manager and it takes about 2 minutes unit the site works (excl. war upload time). 2) The war files are quite big (16MB): I don't know why they are so big. There are no database dependencies and most logic is written in plain java. Okay, we are using jersey, but 16MB are a lot for the logic of a small webservice. 3) I have to restart tomcat all 3 days or so. It looks like a memory leak or something similar. If the app runs for a few days the response time is quite high and the server seems to be frozen. It works again, if I restart tomcat per ssh. You can find my mvn pom file right here. Do you have some tips? Are there good tomcat alternatives?

• How do I run multiple MVC apps within a subdomain on IIS7?

  Hello and thanks for looking. Background I am currently wrapping up a development contract and the client would like for me to push a build of the application to their IIS 7-based server in which they would like to run multiple MVC apps. One of the issues I have off of the bat is that this server is already a subdomain on their larger network. So, if I enter SERVERNAME in my browser, it automatically directs to SERVERNAME.COMPANYNAME.COM. Now, this is just fine if I place my application in the default website/root. In this scenario, clicking a link that requests admin.html directs to `SERVERNAME.COMPANYNAME.COM/admin.html' as usual. BUT they want me to place the app in a subdomain on this server so that they can also run other apps on the same server. So I assume that I need MYAPP.SERVERNAME.COMPANYNAME.COM but I have no idea how to do that. Complicating matters is that my app and the future ones they wish to install are all MVC based which intercepts and re-writes URLs. I assume that this takes care of itself if I can just successfully get my app into a subdomain to begin with. What I have tried Creating a new site on the server in it's own app pool Setting the binding for that site to MYAPP.SERVERNAME.COMPANYNAME.COM Setting the binding for that site to MYAPP Setting the binding for that site to MYAPP.SERVERNAME Setting the binding for that site to MYAPP.SERVERNAME.COM Setting the binding for that site to MYAPP.COMPANYNAME.COM Nothing is working.   I bought a domain name on name.com & I want to use free webhosting on 110mb.com By default name.com integrates services of Google apps. Name server entries are ns1.name.com ns2.name.com ns3.name.com ns4.name.com When I registered on 110mb.com it gave me two addresses ns1.110mb.com ns2.110mb.com This is where I'm lost. The concept is that "Domain name should point to an address of the server where the website is hosted" right? Then why are these 4 entires by default. How exactly is it working? should I remove these 4 and then add 110mb.com servers or just append 110mb.com server addresses to name.com ones. I would like to use google apps. If I change these name server addresses would that remove google apps? I especially want to use email service of google. And I really don't understand what is CNAME, MX, or something something. I want to learn about these stuff & how it exactly works. When I search for webhost tutorial. I'm unable to find any fruitful results.

  I need recommendations for a scalable web host for a high volume WordPress web site. For my purposes, high-volume might be 100K-500K visitors/hour. Might think towards a 1M/hour burst rate as a "high water mark." I know WP isn't the highest-performing platform out there (ha!), but it's non-negotiable. I can do "the usual optimizations" (e.g. put static files in a CDN, run and follow the advice of performance analyzers like YSlow, etc). But it will still be WordPress, and there will be a dozen or so plugins involved. So, where to host the site? Most "what's the best WordPress host?" discussions seem to focus on lowest-cost. I need the opposite. What are the high-volume, scalable, or clustered WordPress hosts with which you've had great experiences?

• How to host multiple FLEX applications in IIS7

  Hello, I manually deploy a FLEX application to my web server (IIS 7). There are two virtual directories, 1.) Default 2.) myFlexApp1. myFlexApp1 is where my working FLEX application resides. I now need to deploy a different FLEX application (let's call it myFlexApp2) to the same web server. I set up a virtual directory for [myFlexApp2] and it complains about the "bindings" using port 80, which is already used by [myFlexApp1]. I have tried to give them separate host names in their bindings properties. For example, myFlexApp1.mydomain.com and myFlexApp2.mydomain.com. I can never get [myFlexApp2] to show from an external browser. I was able to get only one or the other to display, but never could run both. Here is what I need: myFlexApp1.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp1 calendar.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp2 test.mydomain.com -- myFlexApp1 where test.mydomain.com is the default URL. Is this possible? What am I doing wrong? I even tried to edit the hosts file in [C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc] but that didnt work either. How can I serve up two FLEX applications on IIS 7? It shouldn't be this hard!

• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. • ping alternative to measure routing distance (on Windows)

  Hello, in order to measure aprroximately the rouitng distance (to see if a server is close to my country or too far away) I usually use ping command. I'm in Italy, when I ping Italian servers I get 36ms when I ping US EAST servers I get an average of 120ms when I ping US WEST servers I get an average of 200ms etc. Unfortunately some web hosters turn off the ping reply on their servers, so my question is how do I detect the routing distance, is there another easy to use command in Windows to accomplish the same task? And in my control panel in the hosted domain section its showing "1 Hosted Domains / 1 Domains Listed".however on clicking on that its showing an error that "The selected domain name has not been registered yet. Please register it from the Domain Manager section first" now whenever i am trying to access my website by using dns1. its accessible but when i am using WWW. its not accessible for example my domain name is example.com if i will type dns1.example.com then my webpage will open but when i type www.example.com its showing "Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.example.com" And for information 24 hours has been passed since i have registered my name servers.

• greengeeks drupal install imagemagik 'path /usr/bin/convert' does not exists error

  I just signed up with greengeeks. I have a drupal install (6.19) on my public_html directory. The ImageMagic Toolkit can't find the binary - the error I get is "the path /usr/bin/convert" does not exist. when I use a terminal and do 'which convert' it shows /usr/bin/convert also, I have a second drupal install in an addon domain - it's home directory is above the public_html directory (in a directory called '/home/myusername/addons/seconddomain') The drupal install in the addon domain finds the imagemagick binary just fine. I am at a total loss as to why the original install cannot find the binary. The tech support guys at greengeeks have no clue either. Any ideas of things to try?

• Please help to troubleshoot the issue with Inspiron 8600 laptop

  Hello! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop which display stopped working all of the sudden. It started to show a purple fog pattern along with some color vertical lines. I talked to Dell support and they told me that is a screen gone bad and I should get a new one which I did. But surprisingly the new display won't work either! The pattern on the screen is different but still no picture. So I tried to connect the old display to another laptop (Lenovo Z61) and it turns out it works just fine with it! So please help me to identify the cause of the issue. I think it could be a video card but the external display works flawlessly. I appreciate your thoughts about it so I won't need to buy spares which I don't need. Thank you! P.S. Please do not suggest to contact Dell support again.
