    I have a system where employees can upload files. There are three ways Upload to my account in public, private or protected mode Upload to department account in public, private or protected mode Upload to organization account in public, private or protected mode where public is visible to anyone, private to the group or person only and protected to anyone in the organization. All the files for an organization are stored in a directory say, /files/<organizationId>/, on file server like files +-- 234809 | +img1.jpg | +doc1.pdf +-- 808234 | +doc2.pdf I am storing file-path and privacy level in DB. So, I can control whether to show link to a file URL to an user -- on a given page. The problem is, I do not have any control over file's URL... so, if some one types the URL to img1.jpg in his browser's address bar, there is no way to know whether a logged in user is eligible to see img1.jpg. I believe that it likely that some tech person somewhere tried to describe the Internet to him and this was the best analogy they could come up with. What analogy would you use to describe the Internet, and issues related to bandwidth, latency, etc, to your grandmother or someone else with no IT experience.

Specifically, being able to see who else is working on the document and what they are changing in real time. Something like an embedded etherpad. Are there any good solutions out in the wild? Im sure building something like this would be a significant project.

It sounds easy but there are always some obstacles. So I would like to know if there is any working example that supports all major browsers. I searched in google and found many lightbox but none of them has a print button built-in.

  • MVC design question for forms

    Hi, I'm developing an app which has a large amount of related form data to be handled. I'm using a MVC structure and all of the related data is represented in my models, along with the handling of data validation from form submissions. I'm looking for some advice on a good way to approach laying out my controllers - basically I will have a huge form which will be broken down into manageable categories (similar to a credit card app) where the user progresses through each stage/category filling out the answers. All of these form categories are related to the main relation/object, but not to each other. Does it make more sense to have each subform/category as a method in the main controller class (which will make that one controller fairly massive), or would it be better to break each category into a subclass of the main controller? It may be just for neatness that the second approach is better, but I'm struggling to see much of a difference between either creating a new method for each category (which communicates with the model and outputs errors/success) or creating a new controller to handle the same functionality.     I'm sitting at work, waiting for traffic to die down. The thought occurred to me. I know when I want to go home, why don't I have an app that watches traffic for me? I also know that there are a lot of smart people on stackoverflow. Where can I get live traffic data for the san francisco bay area region? The data source should be timely, accurate, and as high resolution as possible. I would like to build an app on top of a service, rather than watch google maps or watch another website. I would prefer that I not have to scrape the data, but I have been know to do this in the past when no other option exists.

    How do you parse your user agent strings? I'm looking to get: Browser Browser Version OS OS Version from a user agent string. My app is written in perl and was previously using HTTP::BrowserDetect. It's a bit dated and is no longer maintained. I'm in no way tied to using perl for the actual lookup. I've come to the conclusion that automagic parsing is a lost cause. I was thinking of writing a crud type app to show me a list of unclassified UA's and manually keep them up to date. Does such an resource already exist that I can tap into? It would be awesome if I could make an HTTP call to look up the user agent info. Thanks!

    In a JSP I have the following field: <stripes:text name="email"/> This field is in my action bean(snippet): public class CreateClaim implements ActionBean { private String email; public void setEmail(String email) { this.email = email; } public String getEmail() { return email; } public Resolution alc(){ email = "poodle"; return new ForwardResolution("aForward.jsp"); } } In the alc() methos I am setting email to be null. But when the pages renders the value of the email field is exactly as it was entered originally. Is there a way of clearing this field once and event has triggered? Cheers Dave

  • Sharing internet connection over VPN in Windows XP

    How can I share my internet connection with VPN clients using the Windows XP built-in VPN server? I want to be able to use my home internet connection (on an XP machine) from my anywhere using my laptop (Windows 7 machine). The built-in VPN server in XP and the VPN client in Windows 7 seem to do a great job of giving me access to both machines securely over the internet, but I cannot find a way to use ICS in conjunction with the incoming connection to give access to my home internet connection to my laptop remotely. Is there a way to do this? or is there an alternative VPN server software that is not limited to only local access?

  • best way to switch between secure and unsecure connection without bugging the user

    The problem I am trying to tackle is simple. I have two pages - the first is a registration page, I take in a few fields from the user, once they submit it takes them to another page that processes the data, stores it to a database, and if successful, gives a confirmation message. Here is my issue - the data from the user is sensitive - as in, I'm using an https connection to ensure no eavesdropping. After that is sent to the database, I'd like on the confirmation page to do some nifty things like Google Maps navigation (this is for a time reservation application). The problem is by using the Google Maps api, I'd be linking to items through a unsecure source, which in turn prompts the user with a nasty warning message. I've browsed around, Google has an alternative to enterprise clients, but it costs $10,000 a year. What I am hoping is to find a workaround - use a secure connection to take in the data, and after it is processed, bring them to a page that isn't secure and allows me to utilize the Google Maps API. If any of you have a Netflix account you can see exactly what I would like to do when you sign-in, it is a secure page, which then takes you to your account / queue, on an unsecure page. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • REST API error return good practices

    I'm looking for guidance on good practices when it comes to return errors from a REST API. I'm working on a new API so I can take it any direction right now. My content type is XML at the moment, but I plan to support JSON in future. I am now adding some error cases, like for instance a client attempts to add a new resource but has exceeded his storage quota. I am already handling certain error cases with HTTP status codes (401 for authentication, 403 for authorization and 404 for plain bad request URIs). I looked over the blessed HTTP error codes but none of the 400-417 range seems right to report application specific errors. So at first I was tempted to return my application error with 200 OK and a specific XML payload (ie. Pay us more and you'll get the storage you need!) but I stopped to think about it and it seems to soapy (/shrug in horror). Besides it feels like I'm splitting the error responses into distinct cases, as some are http status code driven and other are content driven. So what is the SO crowd recommendation? Good practices (please explain why!) and also, from a client pov, what kind of error handling in the REST API makes life easier for the client code?

    I've been asked to quote on how long it would take to deliver a system such as can be found here: http://cgi.tnt.co.uk/ratechecker/enter_details.asp The client basically wants to give quotes for shipping based on a number of variables such as weight, distance etc, and for it to be accessible through their website. I've thought of the Drupal/Ubercart/Shipping combination but this isn't really what it's designed for. A paid for, off-the-shelf system would also be great but I can't seem to find any that do this properly.. What would be a good system to start with here, or alternatively is there a system that already does this?

I'm used to using the system.net/mailSettings approach, but as I understand it, that only allows one SMTP connection definition at a time, used by SmtpClient(). However, I need more of a connectionStrings-like approach, where I can pull a set of settings based on a key/name. Any recommendations?   • web design question (php/ajax)

    Hi guys... Hope this isn't a waste of your time. I'm working on a project, and it occured to me that there's a chunk of code out there, that should allow me to see how others have implemented this. I've got a project where I'm going to have a page, with a sel box. the user will select an item from the selList, and based on the item selected, a separate section of the page (areaB) will change in terms of the content/tbls being displayed. i then want to allow the user to go through a series of subpages in areaB, where the user goes through a submit/cancel/confirm process, where the stuff in areaB changes, with the rest of the page remaining the same... i'm trying to figure out the best approach to implement the on both client/server side. i could just have an ugly "if block" where i have abunch of logic, and i completely regen the page each time the user selects an action.. i could have an approach that might involve divs/frames, where i then just regen the targeted frame/div area.. is this even possible?? i could have some form of ajaxy process, which would only alter the targeted section(s) of the page... so.. i'm trying to talk to anyone who has ideas on how to do this, or more ideally, if you know of a good code (client/server) side example of this... that i can examine. i'd really appreciate it!! i've got a more detailed overview but didn't know if it would be cool to post it here... thanks.. tom

  • Can't access certain web sites - reset router, any ideas?

    EDIT: This problem was resolved by my ISP - had to do with damaged fiber in one of their locations. Thanks to everyone that helped. Not sure if this is the right site (I'm a StackOverflow user) so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm having trouble connecting to certain sites on any of the 3 machines that are on my LAN. The following sites are returning "Problem Loading Page - The connection has timed out" Sourceforge.net CNet.com Microsoft.com OpenDNS.com even my company's webiste I was worried about possible malware/virus, but I don't think that is the case (given the inability to access my company's site and the fact that all 3 machines are having the same issues.) I've tried with IE8, FF, and Chrome I have reset my router (WRT54G) and my machine(s) multiple times. EDIT: It is also worth noting that this page spins constantly and no avatars show up (I'm assuming it is trying to access gravatar.com with no success.) EDIT: I have the same issues directly connected to the modem. So, any router config is probably not the issue I'm a programmer, not a network guy - any ideas?
